Classifying right-angled Hecke C*-algebras via K-theoretic invariants

Exploiting the graph product structure and results concerning amalgamated free products of C*-algebras we provide an explicit computation of the K-theoretic invariants of right-angled Hecke C*-algebras, including concrete algebraic representants of a basis in K-theory. On the way, we show that these Hecke algebras are KK-equivalent with their undeformed counterparts and satisfy the UCT. Our results are applied to study the isomorphism problem for Hecke C*-algebras, highlighting the limits of K-theoretic classification, both for varying Coxeter type as well as for fixed Coxeter type.

The Haagerup property for twisted groupoid dynamical systems

We introduce the Haagerup property for twisted groupoid $C^*$-dynamical systems in terms of naturally defined positive-definite operator-valued multipliers. By developing a version of `the Haagerup trick' we prove that this property is equivalent to the Haagerup property of the reduced crossed product $C^*$-algebra with respect to the canonical conditional expectation $E$. This extends a theorem of Dong and Ruan for discrete group actions, and implies that a given Cartan inclusion of separable $C^*$-algebras has the Haagerup property if and only if the associated Weyl groupoid has the Haagerup property in the sense of Tu. We use the latter statement to prove that every separable $C^*$-algebra which has the Haagerup property with respect to some Cartan subalgebra satisfies the Universal Coefficient Theorem. This generalises a recent result of Barlak and Li on the UCT for nuclear Cartan pairs.

On the Baum--Connes conjecture for discrete quantum groups with torsion and the quantum Rosenberg Conjecture

We give a decomposition of the equivariant Kasparov category for discrete quantum group with torsions. As an outcome, we show that the crossed product by a discrete quantum group in a certain class preserves the UCT. We then show that quasidiagonality of a reduced C*-algebra of a countable discrete quantum group $Γ$ implies that $Γ$ is amenable, and deduce from the work of Tikuisis, White and Winter, and the results in the first part of the paper, the converse (i.e. the quantum Rosenberg Conjecture) for a large class of countable discrete unimodular quantum groups. We also note that the unimodularity is a necessary condition.

Noncommutative Furstenberg boundary

We introduce and study the notions of boundary actions and of the Furstenberg boundary of a discrete quantum group. As for classical groups, properties of boundary actions turn out to encode significant properties of the operator algebras associated with the discrete quantum group in question; for example we prove that if the action on the Furstenberg boundary is faithful, the quantum group C*-algebra admits at most one KMS-state for the scaling automorphism group. To obtain these results we develop a version of Hamana's theory of injective envelopes for quantum group actions, and establish several facts on relative amenability for quantum subgroups. We then show that the Gromov boundary actions of free orthogonal quantum groups, as studied by Vaes and Vergnioux, are also boundary actions in our sense; we obtain this by proving that these actions admit unique stationary states. Moreover, we prove these actions are faithful, hence conclude a new unique KMS-state property in the general case, and a new proof of unique trace property when restricted to the unimodular case. We prove equivalence of simplicity of the crossed products of all boundary actions of a given discrete quantum group, and use it to obtain a new simplicity result for the crossed product of the Gromov boundary actions of free orthogonal quantum groups.

Maximal subgroups and von Neumann subalgebras with the Haagerup property

We initiate a study of maximal subgroups and maximal von Neumann subalgebras which have the Haagerup property. We determine maximal Haagerup subgroups inside $\mathbb{Z}^2 \rtimes SL_2(\mathbb{Z})$ and obtain several explicit instances where maximal Haagerup subgroups yield maximal Haagerup subalgebras. Our techniques are on one hand based on group-theoretic considerations, and on the other on certain results on intermediate von Neumann algebras, in particular these allowing us to deduce that all the intermediate algebras for certain inclusions arise from groups or from group actions. Some remarks and examples concerning maximal non-(T) subgroups and subalgebras are also presented, and we answer two questions of Ge regarding maximal von Neumann subalgebras.

Fixed points and limits of convolution powers of contractive quantum measures

We study fixed points of contractive convolution operators associated to contractive quantum measures on locally compact quantum groups. We characterise the existence of non-zero fixed points respectively on $L^\infty(\mathbb{G})$ and on $C_0(\mathbb{G})$, and exploit these results to obtain for example the structure of the fixed points on the non-commutative $L_p$-spaces. Some consequences for the fixed points of classical convolution operators and Herz-Schur multipliers are also indicated.

Generating functionals for locally compact quantum groups

Every symmetric generating functional of a convolution semigroup of states on a locally compact quantum group is shown to admit a dense unital $*$-subalgebra with core-like properties in its domain. On the other hand we prove that every normalised, symmetric, hermitian conditionally positive functional on a dense $*$-subalgebra of the unitisation of the universal C$^*$-algebra of a locally compact quantum group, satisfying certain technical conditions, extends in a canonical way to a generating functional. Some consequences of these results are outlined, notably those related to constructing cocycles out of convolution semigroups.

On C*-completions of discrete quantum group rings

We discuss just infiniteness of C*-algebras associated to discrete quantum groups and relate it to the C*-uniqueness of the quantum groups in question, i.e. to the uniqueness of a C*-completion of the underlying Hopf *-algebra. It is shown that duals of q-deformations of simply connected semisimple compact Lie groups are never C*-unique. On the other hand we present an example of a discrete quantum group which is not locally finite and yet is C*-unique.

