AdS vacua of non-supersymmetric strings

Few vacua are known for the three tachyon-free non-supersymmetric string theories. We find new classes of AdS backgrounds by focusing on spaces where the equations of motion reduce to purely algebraic conditions. Our first examples involve non-zero three-form fluxes supported either on direct product internal spaces or on $T_{p,q}$ geometries. For the ${\mathrm{SO}}(16)\times{\mathrm{SO}}(16)$ heterotic string, we then develop a method to engineer vacua with the addition of gauge fields. A formal Kaluza--Klein reduction yields complete solutions on a broad class of coset spaces $G/H$, automatically satisfying the three-form Bianchi identities with $H$-valued gauge fields.

Stability of non-supersymmetric vacua from calibrations

Supersymmetric vacua are protected from vacuum decay by energy positivity. No such argument is known for any non-supersymmetric vacua. In this paper, we try to extend to the latter a simpler argument based on calibrations, to at least protect them from decays mediated by D-brane bubbles, including their abelian bound states. We examine several classes of AdS$_4$ and AdS$_5$ solutions in type II string theory, including some new ones, involving coset spaces, sphere fibrations, Kähler--Einstein manifolds. Many of these vacua have resisted against all the decay channels we were able to assess. We also show how to use calibrations for the stability of D-branes already present in a non-supersymmetric solution.

A weakly non-abelian decay channel

We investigate non-abelian branes in curved space. We discuss solutions to the equations of motion of the transverse scalars when they are constant along the world-volume directions and obey an $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ or an $\mathfrak{su}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{su}(2)$ algebra. Motivated by the membrane version of the weak gravity conjecture, we specialise our results to non-abelian domain-wall D$(d-2)$ branes embedded in AdS$_d$ flux vacua. We find that they can be less self-attractive than their abelian counterpart, opening up a new decay-channel for vacua that resist all abelian domain-wall destabilisations. These branes come in two types, depending on whether their fuzziness involves the radial direction, or is purely internal. Only the latter can develop in vacua free from abelian decays. We illustrate our construction by embedding these branes in a variety of AdS vacua, destabilising some of them.

COMPOSITE-Stem

AI agents hold growing promise for accelerating scientific discovery; yet, a lack of frontier evaluations hinders adoption into real workflows. Expert-written benchmarks have proven effective at measuring AI reasoning, but most at this stage have become saturated and only measure performance on constrained outputs. To help address this gap, we introduce COMPOSITE-STEM, a benchmark of 70 expert-written tasks in physics, biology, chemistry, and mathematics, curated by doctoral-level researchers. Our benchmark combines exact-match grading and criterion-based rubrics with an LLM-as-a-jury grading protocol, allowing more flexible assessment of scientifically meaningful outputs. Using an adapted multimodal Terminus-2 agent harness within the Harbor agentic evaluation framework, we evaluate four frontier models. The top-performing model achieves 21%, demonstrating that COMPOSITE-STEM captures capabilities beyond current agent reach. All tasks are open-sourced with contributor permission to support reproducibility and to promote additional research towards AI's acceleration of scientific progress in these domains.

5d Higgs branch and instanton magnetization

Higgs branches of 5d $Sp(k)$ theories with $N_f$ flavours, whether at weak or strong coupling, are described by a pair of instantons transforming as pure spinors of $SO(2N_f)$. The Poisson structure is constrained by symmetry arguments and implies that these Higgs branches are algebraic integrable systems; the degeneration of the symplectic form occurs when the spinor annihilators overlap. We argue that the stratification of the Higgs branch at infinite coupling corresponds to the alignment of the instantons weights, leading to a non vanishing magnetization, and their acquisition of a mass.

Counting AdS Vacua

We study the 'number' $\mathfrak{N}(μ)$ of AdS vacua with a UV cut off $ μ$. It has been proposed that this number is finite. We find evidence that $\mathfrak{N}(μ)\sim a \ μ^{-b}$ as $μ\rightarrow 0$ for some constants $a$ and $b$ of $O(1)$ in Planck units that may depend on dimension and the number of supercharges. For this result to hold it is crucial to integrate over the volume of massless and tachyonic directions of AdS which corresponds to the volume of the space of marginal and relevant deformations of the dual CFT. We are led to the surprising prediction that theories with large number of light moduli contribute very little to the volume measure among all theories. We also speculate about the dS case leading to the number of quasi-dS vacua of the order of $Λ^{-α}$ for some $O(1)$ parameter $α$.

