Optical Conductivity Evidence of Clean-Limit Superconductivity in LiFeAs

We measured the optical conductivity of superconducting LiFeAs. In the superconducting state, the formation of the condensate leads to a spectral-weight loss and yields a penetration depth of 225 nm. No sharp signature of the superconducting gap is observed. This suggests that the system is likely in the clean limit. A Drude-Lorentz parametrization of the data in the normal state reveals a quasiparticle scattering rate supportive of spin fluctuations and proximity to a quantum critical point.

Eliashberg analysis of the optical conductivity in superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_{x}$ ($x \simeq 4$)

Superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_x$, $x\simeq 4$ films with $T^\prime$ structure and a $T_c$ of 27 K have been investigated by millimeter-wave transmission and broadband (infrared-to-ultraviolet) reflectivity measurements in the normal and superconducting state. The results obtained by both experimental methods show a consistent picture of the superconducting condensate formation below $T_c$. An Eliashberg analysis of the data proves $d$-wave superconductivity and unitary-limit impurity scattering of the charge carriers below $T_{c}$. The derived electron-exchange boson interaction spectral function $I^2χ(ω)$ shows only marginal changes at the superconducting transition with the mass enhancement factor $λ$, the first inverse moment of $I^2χ(ω)$, being equal to 4.16 at 30 K and to 4.25 at 4 K.

Optical study of superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_{x}$ with $x\simeq 4$

Superconducting Pr$_2$CuO$_x$, $x\simeq 4$ (PCO) films with $T^\prime$ structure and a $T_c$ of 27 K have been investigated by various optical methods in a wide frequency (7 - 55000 cm$^{-1}$) and temperature (2 to 300 K) range. The optical spectra do not reveal any indication of a normal-state gap formation. A Drude-like peak centered at zero frequency dominates the optical conductivity below 150 K. At higher temperatures, it shifts to finite frequencies. The detailed analysis of the low-frequency conductivity reveals that the Drude peak and a far-infrared (FIR) peak centered at about 300 cm$^{-1}$ persist at all temperatures. The FIR-peak spectral weight is found to grow at the expense of the Drude spectral weight with increasing temperature. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth follows a behavior typical for $d$-wave superconductors. The absolute value of the penetration depth for zero temperature is 1.6 $μ$m, indicating a rather low density of the superconducting condensate.

Observation of an inter-sublattice exchange magnon in CoCr$_2$O$_4$ and analysis of magnetic ordering

We report on an investigation of optical properties of multiferroic CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ at terahertz frequencies in magnetic fields up to 30 T. Below the ferrimagnetic transition (94 K), the terahertz response of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is dominated by a magnon mode, which shows a steep magnetic-field dependence. We ascribe this mode to an exchange resonance between two magnetic sublattices with different $g$-factors. In the framework of a simple two-sublattice model (the sublattices are formed by Co$^{2+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions), we find the inter-sublattice coupling constant, $λ= - (18 \pm 1)$ K, and trace the magnetization for each sublattice as a function of field. We show that the Curie temperature of the Cr$^{3+}$ sublattice, $Θ_{2}$ = $(49 \pm 2)$ K, coincides with the temperature range, where anomalies of the dielectric and magnetic properties of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have been reported in literature.

Proton Electrodynamics in Liquid Water

The dielectric spectrum of liquid water, $10^{4} - 10^{11}$ Hz, is interpreted in terms of diffusion of charges, formed as a result of self-ionization of H$_{2}$O molecules. This approach explains the Debye relaxation and the dc conductivity as two manifestations of this diffusion. The Debye relaxation is due to the charge diffusion with a fast recombination rate, $1/τ_{2}$, while the dc conductivity is a manifestation of the diffusion with a much slower recombination rate, $1/τ_{1}$. Applying a simple model based on Brownian-like diffusion, we find $τ_{2} \simeq 10^{-11}$ s and $τ_{1} \simeq 10^{-6}$ s, and the concentrations of the charge carriers, involved in each of the two processes, $N_{2} \simeq 5 \times 10^{26}$ m$^{-3}$ and $N_{1} \simeq 10^{14}$ m$^{-3}$. Further, we relate $N_{2}$ and $N_{1}$ to the total concentration of H$_{3}$O$^{+}$--OH$^{-}$ pairs and to the pH index, respectively, and find the lifetime of a single water molecule, $τ_{0} \simeq 10^{-9}$ s. Finally, we show that the high permittivity of water results mostly from flickering of separated charges, rather than from reorientations of intact molecular dipoles.

