Optical Characterization of the BICEP3 CMB Polarimeter at the South Pole

BICEP3 is a small-aperture refracting cosmic microwave background (CMB) telescope designed to make sensitive polarization maps in pursuit of a potential B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. It is the latest in the BICEP/Keck Array series of CMB experiments at the South Pole, which has provided the most stringent constraints on inflation to date. For the 2016 observing season, BICEP3 was outfitted with a full suite of 2400 optically coupled detectors operating at 95 GHz. In these proceedings we report on the far field beam performance using calibration data taken during the 2015-2016 summer deployment season in situ with a thermal chopped source. We generate high-fidelity per-detector beam maps, show the array-averaged beam profile, and characterize the differential beam response between co-located, orthogonally polarized detectors which contributes to the leading instrumental systematic in pair differencing experiments. We find that the levels of differential pointing, beamwidth, and ellipticity are similar to or lower than those measured for BICEP2 and Keck Array. The magnitude and distribution of BICEP3's differential beam mismatch - and the level to which temperature-to-polarization leakage may be marginalized over or subtracted in analysis - will inform the design of next-generation CMB experiments with many thousands of detectors.

Measurement of nuclear effects in neutrino interactions with minimal dependence on neutrino energy

We present a phenomenological study of nuclear effects in neutrino charged-current interactions, using transverse kinematic imbalances in exclusive measurements. Novel observables with minimal dependence on neutrino energy are proposed to study quasielastic scattering, and especially resonance production. They should be able to provide direct constraints on nuclear effects in neutrino- and antineutrino-nucleus interactions.

Entanglement and manipulation of the magnetic and spin-orbit order in multiferroic Rashba semiconductors

The interplay between electronic eigenstates, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom, combined with fundamental breaking of symmetries is currently one of the most exciting fields of research. Multiferroics such as (GeMn)Te fulfill these requirements providing unusual physical properties due to the coexistence and coupling between ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order in one and the same system. Here we show that multiferroic (GeMn)Te inherits from its parent ferroelectric α-GeTe compound a giant Rashba splitting of three-dimensional bulk states which competes with the Zeeman spin splitting induced by the magnetic exchange interactions. The collinear alignment of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic polarization leads to an opening of a tunable Zeeman gap of up to 100 meV around the Dirac point of the Rashba bands, coupled with a change in spin texture by entanglement of magnetic and spin-orbit order. Through applications of magnetic fields, we demonstrate manipulation of spin- texture by spin resolved photoemission experiments, which is also expected for electric fields based on the multiferroic coupling. The control of spin helicity of the bands and its locking to ferromagnetic and ferroelectric order opens fascinating new avenues for highly multifunctional multiferroic Rashba devices suited for reprogrammable logic and/or nonvolatile memory applications.

Experimental Validation of a Microscopic Ellipsoidal Particle Model Immersed in Fluid Flow

A simulation of ellipsoidal particles inside a fluid flow is presented and validated from our own lab size experiments where data has been recorded using a camera set-up and post-processing of the pictures. The model is based on Jeffery's equation, where the orientation and position of the particles are influenced by the surrounding fluid. Additionally, particle-particle interaction and particle-wall interaction are taken into account.

Polarization-transfer measurement to a large-virtuality bound proton in the deuteron

Possible differences between free and bound protons may be observed in the ratio of polarization-transfer components, $P'_x/P'_z$. We report the measurement of $P'_x/P'_z$, in the $^2\textrm{H}(\vec{e},e^{\prime}\vec{p})n$ reaction at low and high missing momenta. Observed increasing deviation of $P'_x/P'_z$ from that of a free proton as a function of the virtuality, similar to that observed in \hefour, indicates that the effect in nuclei is due to the virtuality of the knock-out proton and not due to the average nuclear density. The measured differences from calculations assuming free-proton form factors ($\sim10\%$), may indicate in-medium modifications.

Reconstruction of Energy Spectra of Neutrino Beams Independent of Nuclear Effects

We propose a new technique which enables an event-by-event selection of neutrino-hydrogen interactions in multi-nuclear targets and thereby allows application of hydrogen as targets in experiments with neutrino beams without involving cryogenics or high pressure hydrogen gas. This technique could significantly improve the reconstruction of the neutrino energy spectra. Since it allows a separation between hydrogen and the accompanying nuclei, this technique also enables us to measure nuclear effects in neutrino interactions directly.

