Prescribing Gaussian curvature on surfaces with conical singularities and geodesic boundary

We study conformal metrics with prescribed Gaussian curvature on surfaces with conical singularities and geodesic boundary in supercritical regimes. Exploiting a variational argument, we derive a general existence result for surfaces with at least two boundary components. This seems to be the first result in this setting. Moreover, we allow to have conical singularities with both positive and negative orders, that is cone angles both less and grater than $2π$.

Generic properties of the Rabinowitz continuum

In this paper we prove that generically, in the sense of domain variations, the unbounded Rabinowitz continuum of solutions to a nonlinear eigenvalue problem is a simple analytic curve. The global bifurcation diagram resembles the classic model case of the Gel'fand problem in dimension two.

Existence results for a super Toda system

We solve a super Toda system on a closed Riemann surface of genus~$γ>1$ and with some particular spin structures. This generalizes the min-max methods and results for super Liouville equations and gives new existence results for super Toda systems.

Generic properties of free boundary problems in plasma physics

We are concerned with the global bifurcation analysis of positive solutions to free boundary problems arising in plasma physics. We show that in general, in the sense of domain variations, the following alternative holds: either the shape of the branch of solutions resembles the monotone one of the model case of the two-dimensional disk, or it is a continuous simple curve without bifurcation points which ends up at a point where the boundary density vanishes. On the other hand, we deduce a general criterion ensuring the existence of a free boundary in the interior of the domain. Application to a classic nonlinear eigenvalue problem is also discussed.

Infinitely many solutions for Schrödinger-Newton equations

We prove the existence of infinitely many non-radial positive solutions for the Schrödinger-Newton system $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} Δu- V(|x|)u + Ψu=0, &x\in\mathbb{R}^3,\newline ΔΨ+\frac12 u^2=0, &x\in\mathbb{R}^3, \end{array}\right. $$ provided that $V(r)$ has the following behavior at infinity: $$ V(r)=V_0+\frac{a}{r^m}+O\left(\frac{1}{r^{m+θ}}\right) \quad\mbox{ as } r\rightarrow\infty, $$ where $\frac12\le m<1$ and $a, V_0, θ$ are some positive constants. In particular, for any $s$ large we use a reduction method to construct $s-$bump solutions lying on a circle of radius $r\sim (s\log s)^{\frac{1}{1-m}}$.

New universal estimates for free boundary problems arising in plasma physics

For $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ a smooth and bounded domain, we derive a sharp universal energy estimate for non-negative solutions of free boundary problems on $Ω$ arising in plasma physics. As a consequence, we are able to deduce new universal estimates for this class of problems. We first come up with a sharp positivity threshold which guarantees that there is no free boundary inside $Ω$ or either, equivalently, with a sharp necessary condition for the existence of a free boundary in the interior of $Ω$. Then we derive an explicit bound for the $L^{\infty}$-norm of non-negative solutions and also obtain explicit estimates for the thresholds relative to other neat density boundary values. At least to our knowledge, these are the first explicit estimates of this sort in the superlinear case.

On the uniqueness and monotonicity of solutions of free boundary problems

For any $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$ smooth and bounded domain, we prove uniqueness of positive solutions of free boundary problems arising in plasma physics on $Ω$ in a neat interval depending only by the best constant of the Sobolev embedding $H^{1}_0(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^{2p}(Ω)$, $p\in [1,\frac{N}{N-2})$ and show that the boundary density and a suitably defined energy share a universal monotonic behavior. At least to our knowledge, for $p>1$, this is the first result about the uniqueness for a domain which is not a two-dimensional ball and in particular the very first result about the monotonicity of solutions, which seems to be new even for $p=1$. The threshold, which is sharp for $p=1$, yields a new condition which guarantees that there is no free boundary inside $Ω$. As a corollary, in the same range, we solve a long-standing open problem (dating back to the work of Berestycki-Brezis in 1980) about the uniqueness of variational solutions. Moreover, on a two-dimensional ball we describe the full branch of positive solutions, that is, we prove the monotonicity along the curve of positive solutions until the boundary density vanishes.

Min-max solutions for super sinh-Gordon equations on compact surfaces

In the present paper we initiate the variational analysis of a super sinh-Gordon system on compact surfaces, yielding the first example of non-trivial solution of min-max type. The proof is based on a linking argument jointly with a suitably defined Nehari manifold and a careful analysis of Palais-Smale sequences. We complement this study with a multiplicity result exploiting the symmetry of the problem.

