[SiPAH]+ pi-Complexes in the Interstellar Medium

We investigate the presence of silicon atoms adsorbed on the surface of interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to form SiPAH pi-complexes. We use quantum chemistry calculations to obtain structural, thermodynamic and mid-IR properties of neutral and cationic SiPAH complexes. The binding energy was found to be at least 1.5 eV for [SiPAH]+ complexes whereas it is roughly 0.5 eV for their neutral counterparts. From the spectral analysis of the calculated IR spectra, we found that the coordination of silicon to PAH+ does not strongly affect the intensities of the PAH+ spectra, but systematically introduces blueshifts of the C-C in-plane and the C-H out-of-plane bands. The thermodynamic data calculated for [SiPAH]+ complexes show that these species are stable and can be easily formed by radiative association of Si+ and PAH species that are known to be abundant in photodissociation regions. Their mid-IR fingerprints show features induced by the coordination of silicon that could account for (i) the blueshifted position of the 6.2 micron AIB and (ii) the presence of satellite bands observed on the blue side of the 6.2 and 11.2 micron AIBs. From such an assignment, we can deduce that typically 1% of the cosmic silicon appears to be attached to PAHs.

Polaron Coherence as Origin of the Pseudogap Phase in High Temperature Superconducting Cuprates

Within a two component approach to high Tc copper oxides including polaronic couplings, we identify the pseudogap phase as the onset of polaron ordering. This ordering persists in the superconducting phase. A huge isotope effect on the pseudogap onset temperature is predicted and in agreement with experimental data. The anomalous temperature dependence of the mean square copper oxygen ion displacement observed above, at and below Tc stems from an s-wave superconducting component of the order parameter, whereas a pure d-wave order parameter alone can be excluded.

The 85$Rb(p,n)85Sr reaction and the modified proton optical potential

The cross sections of the astrophysically relevant 85$Rb(p,n)85Srg,m reaction have been measured between Ec.m. = 2.16 and 3.96 MeV. The cross sections have been derived by measuring the gamma radiation following the beta decay of the reaction products. A comparison with the predictions of Hauser-Feshbach calculations using the NON-SMOKER code confirms a recently derived modification of the global optical proton potential.

Coulomb suppression of the stellar enhancement factor

It is commonly assumed that reaction measurements for astrophysics should be preferably performed in the direction of positive Q value to minimize the impact of the stellar enhancement factor, i.e. the difference between the laboratory rate and the actual stellar rate. We show that the stellar effects can be minimized in the charged particle channel, even when the reaction Q value is negative. As a demonstration, the cross section of the astrophysically relevant 85Rb(p,n)85Sr reaction has been measured by activation between 2.16 < Ec.m. < 3.96 MeV and the astrophysical reaction rate for (p,n) as well as (n,p) is directly inferred from the data. The presented arguments are also relevant for other alpha and proton-induced reactions in the p and rp processes. Additionally, our results confirm a previously derived modification of a global optical proton potential.

The Ba2LnFeNb4O15 Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze: towards RT composite multiferroics

Several Niobium oxides of formula Ba2LnFeNb4O15 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd) with the Tetragonal Tungsten Bronze (TTB) structure have been synthesised by conventional solid-state methods. The Neodymium, Samarium and Europium compounds are ferroelectric with Curie temperature ranging from 320 to 440K. The Praseodymium and Gadolinium compounds behave as relaxors below 170 and 300 K respectively. The Praseodymium, Neodymium, Samarium, Europium and Gadolinium compounds exhibit magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature originating from traces of a barium ferrite secondary phase. The presence of both ferroelectric and magnetic hysteresis loops at room temperature allows considering these materials as composites multiferroic. Based on crystal-chemical analysis we propose some relationships between the introduction of Ln3+ ions in the TTB framework and the chemical, structural and physical properties of these materials.

