Vortex qubit based on an annular Josephson junction containing a microshort

We report theoretical and experimental work on the development of a vortex qubit based on a microshort in an annular Josephson junction. The microshort creates a potential barrier for the vortex, which produces a double-well potential under the application of an in-plane magnetic field; The field strength tunes the barrier height. A one-dimensional model for this system is presented, from which we calculate the vortex depinning current and attempt frequency as well as the interwell coupling. Implementation of an effective microshort is achieved via a section of insulating barrier that is locally wider in the junction plane. Using a junction with this geometry we demonstrate classical state preparation and readout. The vortex is prepared in a given potential well by sending a series of "shaker" bias current pulses through the junction. Readout is accomplished by measuring the vortex depinning current.

Escape Rate Measurements and Microwave Spectroscopy of 0, pi, and 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson Tunnel Junctions

We present experimental studies of high quality underdamped 0, pi, and 0-pi ferromagnetic Josephson tunnel junctions of intermediate length L (lambda_J < L < 5 lambda_J, where lambda_J is the Josephson penetration depth). The junctions are fabricated as Nb/Al_2O_3/Cu_40Ni_60/Nb Superconductor-Insulator-Ferromagnet-Superconductor heterostructures. Using microwave spectroscopy, we have investigated the eigenfrequencies of 0, pi, and 0-pi Josephson junctions in the temperature range 1.9K...320mK. Harmonic, subharmonic and superharmonic pumping is observed in experiment, and the experimental data are compared with numerical simulations. Escape rate measurements without applied microwaves at temperatures T down to 20mK show that the width of the switching current histogram decreases with temperature and saturates below T=150mK. We analyze our data in the framework of the short junction model. The differences between experimental data and theoretical predictions are discussed.

Coherent oscillations in a superconducting tunable flux qubit manipulated without microwaves

We experimentally demonstrate the coherent oscillations of a tunable superconducting flux qubit by manipulating its energy potential with a nanosecond-long pulse of magnetic flux. The occupation probabilities of two persistent current states oscillate at a frequency ranging from 6 GHz to 21 GHz, tunable via the amplitude of the flux pulse. The demonstrated operation mode allows to realize quantum gates which take less than 100 ps time and are thus much faster compared to other superconducting qubits. An other advantage of this type of qubit is its insensitivity to both thermal and magnetic field fluctuations.

Static and dynamic properties of 0, pi, and 0-pi ferromagnetic tunnel Josephson Junctions

We present experimental studies of static and dynamic properties of 0, pi and 0-pi superconductor-insulator-ferromagnet-superconductor (SIFS) Josephson junctions of small and intermediate length. In the underdamped limit these junctions exhibit a rich dynamical behavior such as resonant steps on the current-voltage characteristics. Varying the experimental conditions, zero field steps, Fiske steps and Shapiro steps are observed with a high resolution. A strong signature of the 0-pi Josephson junction is demonstrated by measuring the critical current as a function of two components (B_x, B_y) of an in-plane magnetic field. The experimental observation of a half-integer zero field step in 0-pi SIFS junctions is presented.

Andreev reflection and strongly enhanced magnetoresistance oscillations in GaInAs/InP heterostructures with superconducting contacts

We study the magnetotransport in small hybrid junctions formed by high-mobility GaInAs/InP heterostructures coupled to superconducting (S) and normal metal (N) terminals. Highly transmissive superconducting contacts to a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) located in a GaInAs/InP heterostructure are realized by using a Au/NbN layer system. The magnetoresistance of the S/2DEG/N structures is studied as a function of dc bias current and temperature. At bias currents below a critical value, the resistance of the S/2DEG/N structures develops a strong oscillatory dependence on the magnetic field, with an amplitude of the oscillations considerably larger than that of the reference N/2DEG/N structures. The experimental results are qualitatively explained by taking Andreev reflection in high magnetic fields into account.

Temperature dependence of coherent oscillations in Josephson phase qubits

We experimentally investigate the temperature dependence of Rabi oscillations and Ramsey fringes in superconducting phase qubits driven by microwave pulses. In a wide range of temperatures, we find that both the decay time and the amplitude of these coherent oscillations remain nearly unaffected by thermal fluctuations. The oscillations are observed well above the crossover temperature from thermally activated escape to quantum tunneling for undriven qubits. In the two-level limit, coherent qubit response rapidly vanishes as soon as the energy of thermal fluctuations kT becomes larger than the energy level spacing of the qubit. Our observations shed new light on the origin of decoherence in superconducting qubits. The experimental data suggest that, without degrading already achieved coherence times, phase qubits can be operated at temperatures much higher than those reported till now.

