Nuclear recoil effect on the g factor of highly charged Li-like ions

The nuclear recoil effect on the g factor of highly charged Li-like ions is evaluated in the range Z=10-92. The calculations are performed using the 1/Z perturbation theory. The one-electron recoil contribution is evaluated within the fully relativistic approach with the wave functions which account for the screening effects approximately. The two-electron recoil contributions of the first and higher orders in 1/Z are calculated within the Breit approximation using a four-component approach.

Charge migration mechanisms in the DNA at finite temperature revisited; from quasi-ballistic to subdiffusive transport

Various charge migration mechanisms in the DNA are studied within the framework of the Peyrard-Bishop-Holstein model which has been widely used to address charge dynamics in this macromolecule. To analyze these mechanisms we consider characteristic size and time scales of the fluctuations of the electronic and vibrational subsystems. It is shown, in particular, that due to substantial differences in these timescales polaron formation is unlikely within a broad range of temperatures. We demonstrate that at low temperatures electronic transport can be quasi-ballistic. For high temperatures, we propose an alternative to polaronic charge migration mechanism: the fluctuation-assisted one, in which the electron dynamics is governed by relatively slow fluctuations of the vibrational subsystem. We argue also that the discussed methods and mechanisms can be relevant for other organic macromolecular systems, such as conjugated polymers and molecular aggregates.

Statistical symmetry restoration in fully developed turbulence: Renormalization group analysis of two models

In this paper we consider the model of incompressible fluid described by the stochastic Navier-Stokes equation with finite correlation time of a random force. Inertial-range asymptotic behavior of fully developed turbulence is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group within the one-loop approximation. It is corroborated that regardless of the values of model parameters and initial data, the inertial-range behavior of the model is described by limiting case of vanishing correlation time. It indicates that the Galilean symmetry of the model violated by the "colored" random force is restored in the inertial range. This regime corresponds to the only nontrivial fixed point of the renormalization group equation. The stability of this point depends on the relation between the exponents in the energy spectrum ${\cal E} \propto k^{1-y}$ and the dispersion law $ω\propto k^{2-η}$. The second analyzed problem is the passive advection of a scalar field by this velocity ensemble. Correlation functions of the scalar field exhibit anomalous scaling behavior in the inertial-convective range. We demonstrate that in accordance with Kolmogorov's hypothesis of the local symmetry restoration, the main contribution to the operator product expansion is given by the isotropic operator, while anisotropic terms should be considered only as corrections.

Quantized electron transport through graphene nanoconstrictions

We study the quantization of Dirac fermions in lithographically defined graphene nanoconstrictions. We observe quantized conductance in single nanoconstrictions fabricated on top of a thin hexamethyldisilazane layer over a Si/SiO_2 wafer. This nanofabrication method allows us to obtain well defined edges in the nanoconstrictions, thus reducing the effects of edge roughness on the conductance. We prove the occurrence of ballistic transport and identify several size quantization plateaus in the conductance at low temperature. Experimental data and numerical simulations show good agreement, demonstrating that the smoothing of the plateaus is not related to edge roughness but to quantum interference effects.

Binding energies of the $1s^2\,2s\,2p\, ^3P_{0,2}$ states of berylliumlike xenon

Binding energies of the $^3P_0$ and $^3P_2$ levels of the $1s^2\,2s\,2p$ electron configuration in berylliumlike xenon are rigorously evaluated using ab initio QED approach. All relevant one- and many-electron QED contributions are accounted for up to the second order of the perturbation theory. The interelectronic-interaction effects of the third and higher orders are considered within the Breit approximation. Nuclear recoil effect is taken into account as well. In addition, we study all possible levels of the configuration $1s^2\,2s\,2p$, namely $^1P_1$ and $^3P_{0,1,2}$, by means of the configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method in berylliumlike neon, iron, and xenon. In this case the QED effects are treated approximately within the model QED approach. The obtained theoretical predictions are compared with the results of previous relativistic calculations and high-precision measurements.

Nuclear recoil effect on the binding energies in highly charged He-like ions

The most precise to-date evaluation of the nuclear recoil effect on the $n=1$ and $n=2$ energy levels of He-like ions is presented in the range $Z=12-100$. The one-electron recoil contribution is calculated within the framework of the rigorous QED approach to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in the parameter $αZ$. The two-electron $m/M$ recoil term is calculated employing the $1/Z$ perturbation theory. The recoil contribution of the zeroth order in $1/Z$ is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$, while the $1/Z$ term is calculated using the Breit approximation. The recoil corrections of the second and higher orders in $1/Z$ are taken into account within the nonrelativistic approach. The obtained results are compared with the previous evaluation of this effect [A. N. Artemyev et al., Phys. Rev. A 71, 062104 (2005)].