Determination of the size, mass, and density of "exomoons" from photometric transit timing variations

Precise photometric measurements of the upcoming space missions allow the size, mass, and density of satellites of exoplanets to be determined. Here we present such an analysis using the photometric transit timing variation ($TTV_p$). We examined the light curve effects of both the transiting planet and its satellite. We define the photometric central time of the transit that is equivalent to the transit of a fixed photocenter. This point orbits the barycenter, and leads to the photometric transit timing variations. The exact value of $TTV_p$ depends on the ratio of the density, the mass, and the size of the satellite and the planet. Since two of those parameters are independent, a reliable estimation of the density ratio leads to an estimation of the size and the mass of the exomoon. Upper estimations of the parameters are possible in the case when an upper limit of $TTV_p$ is known. In case the density ratio cannot be estimated reliably, we propose an approximation with assuming equal densities. The presented photocenter $TTV_p$ analysis predicts the size of the satellite better than the mass. We simulated transits of the Earth-Moon system in front of the Sun. The estimated size and mass of the Moon are 0.020 Earth-mass and 0.274 Earth-size if equal densities are assumed. This result is comparable to the real values within a factor of 2. If we include the real density ratio (about 0.6), the results are 0.010 Earth-Mass and 0.253 Earth-size, which agree with the real values within 20%.

Strong electron-phonon coupling in the rare-earth carbide superconductor La2C3

We present the results of a crystal structure determination using neutron powder diffraction as well as the superconducting properties of the rare-earth sesquicarbide La2C3 (Tc ~ 13.4 K) by means of specific heat and upper critical field measurements. From the detailed analysis of the specific heat and a comparison with ab-initio electronic structure calculations, a quantitative estimate of the electron-phonon coupling strength and the logarithmic average phonon frequency is made. The electron-phonon coupling constant is determined to λ~ 1.35. The electron-phonon coupling to low energy phonon modes is found to be the leading mechanism for the superconductivity. Our results suggest that La2C3 is in the strong coupling regime, and the relevant phonon modes are La-related rather than C-C stretching modes. The upper critical field shows a clear enhancement with respect to the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg prediction, consistent with strong electron-phonon coupling. Possible effects on the superconducting properties due to the noncentrosymmetry of the crystal structure are discussed.

Observation of a resonance in the K$_s$p decay channel at a mass of 1765 MeV/c$^2$

We report on the observation of a K$_s$p resonance signal at a mass of 1765$\pm$5 MeV/c$^2$, with intrinsic width $Γ= 108\pm 22$ MeV/c$^2$, produced inclusively in $Σ^-$-nucleus interactions at 340 GeV/c in the hyperon beam experiment WA89 at CERN. The signal was observed in the kinematic region $x_F>0.7$, in this region its production cross section rises approximately linearly with $(1-x_F)$, reaching $BR(X\to K_S p)\cdot dσ/dx_F = (5.2\pm 2.3) μb $ per nucleon at $x_F=0.8$. The hard \xf spectrum suggests the presence of a strong leading particle effect in the production and hence the identification as a $Σ^{*+}$ state. No corresponding peaks were observed in the $K^- p$ and $Λπ^{\pm}$ mass spectra.

Real and marginal isotope effects in cuprate superconductors

We critically review recent and earlier results on isotope effects in cuprate superconductors and emphasize that the sample preparation and the isotope exchange and back exchange are crucial in understanding and interpreting the data. Only extremely careful preparation techniques yield reliable results and permit differentiation between real isotope effects and marginal ones. The former are substantial and highlight the lattice vibrational importance in cuprate superconductors.

EXAFS study of lead-free relaxor ferroelectric BaTi(1-x)Zr(x)O3 at the Zr K-edge

Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) experiments at the Zr K-edge were carried out on perovskite relaxor ferroelectrics BaTi(1-x)Zr(x)O3 (BTZ) (x = 0.25, 0.30, 0.35), and on BaZrO3 for comparison. Structural information up to 4.5 A around the Zr atoms is obtained, revealing that the local structure differs notably from the average Pm-3m cubic structure deduced from X-ray diffraction. In particular, our results show that the distance between Zr atoms and their first oxygen neighbors is independent of the Zr substitution rate x and equal to that measured in BaZrO3, while the X-ray cubic cell parameter increases linearly with x. Furthermore, we show that the Zr atoms tend to segregate in Zr-rich regions. We propose that the relaxor behavior in BTZ is linked to random elastic fields generated by this particular chemical arrangement, rather than to random electric fields as is the case in most relaxors.

