Quantum dissociation of a vortex-antivortex pair in a long Josephson junction

We report a theoretical analysis and experimental observation of the quantum dynamics of a single vortex-antivortex (VAV) pair confined in a long narrow annular Josephson junction. The switching of the junction from the superconducting state to the resistive state occurs via the dissociation of a pinned VAV pair. The pinning potential is controlled by external magnetic field $H$ and dc bias current $I$. We predict a specific magnetic field dependence of the oscillatory energy levels of the pinned VAV state and the crossover to a {\it macroscopic quantum tunneling} mechanism of VAV dissociation at low temperatures. Our analysis explains the experimentally observed {\it increase} of the width of the switching current distribution $P(I)$ with $H$ and the crossover to the quantum regime at the temperature of about 100 mK.

Quantum escape of the phase in a strongly driven Josephson junction

A quantum mechanical analysis of the Josephson phase escape in the presence of both dc and ac bias currents is presented. We find that the potential barrier for the escape of the phase is effectively suppressed as the resonant condition occurs, i.e. when the frequency $ω$ of the ac bias matches the Josephson junction energy level separation. This effect manifests itself by a pronounced drop in the dependence of the switching current $I_s$ on the power $W$ of the applied microwave radiation and by a peculiar double-peak structure in the switching current distribution $P(I_s)$. The developed theory is in a good accord with an experiment which we also report in this paper. The obtained features can be used to characterize certain aspects of the quantum-mechanical behavior of the Josephson phase, such as the energy level quantization, the Rabi frequency of coherent oscillations and the effect of damping.

Two-Fluxon Dynamics in Annular Josephson Junction

Two-fluxon state in an annular Josephson junction in the presence of external magnetic field is studied analytically, numerically and experimentally. We obtain an analytical expression for the potential of interaction between the fluxons moving at arbitrary velocities (without the use of the "nonrelativistic" approximation). Treating the fluxons as quasi-particles, we then derive equations of motion for them. Direct simulations of the full extended sine-Gordon equation are in good agreement with results produced by the analytical model, in a relevant parameter region. Experimental data qualitatively agree with the numerical results.

Josephson vortex interaction mediated by cavity modes: Tunable coupling for superconducting qubits

A quantum-mechanical model for the interaction of Josephson vortices (fluxons) embedded in superconducting transmission line is presented. The vortices interact through emission and absorption of linear waves (electromagnetic cavity modes). We show that in a classical regime this peculiar type of interaction is determined by the product of instantaneous velocities of fluxons. In a quantum regime, this property provides tunable coupling between vortices which can be used for entanglement of vortex qubits. The physical mechanism of the vortex interaction is similar to that proposed for qubits based on trapped ions. Different types of transmission lines mediating the vortex interaction are proposed.

Imaging Local Sources of Intermodulation in Superconducting Microwave Devices

This work presents new experimental results on low-temperature (LT) characterization of local rf properties of passive superconducting (SC) microwave devices using a novel Laser Scanning Microscope (LSM). In this technique, a modulated laser beam is focused onto and scanned over the surface of a resonant SC device to probe the spatial distribution of rf current. The highly localized photo-induced change of the kinetic inductance of the SC device produces both a shift of the resonant frequency f_0 and change of the quality factor Q. An image of these changes is recorded as the laser spot is scanned over the device. We present the first measurements of spatially resolved intermodulation response in a High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) co-planar waveguide resonator, opening up a new window into the local origins of nonlinearity in the HTS materials.

Effect of LaAlO$_3$ Surface Topography on RF Current Distribution in Superconducting Microwave Devices

A laser scanning microscope with a thermal spot size of about 4 $μ$m is used to measure a quantity proportional to the rf current density in an operating superconducting co-planar waveguide microwave resonator. The twinning of the LaAlO$_3$ substrate produces a meandering of the current at the edges due to irregularities in the wet etching of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ film associated with substrate twin domain blocks, and a ($\sim$ 20%) enhancement of the rf photoresponse at these locations. These irregularities are candidates for enhanced nonlinear response from the device. The effects of substrate twinning and the resulting edge features on the superconducting film are discussed and analyzed.

Observation of Stochastic Resonance in Percolative Josephson Media

Measurements of the electrical response of granular Sn-Ge thin films below the superconducting transition temperature are reported. The addition of an external noise to the magnetic field applied to the sample is found to increase the sample voltage response to a small externally applied ac signal. The gain coefficient for this signal and the signal-to-noise ratio display clear maxima at particular noise levels. We interpret these observations as a stochastic resonance in the percolative Josephson media which occurs close to the percolation threshold.

Observation of breather-like states in a single Josephson cell

We present experimental observation of broken-symmetry states in a superconducting loop with three Josephson junctions. These states are generic for discrete breathers in Josephson ladders. The existence region of the breather-like states is found to be in good accordance with the theoretical expectations. We observed three different resonant states in the current-voltage characteristics of the broken-symmetry state, as predicted by theory. The experimental dependence of the resonances on the external magnetic field is studied in detail.

Multi-photon transitions between energy levels in a current-biased Josephson tunnel junction

The escape of a small current-biased Josephson tunnel junction from the zero voltage state in the presence of weak microwave radiation is investigated experimentally at low temperatures. The measurements of the junction switching current distribution indicate the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase below a cross-over temperature of $T^{\star} \approx 280 \rm{mK}$. At temperatures below $T^{\star}$ we observe both single-photon and \emph{multi-photon} transitions between the junction energy levels by applying microwave radiation in the frequency range between $10 \rm{GHz}$ and $38 \rm{GHz}$ to the junction. These observations reflect the anharmonicity of the junction potential containing only a small number of levels.

