Invariants of almost complex and almost Kähler manifolds

Let $(M^{2n},J)$ be a compact almost complex manifold. The almost complex invariant $h^{p,q}_J$ is defined as the complex dimension of the cohomology space $\left\{\left[α\right]\in H^{p+q}_{dR}(M^{2n};\mathbb{C}) \,\vert\,α\in A^{p,q}(M^{2n}),\, dα= 0 \right\}$. When $2n=4$, it has many interesting properties. Endow $(M^{2n},J)$ with an almost Hermitian metric $g$. The number $h^{p,q}_d$, i.e., the complex dimension of the space of Hodge-de Rham harmonic $(p,q)$-forms, is almost Kähler invariant when $2n=4$. In this paper we study the relationship between $h^{p,q}_J$ and $h^{p,q}_d$ in dimension $2n\ge4$. We prove $h^{n,0}_J=0$ if $J$ is non integrable and show that $h^{p,0}_d$ is almost Kähler invariant. If $M^{2n}$ is a compact quotient of a completely solvable Lie group and $(J,g,ω)$ is left invariant, we find information also on $h^{1,1}_d$. Finally we study the $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-pure and $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-full properties of $J$ on $n$-forms for the special dimension $2n=4m$.

Almost complex blow-ups and positive closed $(1,1)$-forms on $4$-dimensional almost complex manifolds

Let $(M,J)$ be a $2n$-dimensional almost complex manifold and let $x\in M$. We define the notion of almost complex blow-up of $(M,J)$ at $x$. We prove the existence of almost complex blow-ups at $x$ under suitable assumptions on the almost complex structure $J$ and we provide explicit examples of such a construction. We note that almost complex blow-ups are unique. When $(M,J)$ is a $4$-dimensional almost complex manifold, we give an obstruction on $J$ to the existence of almost complex blow-ups at a point and prove that the almost complex blow-up at a point of a compact almost Kähler manifold is almost Kähler.

On Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies of almost complex manifolds and related spaces of harmonic forms

In this paper we introduce several new cohomologies of almost complex manifolds, among which stands a generalization of Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies defined using the operators $d$, $d^c$. We explain how they are connected to already existing cohomologies of almost complex manifolds and we study the spaces of harmonic forms associated to $d$, $d^c$, showing their relation with Bott-Chern and Aeppli cohomologies and to other well-studied spaces of harmonic forms. Notably, Bott-Chern cohomology of $1$-forms is finite-dimensional on compact manifolds and provides an almost complex invariant $h^1_{d + d^c}$ that distinguishes between almost complex structures. On almost Kähler $4$-manifolds, the spaces of harmonic forms we consider are particularly well-behaved and are linked to harmonic forms considered by Tseng and Yau in the study of symplectic cohomology.

An integral condition involving $\overline\partial$-harmonic $(0,1)$-forms

We study compact almost complex manifolds admitting a Hermitian metric satisfying an integral condition involving $\overline \partial$-harmonic $(0,1)$-forms. We prove that this integral condition is automatically satisfied, if the Hermitian metric on the compact almost complex manifold is strongly Gauduchon. Under the further assumption that the almost complex structure is integrable, we show that the integral condition for a Gauduchon metric is equivalent to be strongly Gauduchon. In particular, a compact complex surface with a Gauduchon metric satisfying the integral condition is automatically Kähler. If we drop the integrability assumption on the complex structure, we show that there exists a compact almost complex $4$-dimensional manifold with a Hermitian metric satisfying the integral condition, but which does not admit any compatible almost-Kähler metric.

Rank of the Nijenhuis tensor on parallelizable almost complex manifolds

We study almost complex structures on parallelizable manifolds via the rank of their Nijenhuis tensor. First, we show how the computations of such rank can be reduced to finding smooth functions on the underlying manifold solving a system of first order PDEs. On specific manifolds, we find an explicit solution. Then we compute the Nijenhuis tensor on curves of almost complex structures, showing that there is no constraint (except for lower semi-continuity) to the possible jumps of its rank. Finally, we focus on $6$-nilmanifolds and the associated Lie algebras. We classify which $6$-dimensional, nilpotent, real Lie algebras admit almost complex structures whose Nijenhuis tensor has a given rank, deducing the corresponding classification for left-invariant structures on $6$-nilmanifolds. We also find a topological upper-bound for the rank of the Nijenhuis tensor for left-invariant almost complex structures on solvmanifolds of any dimension, obtained as a quotient of a completely solvable Lie group. Our results are complemented by a large number of examples.

