Particle Production in the Interiors of Acoustic Black Holes

Phonon creation inside the horizons of acoustic black holes is investigated using two simple toy models. It is shown that, unlike what occurs in the exterior regions, the spectrum is not thermal. This non-thermality is due to the anomalous scattering that occurs in the interior regions.

Late time approach to Hawking radiation: terms beyond leading order

Black hole evaporation is studied using wave packets for the modes. These allow for approximate frequency and time resolution. The leading order late time behavior gives the well known Hawking radiation that is independent of how the black hole formed. The focus here is on the higher order terms and the rate at which they damp at late times. Some of these terms carry information about how the black hole formed. A general argument is given which shows that the damping is significantly slower (power law) than what might be naively expected from a stationary phase approximation (exponential). This result is verified by numerical calculations in the cases of 2D and 4D black holes that form from the collapse of a null shell.

Quantum-corrected black holes and naked singularities in (2+1)-dimensions

We analytically investigate the pertubative effects of a quantum conformally-coupled scalar field on rotating (2+1)-dimensional black holes and naked singularities. In both cases we obtain the quantum-backreacted metric analytically. In the black hole case, we explore the quantum corrections on different regions of relevance for a rotating black hole geometry. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the ergosphere, as well as to a reduction of the angular velocity compared to their corresponding unperturbed values. Quantum corrections also give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the naked singularity case, quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that hides the conical defect, thus turning it into a black hole. The fact that these effects occur not only for static but also for spinning geometries makes a strong case for the rôle of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in Nature.

Momentum distribution and coherence of a weakly interacting Bose gas after a quench

We consider a weakly interacting uniform atomic Bose gas with a time-dependent nonlinear coupling constant. By developing a suitable Bogoliubov treatment we investigate the time evolution of several observables, including the momentum distribution, the degree of coherence in the system, and their dependence on dimensionality and temperature. We rigorously prove that the low-momentum Bogoliubov modes remain frozen during the whole evolution, while the high-momentum ones adiabatically follow the change in time of the interaction strength. At intermediate momenta we point out the occurrence of oscillations, which are analogous to Sakharov oscillations. We identify two wide classes of time-dependent behaviors of the coupling for which an exact solution of the problem can be found, allowing for an analytic computation of all the relevant observables. A special emphasis is put on the study of the coherence property of the system in one spatial dimension. We show that the system exhibits a smooth "light-cone effect," with typically no prethermalization.

Quantum Backreaction on Three-Dimensional Black Holes and Naked Singularities

We analytically investigate backreaction by a quantum scalar field on two rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) geometries: that of a black hole and that of a naked singularity. In the former case, we explore the quantum effects on various regions of relevance for a rotating black hole space-time. We find that the quantum effects lead to a growth of both the event horizon and the radius of the ergosphere, and to a reduction of the angular velocity, compared to the unperturbed values. Furthermore, they give rise to the formation of a curvature singularity at the Cauchy horizon and show no evidence of the appearance of a superradiant instability. In the case of a naked singularity, we find that quantum effects lead to the formation of a horizon that shields it, thus supporting evidence for the rôle of quantum mechanics as a cosmic censor in nature.

Quantum dress for a naked singularity

We investigate semiclassical backreaction on a conical naked singularity space-time with a negative cosmological constant in (2+1)-dimensions. In particular, we calculate the renormalized quantum stress-energy tensor for a conformally coupled scalar field on such naked singularity space-time. We then obtain the backreacted metric via the semiclassical Einstein equations. We show that, in the regime where the semiclassical approximation can be trusted, backreaction dresses the naked singularity with an event horizon, thus enforcing cosmic censorship.

Scattering coefficients and gray-body factor for 1D BEC acoustic black holes: exact results

A complete set of exact analytic solutions to the mode equation is found in the region exterior to the acoustic horizon for a class of 1D Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) acoustic black holes. From these, analytic expressions for the scattering coefficients and gray-body factor are obtained. The results are used to verify previous predictions regarding the behaviors of the scattering coefficients and gray-body factor in the low frequency limit.

Fourth derivative gravity in the auxiliary fields representation and application to the black hole stability

We consider an auxiliary fields formulation for the general fourth-order gravity on an arbitrary curved background. The case of a Ricci-flat background is elaborated in full details and it is shown that there is an equivalence with the standard metric formulation. At the same time, using auxiliary fields helps to make perturbations to look simpler and the results more clear. As an application we reconsider the linear perturbations for the classical Schwarzschild solution. We also briefly discuss the relation to the effect of massive unphysical ghosts in the theory.

