Selective Categories and Linear Canonical Relations

A construction of Wehrheim and Woodward circumvents the problem that compositions of smooth canonical relations are not always smooth, building a category suitable for functorial quantization. To apply their construction to more examples, we introduce a notion of highly selective category, in which only certain morphisms and certain pairs of these morphisms are "good". We then apply this notion to the category $\mathbf{SLREL}$ of linear canonical relations and the result ${\rm WW}(\mathbf{SLREL})$ of our version of the WW construction, identifying the morphisms in the latter with pairs $(L,k)$ consisting of a linear canonical relation and a nonnegative integer. We put a topology on this category of indexed linear canonical relations for which composition is continuous, unlike the composition in $\mathbf{SLREL}$ itself. Subsequent papers will consider this category from the viewpoint of derived geometry and will concern quantum counterparts.

Coisotropic Pairs

We give two equivalent sets of invariants which classify pairs of coisotropic subspaces of a finite-dimensional symplectic vector space. We identify five elementary types of coisotropic pairs and show that any coisotropic pair decomposes in an appropriate sense as the direct sum of coisotropic pairs of elementary type.

Toward Early-Warning Detection of Gravitational Waves from Compact Binary Coalescence

Rapid detection of compact binary coalescence (CBC) with a network of advanced gravitational-wave detectors will offer a unique opportunity for multi-messenger astronomy. Prompt detection alerts for the astronomical community might make it possible to observe the onset of electromagnetic emission from (CBC). We demonstrate a computationally practical filtering strategy that could produce early-warning triggers before gravitational radiation from the final merger has arrived at the detectors.

Integration of Lie Algebroid Comorphisms

We show that the path construction integration of Lie algebroids by Lie groupoids is an actual equivalence from the category of integrable Lie algebroids and complete Lie algebroid comorphisms to the category of source 1-connected Lie groupoids and Lie groupoid comorphisms. This allows us to construct an actual symplectization functor in Poisson geometry. We include examples to show that the integrability of comorphisms and Poisson maps may not hold in the absence of a completeness assumption.

The Maslov cycle as a Legendre singularity and projection of a wavefront set

A Maslov cycle is a singular variety in the lagrangian grassmannian L(V) of a symplectic vector space V consisting of all lagrangian subspaces having nonzero intersection with a fixed one. Givental has shown that a Maslov cycle is a Legendre singularity, i.e. the projection of a smooth conic lagrangian submanifold S in the cotangent bundle of L(V). We show here that S is the wavefront set of a Fourier integral distribution which is "evaluation at 0 of the quantizations".

Groupoid symmetry and constraints in general relativity

When the vacuum Einstein equations are cast in the form of hamiltonian evolution equations, the initial data lie in the cotangent bundle of the manifold MΣ of riemannian metrics on a Cauchy hypersurface Σ. As in every lagrangian field theory with symmetries, the initial data must satisfy constraints. But, unlike those of gauge theories, the constraints of general relativity do not arise as momenta of any hamiltonian group action. In this paper, we show that the bracket relations among the constraints of general relativity are identical to the bracket relations in the Lie algebroid of a groupoid consisting of diffeomorphisms between space-like hypersurfaces in spacetimes. A direct connection is still missing between the constraints themselves, whose definition is closely related to the Einstein equations, and our groupoid, in which the Einstein equations play no role at all. We discuss some of the difficulties involved in making such a connection.

Symplectic Microgeometry III: Monoids

We show that the category of Poisson manifolds and Poisson maps, the category of symplectic microgroupoids and lagrangian submicrogroupoids (as morphisms), and the category of monoids and monoid morphisms in the microsymplectic category are equivalent symmetric monoidal categories.

Symplectic Microgeometry II: Generating functions

We adapt the notion of generating functions for lagrangian submanifolds to symplectic microgeometry. We show that a symplectic micromorphism always admits a global generating function. As an application, we describe hamiltonian flows as special symplectic micromorphisms whose local generating functions are the solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. We obtain a purely categorical formulation of the temporal evolution in classical mechanics.

