Mesoscopic cross-film cryotrons: Vortex trapping and dc-Josephson-like oscillations of the critical current

We investigate theoretically and experimentally the transport properties of a plain Al superconducting strip in the presence of a single straight current-carrying wire, oriented perpendicular to the superconducting strip. It is well known that the critical current of the superconducting strip, Ic, in such cryotron--like system can be tuned by changing the current in the control wire, Iw. We demonstrated that the discrete change in the number of the pinned vortices/antivortices inside the narrow and long strip nearby the current-carrying wire results in a peculiar oscillatory dependence of Ic on Iw.

Reverse-domain superconductivity in superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids: effect of a vortex-free channel on the symmetry of I-V characteristics

We demonstrate experimentally that the presence of a single domain wall in an underlying ferromagnetic BaFe_{12}O_{19} substrate can induce a considerable asymmetry in the current (I) - voltage (V) characteristics of a superconducting Al bridge. The observed diode-like effect, i.e. polarity-dependent critical current, is associated with the formation of a vortex-free channel inside the superconducting area which increases the total current flowing through the superconducting bridge without dissipation. The vortex-free region appears only for a certain sign of the injected current and for a limited range of the external magnetic field.

Effect of ferromagnetic film thickness on magnetoresistance of thin-film superconductor-ferromagnet hybrids

We study the influence of the thickness Df of the plain ferromagnetic (F) film on the electrical resistance of the flux-coupled hybrids, consisting of superconducting (S) Al film and multilayer [Co/Pt] F film with out-of-plain magnetization. The behavior of such hybrids at high and low temperatures is found to be different: the nucleation of superconductivity at high temperatures is governed mainly by the typical lateral dimensions of the magnetic domains, while low temperature properties are determined by topology of the magnetic template. We show that an increase in the Df value leads to a broadening of the field- and temperature intervals where non-monotonous dependence of the superconducting critical temperature Tc on the applied magnetic field H is observed (for demagnetized F films). Further increase in the Df value results in a global suppression of superconductivity. Thus, we determined an optimal thickness, when the non-monotonous dependence Tc(H) can be observed in rather broad T and H range, what can be interesting for further studies of the localized superconductivity in planar Al-based S/F hybrids and for development of the devices which can exploit the localized superconductivity.

Planar superconductor/ferromagnet hybrids: Anisotropy of resistivity induced by magnetic templates

We investigated experimentally the transport properties of a superconducting cross-shaped aluminium microbridge fabricated on top of ferromagnetic BaFe12O19 single crystal. It was demonstrated that a one-dimensional domain structure in the ferromagnetic substrate can induce the formation of superconducting channels above magnetic domains. This leads to a giant anisotropy of resistivity of the superconducting bridge, caused by the appearance of continuous paths of supercurrents flowing along domain walls.

Tunable anisotropic nonlinearity in superconductors with asymmetric antidot array

The influence of the spatial asymmetry of the pinning potential on the spectral composition of the voltage, induced in perforated superconducting Al bridges by the injection of a sinusoidal bias current, was investigated. The loss of the mirror symmetry of the pinning potential leads to the appearance of even Fourier components in the induced voltage in the vicinity of the superconducting phase transition line on the H-T diagram (H is the external magnetic field, T is temperature). Artificially-introduced asymmetry for vortex motion makes it possible to create low-resistive materials, in which nonlinearity depends on the direction of injected electrical currents.

Nucleation of superconductivity and vortex matter in superconductor - ferromagnet hybrids

The theoretical and experimental results concerning the thermodynamical and low-frequency transport properties of hybrid structures, consisting of spatially-separated conventional low-temperature superconductor (S) and ferromagnet (F), is reviewed. Since the superconducting and ferromagnetic parts are assumed to be electrically insulated, no proximity effect is present and thus the interaction between both subsystems is through their respective magnetic stray fields. Depending on the temperature range and the value of the external field H_{ext}, different behavior of such S/F hybrids is anticipated. Rather close to the superconducting phase transition line, when the superconducting state is only weakly developed, the magnetization of the ferromagnet is solely determined by the magnetic history of the system and it is not influenced by the field generated by the supercurrents. In contrast to that, the nonuniform magnetic field pattern, induced by the ferromagnet, strongly affect the nucleation of superconductivity leading to an exotic dependence of the critical temperature T_{c} on H_{ext}. Deeper in the superconducting state the effect of the screening currents cannot be neglected anymore. In this region of the phase diagram various aspects of the interaction between vortices and magnetic inhomogeneities are discussed. In the last section we briefly summarize the physics of S/F hybrids when the magnetization of the ferromagnet is no longer fixed but can change under the influence of the superconducting currents. As a consequence, the superconductor and ferromagnet become truly coupled and the equilibrium configuration of this "soft" S/F hybrids requires rearrangements of both, superconducting and ferromagnetic characteristics, as compared with "hard" S/F structures.

Little-Parks effect and multiquanta vortices in a hybrid superconductor--ferromagnet system

Within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigate the phase diagram of a thin superconducting film with ferromagnetic nanoparticles. We study the oscillatory dependence of the critical temperature on an external magnetic field similar to the Little-Parks effect and formation of multiquantum vortex structures. The structure of a superconducting state is studied both analytically and numerically.

Domain wall superconductivity in hybrid superconductor -- ferromagnetic structures

On the basis of phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach we investigate the problem of order parameter nucleation in hybrid superconductor/ferromagnetic systems with a domain structure in applied external magnetic field. Both the isolated domain boundaries and periodic domain structures in ferromagnetic layers are considered. We study the interplay between the superconductivity localized at the domain walls and far from the walls and show that such interplay determines a peculiar field dependence of the critical temperature Tc. For a periodic domain structure the behavior of the upper critical field of superconductivity nucleation near Tc is strongly influenced by the overlapping of the superconducting nuclei localized over different domains.

Influence of surface irregularities on barriers for vortex entry in type-II superconductors

A theoretical description of the influence of surface irregularities (such as wedge-like cracks) on the Bean-Livingston energy barrier is presented. A careful quantitative estimate of the field of the first vortex entry H* into a homogeneous bulk superconductor with crack-like defects is obtained. This estimate is based on an exact analytical solution for the Meissner current distribution in a bulk superconductor with a single two-dimensional infinitely thin crack. This thin crack is characterized by the lowest H* value, and, thus, appears to be the best gate for vortex entry.
