Leibniz Algebras, Courant Algebroids, and Multiplications on Reductive Homogeneous Spaces

We show that the skew-symmetrized product on every Leibniz algebra E can be realized on a reductive complement to a subalgebra in a Lie algebra. As a consequence, we construct a nonassociative multiplication on E which, when E is a Lie algebra, is derived from the integrated adjoint representation. We apply this construction to realize the bracket operations on the sections of Courant algebroids and on the ``omni-Lie algebras'' recently introduced by the second author.

Omni-Lie Algebras

We show that the space R^n x gl(n,R) with a certain antisymmetric bracket operation contains all n-dimensional Lie algebras. The bracket does not satisfy the Jacobi identity, but it does satisfy it for subalgebras which are isotropic under a certain symmetric bilinear form with values in R^n. We ask what the corresponding "group-like" object should be. The bracket may be obtained by linearizing at a point the bracket on TM + T*M introduced by T. Courant for the definition of Dirac structures, a notion which encompasses Poisson structures, closed 2-forms, and foliations.

Linearization Problems for Lie Algebroids and Lie Groupoids

In this survey, we discuss a series of linearization problems--for Poisson structures, Lie algebroids, and Lie groupoids. The last problem involves a conjecture on the structure of proper groupoids. Attempting to prove this by the method of averaging leads to problems concerning almost actions of compact groups and almost invariant submanifolds for compact group actions. The paper ends with a discussion of possible extensions of the convexity theorems for momentum maps of hamiltonian actions of compact groups.

Almost invariant submanifolds for compact group actions

We define a C^1 distance between submanifolds of a riemannian manifold M and show that, if a compact submanifold N is not moved too much under the isometric action of a compact group G, there is a G-invariant submanifold C^1-close to N. The proof involves a procedure of averaging nearby submanifolds of riemannian manifolds in a symmetric way. The procedure combines averaging techniques of Cartan, Grove/Karcher, and de la Harpe/Karoubi with Whitney's idea of realizing submanifolds as zeros of sections of extended normal bundles.

Some questions about the index of quantized contact transformations

An index formula is proposed for contact transformations between contact manifolds equipped with CR structures or with fillings by symplectic manifolds. The formula generalizes the Atiyah-Singer formula and gives a conjectured formula for the index of Fourier integral operators, as well as Epstein's relative index for CR structures.

Courant Algebroids and Strongly Homotopy Lie Algebras

Courant algebroids are structures which include as examples the doubles of Lie bialgebras and the direct sum of tangent and cotangent bundles with the bracket introduced by T. Courant for the study of Dirac structures. Within the category of Courant algebroids one can construct the doubles of Lie bialgebroids, the infinitesimal objects for Poisson groupoids. We show that Courant algebroids can be considered as strongly homotopy Lie algebras.

Hochschild cohomology and characteristic classes for star-products

We show that the Hochschild cohomology of the algebra obtained by formal deformation quantization on a symplectic manifold is isomorphic to the formal series with coefficients in the de Rham cohomology of the manifold. The cohomology class obtained by differentiating the star-product with respect to the deformation parameter is seen to be closely related to the characteristic class of the quantization. A fundamental role in the analysis is played by ``quantum Liouville operators,'' which rescale the deformation parameter in the same way in which Liouville vector fields scale the Poisson structure (or the units of action). Several examples are given.

Manin Triples for Lie Bialgebroids

In his study of Dirac structures, a notion which includes both Poisson structures and closed 2-forms, T. Courant introduced a bracket on the direct sum of vector fields and 1-forms. This bracket does not satisfy the Jacobi identity except on certain subspaces. In this paper we systematize the properties of this bracket in the definition of a Courant algebroid. This structure on a vector bundle $E\rightarrow M$, consists of an antisymmetric bracket on the sections of $E$ whose ``Jacobi anomaly'' has an explicit expression in terms of a bundle map $E\rightarrow TM$ and a field of symmetric bilinear forms on $E$. When $M$ is a point, the definition reduces to that of a Lie algebra carrying an invariant nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form. For any Lie bialgebroid $(A,A^{*})$ over $M$ (a notion defined by Mackenzie and Xu), there is a natural Courant algebroid structure on $A\oplus A^{*}$ which is the Drinfel'd double of a Lie bialgebra when $M$ is a point. Conversely, if $A$ and $A^*$ are complementary isotropic subbundles of a Courant algebroid $E$, closed under the bracket (such a bundle, with dimension half that of $E$, is called a Dirac structure), there is a natural Lie bialgebroid structure on $(A,A^{*})$ whose double is isomorphic to $E$. The theory of Manin triples is thereby extended from Lie algebras to Lie algebroids. Our work gives a new approach to bihamiltonian structures and a new way of combining two Poisson structures to obtain a third one. We also take some tentative steps toward generalizing Drinfel'd's theory of Poisson homogeneous spaces from groups to groupoids.

