Hidden Symmetry of Kerr-deSitter from Manifest Symmetry of Painlevé VI

We show that the recently discovered ``mass symmetries" of the radial Teukolsky equation for Kerr-deSitter black holes can be understood from a corresponding symmetry of the Painlevé VI equation via the classical theory of ``isomonodromic deformations". It is known that a subset of the mass symmetries transforms the Teukolsky equation to a wave equation on a ``dual" Lorentzian spacetime. We find that this dual spacetime again represents a black hole, and use this insight to re-obtain a previously known partial mode stability result in a geometric manner. Further special geometric features of the dual spacetime are pointed out.

Ringdown waves from hairy black holes

We study how quasinormal-mode frequencies may encode information about the effective matter source responsible for black-hole hair. Using the established eikonal correspondence between quasinormal modes and unstable null geodesics, we relate shifts in the ringdown spectrum to perturbations of the photon-orbit frequency and Lyapunov exponent. The black hole hair is treated as an anisotropic fluid perturbatively added to the vacuum black holes (Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes). In particular, we derive formulas which allow one to directly read off deviations from the Schwarzschild or Kerr QNM spectrum in terms of the corresponding equation-of-state parameters of the anisotropic fluid. In this setting, regardless of the energy conditions, our formulas provide a systematic method for computing quasi-normal mode frequencies for a broad class of hairy black holes.

Consistency in the Quantum-Improved Charged Black Holes

We investigate the consistency in the thermodynamics and the approaches at the equation and action levels for the quantum-improved charged black holes with scale-dependent couplings. For the quantum-improved Reissner-Nordström black holes, we find that the thermodynamic consistency allows both the Newton and electromagnetic couplings to have arbitrary dependence on the radial coordinate. We point out a subtlety in the chemical potential with the scale-dependent electromagnetic coupling in the study of thermodynamics. We also examine the compatibility of the Einstein equations at the equation and action levels with the Bianchi identity, identifying the need for an additional quantum energy-momentum tensor. We then find that the consistency between the approaches at the equation and action levels requires that the Newton coupling satisfy certain property. Finally, we extend the analysis to cosmological solutions, suggesting that quantum-induced modifications can drive the isotropization of the early universe.

Instability thresholds for de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes in holographic semiclassical gravity

We study the stability of $d$-dimensional ($d=3,4,5$) de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes within the framework of semiclassical gravity sourced by a strongly coupled quantum field with a gravity dual. Our stability results are derived from a careful analysis of the $d$-dimensional Lichnerowicz equation with mass-squared $m^2$ and of semiclassical equations involving the dimensionless parameter $γ_d$. For $d=3$, we find that Minkowski spacetime is always unstable against perturbations, whereas de Sitter spacetime becomes stable when a dimensionless parameter $γ_3$ exceeds a critical value. In $d=4$, both de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes become unstable when the parameter $γ_4$ exceeds its critical value. In contrast, in $d=5$, de Sitter and Minkowski spacetimes remain stable for almost all values of the parameter $γ_5$, except for a regime in which higher-curvature corrections become comparable to the Einstein tensor.

Ringdown in Vaidya spacetimes: time-dependent frequencies, Penrose limit and time-domain analyses

We examine the possible characterization of ringdown waves in a dynamical Vaidya spacetime using the Penrose limit geometry around the dynamical photon sphere. In the case of a static spherically symmetric black hole spacetime, it is known that the quasinormal frequency in the eikonal limit can be characterized by the angular velocity and the Lyapunov exponent for the null geodesic congruence on the orbit of the unstable circular null geodesic. This correspondence can be further backed up by the analysis of the Penrose limit geometry around the unstable circular null geodesic orbit. We try to extend this analysis to a Vaidya spacetime, focusing on the dynamical photon sphere in it. Then we discuss to what extent the Penrose limit geometry can be relevant to the ringdown waves in the Vaidya spacetime, comparing the results with the numerically calculated waveform in the Vaidya spacetime.

Bianchi-I cosmology with scale dependent $G$ and $Λ$ in asymptotically safe gravity

We study anisotropic Bianchi-I cosmology, incorporating quantum gravitational corrections into the Einstein equation through the scale-dependent Newton coupling and cosmological term, as determined by the flow equation of the effective action for gravity. For the classical cosmological constant $Λ_0=0$, we derive the quantum mechanically corrected, or quantum-improved power-series solution for a general equation-of-state parameter $w$ in the range $-1 0$, we obtain the inverse power-series solution in the exponential of the cosmic time. We find that the universe always becomes isotropic in the late time, in accordance with the cosmic no hair theorem, and the quantum corrections make the isotropization faster. We also briefly summarize the Kasner solution and its generalization with quantum corrections.

