Homogeneous Black Strings in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet with Horndeski hair and beyond

In this paper we construct new exact solutions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet and Lovelock gravity, describing asymptotically flat black strings. The solutions exist also under the inclusion of a cosmological term in the action, and are supported by scalar fields with finite energy density, which are linear along the extended direction and have kinetic terms constructed out from Lovelock tensors. The divergenceless nature of the Lovelock tensors in the kinetic terms ensures that the whole theory is second order. For spherically, hyperbolic and planar symmetric spacetimes on the string, we obtain an effective Wheeler's polynomial which determines the lapse function up to an algebraic equation. For the sake of concreteness, we explicitly show the existence of a family of asymptotically flat black strings in six dimensions, as well as asymptotically AdS$_{5}\times R$ black string solutions and compute the temperature, mass density and entropy density. We compute the latter by Wald's formula and show that it receives a contribution from the non-minimal kinetic coupling of the matter part, shifting the one-quarter factor coming from the Einstein term, on top of the usual non areal contribution arising from the quadratic Gauss-Bonnet term. Finally, for a special value of the couplings of the theory in six dimensions, we construct strings that contain asymptotically AdS wormholes as well as rotating solutions on the transverse section. By including more scalars the strings can be extended to $p$-branes, in arbitrary dimensions.

Axionic black branes with conformal coupling

We find neutral and charged black branes solutions with axion fields in the context of a conformally coupled gravitational theory in four dimensions. These solutions describe AdS black branes supported by axion fields that break translational invariance at the boundary, providing for momentum dissipation. The conformally coupled scalar field is regular inside and outside the event horizon and there is no need of any self-interaction, obtaining in this way solutions without fine-tuned parameters. We analyze the thermodynamics of our solutions considering the effects of the axion charges and it is shown that axionic and electric charges must be related such that the conformal scalar field does not contribute to the mass. We compute the holographic DC conductivity and we show how it is affected by the inclusion of the conformal scalar field, which provides a temperature independent behavior. We include a non-linear axionic contribution given by a k-essence term that modifies the DC conductivity providing for more general behaviors. Finally, we endorse our solutions with rotation showing that angular momentum is sustained by the axion charges.

Axionic black branes in the k-essence sector of the Horndeski model

We construct new black brane solutions in the context of Horndeski gravity, in particular in its K-essence sector. These models are supported by axion scalar fields that depend only on the horizon coordinates. The dynamics of these fields is determined by a K-essence term that includes the standard kinetic term $X$ and a correction of the form $X^{k}$. We find both neutral and charged exact and analytic solutions in $D$-dimensions, which are asymptotically anti de Sitter. Then, we describe in detail the thermodynamical properties of the four-dimensional solutions and we compute the dual holographic DC conductivity.

Exact black strings and p-branes in general relativity

We present a new set of analytic solutions of general relativity with a negative cosmological constant, which describe black strings and black p-branes in arbitrary number of dimensions, $D$. The solutions are supported by minimally coupled, free scalar fields, carrying finite energy density.

Quintic quasi-topological gravity

We construct a quintic quasi-topological gravity in five dimensions, i.e. a theory with a Lagrangian containing $\mathcal{R}^5$ terms and whose field equations are of second order on spherically (hyperbolic or planar) symmetric spacetimes. These theories have recently received attention since when formulated on asymptotically AdS spacetimes might provide for gravity duals of a broad class of CFTs. For simplicity we focus on five dimensions. We show that this theory fulfils a Birkhoff's Theorem as it is the case in Lovelock gravity and therefore, for generic values of the couplings, there is no s-wave propagating mode. We prove that the spherically symmetric solution is determined by a quintic algebraic polynomial equation which resembles Wheeler's polynomial of Lovelock gravity. For the black hole solutions we compute the temperature, mass and entropy and show that the first law of black holes thermodynamics is fulfilled. Besides of being of fourth order in general, we show that the field equations, when linearized around AdS are of second order, and therefore the theory does not propagate ghosts around this background. Besides the class of theories originally introduced in arXiv:1003.4773 [gr-qc], the general geometric structure of these Lagrangians remains an open problem.

Static and rotating solutions for Vector-Galileon theories

We consider a particular truncation of the generalized Proca field theory in four dimensions for which we construct a static and axisymmetric rotating black hole "stealth solutions", namely solutions with (Anti) de Sitter or Kerr metric but non-trivial vector field. The static configuration is promoted to a backreacting black hole with asymptotic (Anti) de Sitter behavior by turning on a nonlinear electrodynamic source given as a fixed power of the Maxwell invariant. Finally we extend our solutions to arbitrary dimensions.

Boson stars in biscalar extensions of Horndeski gravity

This paper is concerned with the construction and analysis of boson stars in the context of nonminimal derivative coupling theories. In particular we embed our model in the biscalar extension of Horndeski gravity, considering a scalar field theory displaying a nonminimally coupled kinetic term given by the Einstein tensor. We focus on the case where the potential is given by a mass term only, and when a six order self-interaction is included. In the latter case we consider specific couplings in the self-interacting terms in such a way that our self-interaction is given by a positive definite potential presenting two degenerate local vacua. We show how solutions can be obtained and we compare its principal properties with standard configurations constructed with the usual minimally coupled kinetic term.

Slowly rotating neutron stars in the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski gravity

This work is devoted to the construction of slowly rotating neutron stars in the framework of the nonminimal derivative coupling sector of Horndeski theory. We match the large radius expansion of spherically symmetric solutions with cosmological solutions and we find that the most viable model has only one free parameter. Then, by using several tabulated and realistic equations of state, we establish numerically the upper bound for this parameter in order to construct neutron stars in the slow rotation approximation with the maximal mass observed today. We finally study the surface redshift and the inertia of these objects and compare them with known data.

