A Vision of Hadronic Physics

We present a vision for the next decade of hadron physics in which the central question being addressed is how one might win new physical insight into the way hadronic systems work. The topics addressed include the relevance of model building, the role of spontaneously broken chiral symmetry, spectroscopy, form factors and physics in the deep inelastic regime.

Hadronic gamma-Z box corrections in M\oller scattering

The possibility of measuring the parity-violating asymmetry in M\oller scattering with sufficient accuracy to determine sin^2 theta_W to 0.1% offers a complementary path to the discovery of new physics to that followed at high energy colliders. We present a new calculation of the gamma-Z box contribution to parity-violating electron-proton scattering, which constitutes an important uncertainty in computing the background to this process. We show that while the gamma-Z correction grows rapidly with energy, it can be relatively well constrained by data from parity-violating inelastic scattering and parton distribution functions.

Momentum transfer dependence of the proton's electric and magnetic polarizabilities

The Q^2-dependence of the sum of the electric and magnetic polarizabilities of the proton is calculated over the range 0 \leq Q^2 \leq 6 GeV^2 using the generalized Baldin sum rule. Employing a parametrization of the F_1 structure function valid down to Q^2 = 0.06 GeV^2, the polarizabilities at the real photon point are found by extrapolating the results of finite Q^2 to Q^2 = 0 GeV^2. We determine the evolution over four-momentum transfer to be consistent with the Baldin sum rule using photoproduction data, obtaining α+ β= 13.7 \pm 0.7 \times 10^{-4}\, \text{fm}^3.

Chiral expansion of moments of quark distributions

We present formulae for the chiral extrapolation of spin-dependent and spin-independent moments of quark distributions of octet baryons, including loop corrections and counterterms to leading non-analytic order. This analysis allows for isospin breaking, and may be used for the chiral extrapolation of both (2+1)- and (1+1+1)-flavor lattice QCD results. An example of such an application is given, with the extrapolation formulae applied to recent (2 + 1)-flavor QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice results for the first spin-independent and first two spin-dependent Mellin moments.

Progress in resolving charge symmetry violation in nucleon structure

Recent work unambiguously resolves the level of charge symmetry violation in moments of parton distributions using 2+1-flavor lattice QCD. We introduce the methods used for that analysis by applying them to determine the strong contribution to the proton-neutron mass difference. We also summarize related work which reveals that the fraction of baryon spin which is carried by the quarks is in fact structure-dependent rather than universal across the baryon octet.

Strange magnetic form factor of nucleon in heavy baryon chiral effective approach at next to leading order

The strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon is studied in the heavy baryon chiral effective approach at next to leading order. The one loop contributions from kaon and intermediate octet and decuplet hyperons are included, using finite-range-regularization to deal with the ultra-violet divergences. Drawing on an established connection between quenched and full QCD, this model makes it possible to predict the strange magnetic form factor under the hypothesis that for a dipole regulator mass $Λ$ around 0.8 GeV, strangeness in the core is negligible. The strange magnetic form factor is found to be small and negative over a range of momentum transfer, while the strange magnetic moment is consistent with the best lattice QCD determinations.

Anatomy of relativistic pion loop corrections to the electromagnetic nucleon coupling

We present a relativistic formulation of pion loop corrections to the coupling of photons with nucleons on the light-front. Vertex and wave function renormalization constants are computed to lowest order in the pion field, including their nonanalytic behavior in the chiral limit, and studied numerically as a function of the ultraviolet cutoff. Particular care is taken to explicitly verify gauge invariance and Ward-Takahashi identity constraints to all orders in the m_pi expansion. The results are used to compute the chiral corrections to matrix elements of local operators, related to moments of deep-inelastic structure functions. Finally, comparisons of results for pseudovector and pseudoscalar coupling allows the resolution of a long-standing puzzle in the computation of pion cloud corrections to structure function moments.

