Parity violating magnetization at neutrino pair emission using trivalent lanthanoid ions

A new detection method using magnetization generated at triggered radiative emission of neutrino pairs (RENP), $ |e \rangle \rightarrow | g \rangle + γ+ \sum_{ij}ν_i \barν_j $ (atomic de-transition from state $|e \rangle $ to state $|g \rangle$ emitting sum of neutrino pairs $\sum_{ij}ν_i\barν_j$ accompanied by a photon $γ$), is investigated in order to determine unknown neutrino properties; absolute neutrino masses of $ν_i$ and Majorana/Dirac distinction. Magnetization associated with RENP events has parity violating component intrinsic to weak interaction enforced by crystal field effect in solids, and greatly helps background rejection of quantum electrodynamic (QED) origin even when these backgrounds are amplified. In proposed experiments we prepare a coherently excited body of trivalent lanthanoid ions, Er$^{3+}$ (a best candidate ion so far found), doped in a transparent dielectric crystal. The magnetic moment $μ\langle \vec{S}\cdot\vec{k} \rangle/k $ arising from generated electron spin $\vec{S}$ parallel to trigger photon direction $\vec{k}/k$ is parity odd, and is absent in QED processes. The generated magnetic field of order nano gauss is stored in crystals long after pair emission event till spin relaxation time. An improved calculation method of coherent rate and angular distribution of magnetization is developed in order to incorporate finite size effect of crystal target beyond the infinite size limit in previous calculations.

Estimation of radiative half-life of $^{229m}$Th by half-life measurement of other nuclear excited states in $^{229}$Th

We perform coincidence measurements between $α$ particles and $γ$ rays from a $^{233}$U source to determine the half-lives of the excited state in a $^{229}$Th nucleus. We first prove that the half-lives of 42.43- and 164.53-keV states are consistent with literature values, whereas that of the 97.14-keV state (93(7) ps) deviates from a previously measured value (147(12) ps). The half-lives of 71.83- and 163.25-keV states are determined for the first time. Based on the obtained half-lives and the Alaga rule, we estimate the radiative half-life of the low-energy isomeric state ($^{229m}$Th) to be $5.0(11)\times10^{3}$ s, which is one of the key parameters for the frequency standard based on $^{229}$Th.

Quantum dots as a probe of fundamental physics: Deviation from exponential decay law

We explore a possibility of measuring deviation from the exponential decay law in pure quantum systems. The power law behavior at late times of decay time profile is predicted in quantum mechanics, and has been experimentally attempted to detect, but with failures except a claim in an open system. It is found that electron tunneling from resonance state confined in man-made atoms, quantum dots, has a good chance of detecting the deviation and testing theoretical predictions. How initial unstable state is prepared influences greatly the time profile of decay law, and this can be used to set the onset time of the power law at earlier times. Comparison with similar process of nuclear alpha decay to discover the deviation is discussed, to explain why there exists a difficulty in this case.

Neutrino mass spectroscopy using Er$^{3+}$ ions placed at inversion center of host crystals

We propose neutrino mass spectroscopy using Er$^{3+}$:Cs$_2$NaYF$_6$ or :Y$_2$O$_3$ crystal placed in hollow of a Bragg fiber as a target system. Unknown neutrino parameters and properties such as the lightest neutrino mass, Majorana/Dirac distinction, and CP violating phases can be explored by measuring scattered photons ($γ$) along the excitation (and fiber) axis by varying Raman trigger ($γ_0$) directions, in Er$^{3+}$ de-excitation process from $|e\rangle $ state to $|g\rangle $ state; $|e\rangle \,, | e\rangle + γ_0 \rightarrow | g\rangle + γ+ ν_i\barν_j$, $ν_i\,, i = 1, 2,3$ being a mass-resolved neutrino state. Rates and required level of QED background rejection are calculated using measured data of the target system.