Quantum cavity modes in spatially extended Josephson systems

We report a theoretical study of the macroscopic quantum dynamics in spatially extended Josephson systems. We focus on a Josephson tunnel junction of finite length placed in an externally applied magnetic field. In such a system, electromagnetic waves in the junction are excited in the form of cavity modes manifested by Fiske resonances, which are easily observed experimentally. We show that in the quantum regime various characteristics of the junction as its critical current $I_c$, width of the critical current distribution $σ$, escape rate $Γ$ from the superconducting state to a resistive one, and the time-dependent probability $P(t)$ of the escape are influenced by the number of photons excited in the junction cavity. Therefore, these characteristics can be used as a tool to measure the quantum states of photons in the junction, e.g. quantum fluctuations, coherent and squeezed states, entangled Fock states, etc.

Enhanced Macroscopic Quantum Tunneling in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ Intrinsic Josephson Junction Stacks

We have investigated macroscopic quantum tunneling in Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ intrinsic Josephson junctions at millikelvin temperatures using microwave irradiation. Measurements show that the escape rate for uniformly switching stacks of N junctions is about $N^2$ times higher than that of a single junction having the same plasma frequency. We argue that this gigantic enhancement of macroscopic quantum tunneling rate in stacks is boosted by current fluctuations which occur in the series array of junctions loaded by the impedance of the environment.

Laser Scanning Microscopy of HTS Films and Devices

The work describes the capabilities of Laser Scanning Microscopy (LSM) as a spatially resolved method of testing high_Tc materials and devices. The earlier results obtained by the authors are briefly reviewed. Some novel applications of the LSM are illustrated, including imaging the HTS responses in rf mode, probing the superconducting properties of HTS single crystals, development of twobeam laser scanning microscopy. The existence of the phase slip lines mechanism of resistivity in HTS materials is proven by LSM imaging.

The origin of flux-flow resistance oscillations in BiSrCaCuO: Fiske steps in a single junction?

We propose an alternative explanation to the oscillations of the flux-flow resistance found in several previously published experiments with BiSrCaCuO stacks. It has been argued by the previous authors that the period of the oscillations corresponding to the field needed to add one vortex per two intrinsic Josephson junctions is associated with a moving triangular lattice of vortices (out-of-phase mode), while the period corresponding to one vortex per one junction is due to the square lattice (in-phase mode). In contrast, we show that both type of oscillations may occur in a single-layer Josephson junction and thus the above interpretation is inconsistent.

Resonant plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders

We study the resonant scattering of plasmons (linear waves) by discrete breather excitations in Josephson junction ladders. We predict the existence of Fano resonances, and find them by computing the resonant vanishing of the transmission coefficient. We propose an experimental setup of detecting these resonances, and conduct numerical simulations which demonstrate the possibility to observe Fano resonances in the plasmon scattering by discrete breathers in Josephson junction ladders.

Nonlocal electrodynamics of long ultra-narrow Josephson junctions: Experiment and theory

We experimentally and theoretically investigate electromagnetic cavity modes in ultra-narrow Al-AlO$_x$-Al and Nb-AlO$_x$-Nb long Josephson junctions. Experiments show that the voltage spacing between the Fiske steps on the current-voltage characteristics of sub-$μ$m wide and several hundred $μ$m long Al-AlO$_x$-Al and Nb-AlO$_x$-Nb Josephson junctions increases when decreasing the width of a junction. This effect is explained by stray magnetic fields, which become important for narrow junctions. Theoretical estimates of the Fiske step voltage based on a nonlocal wave propagation equation are in good agreement with our experimental data. Using the nonlocal model, we determine the size and mass of a Josephson vortex by means of a variational approach, and relate vortex size to the experimentally measured critical magnetic field of the junction.

