New constraints on the binary system HD 327083 and its gaseous and dusty environments

Binary systems with circumbinary molecular and dust rings are of great interest because they provide insights into the dynamics and evolution of stellar systems and the chemistry of the surrounding material. We aim to elucidate the nature of the B[e] binary system HD 327083 and the physical properties of its circumstellar and circumbinary envelopes. We combined multi-epoch high-spectral resolution optical and near-IR observations with VLTI/MIDI observations and ASAS-3 photometry. The data were analysed to obtain the orbital parameters, study individual members of the system, and derive the properties of the atomic and molecular gas and the dusty components of the complex environment of HD 327083. We improved the orbital solution of HD 327083 and derived a period of P = 107.699 d. Most optical lines display variations in shape and intensity when folded with the orbital motion. We assigned F6 II-III and B1 spectral types respectively to the cool and hot components. A ring of molecular gas revolves around the system and varies with the orbital phase. The MIDI data show a silicate band in absorption at 9.7 micron and indicate that the dust distribution has an elliptical shape, with its inner edge varying with orbital phase between 12.5 and 44 AU. We conclude that the B[e] binary system HD 327083 comprises a B-type massive accreting star, and an F-type companion filling over 60% of its Roche lobe and evolving towards the red supergiant stage. The deformed shape of the F-type star causes a broad minimum in the light curve. The hot companion (26 000 K, log g = 3.0) is hidden by a compact disc and shows a bi-polar outflow. The entire binary system presents an O-rich environment. It is surrounded by warm CO and SiO molecular rings, which are enclosed by an elliptical dust structure. All these components were formed by the evolved donor star during its evolution towards the red supergiant phase.

Vibrational sensing at mK temperatures in dry dilution refrigerators using commercial accelerometers for diverse fundamental physics applications

This article presents an evaluation of off-the-shelf commercial accelerometers at the mixing chamber stage of a cryogen-free dilution refrigerator at temperatures down to 8 mK. In addition, we present results of radioassay of accelerometers using a high purity germanium detector counting setup. Cryogen-free dilution refrigerators using pulse-tube cryocoolers (PTs) -- due to recent advances in their cooling capacity, long-term stability, and operational costs -- have become ubiquitous tools in a wide range of fields ranging from experimental particle physics to quantum information sciences. However, vibrations induced by PTs can negatively impact the experimental payload in these applications. This work demonstrates that commercially available accelerometers can not only measure vibrations at millikelvin cryogenic temperatures but also pave the way for continuous, in situ, real-time vibration monitoring of dry dilution refrigerators. This monitoring capability facilitates applications such as real-time denoising for vibration-sensitive experiments, thereby enabling ongoing noise assessment and mitigation.

A Sound Horizon-Free Measurement of $H_0$ in DESI 2024

The physical size of the sound horizon at recombination is a powerful source of information for early-time measurements of the Hubble constant $H_0$, and many proposed solutions to the Hubble tension therefore involve modifications to this scale. In light of this, there has been growing interest in measuring $H_0$ independently of the sound horizon. We present the first such measurement to use data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), jointly analyzing the full-shape galaxy power spectra of DESI luminous red galaxies, emission line galaxies, quasars, and the bright galaxy sample, in a total of six redshift bins. Information from the sound horizon scale is removed from our constraints via a rescaling procedure at the power spectrum level, with our sound horizon-marginalized measurement being driven instead primarily by the matter-radiation equality scale. This measurement is then combined with additional sound horizon-free information from Planck+ACT CMB lensing, uncalibrated type Ia supernovae, and the DESI Lyman-$\alpha$ forest. We agnostically combine with the DESY5, Pantheon+, and Union3 supernova datasets, with our tightest respective constraints being $H_0=66.7^{+1.7}_{-1.9},~67.9^{+1.9}_{-2.1},$ and $67.8^{+2.0}_{-2.2}$ km s-1 Mpc-1. This corresponds to a sub-3% sound horizon-free constraint of the Hubble constant, and is the most precise measurement of its kind to date. Even without including information from the sound horizon, our measurement is still in 2.2-3.0$\sigma$ tension with SH0ES. Additionally, the consistency between our result and other measurements that do rely on the sound horizon scale provides no evidence for new early-Universe physics (e.g. early dark energy). Future DESI data releases will allow unprecedented measurements of $H_0$ and place strong constraints on models that use beyond-$\Lambda$CDM physics to ameliorate the Hubble tension.

