Expanding the Neutral Atom Gate Set: Native iSWAP and Exchange Gates from Dipolar Rydberg Interactions

We present a native realization of iSWAP and parametrized \textit{exchange} gates for neutral-atom quantum processing units. Our approach leverages strong dipole-dipole interactions between two different dipole-coupled Rydberg states, employing optimal control techniques to design high-fidelity, time-efficient gate pulses. To minimize experimental complexity, we utilize global driving fields acting identically on all atoms and apply pulse smoothing techniques. While detrimental van der Waals interactions pose a significant challenge, we demonstrate that for both $^{133}$Cs, as a representative alkali atom, and $^{88}$Sr, an alkaline-earth species, high-fidelity pulses can nevertheless be obtained over a broad range of parameters. We identify candidate protocols with reduced susceptibility to noise and analyze their performance under realistic conditions, accounting for atomic motion, Rydberg decay, and experimentally motivated laser frequency and intensity noise. Crucially, we demonstrate that in both Alkali and alkaline-earth-based systems, we can obtain fast iSWAP gates with fidelities of $99.9\%$ under realistic experimental conditions. These results pave the way for expanding the neutral-atom gate set beyond conventional Rydberg-blockade-based entangling gates.

Vacuum-induced interference in light scattering by multilevel atomic chains

We investigate cooperative light scattering by an ordered chain of multilevel atoms, which possess two quasi-resonant transitions with parallel dipole moments. Interference between dipole transitions induced by coupling with the vacuum gives rise to so called cross-damping and cross-shifts, that modify the incoherent and coherent dynamics and can be manifest in the spectroscopic properties of the emitted light. We determine the excitation spectrum when the atomic chain is driven by an external laser in the limit in which the dipolar transitions can be described by harmonic oscillators and the scattering is coherent. We show that the interplay of multilevel interference and superradiance can give rise to measurable effects in chains of alkali-metal atoms.

Master equation for multilevel interference in a superradiant medium

We derive a master equation for a superradiant medium which includes multilevel interference betwen the individual scatterers. The derivation relies on the Born-Markov approximation and implements the coarse graining formalism. The master equation fulfils the Lindblad form and contains terms describing single-atom multilevel interference, multi-atom interference between identical transitions, and multi-atom interference between different electronic transitions with parallel dipoles. This formalism is then applied to determine the excitation spectrum of two emitters using the parameters of the Hydrogen transitions 2S$_{1/2}\,\to$4P$_{1/2}$ and 2S$_{1/2}\,\to$4P$_{3/2}$, where the gap between the parallel dipoles is of the order of GHz. The distortion of the signal due to the interplay of multilevel and multi-emitter interference is analysed as a function of their distance. These results suggest that interference between parallel dipolar transition can significantly affect the spectroscopic properties of optically dense media.
