On Defect-Mediated Transitions in Bosonic Planar Lattices

We discuss the finite-temperature properties of Bose-Einstein condensates loaded on a 2D optical lattice. In an experimentally attainable range of parameters the system is described by the XY model, which undergoes a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition driven by the vortex pair unbinding. The interference pattern of the expanding condensates provides the experimental signature of the BKT transition: near the critical temperature, the k=0 component of the momentum distribution sharply decreases.

Dephasing and breakdown of adiabaticity in the splitting of Bose Einstein Condensates

We study the quantum dynamics of a BEC condensate trapped in a double-well potential with a rising interwell barrier. We analytically find the characteristic time scales of the splitting process and compare our results with numerical analyses available in the literature. In first stage of the dynamics, the condensate follows adiabatically the rising of the interwell barrier. At a critical time $t_{ad}$, small amplitude fluctuations around the average trajectory increase exponentially fast, signaling the break-down of adiabaticity. We have found a highly non-trivial dependence of the dephasing time $t_D$, defined by $σ_ϕ(t_D)=1$, where $σ_ϕ(t)$ is the dynamical quantum phase spreading, on $t_{ad}$ and on the ramping time of the interwell barrier.

Observable Signature of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in a Planar Lattice of Bose-Einstein Condensates

We investigate the possibility that Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), loaded on a 2D optical lattice, undergo - at finite temperature - a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition. We show that - in an experimentally attainable range of parameters - a planar lattice of BECs is described by the XY model at finite temperature. We demonstrate that the interference pattern of the expanding condensates provides the experimental signature of the BKT transition by showing that, near the critical temperature, the k=0 component of the momentum distribution and the central peak of the atomic density profile sharply decrease. The finite-temperature transition for a 3D optical lattice is also discussed, and the analogies with superconducting Josephson junction networks are stressed through the text.

Modulational and Parametric Instabilities of the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We examine the modulational and parametric instabilities arising in a non-autonomous, discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation setting. The principal motivation for our study stems from the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a deep optical lattice. We find that under periodic variations of the heights of the interwell barriers (or equivalently of the scattering length), additionally to the modulational instability, a window of parametric instability becomes available to the system. We explore this instability through multiple-scale analysis and identify it numerically. Its principal dynamical characteristic is that, typically, it develops over much larger times than the modulational instability, a feature that is qualitatively justified by comparison of the corresponding instability growth rates.

Variational Approach to the Modulational Instability

We study the modulational stability of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) using a time-dependent variational approach. Within this framework, we derive ordinary differential equations (ODEs) for the time evolution of the amplitude and phase of modulational perturbations. Analyzing the ensuing ODEs, we re-derive the classical modulational instability criterion. The case (relevant to applications in optics and Bose-Einstein condensation) where the coefficients of the equation are time-dependent, is also examined.

Propagation of sound in a Bose Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the propagation of sound waves in a Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional optical lattice. We find that the velocity of propagation of sound wavepackets decreases with increasing optical lattice depth, as predicted by the Bogoliubov theory. The strong interplay between nonlinearities and the periodicity of the external potential raise new phenomena which are not present in the uniform case. Shock waves, for instance, can propagate slower than sound waves, due to the negative curvature of the dispersion relation. Moreover, nonlinear corrections to the Bogoliubov theory appear to be important even with very small density perturbations, inducing a saturation on the amplitude of the sound signal.

Double-Slit Interferometry with a Bose-Einstein Condensate

A Bose-Einstein "double-slit" interferometer has been recently realized experimentally by (Y. Shin et. al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92 50405 (2004)). We analyze the interferometric steps by solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevski equation in three-dimensional space. We focus on the adiabaticity time scales of the problem and on the creation of spurious collective excitations as a possible source of the strong dephasing observed experimentally. The role of quantum fluctuations is discussed.

Non-equilibrium Mott transition in a lattice of Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the non-equilibrium dynamics of the zero temperature Mott insulator- superfluid quantum phase transition in a lattice of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. We show that crossing the critical point from the insulating to the superfluid phase at a finite rate results in a finite dispersion of current. Viceversa, crossing the critical point from the superfluid phase to the insulating one, results in a finite dispersion of the number of atoms per lattice site. We develop a microscopic dynamical model of the transition, and make quantitative predictions for realistic experiments.

Insulating Behavior of a Trapped Ideal Fermi Gas

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the center-of-mass motion of an ideal Fermi gas in a combined periodic and harmonic potential. We find a crossover from a conducting to an insulating regime as the Fermi energy moves from the first Bloch band into the bandgap of the lattice. The conducting regime is characterized by an oscillation of the cloud about the potential minimum, while in the insulating case the center of mass remains on one side of the potential.

