Transition magnon modes in thin ferromagnetic nanogratings

This work presents micromagnetic simulations in ferromagnetic nanogratings for the full range of directions of an applied in-plane external magnetic field. We focus on the modification of the magnon mode characteristics when the magnetic field orientation is gradually changed between the classical Damon-Eshbach (DE) and backward-volume (BV) geometries. We found that in a specific range of field directions, the magnon mode parameters differ significantly from the parameters in the classical cases, namely, the modes are characterized by complex spatial distributions and have low group velocities. The center of this range corresponds to the direction of the external magnetic field, which gives the maximal nonuniform distribution of the static magnetization in the nanogratings.

Laser-induced magnetization precession in individual magnetoelastic domains of a multiferroic CoFeB/BaTiO$_3$ composite

Using a magneto-optical pump-probe technique with micrometer spatial resolution we show that magnetization precession can be launched in individual magnetic domains imprinted in a Co$_{40}$Fe$_{40}$B$_{20}$ (CoFeB) layer by elastic coupling to ferroelectric domains in a BaTiO$_{3}$ substrate. The dependence of the precession parameters on external magnetic field strength and orientation reveal that by laser-induced ultrafast partial quenching of the magnetoelastic coupling parameter of CoFeB by $\approx$27% along with 10% ultrafast demagnetization trigger the magnetization precession. The relation between the laser-induced reduction of the magnetoelastic coupling and the demagnetization is approximated by the $n(n+1)/2$-law with n$\approx$2. This correspondence confirms the thermal origin of the laser-induced anisotropy change. Based on the analysis and modeling of the excited precession we find signatures of laser-induced precessional switching, which occurs when the magnetic field is applied along the hard magnetization axis and its value is close to the effective magnetoelastic anisotropy field. The precession excitation process in an individual magnetoelastic domain is found to be unaffected by neighboring domains. This makes laser-induced changes of magnetoelastic anisotropy a promising tool for driving magnetization dynamics and switching in composite multiferroics with spatial selectivity.

Ultrafast insulator-to-metal transition in VO$_2$ nanostructures assisted by picosecond strain pulses

Strain engineering is a powerful technology which exploits stationary external or internal stress of specific spatial distribution for controlling the fundamental properties of condensed materials and nanostructures. This advanced technique modulates in space the carrier density and mobility, the optical absorption and, in strongly correlated systems, the phase, e.g. insulator/metal or ferromagnetic/paramagnetic. However, while successfully accessing nanometer length scale, strain engineering is yet to be brought down to ultrafast time scales allowing strain-assisted control of state of matter at THz frequencies. In our work we demonstrate a control of an optically-driven insulator-to-metal phase transition by a picosecond strain pulse, which paves a way to ultrafast strain engineering in nanostructures with phase transitions. This is realized by simultaneous excitation of VO$_2$ nanohillocks by a 170-fs laser and picosecond strain pulses finely timed with each other. By monitoring the transient optical reflectivity of the VO$_2$, we show that strain pulses, depending on the sign of the strain at the moment of optical excitation, increase or decrease the fraction of VO$_2$ which undergoes an ultrafast phase transition. Transient strain of moderate amplitude $\sim0.1$% applied during ultrafast photo-induced non-thermal transition changes the fraction of VO$_2$ in the laser-induced phase by $\sim1$%. By contrast, if applied after the photo-excitation when the phase transformations of the material are governed by thermal processes, transient strain of the same amplitude produces no measurable effect on the phase state.

Optical excitation of single- and multi-mode magnetization precession in Galfenol nanolayers

We demonstrate a variety of precessional responses of the magnetization to ultrafast optical excitation in nanolayers of Galfenol (Fe,Ga), which is a ferromagnetic material with large saturation magnetization and enhanced magnetostriction. The particular properties of Galfenol, including cubic magnetic anisotropy and weak damping, allow us to detect up to 6 magnon modes in a 120-nm layer, and a single mode with effective damping $α_{eff}$ = 0.005 and frequency up to 100 GHz in a 4-nm layer. This is the highest frequency observed to date in time-resolved experiments with metallic ferromagnets. We predict that detection of magnetization precession approaching THz frequencies should be possible with Galfenol nanolayers.

