Sonic black holes with thick horizons in BECs

We consider simple one dimensional models of acoustic black holes formed by Bose-Einstein condensates where the flow is stepwise homogeneous. We shall concentrate on the case in which an extended sonic region is present, i.e. a region where the flow velocity equals exactly the speed of sound. These models can be thought of as acoustic black holes with a thick horizon. Particular attention will be devoted to the number of created particles and to the density-density correlation functions, these latter being at present time the experimental tool to identify Hawking like radiation in acoustic black holes.

Some considerations on BEC analogue black holes

In this paper, dedicated to the memory of A. Aurilia, we will review some basic features of Hawking's black hole radiation and compare them with the corresponding ones present in Bose-Einstein condensate analogue black holes.

Backreaction equations for 1+1 dimensional BEC sonic black holes

As in the gravitational context, one of the most challenging open question in analogue black holes formed in Bose-Einstein condensates concerns the backreaction of Hawking-like radiation on the condensate and its subsequent evolution. In this work we derive the basic equations describing this backreaction within the density-phase formalism, which avoids infrared divergences and is particularly well suited to one-dimensional configurations.

Acoustic black holes in BECs with an extended sonic region

In the context of Hawking-like radiation in sonic black holes formed by BECs we investigate the modifications of the emission spectrum caused by a finite width of the sonic transition region connecting the subsonic to supersonic flow.

Late-time behaviors of scalar field modes for a collapsing null shell spacetime and for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime

The behaviors of the modes for a massless minimally coupled scalar field are investigated for the Unruh state for Schwarzschild spacetime and the "in" vacuum state for a spacetime in which a spherically symmetric null shell collapses to form a nonrotating black hole. In both cases there are two different sets of solutions to the mode equation that make up the state. For both spacetimes, one set of modes oscillates forever with no damping of the oscillations and the other set approaches zero at late times. The difference between a mode that oscillates forever in the null-shell spacetime and the corresponding mode for the Unruh state vanishes as a power law in time. The modes that approach zero at late times also vanish at late times as a power law in time. In all cases the power-law damping is preceded by a period of oscillations that appear to be due to quasi-normal modes.

Looking for traces of Hawking radiation in correlation functions of BEC acoustic black holes

Renaud Parentani was one of the leading figures in Quantum Field Theory in curved spacetime, in particular concerning its applications to Hawking-like radiation in analogue models. In this paper dedicated to him, we discuss the characteristic features appearing in the correlation functions in an acoustic black hole formed by a Bose-Einstein condensate, considered as signature of the presence of Hawking radiation in this system.

The Unruh vacuum and the in-vacuum in the Reissner-Nordstr\"om spacetime

The Unruh vacuum is widely used as quantum state to describe black hole evaporation since near the horizon it reproduces the physical state of a quantum field, the so called in-vacuum, in the case the black hole is formed by gravitational collapse. We examine the relation between these two quantum states in the background spacetime of a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole (both extremal and not) highlighting similarities and striking differences.

The Hawking effect in the particles-partners correlations

We analyze the correlations functions across the horizon in Hawking black hole radiation to reveal the correlations between Hawking particles and their partners. The effects of the underlying space-time on this are shown in various examples ranging from acoustic black holes to regular black holes.

Quantum energy momentum tensor and equal time correlations in a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole

We consider a Reissner-Nordstr\"om black hole formed by the collapse of a charged null shell. The renormalised expectation values of the energy momentum tensor operator for a massless scalar field propagating in the 2D section of this spacetime are given. We then analyse the across the horizon correlations of the related energy density operator for free falling observers to reveal the correlations between the Hawking particles and their interior partners.

Correlations on weakly time-dependent transcritical white-hole flows

We report on observations made on a run of transcritical flows over an obstacle in a narrow channel. Downstream from the obstacle, the flows decelerate from supercritical to subcritical, typically with an undulation on the subcritical side (known in hydrodynamics as an undular hydraulic jump). In the Analogue Gravity context, this transition corresponds to a white-hole horizon. Free surface deformations are analyzed, mainly via the two-point correlation function which shows the presence of a checkerboard pattern in the vicinity of the undulation. In non-gated flows where the white-hole horizon occurs far downstream from the obstacle, this checkerboard pattern is shown to be due to low-frequency fluctuations associated with slow longitudinal movement of the undulation. It can thus be considered as an artifact due to a time-varying background. In gated flows, however, the undulation is typically "attached" to the obstacle, and the fluctuations associated with its movement are strongly suppressed. In this case, the observed correlation pattern is likely due to a stochastic ensemble of surface waves, scattering on a background that is essentially stationary.

