Majorana Entanglement Bridge

We study the concurrence of entanglement between two quantum dots in contact to Majorana bound states on a floating superconducting island. The distance between the Majorana states, the charging energy of the island, and the average island charge are shown to be decisive parameters for the efficiency of entanglement generation. We find that long-range entanglement with basically distance-independent concurrence is possible over wide parameter regions, where the proposed setup realizes a "Majorana entanglement bridge". We also study the time-dependent concurrence obtained after one of the tunnel couplings is suddenly switched on, which reveals the timescales for generating entanglement. Accurate analytical expressions for the concurrence are derived both for the static and the time-dependent case. Our results indicate that entanglement formation in interacting Majorana devices can be fully understood in terms of an interplay of elastic cotunneling (also referred to as "teleportation") and crossed Andreev reflection processes.

Two-impurity helical Majorana problem

We predict experimentally accessible signatures for helical Majorana fermions in a topological superconductor by coupling to two quantum dots in the local moment regime (corresponding to spin-$1/2$ impurities). Taking into account RKKY interactions mediated by bulk and edge modes, where the latter cause a long-range antiferromagnetic Ising coupling, we formulate and solve the low-energy theory for this two-impurity helical Majorana problem. In particular, we show that the long-time spin dynamics after a magnetic field quench displays weakly damped oscillations with universal quality factor.

Quasiparticle trapping, Andreev level population dynamics, and charge imbalance in superconducting weak links

We present a comprehensive theoretical framework for the Andreev bound state population dynamics in superconducting weak links. Contrary to previous works, our approach takes into account the generated nonequilibrium distribution of the continuum quasiparticle states in a self-consistent way. As application of our theory, we show that the coupling of the superconducting contact to environmental phase fluctuations induces a charge imbalance of the continuum quasiparticle population. This imbalance is due to the breaking of the left-right symmetry in the rates connecting continuum quasiparticles and the Andreev bound state system, and causes a quasiparticle current on top of the Josephson current in a ring geometry. We evaluate the phase dependence of the quasiparticle current for realistic choices of the model parameters. Our theory also allows one to analyze the quantum coherent evolution of the system from an arbitrary initial state.

Transport properties of the Coulomb-Majorana junction

We provide a comprehensive theoretical description of low-energy quantum transport for a Coulomb-Majorana junction, where several helical Luttinger liquid nanowires are coupled to a joint mesoscopic superconductor with finite charging energy. Including the Majorana bound states formed near the ends of superconducting wire parts, we derive and analyze the Keldysh phase action describing nonequilibrium charge transport properties of the junction. The low-energy physics corresponds to a two-channel Kondo model with symmetry group SO(M), where M is the number of leads connected to the superconductor. Transport observables, such as the conductance tensor or current noise correlations, display non-trivial temperature or voltage dependences reflecting non-Fermi liquid behavior.

Anomalous Josephson current, incipient time-reversal symmetry breaking, and Majorana bound states in interacting multi-level dots

We study the combined effects of spin-orbit interaction, magnetic field, and Coulomb charging on the Josephson current-phase relation, I(φ), for a multi-level quantum dot tunnel-contacted by two conventional s-wave superconductors with phase difference φ. A general model is formulated and analyzed in the cotunneling regime (weak tunnel coupling) and in the deep subgap limit, fully taking into account interaction effects. We determine the conditions for observing a finite anomalous supercurrent I_a=I(φ=0). For a two-level dot with spin-orbit coupling and arbitrarily weak Zeeman field B, we find the onset behavior I_a\propto {\rm sgn}(B) in the presence of interactions, suggesting the incipient spontaneous breakdown of time-reversal symmetry. We also provide conditions for realizing spatially separated (but topologically unprotected) Majorana bound states in this system, which have a clear signature in the 2π-periodic current-phase relation.

Even-odd parity effects in Majorana junctions

We study a general Majorana junction, where N helical nanowires are connected to a common s-wave superconductor proximity-inducing Majorana bound states in the wires. The normal part of each wire (j=1,...,N) acts as connected lead, where electrons can tunnel into the respective Majorana state γ_{A,j}. The Majorana states at the other end, γ_{B,j}, are coupled to each other by an arbitrary tunnel matrix. We examine the conditions for even-odd parity effects in the tunnel conductance for various junction topologies.

Majorana single-charge transistor

We study transport through a Coulomb blockaded topologically nontrivial superconducting wire (with Majorana end states) contacted by metallic leads. An exact formula for the current through this interacting Majorana single-charge transistor is derived in terms of wire spectral functions. A comprehensive picture follows from three different approaches. We find Coulomb oscillations with universal halving of the finite-temperature peak conductance under strong blockade conditions, where the valley conductance mainly comes from elastic cotunneling. The nonlinear conductance exhibits finite-voltage sidebands due to anomalous tunneling involving Cooper pair splitting.

Supercurrent blockade in Josephson junctions with a Majorana wire

We study the Josephson effect for a topologically nontrivial superconducting (TS) wire with Majorana fermion end states and tunnel-coupled to s-wave BCS superconducting (S) electrodes. In an S-TS junction, no supercurrent flow is possible under fairly general conditions. For the S-TS-S junction, bulk TS quasiparticles must be accessible to have a Josephson effect. In the noninteracting case, we derive the exact current-phase relation (CPR) and find π-periodic behavior with negative critical current for weak tunnel couplings. Charging effects then cause the anomalous CPR $I(φ)=I_c \cosφ$, where the parity-sensitive critical current I_c provides a signature for Majorana states.