A note on the Wehrheim-Woodward category

Wehrheim and Woodward have shown how to embed all the canonical relations between symplectic manifolds into a category in which the composition is the usual one when transversality and embedding assumptions are satisfied. A morphism in their category is an equivalence class of composable sequences of canonical relations, with composition given by concatenation. In this note, we show that every such morphism is represented by a sequence consisting of just two relations, one of them a reduction and the other a coreduction.

Symplectic Categories

Quantization problems suggest that the category of symplectic manifolds and symplectomorphisms be augmented by the inclusion of canonical relations as morphisms. These relations compose well when a transversality condition is satisfied, but the failure of the most general compositions to be smooth manifolds means that the canonical relations do not comprise the morphisms of a category. We discuss several existing and potential remedies to the nontransversality problem. Some of these involve restriction to classes of lagrangian submanifolds for which the transversality property automatically holds. Others involve allowing lagrangian "objects" more general than submanifolds.

Symplectic Microgeometry I: Micromorphisms

We introduce the notion of symplectic microfolds and symplectic micromorphisms between them. They form a monoidal category, which is a version of the "category" of symplectic manifolds and canonical relations obtained by localizing them around lagrangian submanifolds in the spirit of Milnor's microbundles.

The volume of a differentiable stack

We extend the notion of the cardinality of a discrete groupoid (equal to the Euler characteristic of the corresponding discrete orbifold) to the setting of Lie groupoids. Since this quantity is an invariant under equivalence of groupoids, we call it the volume of the associated stack rather than of the groupoid itself. Since there is no natural measure in the smooth case like the counting measure in the discrete case, we need extra data to define the volume. This data has the form of an invariant section of a natural line bundle over the groupoid. Sections of a square root of this line bundle constitute an "intrinsic Hilbert space" of the stack.

Diagnosing space telescope misalignment and jitter using stellar images

Accurate knowledge of the telescope's point spread function (PSF) is essential for the weak gravitational lensing measurements that hold great promise for cosmological constraints. For space telescopes, the PSF may vary with time due to thermal drifts in the telescope structure, and/or due to jitter in the spacecraft pointing (ground-based telescopes have additional sources of variation). We describe and simulate a procedure for using the images of the stars in each exposure to determine the misalignment and jitter parameters, and reconstruct the PSF at any point in that exposure's field of view. The simulation uses the design of the SNAP (http://snap.lbl.gov) telescope. Stellar-image data in a typical exposure determines secondary-mirror positions as precisely as $20 {\rm nm}$. The PSF ellipticities and size, which are the quantities of interest for weak lensing are determined to $4.0 \times 10^{-4}$ and $2.2 \times 10^{-4}$ accuracies respectively in each exposure, sufficient to meet weak-lensing requirements. We show that, for the case of a space telescope, the PSF estimation errors scale inversely with the square root of the total number of photons collected from all the usable stars in the exposure.

Modular classes of Lie algebroid morphisms

We study the behavior of the modular class of a Lie algebroid under general Lie algebroid morphisms by introducing the relative modular class. We investigate the modular classes of pull-back morphisms and of base-preserving morphisms associated to Lie algebroid extensions. We also define generalized morphisms, including Morita equivalences, that act on the 1-cohomology, and observe that the relative modular class is a coboundary on the category of Lie algebroids and generalized morphisms with values in the 1-cohomology.

Cotangent Microbundle Category, I

We define a local version of the extended symplectic category, the cotangent microbundle category, MiC, which turns out to be a true monoidal category. We show that a monoid in this category induces a Poisson manifold together with the local symplectic groupoid integrating it. Moreover, we prove that monoid morphisms produce Poisson maps between the induced Poisson manifolds in a functorial way. This gives a functor between the category of monoids in MiC and the category of Poisson manifolds and Poisson maps. Conversely, the semi-classical part of the Kontsevich star-product associated to a real-analytic Poisson structure on an open subset of R^n produces a monoid in MiC.

Hopfish structure and modules over irrational rotation algebras

Inspired by the group structure on $S^1/ \bbZ$, we introduce a weak hopfish structure on an irrational rotation algebra $A$ of finite Fourier series. We consider a class of simple $A$-modules defined by invertible elements, and we compute the tensor product between these modules defined by the hopfish structure. This class of simple modules turns out to generate an interesting commutative unital ring.