Recoil effect on the g factor of Li-like ions

The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of Li-like ions is evaluated. The one-electron recoil contribution is treated within the framework of the rigorous QED approach to first order in the electron-to-nucleus mass ratio $m/M$ and to all orders in the parameter $αZ$. These calculations are performed in a range $Z=3-92$. The two-electron recoil term is calculated for low- and middle-$Z$ ions within the Breit approximation using a four-component approach. The results for the two-electron recoil part obtained in the paper strongly disagree with the previous calculations performed using an effective two-component Hamiltonian. The obtained value for the recoil effect is used to calculate the isotope shift of the $g$ factor of Li-like $^{A}$Ca$^{17+}$ with $A=40$ and $A=48$ which was recently measured. It is found that the new theoretical value for the isotope shift is closer to the experimental one than the previously obtained value.

Nuclear recoil effect on $g$ factor of heavy ions: prospects for tests of quantum electrodynamics in a new region

The nuclear recoil effect on the $g$ factor of H- and Li-like heavy ions is evaluated to all orders in $αZ$. The calculations include an approximate treatment of the nuclear size and the electron-electron interaction corrections to the recoil effect. As the result, the second largest contribution to the theoretical uncertainty of the $g$-factor values of $^{208}$Pb$^{79+}$ and $^{238}$U$^{89+}$ is strongly reduced. Special attention is paid to tests of the QED recoil effect on the $g$ factor in experiments with heavy ions. It is found that, while the QED recoil effect on the $g$-factor value is masked by the uncertainties of the nuclear size and nuclear polarization contributions, it can be probed on a few-percent level in the specific difference of the $g$ factors of H- and Li-like heavy ions. This provides a unique opportunity to test QED in a new region --- strong-coupling regime beyond the Furry picture.

Nuclear recoil effect on the g factor of middle-Z boronlike ions

The nuclear recoil correction to the g factor of boronlike ions is evaluated within the lowest-order relativistic (Breit) approximation. The interelectronic-interaction effects are taken into account to the first order of the perturbation theory in 1/Z. Higher orders in 1/Z are partly accounted for by means of the effective screening potential. The most accurate up-to-date values of this contribution are presented for the ions in the range Z=10-20.

Lattice thermal conductivity of graphene nanostructures

Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is used to investigate the heat current due to the atomic lattice vibrations in graphene nanoribbons and nanorings under a thermal gradient. We consider a wide range of temperature, nanoribbon widths up to 6nm and the effect of moderate edge disorder. We find that narrow graphene nanorings can efficiently suppress the lattice thermal conductivity at low temperatures (~100K), as compared to nanoribbons of the same width. Remarkably, rough edges do not appear to have a large impact on lattice energy transport through graphene nanorings while nanoribbons seem more affected by imperfections. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the effects of hydrogen-saturated edges can be neglected in these graphene nanostructures.

Ground-state ionization energies of boronlike ions

High-precision QED calculations of the ground-state ionization energies are performed for all boronlike ions with the nuclear charge numbers in the range $16 \leqslant Z\leqslant 96$. The rigorous QED calculations are performed within the extended Furry picture and include all many-electron QED effects up to the second order of the perturbation theory. The contributions of the third- and higher-order electron-correlation effects are accounted for within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization effects are taken into account as well. In comparison with the previous evaluations of the ground-state ionization energies of boronlike ions the accuracy of the theoretical predictions has been improved significantly.

Isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions

Isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions are evaluated for a wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=8-92. The calculations of the relativistic nuclear recoil and nuclear size effects are performed using a large scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The corresponding QED corrections are also taken into account. The results of the calculations are compared with the theoretical values obtained with other methods. The accuracy of the isotope shifts of the 2$p_{3/2}$-2$p_{1/2}$ transition in B-like ions is significantly improved.

