Ehlers transformations as a tool for constructing accelerating NUT black holes

This paper investigates the integrability properties of Einstein's theory of gravity in the context of accelerating Newman-Unti-Tamburino (NUT) spacetimes by utilizing Ernst's description of stationary and axially symmetric electrovacuum solutions. We employ Ehlers transformations, Lie point symmetries of the Einstein field equations, to efficiently endorse accelerating metrics with a nontrivial NUT charge. Under this context, we begin by rederiving the known C-metric NUT spacetime described by Chng, Mann, and Stelea in a straightforward manner, and in the new form of the solution introduced by Podolský and Vrátný. Next, we construct for the first time an accelerating NUT black hole dressed with a conformally coupled scalar field. These solutions belong to the general class of type I spacetimes and, therefore, cannot be obtained from any limit of the Plebanśki-Demiański family whatsoever and their integration needs to be carried out independently. Including Maxwell fields is certainly permitted, however, the use of Ehlers transformations is subtle and requires further modifications. Ehlers transformations not only partially rotate the mass parameter such that its magnetic component appears, but also rotate the corresponding gauge fields. Notwithstanding, the alignment of the electromagnetic potentials can be successfully performed via a duality transformation, hence providing a novel Reissner-Nordström-C-metric NUT black hole that correctly reproduces the Reissner-Nordström-C-metric and Reissner-Nordström-NUT configurations in the corresponding limiting cases. We describe the main geometric features of these solutions and discuss possible embeddings of our geometries in external electromagnetic and rotating backgrounds.

Exact rotating wormholes via Ehlers transformations

In this paper, we construct exact rotating wormholes using Ehlers solution-generating technique. This is based on the Ernst description of four-dimensional, stationary, and axially symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. We adopt the static Barceló-Visser wormhole derived from the Einstein-Maxwell-conformal-scalar theory as a seed, and demonstrate, through the Ernst approach, how to construct two novel geometries of rotating wormholes. These geometries correspond to the Barceló-Visser wormhole embedded within a rotating and a magnetic background, respectively. In the first case, the rotation is a result of a dragging force (due to the rotating background) acting on the initial static wormhole, while in the second case it is caused by the electromagnetic interaction between the electric charge of the static wormhole and the external magnetic field. We conduct a comprehensive analysis of the geometric properties of these configurations, and examine the new features introduced by rotation, such as the emergence of ergoregions. Recent evidence suggests that incorporating slow rotation can stabilise wormholes, rendering these exact, fully rotating solutions particularly appealing.

AdS-Taub-NUT spacetimes and exact black bounces with scalar hair

We present a new family of exact four-dimensional Taub-NUT spacetimes in Einstein-$Λ$ theory supplemented with a conformally coupled scalar field exhibiting a power-counting super-renormalizable potential. The construction proceeds as follows: A solution of a conformally coupled theory with a conformal potential, henceforth the seed $(g_{μν},ϕ)$, is transformed by the action of a specific change of frame in addition with a simultaneous shift of the seed scalar. The new configuration, $(\bar{g}_{μν},\barϕ)$, solves the field equations of a conformally coupled theory with the aforementioned super-renormalizable potential. The solution spectrum of the seed is notoriously enhanced. We highlight the existence of two types of exact black bounces given by de Sitter and anti-de Sitter geometries that transit across three different configurations each. The de Sitter geometries transit from a regular black hole with event and cosmological horizons to a bouncing cosmology connecting two de Sitter Universes with different values of the asymptotic cosmological constant. An intermediate phase represented by a de Sitter wormhole or by a bouncing cosmology that connects two de Sitter Universes is shown, this under the presence of a cosmological horizon. On the other hand, the anti-de Sitter geometries transit from a regular black hole with inner and event horizons to a wormhole that connects two asymptotic boundaries with different constant curvatures. The intermediate phase is given by an anti-de Sitter regular black hole with a single event horizon that appears in two different settings. As a regular anti-de Sitter black hole inside of an anti-de Sitter wormhole or as an anti-de Sitter regular black hole with an internal cosmological bounce. These geometries are smoothly connected by the mass parameter only. Other black holes, bouncing cosmologies and wormholes are also found.

