Broken symmetry of row switching in 2D Josephson junction arrays

We present an experimental and theoretical study of row switching in two-dimensional Josephson junction arrays. We have observed novel dynamic states with peculiar percolative patterns of the voltage drop inside the arrays. These states were directly visualized using laser scanning microscopy and manifested by fine branching in the current-voltage characteristics of the arrays. Numerical simulations show that such percolative patterns have an intrinsic origin and occur independently of positional disorder. We argue that the appearance of these dynamic states is due to the presence of various metastable superconducting states in arrays.

Annular Long Josephson Junctions in a Magnetic Field: Engineering and Probing the Fluxon Interaction Potential

The interaction of a Josephson fluxon with an external magnetic field-induced potential in a long Josephson junction is investigated experimentally. The thermal activation of the fluxon from a potential well is observed and experiments probing its predicted quantum properties are discussed. A method for engineering a magnetic double-well potential for a fluxon is proposed and the use of the coupled fluxon states for quantum computation is suggested.

Whispering Vortices

Experiments indicating the excitation of whispering gallery type electromagnetic modes by a vortex moving in an annular Josephson junction are reported. At relativistic velocities the Josephson vortex interacts with the modes of the superconducting stripline resonator giving rise to novel resonances on the current-voltage characteristic of the junction. The experimental data are in good agreement with analysis and numerical calculations based on the two-dimensional sine--Gordon model.

Maximum velocity of a fluxon in a stack of coupled Josephson junctions

Dynamics of a fluxon in a stack of inductively coupled long Josephson junctions is studied analytically and numerically. We demonstrate that the fluxon has a maximum velocity, which does not necessarily coincide with any of the characteristic Josephson plasma wave velocities. The maximum fluxon velocity is found by means of numerical simulations of the quasi-infinite system. Using the variational approximation, we propose a simple analytical formula for the dependence of the fluxon's maximum velocity on the coupling constant and on the distribution of critical currents in different layers. This analysis yields rather precise results in the limit of small dissipation. The simulations also show that nonzero dissipation additionally stabilizes the fluxon.

Observation of breathers in Josephson ladders

We report on the observation of spatially-localized excitations in a ladder of small Josephson junctions. The excitations are whirling states which persist under a spatially-homogeneous force due to the bias current. These states of the ladder are visualized using a low temperature scanning laser microscopy. We also compute breather solutions with high accuracy in corresponding model equations. The stability analysis of these solutions is used to interpret the measured patterns in the I-V characteristics.

Neighbor-junction state effect on the fluxon motion in a Josephson stack

We study experimentally and theoretically the influence of phase-whirling (resistive) state in one junction of a two-fold Josephson stack on the fluxon motion in the other junction. In experiment, we measure the fluxon velocity versus current in one junction as a function of the state (Meissner or resistive) of the neighboring junction. The analysis, made for the limit of high fluxon density, shows that the interaction with the resistive state results in an increase of the effective damping for the moving fluxon and, therefore, in reduction of its velocity. Numerical simulations confirm this result for various fluxon densities. The experimental data are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. In addition, the fluxon step measured experimentally has a rather peculiar structure with back and forth bending regions which is understood as a manifestation of the photon absorption in the neighboring junction.

Radiation linewidth of a long Josephson junction in the flux-flow regime

Theoretical model for the radiation linewidth in a multi-fluxon state of a long Josephson junction is presented. Starting from the perturbed sine-Gordon model with the temperature dependent noise term, we develop a collective coordinate approach which allows to calculate the finite radiation linewidth due to excitation of the internal degrees of freedom in the moving fluxon chain. At low fluxon density, the radiation linewidth is expected to be substantially larger than that of a lumped Josephson oscillator. With increasing the fluxon density, a crossover to a much smaller linewidth corresponding to the lumped oscillator limit is predicted.