High resolution measurements of the switching current in a Josephson tunnel junction: Thermal activation and macroscopic quantum tunneling

We have developed a scheme for a high resolution measurement of the switching current distribution of a current biased Josephson tunnel junction using a timing technique. The measurement setup is implemented such that the digital control and read-out electronics are optically decoupled from the analog bias electronics attached to the sample. We have successfully used this technique to measure the thermal activation and the macroscopic quantum tunneling of the phase in a small Josephson tunnel junction with a high experimental resolution. This technique may be employed to characterize current-biased Josephson tunnel junctions for applications in quantum information processing.

Incommensurate dynamics of resonant breathers in Josephson junction ladders

We present theoretical and experimental studies of resonant localized resistive states in a Josephson junction ladder. These complex breather states are obtained by tuning the breather frequency into the upper band of linear electromagnetic oscillations of the ladder. Their prominent feature is the appearance of resonant steps in the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. We have found the resonant breather-like states displaying incommensurate dynamics. Numerical simulations show that these incommensurate resonant breathers persist for very low values of damping. Qualitatively similar incommensurate breather states are observed in experiments performed with Nb-based Josephson ladders. We explain the appearance of these states with the help of resonance-induced hysteresis features in the I-V dependence.

AC induced damping of a fluxon in long Josephson junction

We present a theoretical and experimental study of Josephson vortex (fluxon) moving in the presence of spatially homogeneous dc and ac bias currents. By mapping this problem to the problem of calculating the current-voltage characteristic of a small Josephson junction, we derive the dependence of the average fluxon velocity on the dc bias current. In particular we find that the low frequency ac bias current results in an additional nonlinear damping of fluxon motion. Such ac induced damping crucially depends on the intrinsic damping parameter and increases drastically as this parameter is reduced. We find a good agreement of the analysis with both the direct numerical simulations and the experimentally measured current-voltage characteristics of a long annular Josephson junction with one trapped fluxon.

Resonances in one and two rows of triangular Josephson junction cells

We present an experimental and analytical study of resonances in the current-voltage characteristics of single and double row triangular Josephson arrays. The magnetic field dependences of the voltage positions of the resonances have been measured for various cell inductances and junction critical currents. In double row arrays, we have observed a peculiar resonance, whose voltage position decreases with magnetic field. We derive the spectrum of linear electromagnetic waves propagating in the arrays. In the double row array, the spectrum consists of many branches that differ by the behavior of the Josephson junctions transverse to the bias current direction. The measured magnetic field dependence of the resonance voltages is mapped to the linear mode spectrum and good agreement between experiments and model is found.

Bunching of fluxons by the Cherenkov radiation in Josephson multilayers

A single magnetic fluxon moving at a high velocity in a Josephson multilayer (e.g., high-temperature superconductor such as BSCCO) can emit electromagnetic waves (Cherenkov radiation), which leads to formation of novel stable dynamic states consisting of several bunched fluxons. We find such bunched states in numerical simulation in the simplest cases of two and three coupled junctions. At a given driving current, several different bunched states are stable and move at velocities that are higher than corresponding single-fluxon velocity. These and some of the more complex higher-order bunched states and transitions between them are investigated in detail.

Diversity of discrete breathers observed in a Josephson ladder

We generate and observe discrete rotobreathers in Josephson junction ladders with open boundaries. Rotobreathers are localized excitations that persist under the action of a spatially uniform force. We find a rich variety of stable dynamic states including pure symmetric, pure asymmetric, and mixed states. The parameter range where the discrete breathers are observed in our experiment is limited by retrapping due to dissipation.

Microwave spectroscopy on a double quantum dot with an on-chip Josephson oscillator

We present measurements on microwave spectroscopy on a double quantum dot with an on-chip microwave source. The quantum dots are realized in the two-dimensional electron gas of an AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure and are weakly coupled in series by a tunnelling barrier forming an 'ionic' molecular state. We employ a Josephson oscillator formed by a long Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb junction as a microwave source. We find photon-assisted tunnelling sidebands induced by the Josephson oscillator, and compare the results with those obtained using an externally operated microwave source.

Experimental Critical Current Patterns in Josephson Junction Ladders

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the magnetic field dependence of the critical current of Josephson junction ladders. At variance with the well-known case of a one-dimensional (1D) parallel array of Josephson junctions the magnetic field patterns display a single minimum even for very low values of the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}$. Experiments performed changing both the geometrical value of the inductance and the critical current of the junctions show a good agreement with numerical simulations. We argue that the observed magnetic field patterns are due to a peculiar mapping between the isotropic Josephson ladder and the 1D parallel array with the self-inductance parameter $β_{\rm L}^{\rm eff}=β_{\rm L}+2$.

Cherenkov radiation from fluxon in a stack of coupled long Josephson junctions

We present a systematic study of the Cherenkov radiation of Josephson plasma waves by fast moving fluxon in a stack of coupled long Josephson junctions for different fluxon modes. It is found that at some values of parameters current-voltage characteristic may exhibit a region of the back-bending on the fluxon step. In the opposite limit the emission of the Cherenkov radiation takes place. In the annular junctions of moderate length the interaction of the emitted waves with fluxon results in the novel resonances which emerge on the top of the fluxon step. We present more exact formulas which describe the position of such resonances taking into account difference between junction and non-linear corrections. The possibility of direct detection of the Cherenkov radiation in junctions of linear geometry is discussed.
