Optical conductivity in disordered alloys : an approach via the augmented space recursion

We present here a calculation of the configuration averaged optical conductivity of random binary alloys CuAu and AgAu. Our formulation is based on the augmented space formalism proposed by Mookerjee [J. Phys. C : Solid State Phys. {\bf 6} 1340 (1973)] and the optical conductivity is obtained directly through a recursive procedure suggested by Viswanath and Müller ["The user friendly recursion method", Troisieme Cycle de la Physique, en Suisse Romande (1993)].

Lattice thermal conductivity of disordered binary alloys : a formulation

We present here a formulation for the calculation of the configuration averaged lattice thermal conductivity in random alloys. Our formulation is based on the augmented-space theorem, introduced by one of us, combined with a generalized diagrammatic technique. The diagrammatic approach simplifies the problem of including effects of disorder corrections to a great extent. The approach allows us to obtain an expression for the effective heat current in case of disordered alloys, which in turn is used in a Kubo-Greenwood type formula for the thermal conductivity. We show that disorder scattering renormalizes the phonon propagators as well as the heat currents. The corrections to the current terms have been shown to be related to the self-energy of the propagators. We also study the effect of vertex corrections in a simplified ladder diagram approximation. A mode dependent diffusivity $D_γ$ and then a total thermal diffusivity averaged over different modes are defined. Schemes for implementing the said formalism are discussed. A few initial numerical results on the frequency and temperature dependence of lattice thermal conductivity are presented for NiPd alloy and are also compared with experiment. We also display numerical results on the frequency dependence of thermal diffusivity averaged over modes.

Large Magnetic Moments of Arsenic-Doped Mn Clusters and their Relevance to Mn-Doped III-V Semiconductor Ferromagnetism

We report electronic and magnetic structure of arsenic-doped manganese clusters from density-functional theory using generalized gradient approximation for the exchange-correlation energy. We find that arsenic stabilizes manganese clusters, though the ferromagnetic coupling between Mn atoms are found only in Mn$_2$As and Mn$_4$As clusters with magnetic moments 9 $μ_B$ and 17 $μ_B$, respectively. For all other sizes, $x=$ 3, 5-10, Mn$_x$As clusters show ferrimagnetic coupling. It is suggested that, if grown during the low temperature MBE, the giant magnetic moments due to ferromagnetic coupling in Mn$_2$As and Mn$_4$As clusters could play a role on the ferromagnetism and on the variation observed in the Curie temperature of Mn-doped III-V semiconductors.

Optical properties of random alloys : Application to Cu_{50}Au_{50} and Ni_{50}Pt_{50}

In an earlier paper [K. K. Saha and A. Mookerjee, Phys. Rev. B 70 (2004) (in press) or, cond-mat/0403456] we had presented a formulation for the calculation of the configuration-averaged optical conductivity in random alloys. Our formulation is based on the augmented-space theorem introduced by one of us [A. Mookerjee, J. Phys. C: Solid State Phys. 6, 1340 (1973)]. In this communication we shall combine our formulation with the tight-binding linear muffin-tin orbitals (TB-LMTO) technique to study the optical conductivities of two alloys Cu_{50}Au_{50} and Ni_{50}Pt_{50}.

Optical properties of random alloys : A formulation

We present here a formulation for the calculation of the configuration-averaged optical conductivity in random alloys. Our formulation is based on the augmented-space theorem introduced by one of us [A. Mookerjee, J. Phys. C: Solid State Phys. 6, 1340 (1973)]. We show that disorder scattering renormalizes the electron and hole propagators as well as the transition amplitude. The corrections to the transition amplitude have been shown to be related to the self-energy of the propagators and vertex corrections.

Block recursion and Green matrices

We present here generalization of the recursion method of Haydock et al [1] for the calculation of Green matrices (in angular momentum space). Earlier approaches concentrated on the diagonal elements, since the focus was on spectral densities. However, calculations of configuration averaged response functions or neutron scattering cross-sections require the entire Green matrices and self-energy matrices obtained from it. This necessitated the generalization of the recursion method presented here with examples.

Phase stability analysis in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy systems: An augmented space study

We have studied the problem of phase stability in Fe-Pt and Co-Pt alloy systems. We have used the orbital peeling technique in the conjunction of augmented space recursion based on the tight binding linear orbital method as the method for the calculation of pair interaction energies. In particular, we have generalized our earlier technique to take into account of magnetic effects for the cases where the magnetic transition is higher than the order disorder chemical transition temperature as in the case of Co$_3$Pt. Our theoretical results obtained within this framework successfully reproduce the experimentally observed trends.

Magnetic transition in Ni-Pt alloy Systems : Experiment and Theory

We report here the preparation and measurements on the susceptibility, sound velocity and internal friction for Ni-Pt systems. We then compare these experimental results with the first principle theoretical predictions and show that there is reasonable agreement with experiment and theory.

Inelastic neutron scattering in random binary alloys : an augmented space approach

Combining the augmented space representation for phonons with a generalized version of Yonezawa-Matsubara diagrammatic technique, we have set up a formalism to seperate the coherent and incoherent part of the total intensity of thermal neutron scattering from disordered alloys. This is done exacly without taking any recourse to mean-field like approximation (as done previously). The formalism includes disorder in masses, force constants and scattering lengths. Implementation of the formalism to realistic situations is performed by an augmented space Block recursion which calculates entire Green matrix and self energy matrix which in turn is needed to evaluate the coherent and incoherent intensities. we apply the formalism to NiPd and NiPt alloys. Numerical results on coherent and incoherent scattering cross sections are presented along the highest symmetry directions. Finally the incoherent intensities are compared with the CPA and also with experiments.

