Running Newton Coupling, Scale Identification and Black Hole Thermodynamics

We discuss the quantum improvement of black hole solutions in the context of asymptotic safety. The Newton coupling in this formulation depends on an energy scale, which must be identified with some length scale in order to study physical consequences to black holes. However, no physical principle has so far been known for the identification. Here we propose that the consistency of the first law of thermodynamics is the principle that should determine physically sensible scale identification, at least close to the horizon. We show that this leads to a natural solution that the Newton coupling should be a function of the horizon area and find a universal formula for the quantum entropy, which agrees with the standard Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for constant Newton coupling, for Kerr black holes and other higher-dimensional black holes. This suggests that the Newton coupling is a function of the area near the horizon, and also away to infinity, where the quantum effects may not be so important.

The averaged null energy condition on holographic evaporating black holes

We examine the averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for strongly coupled fields, along the event horizon of an evaporating black hole by using the AdS/CFT duality. First, we consider a holographic model of a $3$-dimensional evaporating black hole with a perturbed 4-dimensional black droplet geometry as the bulk dual, and investigate how negative energy flux going into the boundary black hole horizon appears. We show that the ingoing negative energy flux always appears at the boundary black hole horizon when the horizon area decreases. Second, we test the ANEC in a holographic model of a $4$-dimensional asymptotically flat dynamical black hole, which describes the formation and subsequent evaporation of a spherically symmetric black hole. By applying the "bulk-no-shortcut principle", we show that the ANEC is always satisfied when the local null energy is averaged with a wieght function along the incomplete null geodesic on the event horizon from beginning of the formation to the final instant of the black hole evaporation. Our results indicate that the total ingoing negative energy flux is compensated by a large amount of positive energy flux in the early stage of the black hole formation.

Quantum improved charged black holes

We consider quantum effects of gravitational and electromagnetic fields in spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes in the asymptotic safety scenario. Introducing both the running gravitational and electromagnetic couplings from the renormalization group equations and applying a physically sensible scale identification scheme based on the Kretschmann scalar, we construct a quantum mechanically corrected, or quantum improved Reissner-Nordstrom metric. We study the global structure of the quantum improved geometry and show, in particular, that the central singularity is resolved, being generally replaced with a regular Minkowski-core, where the curvature tensor vanishes. Exploring cases with more general scale identifications, we further find that the space of quantum improved geometries is divided into two regions: one for geometries with a regular Minkowski-core and the other for those with a weak singularity at the center. At the boundary of the two regions, the geometry has either Minkowski-, de Sitter-, or anti-de Sitter(AdS)-core.

The first law of entanglement entropy in AdS black hole backgrounds

The first law for entanglement entropy in CFT in an odd-dimensional asymptotically AdS black hole is studied by using the AdS/CFT duality. The entropy of CFT considered here is due to the entanglement between two subsystems separated by the horizon of the AdS black hole, which itself is realized as the conformal boundary of a black droplet in even-dimensional global AdS bulk spacetime. In $(2+1)$-dimensional CFT, the first law is shown to be always satisfied by analyzing a class of metric perturbations of the exact solution of a $4$-dimensional black droplet. In $(4+1)$-dimensions, the first law for CFT is shown to hold under the Neumann boundary condition at a certain bulk hypersurface anchored to the conformal boundary of the boundary AdS black hole. From the boundary view point, this Neumann condition yields there being no energy flux across the boundary of the boundary AdS black hole. Furthermore, the asymptotic geometry of a $6$-dimensional small AdS black droplet is constructed as the gravity dual of our $(4+1)$-dimensional CFT, which exhibits a negative energy near the spatial infinity, as expected from vacuum polarization.

The averaged null energy conditions in even dimensional curved spacetimes from AdS/CFT duality

We consider averaged null energy conditions (ANEC) for strongly coupled quantum field theories in even (two and four) dimensional curved spacetimes by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle in the context of the AdS/CFT duality. In the same context but in odd-dimensions, the present authors previously derived a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC), which is a version of the ANEC with a certain weight function for conformal invariance. In even-dimensions, however, one has to deal with gravitational conformal anomalies, which make relevant formulas much more complicated than the odd-dimensional case. In two-dimensions, we derive the ANEC by applying the no-bulk-shortcut principle. In four-dimensions, we derive an inequality which essentially provides the lower-bound for the ANEC with a weight function. For this purpose, and also to get some geometric insights into gravitational conformal anomalies, we express the stress-energy formulas in terms of geometric quantities such as the expansions of boundary null geodesics and a quasi-local mass of the boundary geometry. We argue when the lowest bound is achieved and also discuss when the averaged value of the null energy can be negative, considering a simple example of a spatially compact universe with wormhole throat.

