Status of and performance estimates for QCDOC

QCDOC is a supercomputer designed for high scalability at a low cost per node. We discuss the status of the project and provide performance estimates for large machines obtained from cycle accurate simulation of the QCDOC ASIC.

Status of the QCDOC project

A status report is given of the QCDOC project, a massively parallel computer optimized for lattice QCD using system-on-a-chip technology. We describe several of the hardware and software features unique to the QCDOC architecture and present performance figures obtained from simulating the current VHDL design of the QCDOC chip with single-cycle accuracy.

Genetic Algorithm for SU(2) Gauge Theory on a 2-dimensional Lattice

An algorithm is proposed for the simulation of pure SU(N) lattice gauge theories based on Genetic Algorithms(GAs). We apply GAs to SU(2) pure gauge theory on a 2 dimensional lattice and show the results, the action per plaquette and Wilson loops, are consistent with those by Metropolis method(MP)s and Heatbath method(HB)s. Thermalization speed of GAs is especially faster than the simple MPs.

A Search for Very High Energy Neutrinos from Active Galactic Nuclei

We report the results of a search for neutrino-induced particle cascades using a deep ocean water Cherenkov detector. The effective mass of the detector, a string of seven 40 cm diameter photomultipliers at 5.2 m spacing, is found through simulation analysis to be surprisingly large: greater than 1 megaton of water at incident neutrino energies of 1 PeV. We find no evidence for neutrino-induced cascades in 18.6 hours of observation. Although the limit implied by this observation is the strongest yet for predictions of active galatic nuclei (AGN) neutrinos at energies above 100 TeV, perhaps the more intriguing result is that the power of these techniques can be exploited to test these AGN models in a relatively short time.
