Positive and nodal solutions for the Minkowski mean curvature equation: multiplicity and asymptotics

We consider the Dirichlet problem for the mean curvature operator in Minkowski space, \[ -\operatorname{div}\left(\frac{\nabla u}{\sqrt{1-|\nabla u|^2}}\right) = \lambda u + \mu h(x,u) \quad \text{in } \Omega, \qquad u = 0 \quad \text{on } \partial\Omega, \] in a bounded domain $\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^N$, where $\lambda, \mu$ are real parameters, and the nonlinearity $h$ is superlinear at $u = 0$. In particular, we study the combined effect of the parameters $\lambda,\,\mu$ on the multiplicity of solutions. In the general setting, following Szulkin's approach for nonsmooth functionals, we prove the existence, for $\lambda$ not belonging to the spectrum of the Dirichlet Laplacian and $\mu$ sufficiently large, of a global minimizing solution (with negative action level) and of a min-max solution (with positive action level). Moreover, we characterize the limiting profiles of these solutions as $\mu \to +\infty$. More precisely, when the global minimizer is positive, its limit profile is $\mathrm{dist}(\cdot,\partial\Omega)$, thus saturating, in the limit, the geometric constraint $|\nabla u|\le1$, while min-max solutions collapse uniformly to zero as $\mu\to+\infty$. A nonexistence criterion is also given for suitable values of $\lambda$ and $\mu$. Finally, when the domain $\Omega$ is a ball, using a shooting approach, we establish the existence of arbitrarily many nodal radial solutions for every $\lambda \ge 0$ and for $\mu$ sufficiently large.

Periodic orbits with prescribed negative energy for relativistic Keplerian problems

Using a variational approach, we study the existence of periodic solutions with prescribed energy for the relativistic equation \begin{equation*} \dfrac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}t}\left(\dfrac{m\dot x}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^{2}/c^{2}}}\right) = -\alpha \frac{x}{|x|^{3}} + \nabla W(x), \qquad x\in\mathbb{R}^{N}\setminus\{0\}, \end{equation*} where $W$ is a lower-order perturbation of the Kepler potential. The main difficulty stems from the fact that the Kepler singularity is critical for the associated Maupertuis functional, lying exactly at the boundary between the weak force and strong force regimes. To overcome the resulting lack of compactness, we use a penalization procedure and develop a suitable min-max scheme combined with a blow-up analysis of near-collision critical sequences. As a consequence, we establish the existence of periodic solutions on prescribed negative energy levels, obtaining non-perturbative results in every dimension $N\geq 2$.

Reparametrizing the relativistic Kepler equation: a bridge to Levi-Civita-type models

We establish a link between different relativistic variants of the Kepler problem. In particular, we show that solutions of the special relativistic model with fixed energy can be reparameterized as solutions of a generalized Kepler equation with an additional $1/r^2$ term in the gravitational potential. This yields a dynamics of the same type as the Levi-Civita correction, up to different coefficients.

Bifurcation from periodic solutions of central force problems in the three-dimensional space

The paper deals with electromagnetic perturbations of a central force problem of the form \begin{equation*} \dfrac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}t} \bigl( \varphi(\dot{x}) \bigr) = V'(|x|) \dfrac{x}{|x|} + E_{\varepsilon}(t,x)+\dot{x} \wedge B_{\varepsilon}(t,x), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^3 \setminus \{0\}, \end{equation*} where $V \colon (0,+\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ is a smooth function, $E_\varepsilon$ and $B_\varepsilon$ are respectively the electric field and the magnetic field, smooth and periodic in time, $\varepsilon\in\mathbb{R}$ is a small parameter. The considered differential operator includes, as special cases, the classical one, $\varphi(v)=mv$, as well as that of special relativity, $\varphi(v) = mv/\sqrt{1-\vert v \vert^2/c^2}$. We investigate whether non-circular periodic solutions of the unperturbed problem (i.e., with $\varepsilon=0$) can be continued into periodic solutions for $\varepsilon\neq0$ small, both for the fixed-period problem and, if the perturbation is time-independent, for the fixed-energy problem. The proof is based on an abstract bifurcation theorem of variational nature, which is applied to suitable Hamiltonian action functionals. In checking the required non-degeneracy conditions we take advantage of the existence of partial action-angle coordinates as provided by the Mishchenko--Fomenko theorem for superintegrable systems. Physically relevant problems to which our results can be applied are homogeneous central force problems in classical mechanics and the Kepler problem in special relativity.

