Generation of a stable low-frequency squeezed vacuum field with periodically-poled KTiOPO$_4$ at 1064 nm

We report on the generation of a stable continuous-wave low-frequency squeezed vacuum field with a squeezing level of $3.8\pm0.1$ dB at 1064 nm, the wavelength at which laser interferometers for gravitational wave (GW) detection operate, using periodically poled KTiOPO$_4$ (PPKTP) in a sub-threshold optical parametric oscillator. PPKTP has the advantages of higher nonlinearity, smaller intra-crystal and pump-induced seed absorption, user-specified parametric down-conversion temperature, wider temperature tuning range, and lower susceptibility to thermal lensing over alternative nonlinear materials such as MgO doped or periodically poled LiNbO$_3$, and is, therefore, an excellent material for generation of squeezed vacuum fields for application to laser interferometers for GW detection.

Group-like objects in Poisson geometry and algebra

A group, defined as set with associative multiplication and inverse, is a natural structure describing the symmetry of a space. The concept of group generalizes to group objects internal to other categories than sets. But there are yet more general objects that can still be thought of as groups in many ways, such as quantum groups. We explain some of the generalizations of groups which arise in Poisson geometry and quantization: the germ of a topological group, Poisson Lie groups, rigid monoidal structures on symplectic realizations, groupoids, 2-groups, stacky Lie groups, and hopfish algebras.

Hopfish algebras

We introduce a notion of "hopfish algebra" structure on an associative algebra, allowing the structure morphisms (coproduct, counit, antipode) to be bimodules rather than algebra homomorphisms. We prove that quasi-Hopf algebras are examples of hopfish algebras. We find that a hopfish structure on the commutative algebra of functions on a finite set G is closely related to a "hypergroupoid" structure on G. The Morita theory of hopfish algebras is also discussed.

Measurement of Optical Response of a Detuned Resonant Sideband Extraction Interferometer

We report on the optical response of a suspended-mass detuned resonant sideband extraction (RSE) interferometer with power recycling. The purpose of the detuned RSE configuration is to manipulate and optimize the optical response of the interferometer to differential displacements (induced by gravitational waves) as a function of frequency, independently of other parameters of the interferometer. The design of our interferometer results in an optical gain with two peaks: an RSE optical resonance at around 4 kHz and a radiation pressure induced optical spring at around 41 Hz. We have developed a reliable procedure for acquiring lock and establishing the desired optical configuration. In this configuration, we have measured the optical response to differential displacement and found good agreement with predictions at both resonances and all other relevant frequencies. These results build confidence in both the theory and practical implementation of the more complex optical configuration being planned for Advanced LIGO.

Poisson geometry and deformation quantization near a pseudoconvex boundary

Let X be a complex manifold with strongly pseudoconvex boundary M. If u is a defining function for M, then -log u is plurisubharmonic on a neighborhood of M in X, and the (real) 2-form s = i \del \delbar(-log u) is a symplectic structure on the complement of M in a neighborhood in X of M; it blows up along M. The Poisson structure obtained by inverting s extends smoothly across M and determines a contact structure on M which is the same as the one induced by the complex structure. When M is compact, the Poisson structure near M is completely determined up to isomorphism by the contact structure on M. In addition, when -log u is plurisubharmonic throughout X, and X is compact, bidifferential operators constructed by Englis for the Berezin-Toeplitz deformation quantization of X are smooth up to the boundary. The proofs use a complex Lie algebroid determined by the CR structure on M, along with some ideas of Epstein, Melrose, and Mendoza concerning manifolds with contact boundary.

The Integration Problem for Complex Lie Algebroids

A complex Lie algebroid is a complex vector bundle over a smooth (real) manifold M with a bracket on sections and an anchor to the complexified tangent bundle of M which satisfy the usual Lie algebroid axioms. A proposal is made here to integrate analytic complex Lie algebroids by using analytic continuation to a complexification of M and integration to a holomorphic groupoid. A collection of diverse examples reveal that the holomorphic stacks presented by these groupoids tend to coincide with known objects associated to structures in complex geometry. This suggests that the object integrating a complex Lie algebroid should be a holomorphic stack.

Relative modular classes of Lie algebroids

We study the relative modular classes of Lie algebroids, and we determine their relationship with the modular classes of Lie algebroids with a twisted Poisson structure.

Variations on Prequantization

We extend known prequantization procedures for Poisson and presymplectic manifolds by defining the prequantization of a Dirac manifold P as a principal U(1)-bundle Q with a compatible Dirac-Jacobi structure. We study the action of Poisson algebras of admissible functions on P on various spaces of locally (with respect to P) defined functions on Q, via hamiltonian vector fields. Finally, guided by examples arising in complex analysis and contact geometry, we propose an extension of the notion of prequantization in which the action of U(1) on Q is permitted to have some fixed points.