Quantum symmetries of the twisted tensor products of C*-algebras

We consider the construction of twisted tensor products in the category of C*-algebras equipped with orthogonal filtrations and under certain assumptions on the form of the twist compute the corresponding quantum symmetry group, which turns out to be the generalised Drinfeld double of the quantum symmetry groups of the original filtrations. We show how these results apply to a wide class of crossed products of C*-algebras by actions of discrete groups. We also discuss an example where the hypothesis of our main theorem is not satisfied and the quantum symmetry group is not a generalised Drinfeld double.

Lévy-Khintchine decompositions for generating functionals on algebras associated to universal compact quantum groups

We study the first and second cohomology groups of the $^*$-algebras of the universal unitary and orthogonal quantum groups $U_F^+$ and $O_F^+$. This provides valuable information for constructing and classifying Lévy processes on these quantum groups, as pointed out by Schürmann. In the case when all eigenvalues of $F^*F$ are distinct, we show that these $^*$-algebras have the properties (GC), (NC), and (LK) introduced by Schürmann and studied recently by Franz, Gerhold and Thom. In the degenerate case $F=I_d$, we show that they do not have any of these properties. We also compute the second cohomology group of $U_d^+$ with trivial coefficients -- $H^2(U_d^+,{}_ε\Bbb{C}_ε)\cong \Bbb{C}^{d^2-1}$ -- and construct an explicit basis for the corresponding second cohomology group for $O_d^+$ (whose dimension was known earlier thanks to the work of Collins, Härtel and Thom).

Convolution semigroups on locally compact quantum groups and noncommutative Dirichlet forms

The subject of this paper is the study of convolution semigroups of states on a locally compact quantum group, generalising classical families of distributions of a Lévy process on a locally compact group. In particular a definitive one-to-one correspondence between symmetric convolution semigroups of states and noncommutative Dirichlet forms satisfying the natural translation invariance property is established, extending earlier partial results and providing a powerful tool to analyse such semigroups. This is then applied to provide new characterisations of the Haagerup Property and Property (T) for locally compact quantum groups, and some examples are presented. The proofs of the main theorems require developing certain general results concerning Haagerup's $L^{p}$-spaces.

Positive Herz-Schur multipliers and approximation properties of crossed products

For a $C^*$-algebra $A$ and a set $X$ we give a Stinespring-type characterisation of the completely positive Schur $A$-multipliers on $K(\ell^2(X))\otimes A$. We then relate them to completely positive Herz-Schur multipliers on $C^*$-algebraic crossed products of the form $A\rtimes_{α,r} G$, with $G$ a discrete group, whose various versions were considered earlier by Anantharaman-Delaroche, Bédos and Conti, and Dong and Ruan. The latter maps are shown to implement approximation properties, such as nuclearity or the Haagerup property, for $A\rtimes_{α,r} G$.

On MASAs in $q$-deformed von Neumann algebras

We study certain $q$-deformed analogues of the maximal abelian subalgebras of the group von Neumann algebras of free groups. The radial subalgebra is defined for Hecke deformed von Neumann algebras of the Coxeter group $(\mathbb{Z}/{2\mathbb{Z}})^{\star k}$ and shown to be a maximal abelian subalgebra which is singular and with Pukánszky invariant $\{\infty\}$. Further all non-equal generator masas in the $q$-deformed Gaussian von Neumann algebras are shown to be mutually non-unitarily conjugate.

Introduction to compact and discrete quantum groups

These are notes from introductory lectures at the graduate school "Topological Quantum Groups" in Będlewo (June 28--July 11, 2015). The notes present the passage from Hopf algebras to compact quantum groups and sketch the notion of discrete quantum groups viewed as duals of compact quantum groups.

Remarks on factoriality and $q$-deformations

We prove that the mixed $q$-Gaussian algebra $Γ_{Q}(H_{\mathbb{R}})$ associated to a real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ and a real symmetric matrix $Q=(q_{ij})$ with $\sup|q_{ij}|<1$, is a factor as soon as $\dim H_{\mathbb{R}}\geq2$. We also discuss the factoriality of $q$-deformed Araki-Woods algebras, in particular showing that the $q$-deformed Araki-Woods algebra $Γ_{q}(H_{\mathbb{R}},U_{t})$ given by a real Hilbert space $H_{\mathbb{R}}$ and a strongly continuous group $U_{t}$ is a factor when $\dim H_{\mathbb{R}}\geq2$ and $U_{t}$ admits an invariant eigenvector.

Around Property (T) for quantum groups

We study Property (T) for locally compact quantum groups, providing several new characterisations, especially related to operator algebraic ergodic theory. Quantum Property (T) is described in terms of the existence of various Kazhdan type pairs, and some earlier structural results of Kyed, Chen and Ng are strengthened and generalised. For second countable discrete unimodular quantum groups with low duals Property (T) is shown to be equivalent to Property (T)$^{1,1}$ of Bekka and Valette. This is used to extend to this class of quantum groups classical theorems on 'typical' representations (due to Kerr and Pichot), and on connections of Property (T) with spectral gaps (due to Li and Ng) and with strong ergodicity of weakly mixing actions on a particular von Neumann algebra (due to Connes and Weiss). Finally we discuss in the Appendix equivalent characterisations of the notion of a quantum group morphism with dense image.
