Search for Sub-GeV Axion-Like Particles at EBES Pilot Run Using 4 GeV Positron Beam at KEK LINAC

We report the results of a search for sub-GeV axion-like particles (ALPs) using pilot run data from the Electron Beam-dump Experiment at KEK LINAC Switching Yard 3 (EBES). The data were collected in December 2023 with a 4 GeV positron beam and correspond to $1.3\times10^{14}$ positrons on target. In the pilot run setup, a tungsten beam dump and a single PbO calorimeter were used. We consider ALP production via the Primakoff process induced by bremsstrahlung photons in the beam dump, followed by the decay $a\toγγ$. The background was estimated with a data-driven method, and a signal region was defined such that the expected background yield is below 0.1 events. No events were observed after unblinding. Upper limits at the 90% confidence level were derived in the ALP mass-coupling plane, extending the experimental coverage into a region of parameter space not explored by previous searches.

Muon identification with Deep Neural Network in the Belle II K-Long and Muon detector

Muon identification is crucial for elementary particle physics experiments. At the Belle II experiment, muons and pions with momenta greater than 0.7 GeV/c are distinguished by their penetration ability through the $K_L$ and Muon (KLM) sub-detector, which is the outermost sub-detector of Belle II. In this paper, we first discuss the possible room for $μ/π$ identification performance improvement and then present a new method based on Deep Neural Network (DNN). This DNN model utilizes the KLM hit pattern variables as the input and thus can digest the penetration information better than the current algorithm. We test the new method in simulation and find that the pion fake rate (specificity) is reduced from 4.1% to 1.6% at a muon efficiency (recall) of 90%.

Belle II observation prospects for axion-like particle production from $B$ meson annihilation decay

We investigate a new production mechanism of axion-like particle (ALP) from $B$ meson annihilation decays and its observation potential at the Belle and Belle II experiments. This mechanism allows for the production of ALP from $B$ meson decays in association with a large variety of mesons. In this article, we first estimate the branching ratios of such processes with a perturbative QCD method. Focussing on the most promising $B \to h a^{\prime}$ ($h=K^\pm, π^\pm, D^0$ and $D_s$) channels, we perform sensitivity studies for $a^{\prime}$ decaying invisibly or into diphoton with Belle and Belle II experiments.

Snowmass White Paper: Belle II physics reach and plans for the next decade and beyond

Belle II is an experiment operating at the intensity frontier. Over the next decades, it will record the decay of billions of bottom mesons, charm hadrons, and tau leptons produced in 10 GeV electron-positron collisions at the SuperKEKB high-luminosity collider at KEK. These data, collected in low-background and kinematically known conditions, will allow us to measure hundreds of parameters that test the standard model (SM) and probe for the existence of new particles, at mass scales orders of magnitudes higher than those studied at the energy frontier. We project our sensitivities for measurements that are of primary relevance and where Belle II will be unique or world leading for data corresponding to 1 to 50 ab$^{-1}$. Belle II will uniquely probe non-SM contributions in sensitive $b \to q\bar q s$ decays and charmless $b \to q\bar q d(u)$ decays, semileptonic $b \to s ν\barν$ and $s τ^+ τ^-$ decays, fully leptonic $b \to \ell ν$ decays, and select $c \to u$ processes. Belle II will lead exploration of non-SM physics in $b \to c τν$ and $b \to s γ$ decays and will most precisely determine the quark-mixing parameters $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$. Belle II will measure many parameters in $τ$ physics to precisions that will be world leading for the foreseeable future, including the electric and magnetic dipole moments, branching fractions for charged-lepton-flavor-violating decays, and quantities that test lepton-flavor universality. Belle II will perform unique searches for dark-sector particles with masses in the MeV-GeV range. We will also pursue a broad spectroscopy program for conventional and multiquark $c \bar c$ and $b \bar b$ states and provide essential inputs to sharpen the interpretation of muon magnetic-anomaly results. Our exploration of uncharted regions of non-SM parameter space with high precision will reveal non-SM particles or set stringent constraints on their existence, guiding future endeavors.