An Orlicz space approach to exponential elliptic problems in higher dimensions

We consider semilinear elliptic problems of the form \[ -\Delta u + \lambda u = f(x,u), \quad u\in H^1_0(A), \] where $A\subset\mathbb{R}^N$, $N\geq3$, is either a bounded or unbounded annulus, and $\lambda \geq0$. We study a broad class of nonlinearities $f$ with superlinear growth at infinity, including exponential- and power-type ones. Under suitable assumptions, we establish the existence of a positive nonradial solution via techniques in the spirit of Szulkin's nonsmooth critical point theory, applied within a convex cone in Orlicz spaces. Notably, the Trudinger-Moser inequality fails in the whole Sobolev space $H^1_0(A)$.

Nearly-circular periodic solutions of perturbed relativistic Kepler problems: the fixed-period and the fixed-energy problems

The paper studies the existence of periodic solutions of a perturbed relativistic Kepler problem of the type \begin{equation*} \dfrac{\mathrm{d}}{\mathrm{d}t}\left(\frac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^{2}/c^{2}}}\right) = -\alpha\frac{x}{|x|^{3}} + \varepsilon \, \nabla_{x} U(t,x), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^d\setminus\{0\}, \end{equation*} with $d=2$ or $d=3$, bifurcating, for $\varepsilon$ small enough, from the set of circular solutions of the unperturbed system. Both the case of the fixed-period problem (assuming that $U$ is $T$-periodic in time) and the case of the fixed-energy problem (assuming that $U$ is independent of time) are considered.

Bifurcation of closed orbits of Hamiltonian systems with application to geodesics of the Schwarzschild metric

We investigate bifurcation of closed orbits with a fixed energy level for a class of nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems with two degrees of freedom. More precisely, we make a joint use of Moser invariant curve theorem and Poincar\'e-Birkhoff fixed point theorem to prove that a periodic non-degenerate invariant torus $\mathcal{T}$ of the unperturbed problem gives rise to infinitely many closed orbits, bifurcating from a family of tori accumulating onto $\mathcal{T}$. The required non-degeneracy condition, which is nothing but a reformulation of the usual non-degeneracy condition in the isoenergetic KAM theory, is expressed in terms of the derivative of the apsidal angle with respect to the angular momentum: in this way, tools from the theory of time-maps of nonlinear oscillators can be used to verify it in concrete problems. Applications are given to perturbations of central force problems in the plane, and to equatorial geodesic dynamics for perturbations of the Schwarzschild metric.

Multiplicity and symmetry breaking for supercritical elliptic problems in exterior domains

We deal with the following semilinear equation in exterior domains \[-\Delta u + u = a(x)|u|^{p-2}u,\qquad u\in H^1_0({A_R}), \] where ${A_R} := \{x\in\mathbb{R}^N:\, |x|>{R}\}$, $N\ge 3$, $R>0$. Assuming that the weight $a$ is positive and satisfies some symmetry and monotonicity properties, we exhibit a positive solution having the same features as $a$, for values of $p>2$ in a suitable range that includes exponents greater than the standard Sobolev critical one. In the special case of radial weight $a$, our existence result ensures multiplicity of nonradial solutions. We also provide an existence result for supercritical $p$ in nonradial exterior domains.