Production of the H dibaryon via the (K^-,K^+) reaction on a $^{12}$C target

We study the production of the stable six-quark $H$ dibaryon via the $(K^-,K^+)$ reaction on a $^{12}$C target within a covariant effective Lagrangian model. The calculations are performed within a factorization approximation, in which the full production amplitude is written as a product of the amplitudes for the $K^- + p \to K^+ + Ξ^-$ and $Ξ^- + p \to H$ processes. The $K^+Ξ^-$ production vertex is described by excitation, propagation and decay of $Λ$ and $Σ$ resonance states in the initial collision of a $K^-$ meson with a target proton in the incident channel. The parameters of the resonance vertices are taken to be the same as those determined previously by describing the available data on total and differential cross sections for the $p(K^-, K^+)Ξ^-$ reaction within a similar model. The $Ξ^- + p \to H$ fusion process is treated within a quark model where the $H$ dibaryon is considered as a stable particle. For the $K^+$ meson angle fixed at 0$^o$, the $H$ production cross-section is found to be about 2.9 $μb/sr$ for $H$ mass just below the $ΛΛ$ threshold at a $K^-$ beam momentum of 1.67 GeV/c. This is an order of magnitude larger than the value for this quantity reported earlier in calculations performed on a $^3$He target using a different model for the cascade hyperon production. We have also calculated the beam momentum dependence of the $H$ production cross section and the energy spectrum of the emitted $K^+$ meson.

Updated Analysis of the Mass of the H Dibaryon from Lattice QCD

Recent lattice QCD calculations from the HAL and NPLQCD Collaborations have reported evidence for the existence of a bound state with strangeness -2 and baryon number 2 at quark masses somewhat higher than the physical values. A controlled chiral extrapolation of these lattice results to the physical point suggested that the state, identified with the famed H dibaryon, is most likely slightly unbound (by 13 $\pm$ 14 MeV) with respect to the $Λ--Λ$ threshold. We report the results of an updated analysis which finds the H unbound by 26 $\pm$ 11 MeV. Apart from the insight it would give us into how QCD is realized in Nature, the H is of great interest because of its potential implications for the equation of state of dense matter and studies of neutron stars. It may also explain the enhancement above the $Λ--Λ$ threshold already reported experimentally. It is clearly of great importance that the latter be pursued in experiments at the new J-PARC facility.

Constrained gamma-Z interference corrections to parity-violating electron scattering

We present a comprehensive analysis of gamma-Z interference corrections to the weak charge of the proton measured in parity-violating electron scattering, including a survey of existing models and a critical analysis of their uncertainties. Constraints from parton distributions in the deep-inelastic region, together with new data on parity-violating electron scattering in the resonance region, result in significantly smaller uncertainties on the corrections compared to previous estimates. At the kinematics of the Qweak experiment, we determine the gamma-Z box correction to be ReBox^V_{gamma-Z} = (5.57 +- 0.36) x 10^{-3}. The new constraints also allow precise predictions to be made for parity-violating deep-inelastic asymmetries on the deuteron.

Structure and Coulomb dissociation of 23O within the quark-meson coupling model

We study the ground-state structure of nuclei in the vicinity of the one-neutron dripline within the latest version of the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model with a particular emphasis on 23O. For this nucleus the model predicts a [22O(0+) + n (2s_{1/2})] configuration for its ground state, with a one neutron separation energy in close agreement with the corresponding experimental value. The wave function describing the valence neutron-core relative motion was then used to calculate the Coulomb dissociation of 23O on a lead target at a beam energy of 422 MeV/nucleon. The experimental neutron-core relative energy spectrum and the total one-neutron removal cross sections are well described by the calculations. The widths of the longitudinal momentum distributions of the 22O fragment are found to be broad, which do not support the formation of a neutron halo in this nucleus.

A finite-volume matrix Hamiltonian model for a Delta -> nucleon-pion system

A matrix Hamiltonian model is developed to address the finite-volume effects appearing in studies of baryon resonances in lattice QCD. The Hamiltonian model includes interaction terms in a transparent way, and can be readily generalized to address multi-channel problems. The eigenvalue equation of the model is exactly solvable, and can be matched onto chiral effective field theory. The model is investigated in the case of Delta -> nucleon-pion scattering. A robust method for determining the resonance parameters from lattice QCD is developed. It involves constraining the free parameters of the model based on the lattice spectrum in question. The method is tested in the context of a set of pseudodata, and a picture of the model-dependence is obtained by examining a variety of regularization schemes in the model. A comparison is made with the Luescher method, and it is found that the matrix Hamiltonian method is equally robust. Both methods are tested in a more realistic scenario, where a background interaction corresponding to direct nucleon-pion scattering is incorporated into the pseudodata. The resulting extraction of the resonance parameters associated with the Delta baryon resonance provides evidence that an effective field theory style of approach yields a successful realization of finite-volume effects in the context of baryon resonances.