Search for axion-like particles with electron and positron beams at KEK Linac

We propose a fixed-target experiment to search for Axion-like particles (ALPs) coupling to photons, which utilizes electron and positron beams available at KEK Linac. The sensitivity to ALP is evaluated for two shielding setups in conjunction with other beam dump experiments, fixed-target experiments, and $e^+e^-$ collider experiments. This study shows that the two setups can explore the gap between the search region excluded by the beam dump experiments and the $e^+e^-$ collider experiments.

Weak Value Amplification in High Energy Physics: A Case Study for Precision Measurement of CP Violation in B Meson Decays

The technique of weak value amplification, proposed by Aharonov et al. in 1988, has been applied for various fields of physics for the purpose of precision measurement, which is made possible by exploiting the freedom of `postselection' specifying actively the final state in the physical process. Here we report for the first time the feasibility of utilizing the technique of weak value amplification in high energy particle physics, especially in measuring the CP-violating parameters in B meson decays, where the effective lifetime of the decay mode is expected to be prolonged statistically due to the postselection. Our analysis shows that, when adopted in the Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB collider, the effective lifetime may be prolonged up to 2.6 times, and that the measurement precision of the CP-violating parameters will also be improved by its effect.

Measurement of the Higgs boson mass and $e^+e^- \to ZH$ cross section using $Z \to μ^+μ^-$ and $Z \to e^+ e^-$ at the ILC

This paper presents a full simulation study of the measurement of the production cross section ($σ_{\mathrm{ZH}}$) of the Higgsstrahlung process $\mathrm{e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow ZH}$ and the Higgs boson mass ($M_{\mathrm{H}}$) at the International Linear Collider (ILC), using events in which a Higgs boson recoils against a Z boson decaying into a pair of muons or electrons. The analysis is carried out for three center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 250, 350, and 500 GeV, and two beam polarizations $\mathrm{e_{L}^{-}e_{R}^{+}}$ and $\mathrm{e_{R}^{-}e_{L}^{+}}$, for which the polarizations of $\mathrm{e^{-}}$ and $\mathrm{e^{+}}$ are $\left(P\mathrm{e^{-}},P\mathrm{e^{+}}\right)$ =($-$80\%, +30\%) and (+80\%, $-$30\%), respectively. Assuming an integrated luminosity of 250 $\mathrm{fb^{-1}}$ for each beam polarization at $\sqrt{s}$ = 250 GeV, where the best lepton momentum resolution is obtainable, $σ_{\mathrm{ZH}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{H}}$ can be determined with a precision of 2.5\% and 37 MeV for $\mathrm{e_{L}^{-}e_{R}^{+}}$ and 2.9\% and 41 MeV for $\mathrm{e_{R}^{-}e_{L}^{+}}$, respectively. Regarding a 20 year ILC physics program, the expected precisions for the $\mathrm{HZZ}$ coupling and $M_{\mathrm{H}}$ are estimated to be 0.4\% and 14 MeV, respectively. The event selection is designed to optimize the precisions of $σ_{\mathrm{ZH}}$ and $M_{\mathrm{H}}$ while minimizing the bias on the measured $σ_{\mathrm{ZH}}$ due to discrepancy in signal efficiencies among Higgs decay modes. For the first time, model independence has been demonstrated to a sub-percent level for the $σ_{\mathrm{ZH}}$ measurement at each of the three center-of-mass energies. The results presented show the impact of center-of-mass energy and beam polarization on the evaluated precisons and serve as a benchmark for the planning of the ILC run scenario.

Search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson at the ILC

The existence of dark matter has been established in astrophysics. However, there are no dark matter candidates in the Standard Model~(SM). If the dark matter particles or their mediator can not interact with SM fermions or gauge bosons, the Higgs boson is the only portal to the dark matter. We present a simulation study to search for invisible decays of the Higgs boson at the ILC with the ILD detector.

Summary of the CKM 2016 working group on rare decays

Rare $B$, $D$, and $K$ decays offer unique opportunities to probe for evidence of new particles from physics beyond the Standard Model at mass scales extending from the electroweak scale to well above those directly accessible at the LHC. We review a selection of theoretical and experimental results on rare $B$, $D$, and $K$ decays illustrating the progress made during the past two years.