Energy response of X-rays under high flux conditions using a thin APD for the energy range of 6-33 keV

This paper reports on the demonstration of a high-rate energy measurement technique using a thin depletion layer silicon avalanche photodiode (Si-APD). A dedicated amplitude-to-time converter is developed to realize simultaneous energy and timing measurement in a high rate condition. The energy response of the system is systematically studied by using monochromatic X-ray beam with an incident energy ranging from 6 to 33 keV. The obtained energy spectra contain clear peaks and tail distributions. The peak fraction monotonously decreases as the incident photon energy increases. This phenomenon can be explained by considering the distribution of the energy deposit in silicon, which is investigated by using a Monte Carlo simulation.

Development of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with external feedback scheme

We report on the operation of co-located ${}^{129}$Xe and ${}^{131}$Xe nuclear spin masers with an external feedback scheme, and discuss the use of ${}^{131}$Xe as a comagnetometer in measurements of the ${}^{129}$Xe spin precession frequency. By applying a correction based on the observed change in the ${}^{131}$Xe frequency, the frequency instability due to magnetic field and cell temperature drifts are eliminated by two orders of magnitude. The frequency precision of 6.2 $μ$Hz is obtained for a 10$^4$ s averaging time, suggesting the possibility of future improvement to $\approx$ 1 nHz by improving the signal-to-noise ratio of the observation.

Fast X-ray detector system with simultaneous measurement of timing and energy for a single photon

We developed a fast X-ray detector system for nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) experiments. Our system employs silicon avalanche photo-diode (Si-APD) as a fast X-ray sensor. The system is able to acquire both timing and energy of a single X-ray photon simultaneously in a high rate condition, $10^6$ counts per second for one Si-APD. The performance of the system was investigated in SPring-8, a synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. Good time resolution of \SI{120}{ps} (FWHM) was achieved with a slight tail distribution in the time spectrum by a level of $10^{-9}$ at 1 ns apart from the peak. Using this system, we successfully observed the NRS from the 26.27-keV level of mercury-201, which has a half-life of $630 \pm 50$ ps. We also demonstrated the reduction of background events caused by radioactive decays in a radioactive sample by discriminating photon energy.

Nuclear resonant scattering experiment with fast time response: new scheme for observation of $^{229\rm m}$Th radiative decay

Nuclear resonant excitation of the 29.19-keV level in $^{229}$Th with high-brilliance synchrotron- radiation and detection of its decay signal, are proposed with the aim of populating the extremely low-energy isomeric state of $^{229}$Th.The proposed experiment, known as nuclear resonant scattering (NRS), has the merit of being free from uncertainties about the isomer level energy. However, it requires higher time resolution and shorter tail in the response function of the detector than that of conventional NRS experiments because of the short lifetime of the 29.19-keV state. We have fabricated an X-ray detector system which has a time resolution of 56 ps and a shorter tail function than the previously reported one. We have demonstrated an NRS experiment with the 26.27-keV nuclear level of $^{201}$Hg for feasibility assessment of the $^{229}$Th experiment. The NRS signal is clearly distinct from the prompt electronic scattering signal by the implemented detector system. The half-life of the 26.27-keV state of $^{201}$Hg is determined as 629 $\pm$ 18 ps which is better precision by a factor three than that reported to date.

High-precision quadrupole moment reveals significant intruder component in 33Al20 ground state

The electric quadrupole moment of the 33Al20 ground state, located at the border of the island of inversion, was obtained using continuous-beam beta-detected nuclear quadrupole resonance (beta-NQR). From the measured quadrupole coupling constant Q = 2.31(4) MHz in an alpha-Al2O3 crystal, a precise value for the electric quadrupole moment is extracted: Qs= 141(3) mb. A comparison with large-scale shell model calculations shows that 33Al has at least 50% intruder configurations in the ground state wave function, favoring the excitation of two neutrons across the N = 20 shell gap. 33Al therefore clearly marks the gradual transition north of the deformed Na and Mg nuclei towards the normal Z>14 isotopes.

A new method of creating high intensity neutron source

We propose a new scheme of producing intense neutron beam whose yields exceed those of existing facilities by many orders of magnitude. This scheme uses the recently proposed photon beam extracted from circulating quantum ions, which is directed to a deuteron target for photo-disintegration. The calculated neutron energy spectrum is nearly flat down to neV range, except a threshold rise and its adjacent wide structure. Hence, there exists a possibility of directly using sub-eV neutrons without a moderator. We shall have brief comments on promising particle physics applications using this large yield of neutron.