Energy Conditions and Quantum Information

The concept of energy lies at the foundation of physical science. In general relativity and quantum field theory, the positivity and conservation of energy are encapsulated by the so-called energy-momentum tensor and the energy conditions. In recent efforts to unify fundamental physics with quantum information, the energy conditions have come to play a crucial role in establishing numerous theorems. In this article, we review the basics of energy conditions in general relativity and their applications in gravitational physics, quantum field theory, and the holographic principle. Through these applications, we explore the profound connection between the energy conditions and quantum information

Self-gravitating strings and quantum effects in two-dimensional gravity

It is expected that when the string coupling is taken to be sufficiently small, a black hole turns into a bound state of self-gravitating fundamental strings. This state would be described by winding strings wrapping around the Euclidean time circle, known as the Horowitz-Polchinski solution. In this paper, we study such a self-gravitating string configuration in two-dimensional dilaton gravity theories. We first derive an analytic expression of the solution describing a winding string in two-dimensions and investigate in detail the geometry of this solution. Our winding string solution in two dimensions describes the geometry near the surface of the bound state of self-gravitating strings in the large-dimension limit, much like a two-dimensional black hole describes the near horizon geometry of the Schwarzschild black hole in the large-dimension limit. To study quantum effects around self-gravitating strings, we obtain an analytic solution of winding strings in the RST model. In a similar fashion to the Hartle-Hawking vacuum around a black hole, our string solution in the RST model contains the background radiation, whose temperature is the same as that of the winding strings.

The higher dimensional instabilities of AdS in holographic semiclassical gravity

In the framework of AdS/CFT duality, we consider the semiclassical problem in general quadratic theory of gravity. We construct asymptotically global AdS and hyperbolic~(topological) AdS black hole solutions with non-trivial quantum hair in $4$ and $5$-dimensions by perturbing the maximally symmetric AdS solutions to the holographic semiclassical equations. We find that under certain conditions, our semiclassical solution of hyperbolic AdS black holes can be dynamically unstable against linear perturbations. In this holographic semiclassical context, we also study the thermodynamic instability of the hairy solutions in the $5$-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet theory by computing the free energy and show that depending on the parameter of the Gauss-Bonnet theory, the free energy can be smaller than that of the background maximally symmetric AdS solution in both the global AdS and hyperbolic AdS black hole cases.

Quantum Improved Regular Kerr Black Holes

We study the quantum improvement of Kerr black holes with mass-dependent scale identifications in asymptotically safe gravity. We find that a physically sensible identification can only be a function of $Mr$ and the area $A=4π(r^2+a^2)$ where $M$ is the mass of the black hole and $a$ is an angular momentum parameter. We then discuss various properties of the rotating quantum black holes for a simple choice of the identification. We show that the resulting regular rotating black holes have the following nice properties: (i) admitting a consistent black hole thermodynamics at the horizon, (ii) resolving the ring singularity, (iii) partially eliminating closed time-like curves present in the classical Kerr black holes.

Quantum focusing conjecture in two-dimensional evaporating black holes

We consider the quantum focusing conjecture (QFC) for two-dimensional evaporating black holes. The QFC is closely related to the behavior of the generalized entropy -- the sum of the area entropy for a given co-dimension two surface and the entanglement entropy for quantum fields outside the area. In the context of the black hole evaporation, the entanglement entropy of the Hawking radiation is decreasing after the Page time, and therefore it is not obvious whether the QFC holds in the black hole evaporation process especially after the Page time. One of the present authors previously addressed this problem in a four-dimensional spherically symmetric dynamical black hole model and showed that the QFC is satisfied. However the background spacetime considered was approximated by the Vaidya metric, and quantum effects of matters in the semiclassical regime is not fully taken into consideration. It remains to be seen if the QFC in fact holds for exact solutions of the semiclassical Einstein equations. In this paper, we address this problem in a two-dimensional dynamical black hole of the Russo-Susskind-Thorlacius (RST) model, which allows us to solve the semiclassical equations of motion exactly. We first give a suitable definition of the quantum expansion in two-dimensions and then prove that the QFC is satisfied for evaporating black holes in the RST model with the island formation taken into account.

A note on no-hair properties of static black holes in four and higher dimensional spacetimes with cosmological constant

We study no-hair properties of static black holes in four and higher dimensional spacetimes with a cosmological constant. For the vanishing cosmological constant case, we show a no-hair theorem and also a no-short-hair theorem under certain conditions for the energy-momentum of matter fields. For the positive cosmological constant case, we discuss conditions for hairy static black holes to exist in terms of the energy density of matter fields evaluated at the black hole horizon and the cosmological horizon. For the negative cosmological constant case, we study conditions for hairy black holes by presenting a no-hair theorem in which the asymptotic structure is assumed to be determined by the true cosmological constant.