Optically driven spin pumping mediating collective magnetization dynamics in a spin valve structure

We demonstrate spin pumping, i.e. the generation of a pure spin current by precessing magnetization, without application of microwave radiation commonly used in spin pumping experiments. We use femtosecond laser pulses to simultaneously launch the magnetization precession in each of two ferromagnetic layers of a Galfenol-based spin valve and monitor the temporal evolution of the magnetizations. The spin currents generated by the precession cause a dynamic coupling of the two layers. This coupling has dissipative character and is especially efficient when the precession frequencies in the two layers are in resonance, where coupled modes with strongly different decay rates are formed.

Generation of a localized microwave magnetic field by coherent phonons in a ferromagnetic nanograting

A high-amplitude microwave magnetic field localized at the nanoscale is a desirable tool for various applications within the rapidly developing field of nanomagnetism. Here, we drive magnetization precession by coherent phonons in a metal ferromagnetic nanograting and generate ac-magnetic induction with extremely high amplitude (up to $10$ mT) and nanometer scale localization in the grating grooves. We trigger the magnetization by a laser pulse which excites localized surface acoustic waves. The developed technique has prospective uses in several areas of research and technology, including spatially resolved access to spin states for quantum technologies.

The effect of dynamical compressive and shear strain on magnetic anisotropy in low symmetry ferromagnetic film

Dynamical strain generated upon excitation of a metallic film by a femtosecond laser pulse may become a versatile tool enabling control of magnetic state of thin films and nanostructures via inverse magnetostriction on a picosecond time scale. Here we explore two alternative approaches to manipulate magnetocrystalline anisotropy and excite magnetization precession in a low-symmetry film of a magnetic metallic alloy galfenol (Fe,Ga) either by injecting picosecond strain pulse into it from a substrate or by generating dynamical strain of complex temporal profile in the film directly. In the former case we realize ultrafast excitation of magnetization dynamics solely by strain pulses. In the latter case optically-generated strain emerged abruptly in the film modifies its magnetocrystalline anisotropy, competing with heat-induced change of anisotropy parameters. We demonstrate that the optically-generated strain remains efficient for launching magnetization precession, when the heat-induced changes of anisotropy parameters do not trigger the precession anymore. We emphasize that in both approaches the ultrafast change of magnetic anisotropy mediating the precession excitation relies on mixed, compressive and shear, character of the dynamical strain, which emerges due to low-symmetry of the metallic film under study.

Resonant driving of magnetization precession in a ferromagnetic layer by coherent monochromatic phonons

We realize resonant driving of the magnetization precession by monochromatic phonons in a thin ferromagnetic layer embedded into a phononic Fabry-Perot resonator. A femtosecond laser pulse excites resonant phonon modes of the structure in the 10-40 GHz frequency range. By applying an external magnetic field, we tune the precession frequency relative to the frequency of the phonons localized in the cavity and observe the enormous increase in the amplitude of the magnetization precession when the frequencies of free magnetization precession and phonons localized in the cavity are equal.

Hypersonic properties of monodisperse spherical mesoporous silica particles

We use the picosecond acoustic pump-probe technique to study the elastic properties of monodispersemesoporous silica spheres filled with nickel and deposited in the form of opal-like films on silica substrates. The picosecond pump-probe optical transmission signal shows harmonic oscillations corresponding to the lower energy radial Lamb mode in the vibrational spectrum of the spheres. These oscillations, with a frequency of several gigahertz last for several nanoseconds in the spheres with diameter 1050 nm, showing high homogeneity of the sphere parameters. By analysis of the oscillation spectrum of films with different sphere diameter and nickel content we obtain the elastic moduli of the mesoporous silica spheres.

Picosecond opto-acoustic interferometry and polarimetry in high-index GaAs

By means of a metal opto-acoustic transducer we generate quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses in a (311)-GaAs substrate and monitor their propagation by picosecond acoustic interferometry. By probing at the sample side opposite to the transducer the signals related to the compressive and shear strain pulses can be separated in time. In addition to conventional monitoring of the reflected probe light intensity we monitor also the polarization rotation of the optical probe beam. This polarimetric technique results in improved sensitivity of detection and provides comprehensive information about the elasto-optical anisotropy. The experimental observations are in a good agreement with a theoretical analysis.