Possibility of a photometric detection of "exomoons"

We examined which exo-systems contain moons that may be detected in transit. We numerically modeled transit light curves of Earth-like and giant planets that cointain moons with 0.005--0.4 Earth-mass. The orbital parameters were randomly selected, but the entire system fulfilled Hill-stability. We conclude that the timing effect is caused by two scenarios: the motion of the planet and the moon around the barycenter. Which one dominates depends on the parameters of the system. Already planned missions (Kepler, COROT) may be able to detect the moon in transiting extrasolar Earth-Moon-like systems with a 20% probability. From our sample of 500 free-designed systems, 8 could be detected with the photometric accuracy of 0.1 mmag and a 1 minute sampling, and one contains a stony planet. With ten times better accuracy, 51 detections are expected. All such systems orbit far from the central star, with the orbital periods at least 200 and 10 days for the planet and the moon, while they contain K- and M-dwarf stars. Finally we estimate that a few number of real detections can be expected by the end of the COROT and the Kepler missions.

Structural properties of the sesquicarbide superconductor La2C3 at high pressure

The effect of pressure on the structural properties of lanthanum sesquicarbide La2C3 (T_c = 13 K) has been investigated at room temperature by angle-dispersive powder x-ray diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The compound remains in the cubic Pu2C3-type structure at pressures up to at least 30 GPa. The corresponding equation of state parameters are reported and discussed in terms of phase stability of La2C3. Pressure-volume data of the impurity phase LaC2 are reported also for pressures up to 13 GPa.

Quantum interference of electrons in Nb_{5-δ}Te_4 single crystals

The compound $Nb_{5-δ}Te_4$ ($δ=0.23$) with quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure undergoes a transition to superconductivity at $T_c$=0.6--0.9 K. Its electronic transport properties in the normal state are studied in the temperature range 1.3--270 K and in magnetic fields up to 11 T. The temperature variation of the resistivity is weak ($<2%$) in the investigated temperature range. Nonmonotonic behavior of the resistivity is observed which is characterized by two local maxima at $T\sim$2 K and $\sim$30 K. The temperature dependence of the resistivity is interpreted as an interplay of weak localization, weak antilocalization, and electron-electron interaction effects in the diffusion and the Cooper channel. The temperature dependence of the dephasing time $τ_ϕ$ extracted from the magnetoresistance data is determined by the electron-phonon interaction. The saturation of $τ_ϕ$ in the low-temperature limit correlates with $T_c$ of the individual crystal and is ascribed to the scattering on magnetic impurities.

Spin fluctuations in the quasi-two dimensional Heisenberg ferromagnet GdI_2 studied by Electron Spin Resonance

The spin dynamics of GdI_2 have been investigated by ESR spectroscopy. The temperature dependences of the resonance field and ESR intensity are well described by the model for the spin susceptibility proposed by Eremin et al. [Phys. Rev. B 64, 064425 (2001)]. The temperature dependence of the resonance linewidth shows a maximum similar to the electrical resistance and is discussed in terms of scattering processes between conduction electrons and localized spins.

The Longitudinal Polarimeter at HERA

The design, construction and operation of a Compton back-scattering laser polarimeter at the HERA storage ring at DESY are described. The device measures the longitudinal polarization of the electron beam between the spin rotators at the HERMES experiment with a fractional systematic uncertainty of 1.6%. A measurement of the beam polarization to an absolute statistical precision of 0.01 requires typically one minute when the device is operated in the multi-photon mode. The polarimeter also measures the polarization of each individual electron bunch to an absolute statistical precision of 0.06 in approximately five minutes. It was found that colliding and non-colliding bunches can have substantially different polarizations. This information is important to the collider experiments H1 and ZEUS for their future longitudinally polarized electron program because those experiments use the colliding bunches only.

The Structure Function Ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) at small x

We present the structure function ratios F2(Li)/F2(D) and F2(C)/F2(D) measured in deep inelastic muon-nucleus scattering at a nominal incident muon energy of 200 GeV. The kinematic range 0.0001 < x < 0.7 and 0.01< Q^2 < 70 GeV^2 is covered. For values of $x$ less than $0.002$ both ratios indicate saturation of shadowing at values compatible with photoabsorption results.