Gravitational instantons with conformally coupled scalar fields

We present novel regular Euclidean solutions to General Relativity in presence of Maxwell and conformally coupled scalar fields. In particular, we consider metrics of the Eguchi-Hanson and Taub-NUT families to solve the field equations analytically. The solutions have nontrivial topology labeled by the Hirzebruch signature and Euler characteristic that we compute explicitly. We find that, although the solutions are locally inequivalent with the original (anti-)self-dual Eguchi-Hanson metric, their asymptotically locally Euclidean limit leads to the same global properties. We revisit the Taub-NUT solution previously found in the literature, analyze their nuts and bolts structure, and obtain the renormalized Euclidean on-shell action as well as their topological invariants. Additionally, we discuss how the solutions get modified in presence of higher-curvature corrections that respect conformal invariance. In the conformally invariant case, we obtain novel Eguchi-Hanson and Taub-NUT solutions and demonstrate that both Euclidean on-shell action and Noether-Wald charges are finite without any reference to intrinsic boundary counterterms.

Accelerated Black Holes beyond Maxwell's Electrodynamics

Theories of non-linear electrodynamics naturally describe deviations from Maxwell's theory in the strong field regime. Among these, of special interest is the recently discovered ModMax electrodynamics, which is a unique 1-parametric generalization of Maxwell's theory that possesses the conformal invariance as well as the electromagnetic duality. In this paper we construct the asymptotically AdS accelerated black holes in this theory and study their thermodynamics - providing thus a first example of accelerated solutions coupled to non-linear electrodynamics. Our study opens a window towards studying radiative spacetimes in non-linear electromagnetic regime as well as raises new challenges for their corresponding holographic interpretation.

Quasitopological electromagnetism: Reissner-Nordström black strings in Einstein and Lovelock gravities

In this work, we provide consistent compactifications of Einstein-Maxwell and Einstein-Maxwell-Lovelock theories on direct product spacetimes of the form $\mathcal{M}_D=\mathcal{M}_d\times\mathcal{K}^{p}$, where $\mathcal{K}^p$ is a Euclidean internal manifold of constant curvature. For these compactifications to take place, it is required the distribution of a precise flux of $p$-forms over the internal manifold. The dynamic of the $p$-forms are demanded to be controlled by two types of interaction. First, by specific couplings with the curvature tensor and, second, by a suitable interaction with the electromagnetic field of the $d$-dimensional brane, the latter being dictated by a modification of the recently proposed theory of Quasitopological Electromagnetism. The field equations of the corresponding compactified theories, which are of second order, are solved and general homogenous charged black p-branes are constructed. We explicitly provide homogenous Reissner-Nordström black strings and black p-branes in Einstein-Maxwell theory and homogenous charged Boulware-Deser black p-branes for quadratic and cubic Maxwell-Lovelock gravities.

General Relativity from Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

In this work we show that Einstein gravity in four dimensions can be consistently obtained from the compactification of a generic higher curvature Lovelock theory in dimension $D=4+p$, being $p\geq1$. The compactification is performed on a direct product space $\mathcal{M}_D=\mathcal{M}_4\times\mathcal{K}^p$, where $\mathcal{K}^p$ is a Euclidean internal manifold of constant curvature. The process is carried out in such a way that no fine tuning between the coupling constants is needed. The compactification requires to dress the internal manifold with the flux of suitable $p$-forms whose field strengths are proportional to the volume form of the internal space. We explicitly compactify Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory from dimension six to Einstein theory in dimension four and sketch out a similar procedure for this compactification to take place starting from dimension five. Several black string/p-branes solutions are constructed, among which, a five dimensional asymptotically flat black string composed of a Schwarzschild black hole on the brane is particularly interesting. Finally, the thermodynamic of the solutions is described and we find that the consistent compactification modifies the entropy by including a constant term, which may induce a departure from the usual behavior of the Hawking-Page phase transition. New scenarios are possible in which large black holes dominate the canonical ensamble for all temperatures above the minimal value.

Exploring the black hole spectrum of axionic Horndeski theory

We provide a ``user-friendly'' algorithm to systematically and rapidly obtain exact planar black hole solutions in the Einstein-Maxwell theory deformed by the most general shift- and reflection-symmetric Horndeski sector where the usual Galileon is replaced by a tuple of scalars with profiles linear in the coordinates of the transverse manifold. Under precise assumptions, these axion backgrounds break the translational invariance of the system, causing momentum dissipation in the holographically dual field theory. The success of the method relies on the simple realization that the bulk equations of motion become more tractable when written in terms of the axions kinetic terms, instead of the radial coordinate. Showcasing this particularly efficient recipe, we derive novel asymptotically AdS black holes, and show that their extremal counterparts always flow to an $\mathrm{AdS}_2\times \mathbb{R}^2$ infrared fixed point. Additionally, we report an interesting family of new asymptotically Lifshitz black hole solutions with $z>1$. Finally, we discuss the DC transport properties of the dual relativistic field theories in view of possible applications to condensed matter systems.