Charge symmetry breaking from a chiral extrapolation of moments of quark distribution functions

We present a determination, from lattice QCD, of charge symmetry violation in the spin- independent and spin-dependent parton distribution functions of the nucleon. This is done by chirally extrapolating recent QCDSF/UKQCD Collaboration lattice simulations of the first several Mellin moments of the parton distribution functions of octet baryons to the physical point. We find small chiral corrections for the polarized moments, while the corrections are quantitatively significant in the unpolarized case.

Pion momentum distributions in the nucleon in chiral effective theory

We compute the light-cone momentum distributions of pions in the nucleon in chiral effective theory using both pseudovector and pseudoscalar pion-nucleon couplings. For the pseudovector coupling we identify δ-function contributions associated with end-point singularities arising from the pion-nucleon rainbow diagrams, as well as from pion bubble and tadpole diagrams which are not present in the pseudoscalar model. Gauge invariance is demonstrated, to all orders in the pion mass, with the inclusion of Kroll-Ruderman couplings involving operator insertions at the πNN vertex. The results pave the way for phenomenological applications of pion cloud models that are manifestly consistent with the chiral symmetry properties of QCD.

Neutron Star Properties with Hyperons

In the light of the recent discovery of a neutron star with a mass accurately determined to be almost two solar masses, it has been suggested that hyperons cannot play a role in the equation of state of dense matter in $β$-equilibrium. We re-examine this issue in the most recent development of the quark-meson coupling model. Within a relativistic Hartree-Fock approach and including the full tensor structure at the vector-meson-baryon vertices, we find that not only must hyperons appear in matter at the densities relevant to such a massive star but that the maximum mass predicted is completely consistent with the observation.

Octet Spin Fractions and the Proton Spin Problem

The relatively small fraction of the spin of the proton carried by its quarks presents a major challenge to our understanding of the strong interaction. Traditional efforts to explore this problem have involved new and imaginative experiments and QCD based studies of the nucleon. We propose a new approach to the problem which exploits recent advances in lattice QCD. In particular, we extract values for the spin carried by the quarks in other members of the baryon octet in order to see whether the suppression observed for the proton is a general property or depends significantly on the baryon structure. We compare these results with the values for the spin fractions calculated within a model that includes the effects of confinement, relativity, gluon exchange currents and the meson cloud required by chiral symmetry, finding a very satisfactory level of agreement given the precision currently attainable.

Scale setting, sigma terms and the Feynman-Hellman theorem

The authors recently presented new values for the octet baryon sigma terms. These were extracted using the Feynman-Hellman theorem from a chiral perturbation theory fit to octet baryon mass data from the PACS-CS collaboration. Of particular interest is the precise determination of the strangeness sigma term $σ_s = 21 \pm 6$ MeV. In this work, we elaborate on the critical effect which the choice of scale setting has on this value. We discuss the prospect that the comparison of direct and 'spectrum' determinations of the sigma terms from the lattice can provide insight not only into scale setting on the lattice, but into QCD itself.

Strong contribution to octet baryon mass splittings

We calculate the $m_d-m_u$ contribution to the mass splittings in baryonic isospin multiplets using SU(3) chiral perturbation theory and lattice QCD. Fitting isospin-averaged perturbation theory functions to PACS-CS and QCDSF-UKQCD Collaboration lattice simulations of octet baryon masses, and using the physical light quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d$ as input, allows $M_n-M_p$, $M_{Σ^-}-M_{Σ^+}$ and $M_{Ξ^-}-M_{Ξ^0}$ to be evaluated from the full SU(3) theory. The resulting values for each mass splitting are consistent with the experimental values after allowing for electromagnetic corrections. In the case of the nucleon, we find $M_n-M_p= 2.9 \pm 0.4 \textrm{MeV}$, with the dominant uncertainty arising from the error in $m_u/m_d$.
