Staying adiabatic with unknown energy gap

We introduce an algorithm to perform an optimal adiabatic evolution that operates without an apriori knowledge of the system spectrum. By probing the system gap locally, the algorithm maximizes the evolution speed, thus minimizing the total evolution time. We test the algorithm on the Landau-Zener transition and then apply it on the quantum adiabatic computation of 3-SAT: The result is compatible with an exponential speed-up for up to twenty qubits with respect to classical algorithms. We finally study a possible algorithm improvement by combining it with the quantum Zeno effect.

Instability and Vortex Rings Dynamics in a Three-Dimensional Superfluid Flow Through a Constriction

We study the instability of a superfluid flow through a constriction in three spatial dimensions. We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature in two different geometries: a straight waveguide and a torus. The constriction consists of a broad, repulsive penetrable barrier. In the hydrodynamic regime, we find that the flow becomes unstable as soon as the velocity at the classical (Thomas-Fermi) surface equals the sound speed inside the constriction. At this critical point, vortex rings enter inside the bulk region of the cloud. The nucleation and dynamics scenario is strongly affected by the presence of asymmetries in the velocity and density of the background condensate flow.

Dynamics of a tunable superfluid junction

We study the population dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential throughout the crossover from Josephson dynamics to hydrodynamics. At barriers higher than the chemical potential, we observe slow oscillations well described by a Josephson model. In the limit of low barriers, the fundamental frequency agrees with a simple hydrodynamic model, but we also observe a second, higher frequency. A full numerical simulation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation giving the frequencies and amplitudes of the observed modes between these two limits is compared to the data and is used to understand the origin of the higher mode. Implications for trapped matter-wave interferometers are discussed.

Entanglement and sensitivity in precision measurements with states of a fluctuating number of particles

The concepts of separability, entanglement, spin-squeezing and Heisenberg limit are central in the theory of quantum enhanced metrology. In the current literature, these are well established only in the case of linear interferometers operating with input quantum states of a known fixed number of particles. This manuscript generalizes these concepts and extends the quantum phase estimation theory by taking into account classical and quantum fluctuations of the particle number. Our analysis concerns most of the current experiments on precision measurements where the number of particles is known only in average.

Ultrasensitive Atomic clock with single-mode number-squeezing

We show that the sensitivity of an atomic clock can be enhanced below the shot-noise level by initially squeezing, and then measuring in output, the population of a single atomic level. This can simplify current experimental protocols which requires squeezing of the relative number of particles of the two populated states. We finally study, as a specific application, the clock sensitivity obtained with a single mode quantum non-demolition measurement.

Current-Phase Relation of a Bose-Einstein Condensate Flowing Through a Weak Link

We study the current-phase relation of a Bose-Einstein condensate flowing through a repulsive square barrier by solving analytically the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The barrier height and width fix the current-phase relation $j(δϕ)$, which tends to $j\sim\cos(δϕ/2)$ for weak barriers and to the Josephson sinusoidal relation $j\sim\sin(δϕ)$ for strong barriers. Between these two limits, the current-phase relation depends on the barrier width. In particular, for wide enough barriers, we observe two families of multivalued current-phase relations. Diagrams belonging to the first family, already known in the literature, can have two different positive values of the current at the same phase difference. The second family, new to our knowledge, can instead allow for three different positive currents still corresponding to the same phase difference. Finally, we show that the multivalued behavior arises from the competition between hydrodynamic and nonlinear-dispersive components of the flow, the latter due to the presence of a soliton inside the barrier region.

Vortex-Induced Phase Slip Dissipation in a Toroidal Bose-Einstein Condensate Flowing Through a Barrier

We study superfluid dissipation due to phase slips for a BEC flowing through a repulsive barrier inside a torus. The barrier is adiabatically raised across the annulus while the condensate flows with a finite quantized angular momentum. At a critical height, a vortex moves from the inner region and reaches the barrier to eventually circulate around the annulus. At a higher critical height, an anti-vortex also enters into the torus from the outer region. Both vortex and anti-vortex decrease the total angular momentum by leaving behind a $2π$ phase slip. When they collide and annihilate or orbit along the same loop, the condensate suffers a global $2π$ phase slip, and the total angular momentum decreases by one quantum. In hydrodynamic regime, the instability sets in when the local superfluid velocity equals the sound speed inside the barrier region.

Entanglement, Non-linear Dynamics, and the Heisenberg Limit

We show that the quantum Fisher information provides a sufficient condition to recognize multi-particle entanglement in a $N$ qubit state. The same criterion gives a necessary and sufficient condition for sub shot-noise phase sensitivity in the estimation of a collective rotation angle $θ$. The analysis therefore singles out the class of entangled states which are {\it useful} to overcome classical phase sensitivity in metrology and sensors. We finally study the creation of useful entangled states by the non-linear dynamical evolution of two decoupled Bose-Einstein condensates or trapped ions.