A scenario for critical scalar field collapse in $AdS_3$

We present a family of exact solutions, depending on two parameters $α$ and $b$ (related to the scalar field strength), to the three-dimensional Einstein-scalar field equations with negative cosmological constant $Λ$. For $b=0$ these solutions reduce to the static BTZ family of vacuum solutions, with mass $M = -α$. For $b\neq0$, the solutions become dynamical and develop a strong spacelike central singularity. The $α<0$ solutions are black-hole like, with a global structure topologically similar to that of the BTZ black holes, and a finite effective mass. We show that the near-singularity behavior of the solutions with $α>0$ agrees qualitatively with that observed in numerical simulations of subcritical collapse. We analyze the linear perturbations of the threshold solution, $α=0$, in the $Λ=0$ approximation, and find that it has only one unstable growing mode, which qualifies it as a candidate critical solution for scalar field collapse.

Gray-body factor and infrared divergences in 1D BEC acoustic black holes

It is shown that the gray-body factor for a one-dimensional elongated Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) acoustic black hole with one horizon does not vanish in the low-frequency ($ω\to 0$) limit. This implies that the analog Hawking radiation is dominated by the emission of an infinite number ($\frac{1}ω$) of soft phonons in contrast with the case of a Schwarzschild black hole where the gray-body factor vanishes as $ω\to 0$ and the spectrum is not dominated by low-energy particles. The infrared behaviors of certain correlation functions are also discussed.

Low frequency gray-body factors and infrared divergences: rigorous results

Formal solutions to the mode equations for both spherically symmetric black holes and Bose-Einstein condensate acoustic black holes are obtained by writing the spatial part of the mode equation as a linear Volterra integral equation of the second kind. The solutions work for a massless minimally coupled scalar field in the s-wave or zero angular momentum sector for a spherically symmetric black hole and in the longitudinal sector of a 1D Bose-Einstein condensate acoustic black hole. These solutions are used to obtain in a rigorous way analytic expressions for the scattering coefficients and gray-body factors in the zero frequency limit. They are also used to study the infrared behaviors of the symmetric two-point function and two functions derived from it: the point-split stress-energy tensor for the massless minimally coupled scalar field in Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime and the density-density correlation function for a Bose-Einstein condensate acoustic black hole.

The analog of the Hawking effect in BECs

The observation of the Hawking effect from black holes in the astrophysical context is unlikely. However, the analog of this effect is present in condensed matter systems. We focus on Bose-Einstein condensates, and on a proposal to detect it through correlation measurements.

Rotating black holes in massive gravity

We present a solution for rotating black holes in massive gravity. We first give a solution of massive gravity with one dynamical metric. Both metrics of this solution are expressed in the advanced Eddington-Finkelstein-like coordinates: the physical metric has the original Kerr line element, while the fiducial metric is flat, but written in a rotating Eddington-Finkelstein form. For the bi-gravity theory we give an analogue of this solution: the two metrics have the original Kerr form, but, in general, different black hole masses. The generalisation of the solution to include the electric charge is also given, it is an analogue of the Kerr-Newman solution in General Relativity. We also discuss further possible ways to generalise the solutions.

A class of charged black hole solutions in massive (bi)gravity

We present a new class of solutions describing charged black holes in massive (bi)gravity. For a generic choice of the parameters of the massive gravity action, the solution is the Reissner-Nordstrom-de Sitter metric written in the Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates for both metrics. We also study a special case of the parameters, for which the space of solutions contains an extra symmetry.

Stability analysis of black holes in massive gravity: a unified treatment

We consider the analytic solutions of massive (bi)gravity which can be written in a simple form using advanced Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. We analyse the stability of these solutions against radial perturbations. First we recover the previously obtained result on the instability of the bidiagonal bi-Schwarzschild solutions. In the non-bidiagonal case (which contains, in particular, the Schwarzschild solution with Minkowski fiducial metric) we show that generically there are physical spherically symmetric perturbations, but no unstable modes.

Amplifying the Hawking signal in BECs

We consider simple models of Bose-Einstein condensates to study analog pair-creation effects, namely the Hawking effect from acoustic black holes and the dynamical Casimir effect in rapidly time-dependent backgrounds. We also focus on a proposal by Cornell to amplify the Hawking signal in density-density correlators by reducing the atoms' interactions shortly before measurements are made.