Coulomb blockade of Majorana fermion induced transport

We study Coulomb charging effects for transport through a topologically nontrivial superconducting wire, where Majorana bound states are present at the interface to normal-conducting leads. We construct the general Keldysh functional integral representation, and provide detailed results for the nonlinear current-voltage relation under weak Coulomb blockade conditions.

Energy spectrum and broken spin-surface locking in topological insulator quantum dots

We consider the energy spectrum and the spin-parity structure of the eigenstates for a quantum dot made of a strong topological insulator. Using the effective low-energy theory in a finite-length cylinder geometry, numerical calculations show that even at the lowest energy scales, the spin direction in a topologically protected surface mode is not locked to the surface. We find "zero-momentum" modes, and subgap states localized near the "caps" of the dot. Both the energy spectrum and the spin texture of the eigenstates are basically reproduced from an analytical surface Dirac fermion description. Our results are compared to microscopic calculations using a tight-binding model for a strong topological insulator in a finite-length nanowire geometry.

Magnetic scattering of Dirac fermions in topological insulators and graphene

We study quantum transport and scattering of massless Dirac fermions by spatially localized static magnetic fields. The employed model describes in a unified manner the effects of orbital magnetic fields, Zeeman and exchange fields in topological insulators, and the pseudo-magnetic fields caused by strain or defects in monolayer graphene. The general scattering theory is formulated, and for radially symmetric fields, the scattering amplitude and the total and transport cross sections are expressed in terms of phase shifts. As applications, we study ring-shaped magnetic fields (including the Aharanov-Bohm geometry) and scattering by magnetic dipoles.

Helical Luttinger liquid in topological insulator nanowires

We derive and analyze the effective low-energy theory for interacting electrons in a cylindrical nanowire made of a strong topological insulator. Three different approaches provide a consistent picture for the band structure, where surface states forming inside the bulk gap correspond to one-dimensional bands indexed by total angular momentum. When a half-integer magnetic flux pierces the nanowire, we find a strongly correlated helical Luttinger liquid topologically protected against weak disorder. We describe how transport experiments can detect this state.

Adiabatic polaron dynamics and Josephson effect in a superconducting molecular quantum dot

We study the Josephson current through a resonant level coupled to a vibration mode (local Holstein model) in the adiabatic limit of low oscillator frequency. A semiclassical theory is then appropriate and allows us to consider the oscillator dynamics within the Born-Oppenheimer approximation for arbitrary electron-vibration couplings. The resulting Fokker-Planck equation has been solved in the most relevant underdamped limit and yields the oscillator distribution function and the Josephson current. Remarkably, a transition from single-well to double-well behavior of the effective oscillator potential surface is possible and can be tuned by variation of the superconducting phase difference. The Josephson current is shown to be only weakly affected by the electron-vibration coupling due to strong phonon localization near the bottom of the potential surface.

Josephson effect for SU(4) carbon nanotube quantum dots

We present the theory of the Josephson effect in nanotube dots where an SU(4) symmetry can be realized. We find a remarkably rich phase diagram that significantly differs from the SU(2) case. In particular, π-junction behavior is largely suppressed. We analytically obtain the Josephson current in various parameter regions: (i) in the Kondo regime, covering the full crossover from SU(4) to SU(2), (ii) for weak tunnel couplings, and (iii) for large BCS gap. The transition between these regions is studied numerically.

Anomalous Josephson current through a spin-orbit coupled quantum dot

For a general model of a mesoscopic multi-level quantum dot, we determine the necessary conditions for the existence of an anomalous Josephson current with spontaneously broken time-reversal symmetry. They correspond to a finite spin-orbit coupling, a suitably oriented Zeeman field, and the dot being a chiral conductor. We provide analytical expressions for the anomalous supercurrent covering a wide parameter regime.

Josephson-current induced conformational switching of a molecular quantum dot

We discuss the behavior of a two-level system coupled to a quantum dot contacted by superconducting source/drain electrodes, representing a simple model for the conformational degree of freedom of a molecular dot or a break junction. The Josephson current is shown to induce conformational changes, including a complete reversal. For small bias voltage, periodic conformational motions induced by Landau-Zener transitions between Andreev states are predicted.

Quantum charge diffusion in underdamped Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires

The effect of quantum fluctuations on the current-voltage characteristics of Josephson junctions and superconducting nanowires is studied in the underdamped limit. Quantum fluctuations induce transitions between a Coulomb--blockade and a supercurrent branch, and can significantly modify the shape of current-voltage characteristics in the case of a highly resistive environment. Owing to the phase-charge duality, our results can be directly extended to the opposite overdamped limit.

Superconducting non-equilibrium transport through a weakly interacting quantum dot

We study the out-of-equilibrium current through an interacting quantum dot modelled as an Anderson impurity contacted by two BCS superconductors held at fixed voltage bias. In order to account for multiple Andreev reflections, we develop a Keldysh Green's function scheme perturbative in the dot's interaction strength. We find an unexpected enhancement of the current due to repulsive interactions for small lead-to-dot couplings.