Prescribed energy periodic solutions of Kepler problems with relativistic corrections

We consider two different relativistic versions of the Kepler problem in the plane: the first one involves the relativistic differential operator, the second one involves a correction for the usual gravitational potential due to Levi-Civita. When a small external perturbation is added into such equations, we investigate the existence of periodic solutions with prescribed energy bifurcating from periodic invariant tori of the unperturbed problems. Our main tool is an abstract bifurcation theory from periodic manifolds developed by Weinstein, which is applied in the case of nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems satisfying the usual KAM isoenergetic non-degeneracy condition.

Infinitely many periodic solutions to a Lorentz force equation with singular electromagnetic potential

We consider the Lorentz force equation $$ \frac{d}{dt}\left(\frac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^{2}/c^{2}}}\right) = q \left(E(t,x) + \dot x \times B(t,x)\right), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^3, $$ in the physically relevant case of a singular electric field $E$. Assuming that $E$ and $B$ are $T$-periodic in time and satisfy suitable further conditions, we prove the existence of infinitely many $T$-periodic solutions. The proof is based on a min-max principle of Lusternik-Schrelmann type, in the framework of non-smooth critical point theory. Applications are given to the problem of the motion of a charged particle under the action of a Li\'enard-Wiechert potential and to the relativistic forced Kepler problem.

A Maupertuis-type principle in relativistic mechanics and applications

We provide a Maupertuis-type principle for the following system of ODE, of interest in special relativity: $$ \frac{\rm d}{{\rm d}t}\left(\frac{m\dot{x}}{\sqrt{1-|\dot{x}|^2/c^2}}\right)=\nabla V(x),\qquad x\in\Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n, $$ where $m, c > 0$ and $V: \Omega \to \mathbb{R}$ is a function of class $C^1$. As an application, we prove the existence of multiple periodic solutions with prescribed energy for a relativistic $N$-centre type problem in the plane.

Planar Hamiltonian systems: index theory and applications to the existence of subharmonics

We consider a planar Hamiltonian system of the type $Jz' = \nabla_z H(t,z)$, where $H: \mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{R}^2 \to \mathbb{R}$ is a function periodic in the time variable, such that $\nabla_z H(t,0) \equiv 0$ and $\nabla_z H(t,z)$ is asymptotically linear for $\vert z \vert \to +\infty$. After revisiting the index theory for linear planar Hamiltonian systems, by using the Poincar\'e-Birkhoff fixed point theorem we prove that the above nonlinear system has subharmonic solutions of any order $k$ large enough, whenever the rotation numbers (or, equivalently, the mean Conley-Zehnder indices) of the linearizations of the system at zero and at infinity are different. Applications are given to the case of planar Hamiltonian systems coming from second order scalar ODEs.

Periodic solutions to relativistic Kepler problems: a variational approach

We study relativistic Kepler problems in the plane. At first, using non-smooth critical point theory, we show that under a general time-periodic external force of gradient type there are two infinite families of T-periodic solutions, parameterized by their winding number around the singularity: the first family is a sequence of local minima, while the second one comes from a mountain pass-type geometry of the action functional. Secondly, we investigate the minimality of the circular and non-circular periodic solutions of the unforced problem, via Morse index theory and level estimates of the action functional.

Periodic perturbations of central force problems and an application to a restricted $3$-body problem

We consider a perturbation of a central force problem of the form \begin{equation*} \ddot x = V'(|x|) \frac{x}{|x|} + \varepsilon \,\nabla_x U(t,x), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}, \end{equation*} where $\varepsilon \in \mathbb{R}$ is a small parameter, $V\colon (0,+\infty) \to \mathbb{R}$ and $U\colon \mathbb{R} \times (\mathbb{R}^{2} \setminus \{0\}) \to \mathbb{R}$ are smooth functions, and $U$ is $\tau$-periodic in the first variable. Based on the introduction of suitable time-maps (the radial period and the apsidal angle) for the unperturbed problem ($\varepsilon=0$) and of an associated non-degeneracy condition, we apply an higher-dimensional version of the Poincar\'{e}-Birkhoff fixed point theorem to prove the existence of non-circular $\tau$-periodic solutions bifurcating from invariant tori at $\varepsilon=0$. We then prove that this non-degeneracy condition is satisfied for some concrete examples of physical interest (including the homogeneous potential $V(r)=\kappa/r^{\alpha}$ for $\alpha\in(-\infty,2)\setminus\{-2,0,1\}$). Finally, an application is given to a restricted $3$-body problem with a non-Newtonian interaction.

