Wave equations associated to Liouville-type problems: global existence in time and blow up criteria

We are concerned with wave equations associated to some Liouville-type problems on compact surfaces, focusing on sinh-Gordon equation and general Toda systems. Our aim is on one side to develop the analysis for wave equations associated to the latter problems and second, to substantially refine the analysis initiated in [11] concerning the mean field equation. In particular, by exploiting the variational analysis recently derived for Liouville-type problems we prove global existence in time for the sub-critical case and we give general blow up criteria for the super-critical and critical case. The strategy is mainly based on fixed point arguments and improved versions of the Moser-Trudinger inequality.

Non degeneracy, Mean Field Equations and the Onsager theory of 2D turbulence

The understanding of some large energy, negative specific heat states in the Onsager description of 2D turbulence, seems to require the analysis of a subtle open problem about bubbling solutions of the mean field equation. Motivated by this application we prove that, under suitable non degeneracy assumptions on the associated $m$-vortex Hamiltonian, the $m$-point bubbling solutions of the mean field equation are non degenerate as well. Then we deduce that the Onsager mean field equilibrium entropy is smooth and strictly convex in the high energy regime on domains of second kind.

Uniqueness of bubbling solutions of mean field equations

We prove uniqueness of blow up solutions of the mean field equation as $ρ_n \rightarrow 8πm$, $m\in\mathbb{N}$. If $u_{n,1}$ and $u_{n,2}$ are two sequences of bubbling solutions with the same $ρ_n$ and the same (non degenerate) blow up set, then $u_{n,1}=u_{n,2}$ for sufficiently large $n$. The proof of the uniqueness requires a careful use of some sharp estimates for bubbling solutions of mean field equations [24] and a rather involved analysis of suitably defined Pohozaev-type identities as recently developed in [51] in the context of the Chern-Simons-Higgs equations. Moreover, motivated by the Onsager statistical description of two dimensional turbulence, we are bound to obtain a refined version of an estimate about $ρ_n-8πm$ in case the first order evaluated in [24] vanishes.

Symmetry and uniqueness of solutions to some Liouville-type equations and systems

We prove symmetry and uniqueness results for three classes of Liouville-type problems arising in geometry and mathematical physics: asymmetric Sinh-Gordon equation, cosmic string equation and Toda system, under certain assumptions on the mass associated to these problems. The argument is in the spirit of the Sphere Covering Inequality which for the first time is used in treating different exponential nonlinearities and systems.

Blow-up analysis and existence results in the supercritical case for an asymmetric mean field equation with variable intensities

A class of equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface is considered. More precisely, we study an asymmetric sinh-Gordon problem arising as a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. We start by performing a blow-up analysis in order to derive some information on the local blow-up masses. As a consequence we get a compactness property in a supercritical range. We next introduce a variational argument based on improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities which yields existence of solutions for any choice of the underlying surface.

A mean field equation involving positively supported probability measures: blow-up phenomena and variational aspects

We are concerned with an elliptic problem which describes a mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence of vortices with variable intensities. In the first part of the paper we describe the blow-up phenomenon and highlight the differences from the standard mean field equation. In the second part we discuss the Moser-Trudinger inequality in terms of the blow-up masses and get the existence of solutions in a non-coercive regime by means of a variational argument, which is based on some improved Moser-Trudinger inequalities.

Analytic aspects of the Tzitzéica equation: blow-up analysis and existence results

We are concerned with the following class of equations with exponential nonlinearities: $$ Δu+h_1e^u-h_2e^{-2u}=0 \qquad \mbox{in } B_1\subset\mathbb{R}^2, $$ which is related to the Tzitzéica equation. Here $h_1, h_2$ are two smooth positive functions. The purpose of the paper is to initiate the analytical study of the above equation and to give a quite complete picture both for what concerns the blow-up phenomena and the existence issue. In the first part of the paper we provide a quantization of local blow-up masses associated to a blowing-up sequence of solutions. Next we exclude the presence of blow-up points on the boundary under the Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the second part of the paper we consider the Tzitzéica equation on compact surfaces: we start by proving a sharp Moser-Trudinger inequality related to this problem. Finally, we give a general existence result.

On the Topological degree of the Mean field equation with two parameters

We consider the following class of equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact surface $M$: $$ - Δu = ρ_1 \left( \frac{h_1 \,e^{u}}{\int_M h_1 \,e^{u} } - \frac{1}{|M|} \right) - ρ_2 \left( \frac{h_2 \,e^{-u}}{\int_M h_2 \,e^{-u} } - \frac{1}{|M|} \right), $$ which is associated to the mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence with arbitrarily signed vortices. Here $h_1, h_2$ are smooth positive functions and $ρ_1, ρ_2$ are two positive parameters. We start by proving a concentration phenomena for the above equation, which leads to a-priori bound for the solutions of this problem provided $ρ_i\notin 8π\mathbb{N}, \, i=1,2$. Then we study the blow up behavior when $ρ_1$ crosses $8π$ and $ρ_2 \notin 8π\mathbb{N}$. By performing a suitable decomposition of the above equation and using the shadow system that was introduced for the $SU(3)$ Toda system, we can compute the Leray-Schauder topological degree for $ρ_1 \in (0,8π) \cup (8π,16π)$ and $ρ_2 \notin 8π\mathbb{N}$. As a byproduct our argument, we give new existence results when the underlying manifold is a sphere and a new proof for some known existence result.

Classification of blow-up limits for the sinh-Gordon equation

The aim of this paper is to use a selection process and a careful study of the interaction of bubbling solutions to show a classification result for the blow-up values of the elliptic sinh-Gordon equation $$Δu+h_1e^u-h_2e^{-u}=0 \quad \mathrm{in}~B_1\subset\mathbb{R}^2.$$ In particular we get that the blow-up values are multiple of $8π.$ It generalizes the result of Jost, Wang, Ye and Zhou \cite{jwyz} where the extra assumption $h_1 = h_2$ is crucially used.

A general existence result for the Toda system on compact surfaces

In this paper we consider the Toda system of equations on a compact surface, which is motivated by the study of models in non-abelian Chern-Simons theory. We prove a general existence result using variational methods. The same analysis applies to a mean field equation which arises in fluid dynamics.

A topological join construction and the Toda system on compact surfaces of arbitrary genus

We consider a Toda system of Liouville equations defined on a compact surface which arises as a model for non-abelian Chern-Simons vortices. For the first time the range of parameters $ρ_1 \in (4kπ, 4(k+1)π)$, $k \in \mathbb{N}$, $ρ_2 \in (4π, 8π)$ is studied with a variational approach on surfaces with arbitrary genus. We provide a general existence result by means of a new improved Moser-Trudinger type inequality and introducing a topological join construction in order to describe the interaction of the two components.

New existence results for the mean field equation on compact surfaces via degree theory

We consider a class of equations with exponential non-linearities on a compact surface which arises as the mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulence with arbitrarily signed vortices. We prove an existence result via degree theory. This yields new existence results in case of a topological sphere. The proof is carried out by considering the parity of the Leray-Schauder degree associated to the problem. With this method we recover also some known previous results.

An Existence Result for the Mean Field Equation on Compact Surfaces in a Doubly Supercritical Regime

We consider a class of variational equations with exponential nonlinearities on a compact Riemannian surface, describing the mean field equation of the equilibrium turbulance with arbitrarily signed vortices. For the first time, we consider the problem with both supercritical parameters and we give an existence result by using variational methods. In doing this, we present a new Moser-Trudinger type inequality under suitable conditions on the center of mass and the scale of concentration of both e^u and e^{-u}, where u is the unknown function in the equation.