Irregular Dynamics in a One-Dimensional Bose System

We study many-body quantum dynamics of $δ$-interacting bosons confined in a one-dimensional ring. Main attention is payed to the transition from the mean-field to Tonks-Girardeau regime using an approach developed in the theory of interacting particles. We analyze, both analytically and numerically, how the Shannon entropy of the wavefunction and the momentum distribution depend on time for a weak and strong interactions. We show that the transition from regular (quasi-periodic) to irregular ("chaotic") dynamics coincides with the onset of the Tonks-Girardeau regime. In the latter regime the momentum distribution of the system reveals a statistical relaxation to a steady state distribution. The transition can be observed experimentally by studying the interference fringes obtained after releasing the trap and letting the boson system expand ballistically.

Superfluid Dynamics of a Bose-Einstein Condensate in a Periodic Potential

We investigate the superfluid properties of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a one dimensional periodic potential. We study, both analytically (in the tight binding limit) and numerically, the Bloch chemical potential, the Bloch energy and the Bogoliubov dispersion relation, and we introduce {\it two} different, density dependent, effective masses and group velocities. The Bogoliubov spectrum predicts the existence of sound waves, and the arising of energetic and dynamical instabilities at critical values of the BEC quasi-momentum which dramatically affect its coherence properties. We investigate the dependence of the dipole and Bloch oscillation frequencies in terms of an effective mass averaged over the density of the condensate. We illustrate our results with several animations obtained solving numerically the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation.

Dynamical Superfluid-Insulator Transition in a Chain of Weakly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates

We predict a dynammical classical superfluid-insulator transition (CSIT) in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in an optical and a magnetic potential. In the tight-binding limit, this system realizes an array of weakly-coupled condensates driven by an external harmonic field. For small displacements of the parabolic trap about the equilibrium position, the BEC center of mass oscillates with the relative phases of neighbouring condensates locked at the same (oscillating) value. For large displacements, the BEC remains localized on the side of the harmonic trap. This is caused by a randomization of the relative phases, while the coherence of each individual condensate in the array is preserved. The CSIT is attributed to a discrete modulational instability, occurring when the BEC center of mass velocity is larger than a critical value, proportional to the tunneling rate between adjacent sites.

Superfluidity versus Disorder in the Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

We study the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equation (DNLS) in an annular geometry with on-site defects. The dynamics of a traveling plane-wave maps onto an effective ''non-rigid pendulum'' Hamiltonian. The different regimes include the complete reflection and refocusing of the initial wave, solitonic structures, and a superfluid state. In the superfluid regime, which occurs above a critical value of nonlinearity, a plane-wave travels coherently through the randomly distributed defects. This superfluidity criterion for the DNLS is analogous to (yet very different from) the Landau superfluidity criteria in translationally invariant systems. Experimental implications for the physics of Bose-Einstein condensate gases trapped in optical potentials and of arrays of optical fibers are discussed.

Dynamics of Quantum Phase Transition in an Array of Josephson Junctions

We study the dynamics of the Mott insulator-superfluid quantum phase transition in a periodic 1D array of Josephson junctions. We show that crossing the critical point diabatically i.e. at a finite rate with a quench time $τ_Q$ induces finite quantum fluctuations of the current around the loop proportional to $τ_Q^{-1/6}$. This scaling could be experimentally verified with in array of weakly coupled Bose-Einstein condensates or superconducting grains.

Josephson Junction Arrays with Bose-Einstein Condensates

We report on the direct observation of an oscillating atomic current in a one-dimensional array of Josephson junctions realized with an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The array is created by a laser standing-wave, with the condensates trapped in the valleys of the periodic potential and weakly coupled by the inter-well barriers. The coherence of multiple tunneling between adjacent wells is continuously probed by atomic interference. The square of the small-amplitude oscillation frequency is proportional to the microscopic tunneling rate of each condensate through the barriers, and provides a direct measurement of the Josephson critical current as a function of the intermediate barrier heights. Our superfluid array may allow investigation of phenomena so far inaccessible to superconducting Josephson junctions and lays a bridge between the condensate dynamics and the physics of discrete nonlinear media.

Discrete Solitons and Breathers with Dilute Bose-Einstein Condensates

We study the dynamical phase diagram of a dilute Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a periodic potential. The dynamics is governed by a discrete non-linear Schrödinger equation: intrinsically localized excitations, including discrete solitons and breathers, can be created even if the BEC's interatomic potential is repulsive. Furthermore, we analyze the Anderson-Kasevich experiment [Science 282, 1686 (1998)], pointing out that mean field effects lead to a coherent destruction of the interwell Bloch oscillations.

The Quantum Josephson Hamiltonian In The Phase Representation

The quantum Josephson Hamiltonian of two weakly linked Bose-Einstein condensates is written in an overcomplete phase representation, thus avoiding the problem of defining a Hermitian phase operator. We discuss the limit of validity of the standard, non-rigorous Mathieu equation, due to the onset of a higher order $\cos 2 ϕ$ term in the Josephson potential, and also to the overcompleteness of the representation (the phase $ϕ$ being the relative phase between the two condensates). We thereby unify the Boson Hubbard and Quantum Phase models.