Thorium isomer for radiative emission of neutrino pair

It is proposed to use the isomer ionic ground state $^{229m}$Th$^{4+}$ embedded in transparent crystals for precision determination of unknown neutrino parameters. Isolation from solid environment of the proposed nuclear process, along with available experimental techniques of atomic physics, has a great potentiality for further study.

Production of spin-controlled rare isotope beams

The degree of freedom of spin in quantum systems serves as an unparalleled laboratory where intriguing quantum physical properties can be observed, and the ability to control spin is a powerful tool in physics research. We propose a novel method for controlling spin in a system of rare isotopes which takes advantage of the mechanism of the projectile fragmentation reaction combined with the momentum-dispersion matching technique. The present method was verified in an experiment at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory, in which a degree of alignment of 8% was achieved for the spin of a rare isotope Al-32. The figure of merit for the present method was found to be greater than that of the conventional method by a factor of more than 50.

Observation of new microsecond isomers among fission products of 345 MeV/nucleon 238U

A search for isomeric gamma-decays among fission fragments from 345 MeV/nucleon 238U has been performed at the RIKEN Nishina Center RI Beam Factory. Fission fragments were selected and identified using the superconducting in-flight separator BigRIPS and were implanted in an aluminum stopper. Delayed gamma-rays were detected using three clover-type high-purity germanium detectors located at the focal plane within a time window of 20 microseconds following the implantation. We identified a total of 54 microsecond isomers with half-lives of ~0.1 - 10 microseconds, including discovery of 18 new isomers in very neutron-rich nuclei: 59Tim, 90Asm, 92Sem, 93Sem, 94Brm, 95Brm, 96Brm, 97Rbm, 108Nbm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Pdm, 124Agm and 126Agm, and obtained a wealth of spectroscopic information such as half-lives, gamma-ray energies, gamma-ray relative intensities and gamma-gamma coincidences over a wide range of neutron-rich exotic nuclei. Proposed level schemes are presented for 59Tim, 82Gam, 92Brm, 94Brm, 95Brm, 97Rbm, 98Rbm, 108Nbm, 108Zrm, 109Mom, 117Rum, 119Rum, 120Rhm, 122Rhm, 121Pdm, 124Agm and 125Agm, based on the obtained spectroscopic information and the systematics in neighboring nuclei. Nature of the nuclear isomerism is discussed in relation to evolution of nuclear structure.

Precision measurement of the electric quadrupole moment of 31Al and determination of the effective proton charge in the sd-shell

he electric quadrupole coupling constant of the 31Al ground state is measured to be nu_Q = |eQV_{zz}/h| = 2196(21)kHz using two different beta-NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) techniques. For the first time, a direct comparison is made between the continuous rf technique and the adiabatic fast passage method. The obtained coupling constants of both methods are in excellent agreement with each other and a precise value for the quadrupole moment of 31Al has been deduced: |Q(31Al)| = 134.0(16) mb. Comparison of this value with large-scale shell-model calculations in the sd and sdpf valence spaces suggests that the 31Al ground state is dominated by normal sd-shell configurations with a possible small contribution of intruder states. The obtained value for |Q(31Al)| and a compilation of measured quadrupole moments of odd-Z even-N isotopes in comparison with shell-model calculations shows that the proton effective charge e_p=1.1 e provides a much better description of the nuclear properties in the sd-shell than the adopted value e_p=1.3 e.

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al

Ground-state electric quadrupole moment of 31Al (I =5/2+, T_1/2 = 644(25) ms) has been measured by means of the beta-NMR spectroscopy using a spin-polarized 31Al beam produced in the projectile fragmentation reaction. The obtained Q moment, |Q_exp(31Al)| = 112(32)emb, are in agreement with conventional shell model calculations within the sd valence space. Previous result on the magnetic moment also supports the validity of the sd model in this isotope, and thus it is concluded that 31Al is located outside of the island of inversion.
