Non-perturbative renormalization of quark bilinear operators and B_K using domain wall fermions

We present a calculation of the renormalization coefficients of the quark bilinear operators and the K-Kbar mixing parameter B_K. The coefficients relating the bare lattice operators to those in the RI/MOM scheme are computed non-perturbatively and then matched perturbatively to the MSbar scheme. The coefficients are calculated on the RBC/UKQCD 2+1 flavor dynamical lattice configurations. Specifically we use a 16^3 x 32 lattice volume, the Iwasaki gauge action at beta=2.13 and domain wall fermions with L_s=16.

2+1 flavor domain wall QCD on a (2 fm)^3 lattice: light meson spectroscopy with Ls = 16

We present results for light meson masses and pseudoscalar decay constants from the first of a series of lattice calculations with 2+1 dynamical flavors of domain wall fermions and the Iwasaki gauge action. The work reported here was done at a fixed lattice spacing of about 0.12 fm on a 16^3\times32 lattice, which amounts to a spatial volume of (2 fm)^3 in physical units. The number of sites in the fifth dimension is 16, which gives m_{res} = 0.00308(4) in these simulations. Three values of input light sea quark masses, m_l^{sea} \approx 0.85 m_s, 0.59 m_s and 0.33 m_s were used to allow for extrapolations to the physical light quark limit, whilst the heavier sea quark mass was fixed to approximately the physical strange quark mass m_s. The exact rational hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm was used to evaluate the fractional powers of the fermion determinants in the ensemble generation. We have found that f_π= 127(4) MeV, f_K = 157(5) MeV and f_K/f_π= 1.24(2), where the errors are statistical only, which are in good agreement with the experimental values.

Neutral kaon mixing from 2+1 flavor Domain Wall QCD

We present the first results for neutral kaon mixing using 2+1 flavors of domain wall fermions. A new approach is used to extrapolate to the physical up and down quark masses from our numerical studies with pion masses in the range 240 -- 420 MeV; only $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R$ chiral symmetry is assumed and the kaon is not assumed to be light. Our main result is $B_K^{\bar{\rm MS}}(2 \mathrm{GeV}) = 0.524(10)(28)$ where the first error is statistical and the second incorporates estimates for all systematic errors.

Direct current voltage induced by microwave signal in a ferromagnetic wire

Experimental results of rectification of a constant wave radio frequency (RF) current flowing in a single-layered ferromagnetic wire are presented. We show that a detailed external magnetic field dependence of the RF current induced a direct-current voltage spectrum. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed in a term of the spin transfer torque, and the rectification is closely related to resonant spin wave excitation with the assistant of the spin-polarized RF current. The micromagnetic simulation taking into account the spin transfer torque provides strong evidence which supports the generation of spin wave excitation by the RF current.

Magnetic fingerprint in a ferromagnetic wire: Spin torque diode effect and induction of the DC voltage spectrum inherent in the wire under application for RF current

We report the rectifying effect of a constant-wave radio frequency (RF) current by a magnetic domain wall (DW) on a single-layered ferromagnetic wire. A direct-current (DC) voltage is generated by the spin torque diode effect, which is a consequence of magnetoresistance oscillation due to the resonant spin wave excitation induced by the spin-polarized RF current. The DC voltage spectrum strongly depends on the internal spin structure in the DW, which corresponds to the magnetic fingerprint of the spin structure in the ferromagnetic wire.

Rectification of radio frequency current in ferromagnetic nanowire

We report the rectification of a constant wave radio frequency (RF) current by using a single-layer magnetic nanowire; a direct-current voltage is resonantly generated when the RF current flows through the nanowire. The mechanism of the rectification is discussed in terms of the spin torque diode effect reported for magnetic tunnel junction devices and the rectification is shown to be direct attributable to resonant spin wave excitation by the RF current.

First results from 2+1-Flavor Domain Wall QCD: Mass Spectrum, Topology Change and Chiral Symmetry with $L_s=8$

We present results for the static interquark potential, light meson and baryon masses, and light pseudoscalar meson decay constants obtained from simulations of domain wall QCD with one dynamical flavour approximating the $s$ quark, and two degenerate dynamical flavours with input bare masses ranging from $m_s$ to $m_s/4$ approximating the $u$ and $d$ quarks. We compare these quantities obtained using the Iwasaki and DBW2 improved gauge actions, and actions with larger rectangle coefficients, on $16^3\times32$ lattices. We seek parameter values at which both the chiral symmetry breaking residual mass due to the finite lattice extent in the fifth dimension and the Monte Carlo time history for topological charge are acceptable for this set of quark masses at lattice spacings above 0.1 fm. We find that the Iwasaki gauge action is best, demonstrating the feasibility of using QCDOC to generate ensembles which are good representations of the QCD path integral on lattices of up to 3 fm in spatial extent with lattice spacings in the range 0.09-0.13 fm. Despite large residual masses and a limited number of sea quark mass values with which to perform chiral extrapolations, our results for light hadronic physics scale and agree with experimental measurements within our statistical uncertainties.