From topological to non-topological solitons: kinks, domain walls and Q-balls in a scalar field model with non-trivial vacuum manifold

We consider a scalar field model with a self-interaction potential that possesses a discrete vacuum manifold. We point out that this model allows for both topological as well as non-topological solitons. In (1+1) dimensions both type of solutions have finite energy, while in (3+1) dimensions, the topological solitons have finite energy per unit area only and correspond to domain walls. Non-topological solitons with finite energy do exist in (3+1) dimensions due to a non-trivial phase of the scalar field and an associated U(1) symmetry of the model, though. We construct these so-called Q-ball solutions numerically, point out the differences to previous studies with different scalar field potentials and also discuss the influence of a minimal coupling to both gravity as well as a U(1) gauge field. In this latter case, the conserved Noether charge Q can be interpreted as the electric charge of the solution.

Exact solutions in $\mathcal{R}^{2}$ SUGRA

This letter is devoted to show that the bosonic sector of the $\mathcal{R}^{2}$-SUGRA in four dimensions, constructed with the F-term, admits a variety of exact and analytic solutions which include, pp- and AdS waves, asymptotically flat and AdS black holes and wormholes, as well as product spacetimes. The existence of static black holes and wormholes implies that a combination involving the Ricci scalar plus the norm of the field strength of the auxiliary two-form $B_{μν}$, must be a constant. We focus on this sector of the theory which has two subsectors depending on whether such a combination vanishes or not.

Nonminimal derivative coupling scalar-tensor theories: odd-parity perturbations and black hole stability

We derive the odd parity perturbation equation in scalar-tensor theories with a non minimal kinetic coupling sector of the general Horndeski theory, where the kinetic term is coupled to the metric and the Einstein tensor. We derive the potential of the perturbation, by identifying a master function and switching to tortoise coordinates. We then prove the mode stability under linear odd- parity perturbations of hairy black holes in this sector of Horndeski theory, when a cosmological constant term in the action is included. Finally, we comment on the existence of slowly rotating black hole solutions in this setup and discuss their implications on the physics of compact objects configurations, such as neutron stars.

Neutron stars in general second order scalar-tensor theory: the case of non-minimal derivative coupling

We consider the sector of Horndeski's gravity characterized by the coupling between the kinetic scalar field term and the Einstein tensor. We numerically construct neutron star configurations where the external geometry is identical to the Schwarzschild metric but the interior structure is considerably different from standard general relativity. We constrain the only parameter of this model from the requirement that compact configurations exist, and we argue that solutions less compact than neutron stars, such as white dwarfs, are also supported. Therefore, our model provides an explicit modification of general relativity that is astrophysically viable and does not conflict with Solar System tests.

Asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in Horndeski theory

In this paper we construct asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in the presence of a scalar field whose kinetic term is constructed out from a linear combination of the metric and the Einstein tensor. The field equations as well as the energy-momentum tensor are second order in the metric and the field, therefore the theory belongs to the ones defined by Horndeski. We show that in the presence of a cosmological term in the action, it is possible to have a real scalar field in the region outside the event horizon. The solutions are characterized by a single integration constant, the scalar field vanishes at the horizon and it contributes to the effective cosmological constant at infinity. We extend these results to the topological case. The solution is disconnected from the maximally symmetric AdS background, however, within this family there exits a gravitational soliton which is everywhere regular. This soliton is therefore used as a background to define a finite Euclidean action and to obtain the thermodynamics of the black holes. For a certain region in the space of parameters, the thermodynamic analysis reveals a critical temperature at which a Hawking-Page phase transition between the black hole and the soliton occurs. We extend the solution to arbitrary dimensions grater than four and show that the presence of a cosmological term in the action allows to consider the case in which the standard kinetic term for the scalar it's not present. In such scenario, the solution reduces to an asymptotically flat black hole.

Asymptotically locally AdS and flat black holes in the presence of an electric field in the Horndeski scenario

Asymptotically locally AdS and asymptotically flat black hole solutions are found for a particular case of the Horndeski action. The action contains the Einstein-Hilbert term with a cosmological constant, a real scalar field with a non minimal kinetic coupling given by the Einstein tensor, the minimal kinetic coupling and the Maxwell term. There is no scalar potential. The solution has two integration constants related with the mass and the electric charge. The solution is given for all dimensions. A new class of asymptotically locally flat spherically symmetric black holes is found when the minimal kinetic coupling vanishes and the cosmological constant is present. In this case we get a solution which represents an electric Universe. The electric field at infinity is only supported by $Λ$. When the cosmological constant vanishes the black hole is asymptotically flat.

Asymptotically (anti) de Sitter Black Holes and Wormholes with a Self Interacting Scalar Field in Four Dimensions

The aim of this paper is to report on the existence of a wide variety of exact solutions, ranging from black holes to wormholes, when a conformally coupled scalar field with a self interacting potential containing a linear, a cubic and a quartic self interaction is taken as a source of the energy-momentum tensor, in the Einstein theory with a cosmological constant. Among all the solutions there are two particularly interesting. On the one hand, the spherically symmetric black holes when the cosmological constant is positive; they are shown to be everywhere regular, namely there is no singularity neither inside nor outside the event horizon. On the other hand, there are spherically symmetric and topological wormholes that connect two asymptotically (anti) de Sitter regions with a different value for the cosmological constant. The regular black holes and the wormholes are supported by everywhere regular scalar field configurations.