Blow-up analysis of conformal metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures

This paper is concerned with the compactness of metrics of the disk with prescribed Gaussian and geodesic curvatures. We consider a blowing-up sequence of metrics and give a precise description of its asymptotic behavior. In particular, the metrics blow-up at a unique point on the boundary and we are able to give necessary conditions on its location. It turns out that such conditions depend locally on the Gaussian curvatures but they depend on the geodesic curvatures in a nonlocal way. This is a novelty with respect to the classical Nirenberg problem where the blow-up conditions are local, and this new aspect is driven by the boundary condition.

On the global bifurcation diagram of the Gel'fand problem

For domains of first kind [7,13] we describe the qualitative behavior of the global bifurcation diagram of the unbounded branch of solutions of the Gel'fand problem crossing the origin. At least to our knowledge this is the first result about the exact monotonicity of the branch of non-minimal solutions which is not just concerned with radial solutions [28] and/or with symmetric domains [23]. Toward our goal we parametrize the branch not by the $L^{\infty}(Ω)$-norm of the solutions but by the energy of the associated mean field problem. The proof relies on a carefully modified spectral analysis of mean field type equations.

Blow up solutions for Sinh-Gordon equation with residual mass

We are concerned with the Sinh-Gordon equation in bounded domains. We construct blow up solutions with residual mass exhibiting either partial or asymmetric blow up, i.e. where both the positive and negative part of the solution blow up. This is the first result concerning residual mass for the Sinh-Gordon equation showing in particular that the concentration-compactness theory of Brezis-Merle can not be extended to this class of problems.

Existence results for a super-Liouville equation on compact surfaces

We are concerned with a super-Liouville equation on compact surfaces with genus larger than one, obtaining the first non-trivial existence result for this class of problems via min-max methods. In particular we make use of a Nehari manifold and, after showing the validity of the Palais-Smale condition, we exhibit either a mountain pass or linking geometry.

Mean field equations on tori: existence and uniqueness of evenly symmetric blow-up solutions

We are concerned with the blow-up analysis of mean field equations. It has been proven in [6] that solutions blowing-up at the same non-degenerate blow-up set are unique. On the other hand, the authors in [18] show that solutions with a degenerate blow-up set are in general non-unique. In this paper we first prove that evenly symmetric solutions on a flat torus with a degenerate two-point blow-up set are unique. In the second part of the paper we complete the analysis by proving the existence of such blow-up solutions by using a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction method. Moreover, we deduce that all evenly symmetric blow-up solutions come from one-point blow-up solutions of the mean field equation on a "half" torus.

Non-degeneracy and uniqueness of solutions to singular mean field equations on bounded domains

The aim of this paper is to complete the program initiated in [50], [23] and then carried out by several authors concerning non-degeneracy and uniqueness of solutions to mean field equations. In particular, we consider mean field equations with general singular data on non-smooth domains. The argument is based on the Alexandrov-Bol inequality and on the eigenvalues analysis of linearized singular Liouville-type problems.

Local uniqueness of $m$-bubbling sequences for the Gel'fand equation

We consider the Gel'fand problem, $$ \begin{cases} Δw_{\varepsilon}+\varepsilon^2 h e^{w_{\varepsilon}}=0\quad&\mbox{in}\quadΩ, w_{\varepsilon}=0\quad&\mbox{on}\quad\partialΩ, \end{cases} $$ where $h$ is a nonnegative function in ${Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^2}$. Under suitable assumptions on $h$ and $Ω$, we prove the local uniqueness of $m-$bubbling solutions for any $\varepsilon>0$ small enough.

A singular Sphere Covering Inequality: uniqueness and symmetry of solutions to singular Liouville-type equations

We derive a singular version of the Sphere Covering Inequality which was recently introduced in [42], suitable for treating singular Liouville-type problems with superharmonic weights. As an application we deduce new uniqueness results for solutions of the singular mean field equation both on spheres and on bounded domains, as well as new self-contained proofs of previously known results, such as the uniqueness of spherical convex polytopes first established in [56]. Furthermore, we derive new symmetry results for the spherical Onsager vortex equation.