Radiation tolerance of FPCCD vertex detector for the ILC

The Fine Pixel CCD (FPCCD) is one of the candidate sensor technologies for the ILC vertex detector. The vertex detector is located near the interaction point, thus high radiation tolerance is required. Charge transfer efficiency of CCD is degraded by radiation damage which makes traps in pixels. We measured charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) of a neutron irradiated FPCCD prototype. We observed a degradation of CTI compared with non-irradiated CCD. To improve the CTI of irradiated CCD, we performed the fat-zero charge injection to fill the traps. In this paper, we report a status of CTI improvement.

TID-Effect Compensation and Sensor-Circuit Cross-Talk Suppression in Double-SOI Devices

We are developing double silicon-on-insulator (DSOI) pixel sensors for various applications such as for high-energy experiments. The performance of DSOI devices has been evaluated including total ionization damage (TID) effect compensation in transistors using a test-element-group (TEG) up to 2 MGy and in integration-type sensors up to 100 kGy. In this article, successful TID compensation in a pixel-ASD-readout-circuit is shown up to 100 kGy for the application of DSOI to counting-type sensors. The cross-talk suppression in DSOI is being evaluated. These results encourage us that DSOI sensors are applicable to future high-energy experiments such as the BELLE-II experiment or the ILC experiment.

Summary of the CKM 2014 working group on rare decays

Rare flavour changing neutral current decays of strange, charm and beauty hadrons have been instrumental in building up a picture of flavour in the Standard Model. Increasingly precise measurements of these decays allow to search for deviations from predictions of the Standard Model that would be associated to contributions from new particles that might arise in extensions of the Standard Model. In this summary, an overview of recent experimental results and theoretical predictions is given. The new physics sensitivity and prospects for the different observables is also addressed.

Study of top quark pair production near threshold at the ILC

We report on a study of top pair production at the International Linear Collider (ILC) around center of mass energy (E$_{\rm CM}$) = 350 GeV using an ILD detector simulator based on the Detailed Baseline Design (DBD) configuration. Here we will report on a result of 6-Jet final state, $t\ bar{t} \rightarrow bWbW \rightarrow bqqbqq$. A result for the 4-Jet final state, $t\ bar{t} \rightarrow bWbW \rightarrow bqqblν$, which has almost the same statics as that of the 6-Jet final state will be included in the future. For an energy scan of 11 center of mass energy points (340 - 350GeV) and two beam polarization combinations (P($e^+,\ e^-$) = ($\pm$0.3, $\mp$0.8)) with 10 fb$^{-1}$ each, the statistical errors on the top quark Yukawa coupling, its mass and width are estimated. The results are $δy_t$ = 4.2%, $δm_t$ = 16 MeV in potential subtracted scheme (PS), and $δΓ_t$ = 21 MeV.

Study of Tracking and Flavor Tagging with FPCCD Vertex Detector

One of the major physics goals at the ILC is the precise measurement of the Higgs coupling constants to b-quarks and c-quarks. To achieve this measurement, we need a high-performance vertex detector leading to precise flavor tagging. For this purpose, we are developing the Fine Pixel CCD (FPCCD) vertex detector. In this paper, we will report on the development status of FPCCDTrackFinder, a new track finder improving tracking efficiency, especially in the low $p_t$ region, and an evaluation result of the flavor tagging performance with FPCCDTrackFinder in the FPCCD vertex detector.

Penguin-mediated B Decays at Belle

We report on the results of penguin-mediated B decays at the Belle experiment. The analyses were based on approximately 32 million $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ storage ring. The $b \to s γ$ transition was studied through exclusive decays: $B \to K^{*} γ$, $B^0 \to K_{2}^{*}(1430)^0 γ$, $B^+ \to K^+π^-π^- γ$, $B^+ \to K^{*0} π^+ γ$ and $B^+ \to K^+ρ^0 γ$. The $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ transition was searched through both exclusive decays, $B \to K^{(*)} \ell^+ \ell^-$, and inclusive decay, $B \to X_{s} \ell^+ \ell^-$. We observed the decay processes $B^+ \to K^+π^+π^- γ$ and $B \to K \ell^+ \ell^-$ for the first time.
