Why nonlocal recursion operators produce local symmetries: new results and applications

It is well known that integrable hierarchies in (1+1) dimensions are local while the recursion operators that generate them usually contain nonlocal terms. We resolve this apparent discrepancy by providing simple and universal sufficient conditions for a (nonlocal) recursion operator in (1+1) dimensions to generate a hierarchy of local symmetries. These conditions are satisfied by virtually all known today recursion operators and are much easier to verify than those found in earlier work. We also give explicit formulas for the nonlocal parts of higher recursion operators, Poisson and symplectic structures of integrable systems in (1+1) dimensions. Using these two results we prove, under some natural assumptions, the Maltsev--Novikov conjecture stating that higher Hamiltonian, symplectic and recursion operators of integrable systems in (1+1) dimensions are weakly nonlocal, i.e., the coefficients of these operators are local and these operators contain at most one integration operator in each term.

On the classification of conditionally integrable evolution systems in (1+1) dimensions

We generalize earlier results of Fokas and Liu and find all locally analytic (1+1)-dimensional evolution equations of order $n$ that admit an $N$-shock type solution with $N\leq n+1$. To this end we develop a refinement of the technique from our earlier work (A. Sergyeyev, J. Phys. A: Math. Gen, 35 (2002), 7653--7660), where we completely characterized all (1+1)-dimensional evolution systems $\bi{u}_t=\bi{F}(x,t,\bi{u},\p\bi{u}/\p x,...,\p^n\bi{u}/\p x^n)$ that are conditionally invariant under a given generalized (Lie--Bäcklund) vector field $\bi{Q}(x,t,\bi{u},\p\bi{u}/\p x,...,\p^k\bi{u}/\p x^k)\p/\p\bi{u}$ under the assumption that the system of ODEs $\bi{Q}=0$ is totally nondegenerate. Every such conditionally invariant evolution system admits a reduction to a system of ODEs in $t$, thus being a nonlinear counterpart to quasi-exactly solvable models in quantum mechanics. Exact solvability of superintegrable Benenti systems

We establish quantum and classical exact solvability for two large classes of maximally superintegrable Benenti systems in $n$ dimensions with arbitrarily large $n$. Namely, we solve the Hamilton--Jacobi and Schrödinger equations for the systems in question. The results obtained are illustrated for a model with the cubic potential.

Maximal superintegrability of Benenti systems

For a class of Hamiltonian systems naturally arising in the modern theory of separation of variables, we establish their maximal superintegrability by explicitly constructing the additional integrals of motion.

A strange recursion operator demystified

We show that a new integrable two-component system of KdV type studied by Karasu (Kalkanli) et al. (arXiv: nlin.SI/0203036) is bihamiltonian, and its recursion operator, which has a highly unusual structure of nonlocal terms, can be written as a ratio of two compatible Hamiltonian operators. Using this, we prove that the system in question possesses an infinite hierarchy of local commuting generalized symmetries and conserved quantities in involution, and the evolution systems corresponding to these symmetries are bihamiltonian as well. We also show that upon introduction of suitable nonlocal variables the nonlocal terms of the recursion operator under study can be written in the usual form, with the integration operator $D^{-1}$ appearing in each term at most once.

A simple way of making a Hamiltonian system into a bi-Hamiltonian one

Given a Poisson structure (or, equivalently, a Hamiltonian operator) $P$, we show that its Lie derivative $L_τ(P)$ along a vector field $τ$ defines another Poisson structure, which is automatically compatible with $P$, if and only if $[L_τ^2(P),P]=0$, where $[\cdot,\cdot]$ is the Schouten bracket. We further prove that if $\dim\ker P\leq 1$ and $P$ is of locally constant rank, then all Poisson structures compatible with a given Poisson structure $P$ on a finite-dimensional manifold $M$ are locally of the form $L_τ(P)$, where $τ$ is a local vector field such that $L_τ^2(P)=L_{\tildeτ}(P)$ for some other local vector field $\tildeτ$. This leads to a remarkably simple construction of bi-Hamiltonian dynamical systems. We also present a generalization of these results to the infinite-dimensional case. In particular, we provide a new description for pencils of compatible local Hamiltonian operators of Dubrovin--Novikov type and associated bi-Hamiltonian systems of hydrodynamic type. Key words: compatible Poisson structures, Hamiltonian operators, bi-Hamiltonian systems (= bihamiltonian systems), integrability, Schouten bracket, master symmetry, Lichnerowicz--Poisson cohomology, hydrodynamic type systems. On a class of inhomogeneous extensions for integrable evolution systems

In the present paper we prove the integrability (in the sense of existence of formal symmetry of infinite rank) for a class of block-triangular inhomogeneous extensions of (1+1)-dimensional integrable evolution systems. An important consequence of this result is the existence of formal symmetry of infinite rank for "almost integrable" systems, recently discovered by Sanders and van der Kamp.

Recursion operator for stationary Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov equation

We present a new general construction of recursion operator from zero curvature representation. Using it, we find a recursion operator for the stationary Nizhnik--Veselov--Novikov equation and present a few low order symmetries generated with the help of this operator.

On recursion operators and nonlocal symmetries of evolution equations

We consider the recursion operators with nonlocal terms of special form for evolution systems in (1+1) dimensions, and extend them to well-defined operators on the space of nonlocal symmetries associated with the so-called universal Abelian coverings over these systems. The extended recursion operators are shown to leave this space invariant. These results apply, in particular, to the recursion operators of the majority of known today (1+1)-dimensional integrable evolution systems. We also present some related results and describe the extension of them and of the above results to (1+1)-dimensional systems of PDEs transformable into the evolutionary form. Some examples and applications are given.

Time dependence and (non)commutativity of symmetries of evolution equations

We present easily verifiable sufficient conditions of time-independence and commutativity for local and nonlocal symmetries for a large class of homogeneous (1+1)-dimensional evolution systems. In contrast with the majority of known results, the verification of our conditions does not require the existence of master symmetry or hereditary recursion operator for the system in question. We also give simple sufficient conditions for the existence of infinite sets of time-independent symmetries for homogeneous (1+1)-dimensional evolution systems within slightly modified master symmetry approach.
