Cascade Superfluorescence in Er:YLF

We report the analysis of paired photon pulses arising from two cascading transitions in continuously pumped Erbium-doped YLiF$_4$ 1% and 0.01% crystals at 1.6 K. The dependence of the pulse peak intensity on the squared number of involved Erbium ions, between 10$^{11}$ and 10$^{13}$, definitely identifies the cooperative nature of the two pulsed emissions, that are generated by the subsequent, spontaneous formation of coherent states. The observed fluctuations of the time interval between the paired pulses and, most importantly, its correlation with the second pulse duration, demonstrate that the Erbium ions coherence is indeed seeded by vacuum fluctuations.

Local tuning of WS2 photoluminescence using polymeric micro-actuators in a monolithic van der Waals heterostructure

The control of the local strain profile in 2D materials offers an invaluable tool for tailoring the electronic and photonic properties of solid-state devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a local engineering of the exciton photoluminescence (PL) energy of monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) by means of strain. We apply a local uniaxial stress to WS2 by exploiting electron-beam patterned and actuated polymeric micrometric artificial muscles (MAMs), which we implement onto monolithic synthetic WS2/graphene heterostructures. We show that MAMs are able to induce an in-plane stress to the top WS2 layer of the van der Waals heterostructure and that the latter can slide on the graphene underneath with negligible friction. As a proof of concept for the local strain-induced PL shift experiments, we exploit a two-MAM configuration in order to apply uniaxial tensile stress on well-defined micrometric regions of WS2. Remarkably, our architecture does not require the adoption of fragile suspended microstructures. We observe a spatial modulation of the excitonic PL energy of the WS2 monolayers under stress, which agrees with the expected strain profile and attains a maximum redshift of about 40 meV at the maximum strain intensity point. After the actuation, a time-dependent PL blueshift is observed in agreement with the viscoelastic properties of the polymeric MAMs. Our approach enables inducing local and arbitrary deformation profiles and circumvents some key limitations and technical challenges of alternative strain engineering methods requiring the 2D material transfer and production of suspended membranes.

Measurements and analysis of current-voltage characteristic of a pn diode for an undergraduate physics laboratory

We show that in a simple experiment at undergraduate level, suitable to be performed in classes of science and engineering students, it is possible to test accurately, on a popular 1N4148 p-n diode, the range of the junction currents where the Shockley equation model can be considered satisfactory. The experiment benefits from a system of temperature control and data collection driven in a LabVIEW environment. With these tools a large quantity of data can be recorded in the temporal frame of a lab session. Significant deviations of the experimental I-V with respect to the ideal behaviour curve predicted by the Shockley equation are observed, both at low and high current. A better agreement over the entire range is obtained introducing, as is customary, a four parameters model, including a parallel and a series resistance. A new iterative fitting procedure is presented which treats the I-V data of different regimes on the same level, and allows a simultaneous determination of the four parameters for each temperature selected. Moreover, the knowledge of the temperature dependence of saturation current is used to estimate the energy gap of silicon. The connection of a macroscopic measure with a microscopic quantity is another valuable feature of this experiment, from an educational point of view.

Circular plate capacitor with different disks

In this paper we write a system of integral equations for a capacitor composed by two disks of different radii, generalizing Love's equation for equal disks. We compute the complete asymptotic form of the capacitance matrix both for large and small distances obtaining a generalization of Kirchhoff's formula for the latter case.

Precise Determination of Minimum Achievable Temperature for Solid-State Optical Refrigeration

We measure the minimum achievable temperature (MAT) as a function of excitation wavelength in anti-Stokes fluorescence cooling of high purity Yb3+-doped LiYF4 (Yb:YLF) crystal. Such measurements were obtained by developing a sensitive noncontact thermometry that is based on a two-band differential luminescence spectroscopy using balanced photo-detectors. These measurements are in excellent agreement with the prediction of the laser cooling model and identify MAT of 110 K at 1020 nm, corresponding to E4-E5 Stark manifold transition in Yb:YLF crystal.