Stress-energy Tensor for a Quantized Scalar Field in a Four-Dimensional Black Hole Spacetime that Forms From the Collapse of a Null Shell

A method is presented which allows for the numerical computation of the stress-energy tensor for a quantized massless minimally coupled scalar field in the region outside the event horizon of a 4D Schwarzschild black hole that forms from the collapse of a null shell. This method involves taking the difference between the stress-energy tensor for the in state in the collapsing null shell spacetime and that for the Unruh state in Schwarzschild spacetime. The construction of the modes for the in vacuum state and the Unruh state is discussed. Applying the method, the renormalized stress-energy tensor in the 2D case has been computed numerically and shown to be in agreement with the known analytic solution. In 4D, the presence of an effective potential in the mode equation causes scattering effects that make the construction of the in modes more complicated. The numerical computation of the in modes in this case is given.

Universal properties of multimodal human mobility: a statistical physics point of view

The statistical properties of human mobility have been studied in the framework of complex systems physics. Taking advantage from the new datasets made available by the information and communication technologies, the distributions of mobility path lengths and of trip duration have been considered to discover the fingerprints of complexity characters, but the role of the different transportation means on the statistical properties of urban mobility has not been studied in deep. In this paper we cope with the problem of pointing out the existence of universal features for different type of individual mobility: pedestrian, cycling and vehicular urban mobility. In particular, we propose the use of travel time as universal 'energy' for the mobility and we define a simple survival model that explains the travel time distribution of the different types of mobility. the analysis is performed in the metropolitan area of Bologna (Italy), where GPS datasets were available on individual trips using different transport means. Our results could suggest how to plan the different transportation networks to realize a multimodal mobility compatibly with the citizens propensities to use the different transport means.

Quantum correlations across the horizon in acoustic and gravitational Black Holes

We investigate, within the framework of Quantum Field Theory in curved space, the correlations across the horizon of a black hole in order to highlight the particle-partner pair creation mechanism at the origin of Hawking radiation. The analysis concerns both acoustic black holes, formed by Bose-Einstein condensates, and gravitational black holes. More precisely, we have considered a typical acoustic black hole metric with two asymptotic homogeneous regions and the Schwarzschild metric as describing a gravitational black hole. By considering equal time correlation functions, we find a striking disagreement between the two cases: the expected characteristic peak centered along the trajectories of the Hawking particles and their partners seems to appear only for the acoustic black hole and not for the gravitational Schwarzschild one. The reason for that is the existence of a 'quantum atmosphere' displaced from the horizon as the locus of origin of Hawking radiation together, and this is the crucial aspect, with the presence of a central singularity in the gravitational case swallowing everything is trapped inside the horizon. Correlations however are not absent in the gravitational case: to see them one has simply to consider correlation functions at unequal times which indeed display the expected peak.

Ramp-up of Hawking radiation in Bose-Einstein condensate analogue black holes

Inspired by a recent experiment by Steinhauer and co-workers, we present a simple model which describes the formation of an acoustic black hole in a Bose-Einstein condensate, allowing an analytical computation of the evolution in time of the corresponding density-density correlator. We show the emergence of analog Hawking radiation out of a "quantum atmosphere" region significantly displaced from the horizon. This is quantitatively studied both at $T=0$ and even in the presence of an initial temperature T, as is always the case experimentally.

Method to compute the stress-energy tensor for a quantized scalar field when a black hole forms from the collapse of a null shell

A method is given to compute the stress-energy tensor for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in a spacetime where a black hole forms from the collapse of a spherically symmetric null shell in four dimensions. Part of the method involves matching the modes for the in vacuum state to a complete set of modes in Schwarzschild spacetime. The other part involves subtracting from the unrenormalized expression for the stress-energy tensor when the field is in the in vacuum state, the corresponding expression when the field is in the Unruh state and adding to this the renormalized stress-energy tensor for the field in the Unruh state. The method is shown to work in the two-dimensional case where the results are known.

Correlations between a Hawking particle and its partner in a 1+1D Bose-Einstein condensate analog black hole

The Fourier transform of the density-density correlation function in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) analog black hole is a useful tool to investigate correlations between the Hawking particles and their partners. It can be expressed in terms of $\langle ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}\ ^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} \rangle$, where $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{ext}}$ is the annihilation operator for the Hawking particle and $^{\text{out}}\hat{a}_{\text{up}}^{\text{int}} $ is the corresponding one for the partner. This basic quantity is calculated for three different models for the BEC flow. It is shown that in each model the inclusion of the effective potential in the mode equations makes a significant difference. Furthermore, particle production induced by this effective potential in the interior of the black hole is studied for each model and shown to be nonthermal. An interesting peak that is related to the particle production and is present in some models is discussed.

Scattering of co-current surface waves on an analogue black hole

We report on what is to our knowledge the first scattering experiment of surface waves on an accelerating transcritical flow, which in the Analogue Gravity context is described by an effective spacetime with a black-hole horizon. This spacetime has been probed by an incident co-current wave, which partially scatters into an outgoing counter-current wave on each side of the horizon. The measured scattering amplitudes are compatible with the predictions of the hydrodynamical theory, where the kinematical description in terms of the effective metric is exact.