Unbounded solutions to a system of coupled asymmetric oscillators at resonance

We deal with the following system of coupled asymmetric oscillators \[ \begin{cases} \ddot{x}_1+a_1x_1^+-b_1x^-_1+ϕ_1(x_2)=p_1(t) \\ \ddot{x}_2+a_2\,x_2^+-b_2\,x^-_2+ϕ_2(x_1)=p_2(t) \end{cases} \] where $ϕ_i: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is locally Lipschitz continuous and bounded, $p_i: \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ is continuous and $2π$-periodic and the positive real numbers $a_i, b_i$ satisfy $$ \dfrac{1}{\sqrt{a_i}}+\dfrac{1}{\sqrt{b_i}}=\dfrac{2}{n}, \quad \mbox{ for some } n \in \mathbb{N}. $$ We define a suitable function $L: \mathbb{T}^2 \to \mathbb{R}^2$, appearing as the higher-dimensional generalization of the well known resonance function used in the scalar setting, and we show how unbounded solutions to the system can be constructed whenever $L$ has zeros with a special structure. The proof relies on a careful investigation of the dynamics of the associated (four-dimensional) Poincaré map, in action-angle coordinates.

A supercritical elliptic equation in the annulus

By a combination of variational and topological techniques in the presence of invariant cones, we detect a new type of positive axially symmetric solutions of the Dirichlet problem for the elliptic equation $$ -\Delta u + u = a(x)|u|^{p-2}u $$ in an annulus $A \subset \mathbb R^N$ ($N\ge3$). Here $p>2$ is allowed to be supercritical and $a(x)$ is an axially symmetric but possibly nonradial function with additional symmetry and monotonicity properties, which are shared by the solution $u$ we construct. In the case where $a$ equals a positive constant, we detect conditions, only depending on the exponent $p$ and on the inner radius of the annulus, that ensure that the solution is nonradial.

Uniqueness of positive solutions for boundary value problems associated with indefinite $ϕ$-Laplacian type equations

The paper provides a uniqueness result for positive solutions of the Neumann and periodic boundary value problems associated with the $ϕ$-Laplacian equation \begin{equation*} \bigl{(} ϕ(u') \bigr{)}' + a(t) g(u) = 0, \end{equation*} where $ϕ$ is a homeomorphism with $ϕ(0)=0$, $a(t)$ is a stepwise indefinite weight and $g(u)$ is a continuous function. When dealing with the $p$-Laplacian differential operator $ϕ(s)=|s|^{p-2}s$ with $p>1$, and the nonlinear term $g(u)=u^γ$ with $γ\in\mathbb{R}$, we prove the existence of a unique positive solution when $γ\in\mathopen{]}-\infty,(1-2p)/(p-1)\mathclose{]} \cup \mathopen{]}p-1,+\infty\mathclose{[}$.

Parabolic orbits in Celestial Mechanics: a functional-analytic approach

We prove the existence of half-entire parabolic solutions, asymptotic to a prescribed central configuration, for the equation \begin{equation*} \ddot{x} = \nabla U(x) + \nabla W(t,x), \qquad x \in \mathbb{R}^{d}, \end{equation*} where $d \geq 2$, $U$ is a positive and positively homogeneous potential with homogeneity degree $-α$ with $α\in\mathopen{]}0,2\mathclose{[}$, and $W$ is a (possibly time-dependent) lower order term, for $\vert x \vert \to +\infty$, with respect to $U$. The proof relies on a perturbative argument, after an appropriate formulation of the problem in a suitable functional space. Applications to several problems of Celestial Mechanics (including the $N$-centre problem, the $N$-body problem and the restricted $(N+H)$-body problem) are given.