Primitive decompositions of Dolbeault harmonic forms on compact almost-Kähler manifolds

Let $(X,J,g,ω)$ be a compact $2n$-dimensional almost-Kähler manifold. We prove primitive decompositions of $\partial$-, $\overline{\partial}$-harmonic forms on $X$ in bidegree $(1,1)$ and $(n-1,n-1)$ (such bidegrees appear to be optimal). We provide examples showing that in bidegree $(1,1)$ the $\partial$- and $\overline{\partial}$-decompositions differ.

On the dimension of Dolbeault harmonic (1,1)-forms on almost Hermitian 4-manifolds

We prove that the dimension $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}$ of the space of Dolbeault harmonic $(1,1)$-forms is not necessarily always equal to $b^-$ on a compact almost complex 4-manifold endowed with an almost Hermitian metric which is not locally conformally almost Kähler. Indeed, we provide examples of non integrable, non locally conformally almost Kähler, almost Hermitian structures on compact 4-manifolds with $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}=b^-+1$. This answers to a question by Holt.

On cohomological and formal properties of Strong Kähler with torsion and astheno-Kähler metrics

We provide families of compact astheno-Kähler nilmanifolds and we study the behaviour of the complex blowup of such manifolds. We prove that the existence of an astheno-Kähler metric satisfying an extra differential condition is not preserved by blowup. We also study the interplay between Strong Kähler with torsion metrics and geometrically Bott-Chern metrics. We show that Fino-Parton-Salamon nilmanifolds are geometrically-Bott-Chern-formal, whereas we obtain negative results on the product of two copies of primary Kodaira surface, Inoue surface of type $\mathcal{S}_M$ and on the product of a Kodaira surface with an Inoue surface.

Bott-Chern Laplacian on almost Hermitian manifolds

Let $(M,J,g,ω)$ be a $2n$-dimensional almost Hermitian manifold. We extend the definition of the Bott-Chern Laplacian on $(M,J,g,ω)$, proving that it is still elliptic. On a compact Kähler manifold, the kernels of the Dolbeault Laplacian and of the Bott-Chern Laplacian coincide. We show that such a property does not hold when $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a compact almost Kähler manifold, providing an explicit almost Kähler structure on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold. Furthermore, if $(M,J,g,ω)$ is a connected compact almost Hermitian $4$-manifold, denoting by $h^{1,1}_{BC}$ the dimension of the space of Bott-Chern harmonic $(1,1)$-forms, we prove that either $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-$ or $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-+1$. In particular, if $g$ is almost Kähler, then $h^{1,1}_{BC}=b^-+1$, extending the result by Holt and Zhang for the kernel of Dolbeault Laplacian. We also show that the dimensions of the spaces of Bott-Chern and Dolbeault harmonic $(1,1)$-forms behave differently on almost complex 4-manifolds endowed with strictly locally conformally almost Kähler metrics. Finally, we relate some spaces of Bott-Chern harmonic forms to the Bott-Chern cohomology groups for almost complex manifolds, recently introduced by Coelho, Placini and Stelzig.

$\overline\partial$-Harmonic forms on $4$-dimensional almost-Hermitian manifolds

Let $(X,J)$ be a $4$-dimensional compact almost-complex manifold and let $g$ be a Hermitian metric on $(X,J)$. Denote by $Δ_{\overline\partial}:=\overline\partial\overline\partial^*+\overline\partial^*\overline\partial$ the $\overline\partial$-Laplacian. If $g$ is \emph{globally conformally Kähler}, respectively \emph{(strictly) locally conformally Kähler}, we prove that the dimension of the space of $\overline\partial$-harmonic $(1,1)$-forms on $X$, denoted as $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}$, is a topological invariant given by $b_-+1$, respectively $b_-$. As an application, we provide a one-parameter family of almost-Hermitian structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold for which such a dimension is $b_-$. This gives a positive answer to a question raised by T. Holt and W. Zhang. Furthermore, the previous example shows that $h^{1,1}_{\overline\partial}$ depends on the metric, answering to a Kodaira and Spencer's problem. Notice that such almost-complex manifolds admit both almost-Kähler and (strictly) locally conformally Kähler metrics and this fact cannot occur on compact complex manifolds.