Pseudodifferential operators on differential groupoids

We construct an algebra of pseudodifferential operators on each groupoid in a class that generalizes differentiable groupoids to allow manifolds with corners. We show that this construction encompasses many examples. The subalgebra of regularizing operators is identified with the smooth algebra of the groupoid, in the sense of non-commutative geometry. Symbol calculus for our algebra lies in the Poisson algebra of functions on the dual of the Lie algebroid of the groupoid. As applications, we give a new proof of the Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt theorem for Lie algebroids and a concrete quantization of the Lie-Poisson structure on the dual $A^*$ of a Lie algebroid.

Transverse measures, the modular class, and a cohomology pairing for Lie algebroids

We show that every Lie algebroid $A$ over a manifold $P$ has a natural representation on the line bundle $Q_A = \wedge^{top}A \otimes \wedge^{top} T^*P$. The line bundle $Q_A$ may be viewed as the Lie algebroid analog of the orientation bundle in topology, and sections of $Q_A$ may be viewed as transverse measures to $A$. As a consequence, there is a well-defined class in the first Lie algebroid cohomology $H^1(A)$ called the modular class of the Lie algebroid $A$. This is the same as the one introduced earlier by Weinstein using the Poisson structure on $A^*$. We show that there is a natural pairing between the Lie algebroid cohomology spaces of $A$ with trivial coefficients and with coefficients in $Q_A$. This generalizes the pairing used in the Poincare duality of finite-dimensional Lie algebra cohomology. The case of holomorphic Lie algebroids is also discussed, where the existence of the modular class is connected with the Chern class of the line bundle $Q_A$.

Semiquantum Geometry

In this paper we study associative algebras with a Poisson algebra structure on the center acting by derivations on the rest of the algebra. These structures, which we call Poisson fibred algebras, appear in the study of quantum groups at roots of 1 and related algebras, as well as in the representation theory of affine Lie algebras at the critical level. Poisson fibred algebras lead to a generalization of Poisson geometry, which we develop in the paper. We also take up the general study of noncommutative spaces which are close to enough commutative ones so that they contain enough points to have interesting commutative geometry. One of the most striking uses of our noncommutative spaces is the quantum Borel-Weil-Bott Theorem for quantum sl_q (2) at a root of unity, which comes as a calculation of the cohomology of actual sheaves on actual topological spaces.

Groupoids: unifying internal and external symmetry

The aim of this paper is to explain, mostly through examples, what groupoids are and how they describe symmetry. We will begin with elementary examples, with discrete symmetry, and end with examples in the differentiable setting which involve Lie groupoids and their corresponding infinitesimal objects, Lie algebroids.

The differential geometry of Fedosov's quantization

B. Fedosov has given a simple and very natural construction of a deformation quantization for any symplectic manifold, using a flat connection on the bundle of formal Weyl algebras associated to the tangent bundle of a symplectic manifold. The connection is obtained by affinizing, nonlinearizing, and iteratively flattening a given torsion free symplectic connection. In this paper, a classical analog of Fedosov's operations on connections is analyzed and shown to produce the usual exponential mapping of a linear connection on an ordinary manifold. A symplectic version is also analyzed. Finally, some remarks are made on the implications for deformation quantization of Fedosov's index theorem on general symplectic manifolds.

Classical Theta Functions and Quantum Tori

The Schwartz kernel of the multiplication operation on a quantum torus is shown to be the distributional boundary value of a classical multivariate theta function. The kernel satisfies a Schrödinger equation in which the role of time is played by the deformation parameter $\hbar$ and the role of the hamiltonian by a Poisson structure. At least in some special cases, the kernel can be written as a sum of products of single-variable theta functions.