Symmetry breaking of $3$-dimensional AdS in holographic semiclassical gravity

We show that $3$-dimensional AdS spacetime can be semiclassically unstable due to strongly interacting quantum field effects. In our previous paper, we have pointed out the possibility of such an instability of AdS$_3$ by inspecting linear perturbations of the (covering space of) static BTZ black hole with AdS${}_4$ gravity dual in the context of holographic semiclassical problems. In the present paper, we further study this issue from thermodynamic viewpoint by constructing asymptotically AdS$_3$ semiclassical solutions and computing free energies of the solutions. We find two asymptotically AdS${}_3$ solutions to the semiclassical Einstein equations with non-vanishing source term: the one whose free energy is smaller than that of the BTZ with vanishing source term and the other whose free energy is smaller than that of the global AdS$_3$ with no horizon (thus manifestly zero-temperature background). The instability found in this paper implies the breakdown of the maximal symmetries of AdS$_3$, and its origin is different from the well-known semiclassical linear instability since our holographic semiclassical Einstein equations in $3$-dimensions do not involve higher order derivative terms.

Phase Structure of Quantum Improved Schwarzschild-(Anti)de Sitter Black Holes

We study the phase structure of quantum improved Schwarzschild-(A)dS black holes in asymptotically safe gravity. Our results confirm some of the well-known properties of quantum black holes. For example, the quantum effect provides a repulsive force in the core region near singularity which stabilizes the thermodynamically unstable small black holes, and also creates a zero temperature state with finite size. We suggest that this could be a candidate for dark matter. We find a new second order phase transition between small and large black holes for quantum improved Schwarzschild-Anti de Sitter black holes. We also discuss the black holes with different spatial topologies and find a notable duality.

Semiclassical Einstein equations from holography and boundary dynamics

In this paper, we consider how to formulate semiclassical problems in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence, based on the proposal of Compere and Marolf. Our prescription involves the effective action with self-action term for boundary dynamical fields, which can be viewed as imposing mixed boundary conditions for the gravity dual. We derive the semiclassical Einstein equations sourced by boundary CFT stress-energy tensor. Analyzing perturbations of the holographic semiclassical Einstein equations, we find a universal parameter $γ_d$ which controls the contribution from boundary CFTs and specifies dynamics on the AdS boundary. As a simple example, we examine the semiclassical Einstein equations in $3$-dimensions with $4$-dimensional AdS gravity dual, and show that the boundary BTZ black hole with vanishing expectation value of the stress-energy tensor becomes unstable due to the backreaction from quantum stress-energy tensor when the parameter $γ_d$ exceeds a certain critical value.

Flows of Rotating Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We investigate the attractor mechanism of five-dimensional extremal rotating black holes in Einstein gravity minimally coupled with a multiplet complex scalar. By imposing regularity on the horizon, we show that the only possible attractor value of the scalar field is zero in our setup and that the local geometry is determined by the Myers-Perry black hole solution. We numerically obtain the extremal AdS black hole solutions interpolating the near horizon geometry to the asymptotic AdS spacetime under the existence of a bare potential of the scalar field. The black hole energy and the angular momenta are discretized for the usual Dirichlet boundary condition. Under the general boundary condition, we also find hairy extremal AdS black holes in which the energy is smaller than that of the extremal Myers-Perry AdS black hole solution for the same angular momentum.

A stationary black hole must be axisymmetric in effective field theory

The black hole rigidity theorem asserts that a rotating stationary black hole must be axisymmetric. This theorem holds for General Relativity with suitable matter fields, in four or more dimensions. We show that the theorem can be extended to any diffeomorphism invariant theory of vacuum gravity, assuming that this is interpreted in the sense of effective field theory, with coupling constants determined in terms of a ``UV scale'', and that the black hole solution can locally be expanded as a power series in this scale.

Flows of Extremal Attractor Black Holes

We study flows of non-supersymmetric attractor black holes in the context of gauge/gravity correspondence. As our bulk theory, we consider the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton system with a single dilaton field coupled to two Maxwell fields and make a relevant deformation by adding a bare potential to the dilaton field. We find two types of extremal black hole solutions with attractor mechanism: The one smooth at the horizon and the other non-smooth. We show from both bulk and boundary theory perspective that the former is thermodynamically unstable, while the latter is stable.