Minority Spin Condensate in Spin-Polarized Superfluid $^3$He-A$_1$ Phase

The spin-polarized superfluid $^3$He A$_1$ phase, which forms below 3 mK in external magnetic field, serves as a material in which theoretical notions of fundamental magnetic processes and macroscopic quantum spin phenomena may be tested. Conventionally, the superfluid component of the A$_1$ phase is understood to contain only the majority spin condensate having energetically-favoured paired spins directed along the external field and no minority spin condensate having paired spins in the opposite direction. We have developed a novel mechanical spin density detector to measure the spin relaxation in the A$_1$ phase as functions of temperature, pressure and magnetic field. The mechanical spin detector is based in principle on the unique magnetic fountain effect occurring only in the A$_1$ phase (occurring between two transition temperatures, T$_{c1}$ and T$_{c2}$). Unexpectedly, the spin relaxation rate increases rapidly as the temperature is decreased towards T$_{c2}$. Our measurements, together with Leggett-Takagi and Monien-Tewordt theories, demonstrate that a minute presence of minority spin pairs is responsible for the unexpected spin relaxation phenomena in A$_1$ phase.

Light meson masses and non-perturbative renormalisation in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD

We present results for the light meson masses, the bare strange quark mass and preliminary non-perturbative renormalisation of B_K in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD. The ensembles used were generated with the Iwasaki gauge action and have a volume of 16^3 x 32 with a fifth dimension size of 16 and an inverse lattice spacing of 1.6 GeV. These ensembles have u and d masses as low as one quarter of the strange quark mass. All data were generated jointly by the UKQCD and RBC collaborations on QCDOC machines.

Reduction of threshold current density for current-driven domain wall motion by shape control

We investigated the aspect ratio (thickness/width) dependence of the threshold current density required for the current-driven domain wall (DW) motion for the Ni81Fe19 nanowires. It has been shown theoretically that the threshold current density is proportional to the product of the hard-axis magnetic anisotropy Kperp and the DW width lamda. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 086601 (2004).) We show experimentally that Kperp can be controlled by the magnetic shape anisotropy in the case of the Ni81Fe19 nanowires, and that the threshold current density increases with an increase of Kperp*l. We succeeded to reduce the threshold current density by half by the shape control.

Fast polarimetry system for the application to spin quantum non-demolition measurement

We report the development of a fast pulse polarimeter for the application to quantum non-demolition measurement of atomic spin (Spin QND). The developed system was tunable to the atomic resonance of ytterbium atom and has narrow laser linewidth suitable for spin QND. Using the developed polarimeter, we successfully demonstrated the measurement of the vacuum noise, with 10^6 to 10^7 photon number per pulse.

Light meson masses and decay constants in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD

We present results for light meson masses and psedoscalar meson decay constants in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD with the DBW2 and Iwasaki gauge actions, using lattices with linear sizes in the range 1.6 to 2.2fm and $u$ and $d$ quark masses as low as one quarter of the strange quark mass. All data were generated on the QCDOC machines at the University of Edinburgh and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Despite large residual masses and a limited number of sea quark mass values with which to perform chiral extrapolations, our results agree with experiment and scale within errors.

Baryons in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD

We present results for some of the light baryon masses and their excited states in 2+1 flavour domain wall QCD. We considered several lattice spacings, with the DBW2 and Iwasaki gauge actions and different sea quark masses on a volume of $16^3\times32$ and a fifth dimension of size 8. All data were generated on the QCDOC machines. Despite large residual massses and a limited number of sea quark mass values with which to perform chiral extrapolations, our results are in reasonable agreement with experiment and scale within errors. Finite size effects on most ensembles appear to be small.

Effect of Joule heating in current-driven domain wall motion

It was found that high current density needed for the current-driven domain wall motion results in the Joule heating of the sample. The sample temperature, when the current-driven domain wall motion occurred, was estimated by measuring the sample resistance during the application of a pulsed-current. The sample temperature was 750 K for the threshold current density of 6.7 x 10^11 A/m2 in a 10 nm-thick Ni81Fe19 wire with a width of 240 nm. The temperature was raised to 830 K for the current density of 7.5 x 10^11 A/m2, which is very close to the Curie temperature of bulk Ni81Fe19. When the current density exceeded 7.5 x 10^11 A/m2, an appearance of a multi-domain structure in the wire was observed by magnetic force microscopy, suggesting that the sample temperature exceeded the Curie temperature.

Conformal boundary states in SU(2)_1/G

We construct boundary states in a particular c=1 conformal field theory, the SU(2)_1/G orbifold with G a binary finite subgroup of SU(2). These states preserve the conformal symmetry, at least, but break rational symmetries of the SU(2)_1/G orbifold in general.

Hardware and software status of QCDOC

QCDOC is a massively parallel supercomputer whose processing nodes are based on an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). This ASIC was custom-designed so that crucial lattice QCD kernels achieve an overall sustained performance of 50% on machines with several 10,000 nodes. This strong scalability, together with low power consumption and a price/performance ratio of $1 per sustained MFlops, enable QCDOC to attack the most demanding lattice QCD problems. The first ASICs became available in June of 2003, and the testing performed so far has shown all systems functioning according to specification. We review the hardware and software status of QCDOC and present performance figures obtained in real hardware as well as in simulation.

Search for neutrinoless tau decays tau -> 3l and tau -> l K0S

Neutrinoless tau-lepton decays into either three leptons (tau- -> l1- l2 l3) or one lepton and one K0S meson(tau- -> l- K0S) where lepton l means either an electron or muon, have been searched for using 48.6 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. No evidence for candidate decays are found in any channel. Therefore we set 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fraction for 8 different decay modes. These limits are more stringent than those set previously and reach to the 10^{-7} level.