Optical study of superconducting Ga-rich layers in silicon

We performed phase-sensitive terahertz (0.12 - 1.2 THz) transmission measurements of Ga-enriched layers in silicon. Below the superconducting transition, T_{c} = 6.7 K, we find clear signatures of the formation of a superconducting condensate and of the opening of an energy gap in the optical spectra. The London penetration depth, λ(T), and the condensate density, n_{s} = λ^{2} 0)/λ^{2}(T), as functions of temperature demonstrate behavior, typical for conventional superconductors with λ(0) = 1.8 μm. The terahertz spectra can be well described within the framework of Eliashberg theory with strong electron-phonon coupling: the zero-temperature energy gap is 2Δ(0) = 2.64 meV and 2Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{c} = 4.6 \pm 0.1, consistent with the amorphous state of Ga. At temperatures just above T_{c}, the optical spectra demonstrate Drude behavior.

B-T phase diagram of CoCr2O4 in magnetic fields up to 14 T

We have measured the magnetization and specific heat of multiferroic CoCr2O4 in magnetic fields up to 14 T. The high-field magnetization measurements indicate a new phase transition at T* = 5 - 6 K. The phase between T* and the lock-in transition at 15 K is characterized by magnetic irreversibility. At higher magnetic fields, the irreversibility increases. Specific-heat measurements confirm the transition at T*, and also show irreversible behavior. We construct a field-temperature phase diagram of CoCr2O4.

Highly anisotropic energy gap in superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ from optical conductivity measurements

We have measured the complex dynamical conductivity, $σ= σ_{1} + iσ_{2}$, of superconducting Ba(Fe$_{0.9}$Co$_{0.1}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($T_{c} = 22$ K) at terahertz frequencies and temperatures 2 - 30 K. In the frequency dependence of $σ_{1}$ below $T_{c}$, we observe clear signatures of the superconducting energy gap opening. The temperature dependence of $σ_{1}$ demonstrates a pronounced coherence peak at frequencies below 15 cm$^{-1}$ (1.8 meV). The temperature dependence of the penetration depth, calculated from $σ_{2}$, shows power-law behavior at the lowest temperatures. Analysis of the conductivity data with a two-gap model, gives the smaller isotropic s-wave gap of $Δ_{A} = 3$ meV, while the larger gap is highly anisotropic with possible nodes and its rms amplitude is $Δ_{0} = 8$ meV. Overall, our results are consistent with a two-band superconductor with an $s_{\pm}$ gap symmetry.

Colossal dielectric constant up to GHz at room temperature

The search for new materials with extremely high ("colossal") dielectric constants, required for future electronics, is one of the most active fields of modern materials science. However, the applicability of the colossal-epsilon' materials, discovered so far, suffers from the fact that their dielectric constant, epsilon', only is huge in a limited frequency range below about 1 MHz. In the present report, we show that the dielectric properties of La15/8Sr1/8NiO4 surpass those of other materials. Especially, epsilon' retains its colossal magnitude of >10000 well into the GHz range. This material is prone to charge order and this spontaneous ordering process of the electronic subsystem can be assumed to play an important role in the generation of the observed unusual dielectric properties.

In situ determination of the energy dependence of the high-frequency mobility in polymers

The high-frequency mobility in disordered systems is governed by transport properties on mesoscopic length scales, which makes it a sensitive probe for the amount of local order. Here we present a method to measure the energy dependence of the high frequency mobility by combining an electrochemically gated transistor with in-situ quasi-optical measurements in the sub-terahertz domain. We apply this method to poly([2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethylocyloxy)]-p-phenylene vinylene) (OC_1C_10-PPV) and find a mobility at least as high as 0.1 cm^2V^-1s^-1.