Ionization energies along beryllium isoelectronic sequence

Ionization energies for the ground state of berylliumlike ions with nuclear charge numbers in the range Z=16-96 are rigorously evaluated. The calculations merge the ab initio QED treatment in the first and second orders of the perturbation theory in the fine-structure constant $α$ with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions evaluated within the Breit approximation. The nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization effects are taken into account. The accuracy of the ionization energies obtained has been significantly improved in comparison with previous calculations.

QED calculation of the ground-state energy of berylliumlike ions

Ab initio QED calculations of the ground-state binding energies of berylliumlike ions are performed for the wide range of the nuclear charge number: Z=18-96. The calculations are carried out in the framework of the extended Furry picture starting with three different types of the screening potential. The rigorous QED calculations up to the second order of the perturbation theory are combined with the third- and higher-order electron-correlation contributions obtained within the Breit approximation by the use of the large-scale configuration-interaction Dirac-Fock-Sturm method. The effects of nuclear recoil and nuclear polarization are taken into account. The ionization potentials are obtained by subtracting the binding energies of the corresponding lithiumlike ions. In comparison with the previous calculations the accuracy of the binding energies and the ionization potentials is significantly improved.

Enhancing thermoelectric properties of graphene quantum rings

We study the thermoelectric properties of rectangular graphene rings connected symmetrically or asymmetrically to the leads. A side-gate voltage applied across the ring allows for the precise control of the electric current flowing through the system. The transmission coefficient of the rings manifests Breit-Wigner line-shapes and/or Fano line-shapes, depending on the connection configuration, the width of nanoribbons forming the ring and the side-gate voltage. We find that the thermopower and the figure of merit are greatly enhanced when the chemical potential is tuned close to resonances. Such enhancement is even more pronounced in the vicinity of Fano like anti-resonances which can be induced by a side-gate voltage independently of the geometry. This opens a possibility to use the proposed device as a tunable thermoelectric generator.

Strong spin-dependent negative differential resistance in composite graphene superlattices

We find clear signatures of spin-dependent negative differential resistance in compound systems comprising a graphene nanoribbon and a set of ferromagnetic insulator strips deposited on top of it. The periodic array of ferromagnetic strips induces a proximity exchange splitting of the electronic states in graphene, resulting in the appearance of a superlattice with a spin-dependent energy spectrum. The electric current through the device can be highly polarized and both the current and its polarization manifest non-monotonic dependence on the bias voltage. The device operates therefore as an Esaki spin diode, which opens possibilities to design new spintronic circuits.

On the resonant optical bistability condition

We address a two level system in an environment interacting with the electromagnetic field in the dipole approximation. The resonant optical bistability induced by local-field effects is studied by considering the relationship between the population difference and the excitation field. The diversity of various systems is included by accounting for the system self-action via the surface part of the Green's dyadic in the general form. The bistability condition and the exact solution of the steady state optical Bloch equations at the absolute bistability threshold are derived analytically.

Effects of turbulent mixing on critical behaviour: Renormalization group analysis of the Potts model

Critical behaviour of a system, subjected to strongly anisotropic turbulent mixing, is studied by means of the field theoretic renormalization group. Specifically, relaxational stochastic dynamics of a non-conserved multicomponent order parameter of the Ashkin-Teller-Potts model, coupled to a random velocity field with prescribed statistics, is considered. The velocity is taken Gaussian, white in time, with correlation function of the form $\propto δ(t-t') /|{\bf k}_{\bot}|^{d-1+ξ}$, where ${\bf k}_{\bot}$ is the component of the wave vector, perpendicular to the distinguished direction ("direction of the flow") --- the $d$-dimensional generalization of the ensemble introduced by Avellaneda and Majda [1990 {\it Commun. Math. Phys.} {\bf 131} 381] within the context of passive scalar advection. This model can describe a rich class of physical situations. It is shown that, depending on the values of parameters that define self-interaction of the order parameter and the relation between the exponent $ξ$ and the space dimension $d$, the system exhibits various types of large-scale scaling behaviour, associated with different infrared attractive fixed points of the renormalization-group equations. In addition to known asymptotic regimes (critical dynamics of the Potts model and passively advected field without self-interaction), existence of a new, non-equilibrium and strongly anisotropic, type of critical behaviour (universality class) is established, and the corresponding critical dimensions are calculated to the leading order of the double expansion in $ξ$ and $ε=6-d$ (one-loop approximation). The scaling appears strongly anisotropic in the sense that the critical dimensions related to the directions parallel and perpendicular to the flow are essentially different.
