Current fluctuations near to the 2D superconductor-insulator quantum critical point

Systems near to quantum critical points show universal scaling in their response functions. We consider whether this scaling is reflected in their fluctuations; namely in current-noise. Naive scaling predicts low-temperature Johnson noise crossing over to noise power $\propto E^{z/(z+1)}$ at strong electric fields. We study this crossover in the metallic state at the 2d z=1 superconductor/insulator quantum critical point. Using a Boltzmann-Langevin approach within a 1/N-expansion, we show that the current noise obeys a scaling form $S_j=T Φ[T/T_{eff}(E)]$ with $T_{eff} \propto \sqrt{E}$. We recover Johnson noise in thermal equilibrium and $S_j \propto \sqrt{E}$ at strong electric fields. The suppression from free carrier shot noise is due to strong correlations at the critical point. We discuss its interpretation in terms of a diverging carrier charge $\propto 1/\sqrt{E}$ or as out-of-equilibrium Johnson noise with effective temperature $\propto \sqrt{E}$.

Theory of the helical spin crystal: a candidate for the partially ordered state of MnSi

MnSi is an itinerant magnet which at low temperatures develops a helical spin density wave. Under pressure it undergoes a transition into an unusual partially ordered state whose nature is debated. Here we propose that the helical spin crystal (the magnetic analog of a solid) is a useful starting point to understand partial order in MnSi. We consider different helical spin crystals and determine conditions under which they may be energetically favored. The most promising candidate has bcc structure and is reminiscent of the blue phase of liquid-crystals in that it has line-nodes of magnetization protected by symmetry. We introduce a Landau theory to study the properties of these states, in particular the effect of crystal anisotropy, magnetic field and disorder. These results compare favorably with existing data on MnSi from neutron scattering and magnetic field studies. Future experiments to test this scenario are also proposed.

Ordering near the percolation threshold in models of 2D interacting bosons with quenched dilution

Randomly diluted quantum boson and spin models in two dimensions combine the physics of classical percolation with the well-known dimensionality dependence of ordering in quantum lattice models. This combination is rather subtle for models that order in two dimensions but have no true order in one dimension, as the percolation cluster near threshold is a fractal of dimension between 1 and 2: two experimentally relevant examples are the O(2) quantum rotor and the Heisenberg antiferromagnet. We study two analytic descriptions of the O(2) quantum rotor near the percolation threshold. First a spin-wave expansion is shown to predict long-ranged order, but there are statistically rare points on the cluster that violate the standard assumptions of spin-wave theory. A real-space renormalization group (RSRG) approach is then used to understand how these rare points modify ordering of the O(2) rotor. A new class of fixed points of the RSRG equations for disordered 1D bosons is identified and shown to support the existence of long-range order on the percolation backbone in two dimensions. These results are relevant to experiments on bosons in optical lattices and superconducting arrays, and also (qualitatively) for the diluted Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

Supersolid Order from Disorder: Hard-Core Bosons on the Triangular Lattice

We study the interplay of Mott localization, geometric frustration, and superfluidity for hard-core bosons with nearest-neighbor repulsion on the triangular lattice. For this model at half-filling, we demonstrate that superfluidity survives for arbitrarily large repulsion, and that diagonal solid order emerges in the strongly correlated regime from an order-by-disorder mechanism. This is thus an unusual example of a stable supersolid phase of hard-core lattice bosons at a commensurate filling.