Macroscopic Superpositions of Phase States with Bose-Einstein Condensates

Quantum superpositions of macroscopically distinguishable states having distinct phases can be created with a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a periodic potential. The experimental signature is contained in the phase distribution of the interference patterns obtained after releasing the traps. Moreover, in the double well case, this distribution exhibits a dramatic dependence on the parity of the total number of atoms. We finally show that, for single well occupations up to a few hundred atoms, the macroscopic quantum superposition can be robust enough against decoherence to be experimentally revealable within current technology.

Optical Lattices: Theory

This chapter presents an overview of the properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a periodic potential. This system has attracted a wide interest in the last years, and a few excellent reviews of the field have already appeared in the literature (see, for instance, [1-3] and references therein). For this reason, and because of the huge amount of published results, we do not pretend here to be comprehensive, but we will be content to provide a flavor of the richness of this subject, together with some useful references. On the other hand, there are good reasons for our effort. Probably, the most significant is that BEC in periodic potentials is a truly interdisciplinary problem, with obvious connections with electrons in crystal lattices, polarons and photons in optical fibers. Moreover, the BEC experimentalists have reached such a high level of accuracy to create in the lab, so to speak, paradigmatic Hamiltonians, which were first introduced as idealized theoretical models to study, among others, dynamical instabilities or quantum phase transitions.

Mach-Zehnder Interferometry at the Heisenberg Limit with coherent and squeezed-vacuum light

We show that the phase sensitivity $Δθ$ of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer fed by a coherent state in one input port and squeezed-vacuum in the other one is i) independent from the true value of the phase shift and ii) can reach the Heisenberg limit $Δθ\sim 1/N_T$, where $N_T$ is the average number of particles of the input states. We also show that the Cramer-Rao lower bound, $Δθ\propto 1/ \sqrt{|α|^2 e^{2r} + \sinh^2r}$, can be saturated for arbitrary values of the squeezing parameter $r$ and the amplitude of the coherent mode $|α|$ by a Bayesian phase inference protocol.

Phase detection at the quantum limit with multi-photon Mach-Zehnder interferometry

We study a Mach-Zehnder interferometer fed by a coherent state in one input port and vacuum in the other. We explore a Bayesian phase estimation strategy to demonstrate that it is possible to achieve the standard quantum limit independently from the true value of the phase shift and specific assumptions on the noise of the interferometer. We have been able to implement the protocol using parallel operation of two photon-number-resolving detectors and multiphoton coincidence logic electronics at the output ports of a weakly-illuminated Mach-Zehnder interferometer. This protocol is unbiased and saturates the Cramer-Rao phase uncertainty bound and, therefore, is an optimal phase estimation strategy.

Bogoliubov-Cerenkov radiation in a Bose-Einstein condensate flowing against an obstacle

We study the density modulation that appears in a Bose-Einstein condensate flowing with supersonic velocity against an obstacle. The experimental density profiles observed at JILA are reproduced by a numerical integration of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and then interpreted in terms of Cerenkov emission of Bogoliubov excitations by the defect. The phonon and the single-particle regions of the Bogoliubov spectrum are respectively responsible for a conical wavefront and a fan-shaped series of precursors.

Non-Linear Beam Splitter in Bose-Einstein Condensate Interferometers

A beam splitter is an important component of an atomic/optical Mach-Zehnder interferometer. Here we study a Bose Einstein Condensate beam splitter, realized with a double well potential of tunable height. We analyze how the sensitivity of a Mach Zehnder interferometer is degraded by the non-linear particle-particle interaction during the splitting dynamics. We distinguish three regimes, Rabi, Josephson and Fock, and associate to them a different scaling of the phase sensitivity with the total number of particles.

Healing Length and Bubble Formation in DNA

We have recently suggested that the probability for the formation of thermally activated DNA bubbles is, to a very good approximation, proportional to the number of soft AT pairs over a length L(n) that depend on the size $n$ of the bubble and on the temperature of the DNA. Here we clarify the physical interpretation of this length by relating it to the (healing) length that is required for the effect of a base-pair defect to become neligible. This provides a simple criteria to calculate L(n) for bubbles of arbitrary size and for any temperature of the DNA. We verify our findings by exact calculations of the equilibrium statistical properties of the Peyrard-Bishop-Dauxois model. Our method permits calculations of equilibrium thermal openings with several order of magnitude less numerical expense as compared with direct evaluations.

Finite-Temperature Renormalization Group Analysis of Interaction Effects in 2D Lattices of Bose-Einstein Condensates

By using a renormalization group analysis, we study the effect of interparticle interactions on the critical temperature at which the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition occurs for Bose-Einstein condensates loaded at finite temperature in a 2D optical lattice. We find that the critical temperature decreases as the interaction energy decreases; when U/J=36/πone has a vanishing critical temperature, signaling the possibility of a quantum phase transition of BKT type.

Lengthscales and Cooperativity in DNA Bubble Formation

It appears that thermally activated DNA bubbles of different sizes play central roles in important genetic processes. Here we show that the probability for the formation of such bubbles is regulated by the number of soft AT pairs in specific regions with lengths which at physiological temperatures are of the order of (but not equal to) the size of the bubble. The analysis is based on the Peyrard- Bishop-Dauxois model, whose equilibrium statistical properties have been accurately calculated here with a transfer integral approach.