Microwave Current Imaging in Passive HTS Components by Low-Temperature Laser Scanning Microscopy (LTLSM)

We have used the LTLSM technique for a spatially resolved investigation of the microwave transport properties, nonlinearities and material inhomogeneities in an operating coplanar waveguide YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} (YBCO) microwave resonator on an LaAlO_3 (LAO) substrate. The influence of twin-domain blocks, in-plane rotated grains, and micro-cracks in the YBCO film on the nonuniform rf current distribution were measured with a micrometer-scale spatial resolution. The impact of the peaked edge currents and rf field penetration into weak links on the linear device performance were studied as well. The LTLSM capabilities and its future potential for non-destructive characterization of the microwave properties of superconducting circuits are discussed.

Microwave-induced flow of vortices in long Josephson junctions

We report experimental and numerical study of microwave-induced flow of vortices in long Josephson junctions at zero dc magnetic field. Our intriguing observation is that applying an ac-bias of a small frequency $f \ll f_p $ and sufficiently large amplitude changes the current-voltage characteristics ($I$-$V$ curve) of the junction in a way similar to the effect of dc magnetic field, well known as the flux-flow behavior. The characteristic voltage $V$ of this low voltage branch increases with the power $P$ of microwave radiation as $V_{s}\propto P^α$ with the index $α\simeq 0.5 $. Experiments using a low-temperature laser scanning microscope unambiguously indicate the motion of Josephson vortices driven by microwaves. Numerical simulations agree with the experimental data and show strongly {\it irregular} vortex motion. We explain our results by exploiting an analogy between the microwave-induced vortex flow in long Josephson junctions and incoherent multi-photon absorption in small Josephson junctions in the presence of large thermal fluctuations. In the case of long Josephson junctions the spatially-temporal chaos in the vortex motion mimics the thermal fluctuations. In accordance with this analogy, a control of the intensity of chaos in a long junction by changing its damping constant leads to a pronounced change in the shape of the $I$-$V$ curve. Our results provide a possible explanation to previously measured but not yet understood microwave-driven properties of intrinsic Josephson junctions in high-temperature superconductors.

Ratchet-like dynamics of fluxons in annular Josephson junctions driven by bi-harmonic microwave fields

Experimental observation of the unidirectional motion of a topological soliton driven by a bi-harmonic ac force of zero mean is reported. The observation is made by measuring the current-voltage characteristics for a fluxon trapped in an annular Josephson junction that was placed into a microwave field. The measured dependence of the fluxon mean velocity (rectified voltage) at zero dc bias versus the phase shift between the first and second harmonic of the driving force is in qualitative agreement with theoretical expectations.

Enhancement of Josephson phase diffusion by microwaves

We report an experimental and theoretical study of the phase diffusion in small Josephson junctions under microwave irradiation. A peculiar enhancement of the phase diffusion by microwaves is observed. The enhancement manifests itself by a pronounced current peak in the current-voltage characteristics. The voltage position $V_{\rm top}$ of the peak increases with the power $P$ of microwave radiation as $V_{\rm top}\propto\sqrt P$, while its current amplitude weakly decreases with $P$. As the microwave frequency increases, the peak feature evolves into Shapiro steps with finite slope. Our theoretical analysis taking into account the enhancement of incoherent superconducting current by multi-photon absorption is in good agreement with experimental data.

Andreev reflection and enhanced subgap conductance in NbN/Au/InGaAs-InP junctions

We report on the fabrication of highly transparent superconductor/normal metal/two-dimensional electron gas junctions formed by a superconducting NbN electrode, a thin (10nm) Au interlayer, and a two-dimensional electron gas in a InGaAs/InP heterostructure. High junction transparency has been achieved by exploiting of a newly developed process of Au/NbN evaporation and rapid annealing at 400C. This allowed us to observe for the first time a decrease in the differential resistance with pronounced double-dip structure within the superconducting energy gap in superconductor-2DEG proximity systems. The effect of a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane of the 2DEG on the differential resistance of the interface was studied. It has been found that the reduced subgap resistance remains in high magnetic fields. Zero-field data are analyzed within the previously established quasiclassical model for the proximity effect.

Spontaneous creation of discrete breathers in Josephson arrays

We report on the experimental generation of discrete breather states (intrinsic localized modes) in frustrated Josephson arrays. Our experiments indicate the formation of discrete breathers during the transition from the static to the dynamic (whirling) system state, induced by a uniform external current. Moreover, spatially extended resonant states, driven by a uniform current, are observed to evolve into localized breather states. Experiments were performed on single Josephson plaquettes as well as open-ended Josephson ladders with 10 and 20 cells. We interpret the breather formation as the result of the penetration of vortices into the system.