Observation of Lambda H-4 hyperhydrogen by decay-pion spectroscopy in electron scattering

At the Mainz Microtron MAMI, the first high-resolution pion spectroscopy from decays of strange systems was performed by electron scattering off a Be-9 target in order to study the ground-state masses of Lambda-hypernuclei. Positively charged kaons were detected by a short-orbit spectrometer with a broad momentum acceptance at zero degree forward angles with respect to the beam, efficiently tagging the production of strangeness in the target nucleus. In coincidence, negatively charged decay-pions were detected by two independent high-resolution spectrometers. About 10^3 pionic weak decays of hyperfragments and hyperons were observed. The pion momentum distribution shows a monochromatic peak at p_pi ~ 133 MeV/c, corresponding to the unique signature for the two-body decay of hyperhydrogen Lambda H-4 -> He-4 + pi-, stopped inside the target. Its binding energy was determined to be B_Lambda = 2.12 +- 0.01 (stat.) +- 0.09 (syst.) MeV with respect to the H-3 + Lambda mass.

Antenna-coupled TES bolometers used in BICEP2, Keck array, and SPIDER

We have developed antenna-coupled transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers for a wide range of cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarimetry experiments, including BICEP2, Keck Array, and the balloon borne SPIDER. These detectors have reached maturity and this paper reports on their design principles, overall performance, and key challenges associated with design and production. Our detector arrays repeatedly produce spectral bands with 20%-30% bandwidth at 95, 150, or 220~GHz. The integrated antenna arrays synthesize symmetric co-aligned beams with controlled side-lobe levels. Cross-polarized response on boresight is typically ~0.5%, consistent with cross-talk in our multiplexed readout system. End-to-end optical efficiencies in our cameras are routinely 35% or higher, with per detector sensitivities of NET~300 uKrts. Thanks to the scalability of this design, we have deployed 2560 detectors as 1280 matched pairs in Keck Array with a combined instantaneous sensitivity of ~9 uKrts, as measured directly from CMB maps in the 2013 season. Similar arrays have recently flown in the SPIDER instrument, and development of this technology is ongoing.

Integral representations combining ladders and crossed-ladders

We use the worldline formalism to derive integral representations for three classes of amplitudes in scalar field theory: (i) the scalar propagator exchanging N momenta with a scalar background field (ii) the "half-ladder" with N rungs in x - space (iii) the four-point ladder with N rungs in x - space as well as in (off-shell) momentum space. In each case we give a compact expression combining the N! Feynman diagrams contributing to the amplitude. As our main application, we reconsider the well-known case of two massive scalars interacting through the exchange of a massless scalar. Applying asymptotic estimates and a saddle-point approximation to the N-rung ladder plus crossed ladder diagrams, we derive a semi-analytic approximation formula for the lowest bound state mass in this model.

Search for light massive gauge bosons as an explanation of the $(g-2)_μ$ anomaly at MAMI

A massive, but light abelian U(1) gauge boson is a well motivated possible signature of physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In this paper, the search for the signal of such a U(1) gauge boson in electron-positron pair-production at the spectrometer setup of the A1 Collaboration at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) is described. Exclusion limits in the mass range of 40 MeV up to 300 MeV with a sensitivity in the mixing parameter of down to $ε^2 = 8\times 10^{-7}$ are presented. A large fraction of the parameter space has been excluded where the discrepancy of the measured anomalous magnetic moment of the muon with theory might be explained by an additional U(1) gauge boson.

Dependence of the thermoluminescent high-temperature ratio (HTR) of LiF:Mg,Ti detectors on proton energy and dose

The high-temperature ratio (HTR) is a parameter quantifying changes of the shape of the high-temperature part of the LiF:Mg,Ti glow-curve after exposure to densely ionizing radiation. It was introduced in order to estimate the effective LET of an unknown radiation field and to correct the decreased relative TL efficiency for high Linear Energy Transfer (LET) radiation. In the present work the dependence of HTR on proton energy (14.5 to 58 MeV) and dose (0.5 to 30 Gy) was investigated. All measured HTR values were at the level of 1.2 or higher, therefore significantly different from the respective value for gamma rays (HTR is equal to 1), but HTR was found to be insensitive to changes of proton energy above 20 MeV. As a result the relationship between HTR and relative TL efficiency is not unequivocal. The HTR was found to be dependent on absorbed dose even for the lowest studied doses.