Magnetization precession induced by quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses in (311) ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As

Quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses injected into a ferromagnetic (311) (Ga,Mn)As film induce dynamical shear strain in the film, thereby modulating the magnetic anisotropy and inducing resonant precession of the magnetization at a frequency ~10 GHz. The modulation of the out-of-plane magnetization component by the quasitransverse strain reaches amplitudes as large as 10% of the equilibrium magnetization. Our theoretical analysis is in good agreement with the observed results, thus providing a strategy for ultrafast magnetization control in ferromagnetic films by strain pulses.

Selective spin wave excitation in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layers by picosecond strain pulses

We demonstrate selective excitation of a spin wave mode in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As film by picosecond strain pulses. For a certain range of magnetic fields applied in the layer plane only a single frequency is detected for the magnetization precession. We explain this selectivity of spin mode excitation by the necessity of spatial matching of magnon and phonon eigenfunctions, which represents a selection rule analogous to momentum conservation for magnon-phonon interaction in bulk ferromagnetic materials.

Theory of magnetization precession induced by a picosecond strain pulse in ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As

A theoretical model of the coherent precession of magnetization excited by a picosecond acoustic pulse in a ferromagnetic semiconductor layer of (Ga,Mn)As is developed. The short strain pulse injected into the ferromagnetic layer modifies the magnetocrystalline anisotropy resulting in a tilt of the equilibrium orientation of magnetization and subsequent magnetization precession. We derive a quantitative model of this effect using the Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization that is precessing in the time-dependent effective magnetic field. After developing the general formalism, we then provide a numerical analysis for a certain structure and two typical experimental geometries in which an external magnetic field is applied either along the hard or the easy magnetization axis. As a result we identify three main factors, which determine the precession amplitude: the magnetocrystalline anisotropy of the ferromagnetic layer, its thickness, and the strain pulse parameters.

Coherent magnetization precession in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As induced by picosecond acoustic pulses

We show that the magnetization of a thin ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As layer can be modulated by picosecond acoustic pulses. In this approach a picosecond strain pulse injected into the structure induces a tilt of the magnetization vector M, followed by the precession of M around its equilibrium orientation. This effect can be understood in terms of changes in magneto-crystalline anisotropy induced by the pulse. A model where only one anisotropy constant is affected by the strain pulse provides a good description of the observed time-dependent response.

Multiple transfer of angular momentum quanta from a spin-polarized hole to magnetic ions in ZnMnSe/ZnBeSe quantum wells

The magnetization kinetics in (Zn,Mn)Se/(Zn,Be)Se quantum wells has been studied on a ps-time scale after pulsed laser excitation. The magnetization induced by an external magnetic field is reduced by up to 30% during ~100 ps due to spin and energy transfer from photocarriers to Mn spin system. The giant Zeeman splitting leads to a complete spin polarization of the carriers, resulting in a strong suppression of flip-flop processes between carriers and magnetic ions. Therefore a multiple angular momentum transfer from each spin-polarized hole to the Mn ions becomes the dominant mechanism in the magnetization dynamics. A model based on spin-momentum coupling in the valence band is suggested for explaining this transfer.

Spin control in heteromagnetic nanostructures

The rapidly expanding research in Spintronics, the electronics utilizing the electron spin instead of its charge, is driven by the very interesting potential applications. The actual task is to develop principles for the spin manipulations in spintronic devices. In this Report we suggest and verify experimentally a concept of heteromagnetic semiconductor structures. It is based on spin diffusion between layers of the nanostructure with different magnetic properties and allows controlling the spin-switching rate for magnetic ions. A ten times increase of spin-lattice relaxation rate of magnetic Mn-ions is achieved in (Zn,Mn)Se/(Be,Mn)Te heteromagnetic structures with an inhomogeneous distribution of Mn-ions.