Exact \textit{pp}-waves, (A)dS waves and Kundt spaces in the Abelian-Higgs model

We find new exact solutions of the Abelian-Higgs model coupled to General Relativity, characterized by a non-vanishing superconducting current. The solutions correspond to \textit{pp}-waves, AdS waves, and Kundt spaces, for which both the Maxwell field and the gradient of the phase of the scalar are aligned with the null direction defining these spaces. In the Kundt family, the geometry of the two-dimensional surfaces orthogonal to the superconducting current is determined by the solutions of the two-dimensional Liouville equation, and in consequence, these surfaces are of constant curvature, as it occurs in a vacuum. The solution to the Liouville equation also acts as a potential for the Maxwell field, which we integrate into a closed-form. Using these results, we show that the combined effects of the gravitational and scalar interactions can confine the electromagnetic field within a bounded region in the surfaces transverse to the current.

Plebanski-Demianski solutions in Quadratic gravity with conformally coupled scalar fields

We show that the Plebanski-Demianski spacetime persists as a solution of General Relativity when the theory is supplemented with both, a conformally coupled scalar theory and with quadratic curvature corrections. The quadratic terms are of two types and are given by quadratic combinations of the Riemann tensor as well as a higher curvature interaction constructed with a scalar field which is conformally coupled to quadratic terms in the curvature. The later is built in terms of a four-rank tensor $S_{μν}^{\ \ λρ}$ that depends on the Riemann tensor and the scalar field, and that transforms covariantly under local Weyl rescallings. Due to the generality of the Plebanski-Demianski family, several new hairy black hole solutions are obtained in this higher curvature model. We pay particular attention to the C-metric spacetime and the stationary Taub-NUT metric, which in the hyperbolic case can be analytically extended leading to healthy, asymptotically AdS, wormhole configurations. Finally, we present a new general model for higher derivative, conformally coupled scalars, depending on an arbitrary function and that we have dubbed Conformal K-essence. We also construct spherically symmetric hairy black holes for these general models.

Regular black holes via the Kerr-Schild construction in DHOST theories

We extend the standard Kerr-Schild solution generating method to higher order scalar tensor theories that are shift-invariant for the scalar field. Certain degeneracy conditions, crucial for the absence of Ostrogradski ghosts, are found to be required for the validity of the Kerr-Schild ansatz while on the other hand, theories with no parity symmetry are excluded from the solution generating method. The extended Kerr-Schild symmetry turns out to be a very useful tool to easily construct black hole solutions from simple seed configurations. In particular, the generating method developed is adapted to construct generic black holes but also regular black hole solutions within Degenerate Higher Order Scalar Tensor (DHOST) theories. As a particular example we show how to construct explicitly the Hayward metric as a solution to a specific DHOST theory.

Quasitopological electromagnetism and black holes

In this paper we extend the quasitopological electromagnetism, recently introduced by H.-S. Liu et al. [arXiv:1907.10876], to arbitrary dimensions by introducing a fundamental $p$-form field. This allows us to construct new dyonic black hole solutions in odd dimensions, as well as regular $D$-dimensional black holes and solitons. The three-dimensional system consists of a Maxwell field interacting with a scalar field, leading to a deformation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. We present the general formulas defining the black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions in Lovelock theory and explore the thermal properties of the asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in the gravitational framework of general relativity. In five dimensions, the latter black holes possess a rich phase space structure in the canonical ensemble, giving rise to as many as five different black hole phases at a fixed temperature, for a given range of the parameters.

Lovelock black p-branes with fluxes

In this paper we construct compactifications of generic, higher curvature Lovelock theories of gravity over direct product spaces of the type $\mathcal{M}_D=\mathcal{M}_d \times \mathcal{S}^p $, with $D=d+p$ and $d\ge5$, where $\mathcal{S}^p$ represents an internal, Euclidean manifold of positive constant curvature. We show that this can be accomplished by including suitable non-minimally coupled $p-1$-form fields with a field strength proportional to the volume form of the internal space. We provide explicit details of this constructions for the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory in $d+2$ and $d+3$ dimensions by using one and two-form fundamental fields, and provide as well the formulae that allows to construct the same family of compactification in any Lovelock theory from dimension $d+p$ to dimension $d$. These fluxed compactifications lead to an effective Lovelock theory on the compactfied manifold, allowing therefore to find, in the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet case, black holes in the Boulware-Deser family.