Metal-insulator transition in YHx: scaling of the sub-THz conductivity

The established scaling laws of the conductivity with temperature and doping are strong indications for the quantum nature of the metal-insulator transition in YH$_x$. Here we report the first results on the frequency scaling of the conductivity. Samples were brought from the insulating to the metallic phase by carrier doping via illumination. In the metallic phase, the sub-terahertz conductivity coincides with the dc data. These results do not agree with the simplest picture of a quantum-phase transition.

Doping dependence of the gap anisotropy in LCCO studied by millimeter-wave spectroscopy

We measure the penetration depth of optimally doped and underdoped La2-xCexCuO4 in the millimeter frequency domain (4 - 7 cm-1) and for temperatures 2 K < T < 300 K. The penetration depth as function of temperature reveals significant changes on electron doping. It shows quadratic temperature dependence in underdoped samples, but increases almost exponentially at optimal doping. Significant changes in the gap anisotropy (or even in the gap symmetry) may account for this transition.

Far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity in electron-doped cuprate La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4

We performed far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity experiments in the electron-doped cuprate La_{2-x}Ce_xCuO_4 with x = 0.081 (underdoped regime, T_c = 25 K). The onset of the absorption in the superconducting state is gradual in frequency and is inconsistent with the isotropic s-wave gap. Instead, a narrow quasiparticle peak is observed at zero frequency and a second peak at finite frequencies, clear fingerprints of the conductivity in a d-wave superconductor. A far-infrared conductivity peak can be attributed to 4Delta_0, or to 2Delta_0 + Delta_spin, where Delta_spin is the resonance frequency of the spin-fluctuations. The infrared conductivity as well as the suppression of the quasiparticle scattering rate below T_c are qualitatively similar to the results in the hole-doped cuprates.

LiBC by polarized Raman spectroscopy: Evidence for lower crystal symmetry ?

The paper presents polarized Raman scattering study on a few-micron-size crystallite of LiBC with natural faces. The experiment on as grown sample has revealed a four lattice modes with frequencies at 1276 cm^-1, 830 cm^-1, 546 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1, respectively. The number of observed Raman lines and their selection rules are incompatible with the assumed D6h symmetry. The modes at 1276 cm^-1 and 170 cm^-1 correspond to the expected Raman active modes. In contrast with the superconducting compound MgB2, the B-C bond stretching mode (at 1276 cm^-1) has rather small damping. The two "forbidden" modes (at 830 cm^-1 and 546 cm^-1) disappeared after subsequent thermal treatment.

On the peak in the far-infrared conductivity of strongly anisotropic cuprates

We investigate the far-infrared and submillimeter-wave conductivity of electron-doped La_(2-x)Ce_xCuO_4 tilted 1 degree off from the ab-plane. The effective conductivity measured for this tilt angle reveals an intensive peak at finite frequency (ν~ 50 cm{-1}) due to a mixing of the in-plane and out-of-plane responses. The peak disappears for the pure in-plane response and transforms to the Drude-like contribution. Comparative analysis of the mixed and the in-plane contributions allows to extract the c-axis conductivity which shows a Josephson plasma resonance at 11.7 cm{-1} in the superconducting state.

Electronic and optical properties of LiBC

LiBC, a semiconducting ternary borocarbide constituted of the lightest elements only, has been synthesized and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction, dielectric spectroscopy, and conductivity measurements. Utilizing an infrared microscope the phonon spectrum has been investigated in single crystals. The in-plane B-C stretching mode has been detected at 150 meV, noticeably higher than in AlB2, a non-superconducting isostructural analog of MgB2. It is this stretching mode, which reveals a strong electron-phonon coupling in MgB2, driving it into a superconducting state below 40 K, and is believed to mediate predicted high-temperature superconductivity in hole-doped LiBC [H. Rosner, A. Kitaigorodsky, and W. E. Pickett, Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 127001 (2002)].

Materials with Colossal Dielectric Constant: Do They Exist?

Experimental evidence is provided that colossal dielectric constants, epsilon >= 1000, sometimes reported to exist in a broad temperature range, can often be explained by Maxwell-Wagner type contributions of depletion layers at the interface between sample and contacts, or at grain boundaries. We demonstrate this on a variety of different materials. We speculate that the largest intrinsic dielectric constant observed so far in non-ferroelectric materials is of order 100.