Electronic structure of random binary alloys : an augmented space formulation in reciprocal space

We present here a reciprocal space formulation of the Augmented space recursion (ASR) which uses the lattice translation symmetry in the full augmented space to produce configuration averaged quantities, such as spectral functions and complex band structures. Since the real space part is taken into account {\sl exactly} and there is no truncation of this in the recursion, the results are more accurate than recursions in real space. We have also described the Brillouin zone integration procedure to obtain the configuration averaged density of states. We apply the technique to Ni$_{50}$Pt$_{50}$ alloy in conjunction with the tight-binding linearized muffin-tin orbital basis. These developments in the theoretical basis were necessitated by our future application to obtain optical conductivity in random systems.

Phase Stability in 3d-5d (NiPt and CuAu) and 3d-4d (NiPd and CuAg) Systems

We show the differences in the stability of 3d-5d (NiPt and CuAu) and 3d-4d (NiPd and CuAg) alloys arise mainly due to relativistic corrections. The magnetic properties of disordered NiPd and NiPt alloys also differ due to these corrections which lead to increase in the separation between s-d bands of 5d elements in these alloys. For the magnetic case we analyze the results in terms of splitting of majority and minority spin d-band centers of the 3d elements. We further examine the effect of relativistic corrections to the pair energies and order disorder transition temperatures in these alloys. The magnetic moments and Curie temperatures have also been studied along with the short range ordering/segregation effects in NiPt/NiPd alloys.

Magnetic properties of X-Pt (X=Fe,Co,Ni) alloy systems

We have studied the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloy systems in ordered and disordered phases. The influence of various exchange-correlation functionals on values of equilibrium lattice parameters and magnetic moments in ordered Fe-Pt, Co-Pt and Ni-Pt alloys have been studied using linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The electronic structure calculations for the disordered alloys have been carried out using augmented space recursion technique in the framework of tight binding linearized muffin-tin orbital method. The effect of short range order has also been studied in the disordered phase of these systems. The results show good agreements with available experimental values.

Symmetry reduction in the augmented space recursion formalism for random binary alloys

We present here an efficient method which systematically reduces the rank of the augmented space and thereby helps to implement augmented space recursion for any real calculation. Our method is based on the symmetry of the Hamiltonian in the augmented space and keeping recursion basis vectors in the irreducible subspace of the Hilbert space.

Vibrational properties of phonons in random binary alloys: An augmented space recursive technique in the k-representation

We present here an augmented space recursive technique in the k-representation which include diagonal, off-diagonal and the environmental disorder explicitly : an analytic, translationally invariant, multiple scattering theory for phonons in random binary alloys. We propose the augmented space recursion (ASR) as a computationally fast and accurate technique which will incorporate configuration fluctuations over a large local environment. We apply the formalism to $Ni_{55}Pd_{45}$, $Ni_{88}Cr_12}$ and $Ni_{50}Pt_{50}$ alloys which is not a random choice. Numerical results on spectral functions, coherent structure factors, dispersion curves and disordered induced FWHM's are presented. Finally the results are compared with the recent itinerant coherent potential approximation (ICPA) and also with experiments.

Structure and stability of copper clusters : A tight-binding molecular dynamics study

In this paper we propose a tight-binding molecular dynamics with parameters fitted to first-principles calculations on the smaller clusters and with an environment correction, to be a powerful technique for studying large transition/noble metal clusters. In particular, the structure and stability of $Cu_n$ clusters for $n=3-55$ are studied by using this technique. The results for small $Cu_n$ clusters ($n=3-9$) show good agreement with {\it ab initio} calculations and available experimental results. In the size range $10\le n \le 55$ most of the clusters adopt icosahedral structure which can be derived from the 13-atom icosahedron, the polyicosahedral 19-, 23-, and 26-atom clusters and the 55-atom icosahedron, by adding or removing atoms. However, a local geometrical change from icosahedral to decahedral structure is observed for $n = 40-44$ and return to the icosahedral growth pattern is found at $n=45$ which continues. Electronic "magic numbers" ($n=2$, 8, 20, 34, 40) in this regime are correctly reproduced. Due to electron pairing in HOMOs, even-odd alternation is found. A sudden loss of even-odd alternation in second difference of cluster binding energy, HOMO-LUMO gap energy and ionization potential is observed in the region $n\sim40$ due to structural change there. Interplay between electronic and geometrical structure is found.

Study of Phase Stability in NiPt Systems

We have studied the problem of phase stability in NiPt alloy system. We have used the augmented space recursion based on the TB-LMTO as the method for studying the electronic structure of the alloys. In particular, we have used the relativistic generalization of our earlier technique. We note that, in order to predict the proper ground state structures and energetics, in addition to relativistic effects, we have to take into account charge transfer effects with precision.

Electronic and Optical Properties of ZnIn$_2$Te$_4$

Band structure and optical properties of defect- Chalcopyrite type semiconductor ZnIn$_2$Te$_4$ have been studied by TB-LMTO first principle technique. The optical absorption calculation suggest that ZnIn$_2$Te$_4$ is a direct-gap semiconductor having a band gap of 1.40 eV., which confirms the experimentally measured value. The calculated complex dielectric-function $ε(E) = ε_1(E) + iε_2(E)$ reveal distinct structures at energies of the critical points in the Brillouin zone.

Study of a pair of coupled continuum equations modeling surface growth

In this communication we introduce a pair of coupled continuum equations to model overlayer growth with evaporation-accretion due to thermal or mechanical agitations of the substrate. We gain insight into the dynamics of growth via one-loop perturbative techniques. This allows us to analyze our numerical data. We conclude that there is a crossover behaviour from a roughening regime to a very long-time, large length scale smoothening regime.