Stabilizing Homogeneous Black Strings in AdS

It is known that homogenous black strings in flat spacetime are unstable under long wavelength perturbations. Recently, by including scalar fields that depend on the extended coordinates only, homogenous black strings have been constructed in the presence of a negative cosmological constant, therefore implying that generic perturbations will contain both metric and scalar fluctuations. Here we show that for such generic perturbations homogeneous black strings with a negative cosmological constant are perturbatively stable at linear level, regardless the size of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole located on the brane.

Joule-Thomson expansion in AdS black holes with momentum relaxation

The inner structure of realistic materials make them exhibit momentum relaxation. In this paper we study the holographic version of the Joule-Thomson effect on AdS black holes in which translational invariance is broken by two methods: First by considering planar black holes in general relativity supported by axion scalar fields with a linear dependence on the horizon coordinates and secondly by considering black holes in massive gravity models in which momentum relaxation is obtained by breaking the bulk diffeomorphism invariance of the theory. In contrast with black holes studied so far, for both theories it is possible to obtain inversion curves with two branches reproducing the behavior of Van der Wall fluids. Moreover in the specific case of the massive gravity model we show that black holes can heat up when crossing the inversion curve.

Static and rotating black strings in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity

Four-dimensional homogeneous static and rotating black strings in dynamical Chern-Simons modified gravity, with and without torsion, are presented. Each solution is supported by a scalar field that depends linearly on the coordinate that span the string. The solutions are locally $\mbox{AdS}_3 \times \mathbb{R}$ and they represent the continuation of the Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black hole. Moreover, they belong to the so-called Chern-Simons sector of the space of solutions of the theory, since the Cotton tensor contributes nontrivially to the field equations. The case with nonvanishing torsion is studied within the first-order formalism of gravity, and it considers nonminimal couplings of the scalar fields to three topological invariants: Nieh-Yan, Pontryagin and Gauss-Bonnet terms, which are studied separately. These nonminimal couplings generate torsion in vacuum, in contrast to Einstein-Cartan theory. In all cases, torsion contributes to an effective cosmological constant that, in particular cases, can be set to zero by a proper choice of the parameters.

Axionic charged black branes with arbitrary scalar nonminimal coupling

In this paper, we construct four-dimensional charged black branes of a nonminimally coupled and self-interacting scalar field. In addition to the scalar and Maxwell fields, the model involves two axionic fields homogeneously distributed along the two-dimensional planar base manifold providing in turn a simple mechanism of momentum dissipation. Interestingly enough, the horizon of the solution can be set at two different positions, whose locations depend on the axionic parameter, and in both cases there exists a wide range of values of the nonminimal coupling parameter yielding physical acceptable solutions. For one of our solutions, the allowed nonminimal coupling parameters take discrete values and it turns out to be extremal since its has zero temperature. A complete analysis of the thermodynamical features of the solutions is also carried out. Finally, thanks to the mechanism of momentum dissipation, the holographic DC conductivities of the solutions are computed in term of the black hole horizon data, and we analyze the effects of the nonminimal coupling parameter on these conductivities. For example, we notice that for the non extremal solutions, there always exists a nonminimal coupling (which is greater than the conformal one in four dimensions) yielding perfect conductivity in the sense that the conductivity is infinite. Even more astonishing, the conductivity matrix for the extremal solutions has a Hall effect-like behavior.

On four-dimensional Einsteinian gravity, quasitopological gravity, cosmology and black holes

We show that the combination of cubic invariants defining five-dimensional quasitopological gravity, when written in four dimensions, reduce to the version of four-dimensional Einsteinian gravity recently proposed by Arciniega, Edelstein & Jaime, that produces second order equations of motion in a FLRW ansatz, with a purely geometrical inflationary period. We introduce a quartic version of the four-dimensional Einsteinian theory with similar properties, and study its consequences. In particular we found that there exists a region on the space of parameters which allows for thermodynamically stable black holes, as well as a well-defined cosmology with geometrically driven inflation. We briefly discuss the cosmological inhomogeneities in this setup. We also provide a combination of quintic invariants with those properties.