Conformally invariant averaged null energy condition from AdS/CFT

We study the compatibility of the AdS/CFT duality with the bulk and boundary causality, and derive a conformally invariant averaged null energy condition (CANEC) for quantum field theories in 3 and 5-dimensional curved boundaries. This is the generalization of the averaged null energy condition (ANEC) in Minkowski spacetime to curved boundaries, where null energy is averaged along the null line with appropriate weight for conformal invariance. For this purpose we take, as our guiding principle, the no-bulk-shortcut theorem of Gao and Wald, which essentially asserts that when going from one point to another on the boundary, one cannot take a "shortcut through the bulk". We also discuss the relationship between bulk vs boundary causality and the weak cosmic censorship.

Massive vector field perturbations on extremal and near-extremal static black holes

We discuss a new perturbation method to study the dynamics of massive vector fields on (near-)extremal static black hole spacetimes. We start with, as our background, a rather generic class of warped product metrics, and classify the field variables into the vector(axial)- and scalar(polar)-type components. On this generic background, we show that for the vector-type components, the Proca equation reduces to a single master equation, whereas the scalar-type components remain to be coupled. Then, focusing on the case of (near-)extremal static black holes in four-dimensions, we consider the near-horizon expansion of both the background geometry and massive vector field by a scaling parameter $λ$ with the leading-order geometry being the so called near-horizon geometry. We show that on the near-horizon geometry, thanks to its enhanced symmetry, the Proca equation for the scalar-type components also reduces to a set of two mutually decoupled homogeneous wave equations for two variables, plus a coupled equation through which the remaining variable is determined. Therefore, together with the vector-type master equation, we obtain the set of three decoupled master wave equations, which govern the three independent dynamical degrees of freedom of the massive vector field in four-dimensions. We further expand the geometry and massive vector field with respect to $λ$ and show that at each order, the Proca equation for the scalar-type components can reduce to a set of decoupled inhomogeneous wave equations whose source terms consist only of the lower-order variables, plus one coupled equation that determins the remaining variable. Therefore, if one solves the master equations on the leading-order near-horizon geometry, then in principle one can successively solve the Proca equation at any order.

Massive tensor field perturbations on extremal and near-extremal static black holes

We develop a new perturbation method to study the dynamics of massive tensor fields on extremal and near-extremal static black hole spacetimes in arbitrary dimensions. On such backgrounds, one can classify the components of massive tensor fields into the tensor, vector, and scalar-type components. For the tensor-type components, which arise only in higher dimensions, the massive tensor field equation reduces to a single master equation, whereas the vector and scalar-type components remain coupled. We consider the near-horizon expansion of both the geometry and the field variables with respect to the near-horizon scaling parameter. By doing so, we reduce, at each order of the expansion, the equations of motion for the vector and scalar-type components to a set of five mutually decoupled wave equations with source terms consisting only of the lower-order variables. Thus, together with the tensor-type master equation, we obtain the set of mutually decoupled equations at each order of the expansion that govern all dynamical degrees of freedom of the massive tensor field on the extremal and near-extremal static black hole background.

Achronal ANEC, Weak Cosmic Censorship, and AdS/CFT duality

We examine the achronal averaged null energy condition~(ANEC) for a class of conformal field theories~(CFT) at strong coupling in curved spacetime. By applying the AdS/CFT duality, we find holographic models which violate the achronal ANEC for $3+1$ and $4+1$-dimensional boundary theories. In our model, the bulk spacetime is an asymptotically AdS vacuum bubble solution with neither causality violation nor singularities. The conformal boundary of our bubble solution is asymptotically flat and is causally proper in the sense that a "fastest null geodesics" connecting any two points on the boundary must lie entirely on the boundary. We show that conversely, if the spacetime fails to have this causally proper nature, then there must be a naked singularity in the bulk.

Violation of the quantum null-energy condition in a holographic wormhole and infrared effects

We examine the quantum null energy condition (QNEC) for a $2+1$-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) at strong coupling in the background of a wormhole spacetime by employing the AdS/CFT correspondence. First, we numerically construct a novel $3+1$-dimensional vacuum AdS black hole solution with non-trivial topology, which is dual to a wormhole geometry connecting two flat universes. Although the bulk null energy condition (NEC) is not violated, the NEC for the holographic stress-energy tensor is violated near the wormhole throat. Next, we investigate the entanglement entropy for a half-space anchored to the boundary wormhole throat. We propose a natural prescription for regularizing the IR divergent part of the entanglement entropy and show that the QNEC is violated at the throat. This is the first counterexample to the QNEC, indicating that IR effects are crucial.

Black hole binaries: ergoregions, photon surfaces, wave scattering, and quasinormal modes

Closed photon orbits around isolated black holes are related to important aspects of black hole physics, such as strong lensing, absorption cross section of null particles and the way that black holes relax through quasinormal ringing. When two black holes are present -- such as during the inspiral and merger events of interest for gravitational-wave detectors -- the concept of closed photon orbits still exists, but its properties are basically unknown. With these applications in mind, we study here the closed photon orbits of two different static black hole binaries. The first one is the Majumdar-Papapetrou geometry describing two extremal, charged black holes in equilibrium, while the second one is the double sink solution of fluid dynamics, which describes (in a curved-spacetime language) two "dumb" holes. For the latter solution, we also characterize its dynamical response to external perturbations, and study how it relates to the photon orbits. In addition, we compute the ergoregion of such spacetime and show that it does not coincide with the event horizon.