BCD spectrophotometry for massive stars in transition phases

Context. Stars in transition phases, like those showing the B[e] phenomenon and luminous blue variables (LBVs), undergo strong, often irregular mass ejection events. The prediction of these phases in stellar evolution models is therefore extremely difficult if not impossible. As a result, their effective temperatures, their luminosities and even their true nature are not fully known. Aims. A suitable procedure to derive the stellar parameters of these types of objects is to use the BCD spectrophotometric classification system, based on the analysis of the Balmer discontinuity. The BCD parameters ({\lambda}_1, D) are independent of interstellar extinction and circumstellar contributions. Methods. We obtained low-resolution spectra for 14 stars with the B[e] phenomenon and LBVs. Using the BCD method, we derived the stellar and physical parameters. The study was complemented with the information provided by the JHK colour-colour diagram. Results. For each star, the BCD system gives a complete set of fundamental parameters and related quantities such as luminosity and distance. We confirmed HK Ori, HD 323771 and HD 52721 as pre-main sequence HAe/B[e], AS 202 and HD 85567 as FS CMa-type, and HD 62623 as sgB[e] stars. We classified Hen 3-847, CD-24 5721, and HD 53367 as young B[e] stars or FS CMa-type candidates, and HD 58647 as a slightly evolved B[e] star. In addition, Hen 3-1398 is an sgB[e] and MWC 877, CPD-59 2854 and LHA 120-S 65 are LBV candidates. The stellar parameters of the latter two LBVs are determined for the first time. Conclusions. Our results emphasise that the BCD system is a highly valuable tool to derive stellar parameters and physical properties of B-type stars in transition phases. This method can be combined with near-IR colour-colour diagrams to determine or confirm the evolutionary stage of emission-line stars with dust disks.

Point pattern analysis and classification on compact two-point homogeneous spaces evolving time

This paper introduces a new modeling framework for the statistical analysis of point patterns on a manifold M_{d}, defined by a connected and compact two-point homogeneous space, including the special case of the sphere. The presented approach is based on temporal Cox processes driven by a L^{2}(\mathbb{M}_{d})-valued log-intensity. Different aggregation schemes on the manifold of the spatiotemporal point-referenced data are implemented in terms of the time-varying discrete Jacobi polynomial transform of the log-risk process. The n-dimensional microscale point pattern evolution in time at different manifold spatial scales is then characterized from such a transform. The simulation study undertaken illustrates the construction of spherical point process models displaying aggregation at low Legendre polynomial transform frequencies (large scale), while regularity is observed at high frequencies (small scale). K-function analysis supports these results under temporal short-, intermediate- and long-range dependence of the log-risk process.

A Bayesian network model for predicting cardiovascular risk

We propose a Bayesian network model to make inferences and predictions about cardiovascular risk. Both the structure and the probability tables in the underlying model are built using a large dataset collected in Spain from annual work health assessments, with uncertainty characterized through posterior distributions. We illustrate its use for public health practice, policy and research purposes. A freely available version of the software is included in an Appendix.

Radiation hardness of GaAs: Cr and Si sensors irradiated by electron beam

The interest in using the radiation detectors based on high resistive chromium-compensated GaAs (GaAs:Cr) in high energy physics and others applied fields has been growing steadily due to its numerous advantages over others classical materials. High radiation hardness at room temperature stands out and needs to be systematically investigated. In this paper an experimental study of the effect of 20.9 MeV electrons generated by the LINAC-200 accelerator on some properties of GaAs:Cr based sensors is presented. In parallel, Si sensors were irradiated at the same conditions, measured and analyzed in order to perform a comparative study. The target sensors were irradiated with the dose up to 1.5 MGy. The current-voltage characteristics, resistivity, charge collection efficiency and their dependences on the bias voltage and temperature were measured at different absorbed doses. An analysis of the possible microscopic mechanisms leading to the observed effects in GaAs:Cr sensors is presented in the article.

Big Bang Bifurcations in the Tantalus Oscillator under Biphasics Perturbations

The Tantalus Oscillator is a non linear hydrodynamic oscillator with an attractive limit cycle. In this study we pursue the construction of a biparametric bifurcation diagram for the Tantalus Oscillator under biphasics perturbations. That is the first time that this kind of diagram is built for this kind of oscillator under biphasics perturbations. Results show that biphasic perturbations have no effect when the coupling time is chosen over a wide range of values. This modifies the bifurcation diagram obtain under monophasics perturbations. Now we have the appearance of periodic increment Big Bang Bifurcations. The theoretical results are in excellent agreement with experimental observations.

GaAs/GaP quantum dots: Ensemble of direct and indirect heterostructures with room temperature optical emission

We describe the optical emission and the carrier dynamics of an ensemble of self-assembled GaAs quantum dots embedded in GaP(001). The QD formation is driven by the 3.6 % lattice mismatch between GaAs and GaP in Stranski-Krastanow mode after deposition of more than 1.2 monolayers of GaAs. The quantum dots have an areal density between 6 and 7.6x1010 per cm-2 and multimodal size distribution. The luminescence spectra show two peaks in the range of 1.7 and 2.1 eV. The samples with larger quantum dots have red emission and show less thermal quenching compared to the samples with smaller QDs. The large QDs luminescence up to room temperature. We attribute the high energy emission to indirect carrier recombination in the thin quantum wells or small strained quantum dots, whereas the low energy red emission is due to the direct electron-hole recombination in the relaxed quantum dots.

Rotation in the ZAMS: Be and Bn stars

We show that Be stars belong to a high velocity tail of a single B-type star rotational velocity distribution in the MS. This implies that: 1) the number fraction N(Be)/N(Be+B) is independent of the mass; 2) Bn stars having ZAMS rotational velocities higher than a given limit might become Be stars.

Observing campaign of Eta Carinae from La Plata. Period 2003-2004

After the Observing Campaign of Eta Carinae carried out during 2003, we have continued the CCD observations using the 0.8 m Reflector telescope at La Plata Observatory, in the BVRI bands. Here, we present the results obtained since November 2003 until August 2004. In addition, we present differential photometry of other objects included in the Eta Car's frames, belonging to the open cluster Trumpler 16.