Poisson geometry and Morita equivalence

These notes discuss various aspect of the ``representation theory'' of Poisson manifolds, with focus on Morita equivalence and Picard groups. We give a brief introduction to Poisson geometry (including Dirac and twisted Poisson structures) and algebraic Morita theory before presenting the geometric Morita theory of Poisson manifolds. We also point out the connections with the theory of symplectic groupoids and hamiltonian actions.

The Maslov Gerbe

Let Lag(E) be the grassmannian of lagrangian subspaces of a complex symplectic vector space E. We construct a Maslov class which generates the second integral cohomology of Lag(E), and we show that its mod 2 reduction is the characteristic class of a flat gerbe with structure group Z_2. We explain the relation of this gerbe to the well-known flat Maslov line bundle with structure group Z_4 over the real lagrangian grassmannian, whose characteristic class is the mod 4 reduction of the real Maslov class.

Picard groups in Poisson geometry

We study isomorphism classes of symplectic dual pairs P <- S -> P-, where P is an integrable Poisson manifold, S is symplectic, and the two maps are complete, surjective Poisson submersions with connected and simply-connected fibres. For fixed P, these Morita self-equivalences of P form a group Pic(P) under a natural ``tensor product'' operation. We discuss this group in several examples and study variants of this construction for rings (the origin of the notion of Picard group), Lie groupoids, and symplectic groupoids.

Quantization and Morita equivalence for constant Dirac structures on tori

We define a C*-algebraic quantization of constant Dirac structures on tori, which extends the standard quantization of Poisson structures. We prove that Dirac structures in the same orbit of a natural action of O(n,n|Z) give rise to Morita equivalent algebras, completing and extending a theorem of Rieffel and Schwarz.

The Geometry of Momentum

Although the idea of the momentum map associated with a symplectic action of a group is already contained in work of Lie, the geometry of momentum maps was not studied extensively until the 1960's. Centering around the relation between symmetries and conserved quantities, the study of momentum maps was very much alive at the end of the 20th century and continues to this day, with the creation of new notions of symmetry. A uniform framework for all these momentum maps is still to be found; groupoids should play an important role in such a framework.

Linearization of Regular Proper Groupoids

Let G be a Lie groupoid over M such that the target-source map from G to M x M is proper. We show that, if O is an orbit of finite type (i.e. which admits a proper function with finitely many critical points), then the restriction G|U of G to some neighborhood U of O in M is isomorphic to a similar restriction of the action groupoid for the linear action of the transitive groupoid G|O on the normal bundle NO. The proof uses a deformation argument based on a cohomology vanishing theorem, along with a slice theorem which is derived from a new result on submersions with a fibre of finite type.

Poisson geometry with a 3-form background

We study a modification of Poisson geometry by a closed 3-form. Just as for ordinary Poisson structures, these "twisted" Poisson structures are conveniently described as Dirac structures in suitable Courant algebroids. The additive group of 2-forms acts on twisted Poisson structures and permits them to be seen as glued from ordinary Poisson structures defined on local patches. We conclude with remarks on deformation quantization and twisted symplectic groupoids.

Poisson Geometry of Discrete Series Orbits, and Momentum Convexity for Noncompact Group Actions

The main result of this paper is a convexity theorem for momentum mappings of certain hamiltonian actions of noncompact semisimple Lie groups. The image is required to fall within a certain open subset D of the (dual of the) Lie algebra, and the momentum map itself is required to be proper as a map to D. The set D corresponds roughly, via the orbit method, to the discrete series of representations of the group, Much of the paper is devoted to the study of D itself, which consists of the Lie algebra elements which have compact centralizer. When the group is Sp(2n), these elements are the ones which are called "strongly stable" in the theory of linear hamiltonian dynamical systems, and our results may be seen as a generalization of some of that theory to arbitrary semisimple Lie groups. As an application, we prove a new convexity theorem for the frequency sets of sums of positive definite hamiltonians with prescribed frequencies.

Fixed points of analytic actions of supersoluble Lie groups on compact surfaces

We show that every real analytic action of a connected supersoluble Lie group on a compact surface with nonzero Euler characteristic has a fixed point. This implies that E. Lima's fixed point free $C^{\infty}$ action on $S^2$ of the affine group of the line cannot be approximated by analytic actions. An example is given of an analytic, fixed point free action on $S^2$ of a solvable group that is not supersoluble.