Cosmic Censorship at Large D: Stability analysis in polarized AdS black branes (holes)

We test the cosmic censorship conjecture for a class of polarized AdS black branes (holes) in the Einstein-Maxwell theory at large number of dimensions $D$. We first derive a new set of effective equations describing the dynamics of the polarized black branes (holes) to leading order in the $1/D$ expansion. In the case of black branes, we construct `mushroom-type' static solutions from the effective equations, where a spherical horizon is connected with an asymptotic planar horizon through a `neck' which is locally black-string shape. We argue that this neck part (of black string) cannot be pinched off dynamically from the perspective of thermodynamical stability. In the case of black holes, we show that the equatorial plane on the spherical horizon cannot be sufficiently squashed unless the specific heat is positive. We also discuss that the solutions are stable against linear perturbation, agreeing with the thermodynamical argument. These results suggest that Gregory-Laflamme type instability does not occur at the neck, in favor of the cosmic censorship.

The Memory Effect for Particle Scattering in Even Spacetime Dimensions

We explicitly calculate the gravitational wave memory effect for classical point particle sources in linearized gravity off of an even dimensional Minkowski background. We show that there is no memory effect in $d>4$ dimensions, in agreement with the general analysis of Hollands, Ishibashi, and Wald (2016).

A holographic stress-energy tensor near the Cauchy horizon inside a rotating black hole

We investigate a stress-energy tensor for a CFT at strong coupling inside a small five-dimensional rotating Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta by using the holographic method. As a gravitational dual, we perturbatively construct a black droplet solution by applying the "derivative expansion" method, generalizing the work of Haddad (arXiv:1207.2305), and analytically compute the holographic stress-energy tensor for our solution. We find that the stress-energy tensor is finite at both the future and past outer (event) horizons, and that the energy density is negative just outside the event horizons due to the Hawking effect. Furthermore, we apply the holographic method to the question of quantum instability of the Cauchy horizon since, by construction, our black droplet solution also admits a Cauchy horizon inside. We analytically show that the null-null component of the holographic stress-energy tensor negatively diverges at the Cauchy horizon, suggesting that a singularity appears there, in favor of strong cosmic censorship.

Convex Functions and Spacetime Geometry

Convexity and convex functions play an important role in theoretical physics. To initiate a study of the possible uses of convex functions in General Relativity, we discuss the consequences of a spacetime $(M,g_{μν})$ or an initial data set $(Σ, h_{ij}, K_{ij})$ admitting a suitably defined convex function. We show how the existence of a convex function on a spacetime places restrictions on the properties of the spacetime geometry.

BMS Supertranslations and Memory in Four and Higher Dimensions

We consider the memory effect in even dimensional spacetimes of dimension $d \ge 4$ arising from a burst of gravitational radiation. When $d=4$, the natural frames in the stationary eras before and after the burst differ by the composition of a boost and supertranslation, and this supertranslation characterizes the "memory effect," i.e., the permanent displacement of test particles near infinity produced by the radiation burst. However, we show that when $d > 4$, this supertranslation and the corresponding memory effect vanish. Consequently, when $d >4$, it is natural to impose stronger asymptotic conditions at null infinity that reduce the asymptotic symmetry group to the Poincare group. Conversely, when $d=4$, the asymptotic symmetry group at null infinity must be taken to be the BMS group.

Holographic superfluid flows with a localized repulsive potential

We investigate a holographic model of superfluid flows with an external repulsive potential. When the strength of the potential is sufficiently weak, we analytically construct two steady superfluid flow solutions. As the strength of the potential is increased, the two solutions merge into a single critical solution at a critical strength, and then disappear above the critical value, as predicted by a saddle-node bifurcation theory. We also analyze the spectral function of fluctuations around the solutions under a certain decoupling approximation.

Superradiant instabilities of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes

We study the linear stability of asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes in general relativity in spacetime dimension $d\ge4$. Our approach is an adaptation of the general framework of Hollands and Wald, which gives a stability criterion in terms of the sign of the canonical energy, $\mathcal{E}$. The general framework was originally formulated for static or stationary and axisymmetric black holes in the asymptotically flat case, and the stability analysis for that case applies only to axisymmetric perturbations. However, in the asymptotically anti-de Sitter case, the stability analysis requires only that the black hole have a single Killing field normal to the horizon and there are no restrictions on the perturbations (apart from smoothness and appropriate behavior at infinity). For an asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole, we define an ergoregion to be a region where the horizon Killing field is spacelike; such a region, if present, would normally occur near infinity. We show that for black holes with ergoregions, initial data can be constructed such that $\mathcal{E}<0$, so all such black holes are unstable. To obtain such initial data, we first construct an approximate solution to the constraint equations using the WKB method, and then we use the Corvino-Schoen technique to obtain an exact solution. We also discuss the case of charged asymptotically anti-de Sitter black holes with generalized ergoregions.