Families of almost complex structures and transverse $(p,p)$-forms

An {\em almost p-Kähler manifold} is a triple $(M,J,Ω)$, where $(M,J)$ is an almost complex manifold of real dimension $2n$ and $Ω$ is a closed real tranverse $(p,p)$-form on $(M,J)$, where $1\leq p\leq n$. When $J$ is integrable, almost $p$-Kähler manifolds are called $p$-{\em Kähler manifolds}. We produce families of almost $p$-Kähler structures $(J_t,Ω_t)$ on $\C^3$, $\C^4$, and on the real torus $\mathbb{T}^6$, arising as deformations of Kähler structures $(J_0,g_0,ω_0)$, such that the almost complex structures $J_t$ cannot be locally compatible with any symplectic form for $t\neq 0$. Furthermore, examples of special compact nilmanifolds with and without almost $p$-Kähler structures are presented.

Almost-complex invariants of families of six-dimensional solvmanifolds

We compute almost-complex invariants $h^{p,0}_{\overline\partial}$, $h^{p,0}_{\text{Dol}}$ and almost-Hermitian invariants $h^{p,0}_{\barδ}$ on families of almost-Kähler and almost-Hermitian $6$-dimensional solvmanifolds. Finally, as a consequence of almost-Kähler identities we provide an obstruction to the existence of a symplectic structure on a given compact almost-complex manifold. Notice that, when $(X,J,g,ω)$ is a compact almost Hermitian manifold of real dimension greater than four, not much is known concerning the numbers $h^{p,q}_{\overline\partial}$.

On Kodaira dimension of almost complex 4-dimensional solvmanifolds without complex structures

The aim of this paper is to continue the study of Kodaira dimension for almost complex manifolds, focusing on the case of compact $4$-dimensional solvmanifolds without any integrable almost complex structure. According to the classification theory we consider: $\mathfrak{r}\mathfrak{r}_{3, -1}$, $\mathfrak{nil}^4$ and $\mathfrak{r}_{4, λ, -(1 + λ)}$ with $-1 < λ< -\frac{1}{2}$. For the first solvmanifold we introduce special families of almost complex structures, compute the corresponding Kodaira dimension and show that it is no longer a deformation invariant. Moreover we prove Ricci flatness of the canonical connection for the almost Kähler structure. Regarding the other two manifolds we compute the Kodaira dimension for certain almost complex structures. Finally we construct a natural hypercomplex structure providing a twistorial description.

Dolbeault and $J$-invariant cohomologies on almost complex manifolds

In this paper we relate the cohomology of $J$-invariant forms to the Dolbeault cohomology of an almost complex manifold. We find necessary and sufficient condition for the inclusion of the former into the latter to be true up to isomorphism. We also extend some results obtained by J. Cirici and S.O. Wilson about the computation of the left-invariant cohomology of nilmanifolds to the setting of solvmanifolds. Several examples are given.

Remarks on some compact symplectic solvmanifolds

We study the hard Lefschetz property on compact symplectic solvmanifolds, i.e., compact quotients $M=Γ\backslash G$ of a simply-connected solvable Lie group $G$ by a lattice $Γ$, admitting a symplectic structure.

Note on Dolbeault cohomology and Hodge structures up to bimeromorphisms

We construct a simply-connected compact complex non-Kähler manifold satisfying the $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma, and endowed with a balanced metric. To this aim, we were initially aimed at investigating the stability of the property of satisfying the $\partial\bar\partial$-Lemma under modifications of compact complex manifolds and orbifolds. This question has been recently addressed and answered in \cite{rao-yang-yang, yang-yang, stelzig-blowup, stelzig-doublecomplex} with different techniques. Here, we provide a different approach using Čech cohomology theory to study the Dolbeault cohomology of the blow-up $\tilde X_Z$ of a compact complex manifold $X$ along a submanifold $Z$ admitting a holomorphically contractible neighbourhood.

On the Anti-Invariant Cohomology of Almost Complex Manifolds

We study the space of closed anti-invariant forms on an almost complex manifold, possibly non compact. We construct families of (non integrable) almost complex structures on $\R^4$, such that the space of closed $J$-anti-invariant forms is infinite dimensional, and also $0$- or $1$-dimensional. In the compact case, we construct $6$-dimensional almost complex manifolds with arbitrary large anti-invariant cohomology and a $2$-parameter family of almost complex structures on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold whose anti-invariant cohomology group has maximum dimension.