A search for flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions by MINOS

We report new constraints on flavor-changing non-standard neutrino interactions (NSI) using data from the MINOS experiment. We analyzed a combined set of beam neutrino and antineutrino data, and found no evidence for deviations from standard neutrino mixing. The observed energy spectra constrain the NSI parameter to the range $-0.20 < \varepsilon_{μτ} < 0.07\;\text{(90% C.L.)}$

The T2K ND280 Off-Axis Pi-Zero Detector

The Pi-Zero detector (PØD) is one of the subdetectors that makes up the off-axis near detector for the Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) long baseline neutrino experiment. The primary goal for the PØD is to measure the relevant cross sections for neutrino interactions that generate pi-zero's, especially the cross section for neutral current pi-zero interactions, which are one of the dominant sources of background to the electron neutrino appearance signal in T2K. The PØD is composed of layers of plastic scintillator alternating with water bags and brass sheets or lead sheets and is one of the first detectors to use Multi-Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs) on a large scale.

The T2K Side Muon Range Detector

The T2K experiment is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment aiming to observe the appearance of ν e in a νμ beam. The νμ beam is produced at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), observed with the 295 km distant Super- Kamiokande Detector and monitored by a suite of near detectors at 280m from the proton target. The near detectors include a magnetized off-axis detector (ND280) which measures the un-oscillated neutrino flux and neutrino cross sections. The present paper describes the outermost component of ND280 which is a side muon range detector (SMRD) composed of scintillation counters with embedded wavelength shifting fibers and Multi-Pixel Photon Counter read-out. The components, performance and response of the SMRD are presented.

Combining Neutrino Oscillation Experiments with the Feldman-Cousins Method

In this article we describe how two or more experimental results can be combined within the procedure of Feldman and Cousins, to provide combined confidence limits on the physical parameters of interest. We demonstrate the technique by combining the recent electron neutrino appearance results from T2K and MINOS. Our best fit point is sin^{2}2θ_{13} = 0.08 (0.11) and δ= 1.1 (2.0) π; in addition we exclude sin^{2}2θ_{13}=0 at 2.7 σ(2.8 σ) for the normal (inverted) neutrino mass hierarchy.

Equal-time two-point correlation functions in Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory

We apply a functional perturbative approach to the calculation of the equal-time two-point correlation functions and the potential between static color charges to one-loop order in Coulomb gauge Yang-Mills theory. The functional approach proceeds through a solution of the Schroedinger equation for the vacuum wave functional to order g^2 and derives the equal-time correlation functions from a functional integral representation via new diagrammatic rules. We show that the results coincide with those obtained from the usual Lagrangian functional integral approach, extract the beta function, and determine the anomalous dimensions of the equal-time gluon and ghost two-point functions and the static potential under the assumption of multiplicative renormalizability to all orders.

Comparisons of the MINOS Near and Far Detector Readout Systems at a Test Beam

MINOS is a long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment that uses two detectors separated by 734 km. The readout systems used for the two detectors are different and have to be independently calibrated. To verify and make a direct comparison of the calibrated response of the two readout systems, test beam data were acquired using a smaller calibration detector. This detector was simultaneously instrumented with both readout systems and exposed to the CERN PS T7 test beam. Differences in the calibrated response of the two systems are shown to arise from differences in response non-linearity, photomultiplier crosstalk, and threshold effects at the few percent level. These differences are reproduced by the Monte Carlo (MC) simulation to better than 1% and a scheme that corrects for these differences by calibrating the MC to match the data in each detector separately is presented. The overall difference in calorimetric response between the two readout systems is shown to be consistent with zero to a precision of 1.3% in data and 0.3% in MC with no significant energy dependence.

Functional approaches to infrared Yang-Mills theory in the Coulomb gauge

We present the current status of ongoing efforts to use functional methods, Dyson-Schwinger equations and functional renormalization group equations, for the description of the infrared regime of nonabelian (pure) gauge theories in the Coulomb gauge. In particular, we present a new determination of the color-Coulomb potential with the help of the functional renormalization group that results in an almost linearly rising potential between static color charges at large spatial distances.