New punctures for six-dimensional compactifications

Six-dimensional superconformal field theories (SCFTs) give rise to four-dimensional (4d) ones when compactified on Riemann surfaces. In the $\mathcal{N}=(2,0)$ case, this yields the famous class S family. For $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ theories that arise from linear unitary quivers, the holographic duals of the 4d theories are known in massive IIA supergravity, but only without punctures. Working in the probe approximation, we identify all possible BPS punctures in these models and characterize them by computing their defect Weyl anomalies. For class S, our results reproduce the known expressions in the appropriate limit. In the more general $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ case, they predict new 4d SCFTs and their large-$N$ anomaly coefficients.

Cheng's eigenvalue comparison on metric measure spaces and applications

Using the localization technique, we prove a sharp upper bound on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of metric balls in essentially non-branching $\mathsf{CD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces. This extends a celebrated result of Cheng to the non-smooth setting of metric measure spaces satisfying Ricci curvature lower bounds in a synthetic sense, via optimal transport. Rigidity and stability statements are provided for $\mathsf{RCD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces; the stability seems to be new even for smooth Riemannian manifolds. We then present some mathematical and physical applications: in the former, we obtain an upper bound on the $j^{th}$ Neumann eigenvalue in essentially non-branching $\mathsf{CD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces and a bound on the essential spectrum in non-compact $\mathsf{RCD}^{\star}(K,N)$ spaces; in the latter, the eigenvalue bounds correspond to general upper bounds on the masses of the spin-2 Kaluza-Klein excitations around general warped compactifications of higher-dimensional theories of gravity.

Higher spins and Finsler geometry

Finsler geometry is a natural generalization of (pseudo-)Riemannian geometry, where the line element is not the square root of a quadratic form but a more general homogeneous function. Parameterizing this in terms of symmetric tensors suggests a possible interpretation in terms of higher-spin fields. We will see here that, at linear level in these fields, the Finsler version of the Ricci tensor leads to the curved-space Fronsdal equation for all spins, plus a Stueckelberg-like coupling. Nonlinear terms can also be systematically analyzed, suggesting a possible interacting structure. No particular choice of spacetime dimension is needed. The Stueckelberg mechanism breaks gauge transformations to a redundancy that does not change the geometry. This creates a serious issue: non-transverse modes are not eliminated, at least for the versions of Finsler dynamics examined in this paper.

A massive class of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ AdS$_4$ IIA solutions

We initiate a classification of $\mathcal{N} =2$ supersymmetric AdS$_4$ solutions of (massive) type IIA supergravity. The internal space is locally equipped with either an SU(2) or an identity structure. We focus on the SU(2) structure and determine the conditions it satisfies, dictated by supersymmetry. Imposing as an Ansatz that the internal space is complex, we reduce the problem of finding solutions to a Riccati ODE, which we solve analytically. We obtain in this fashion a large number of new families of solutions, both regular as well as with localized O8-planes and conical Calabi--Yau singularities. We also recover many solutions already discussed in the literature.

Superconformal anomalies for string defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N} = (1,0)$ SCFTs

We study the anomalies of two-dimensional BPS defects in six-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(1,0)$ superconformal field theories. Using a holographic description of these defects furnished by probe D4-branes in AdS${}_7$ solutions of ten-dimensional type IIA supergravity, we compute the two independent defect Weyl anomalies from the on-shell action for a spherical defect and defect sphere entanglement entropy. We find agreement between the holographic prediction for the defect A-type anomaly coming from the defect sphere free energy and the leading large $N$ contribution to the defect `t Hooft anomaly found using anomaly inflow. We also find agreement between the holographic computation of the expectation value of a surface operator wrapping a torus and the supersymmetric localization computation for a circular Wilson loop in $\mathcal{N}=1$ super Yang-Mills theory on $S^5$. Lastly, we holographically compute the defect gravitational anomaly from the Wess-Zumino action of the probe D4-brane, which provides a subleading large $N$ correction to the defect A-type anomaly.

Can you hear the Planck mass?

For the Laplacian of an $n$-Riemannian manifold $X$, the Weyl law states that the $k$-th eigenvalue is asymptotically proportional to $(k/V)^{2/n}$, where $V$ is the volume of $X$. We show that this result can be derived via physical considerations by demanding that the gravitational potential for a compactification on $X$ behaves in the expected $(4+n)$-dimensional way at short distances. In simple product compactifications, when particle motion on $X$ is ergodic, for large $k$ the eigenfunctions oscillate around a constant, and the argument is relatively straightforward. The Weyl law thus allows to reconstruct the four-dimensional Planck mass from the asymptotics of the masses of the spin 2 Kaluza--Klein modes. For warped compactifications, a puzzle appears: the Weyl law still depends on the ordinary volume $V$, while the Planck mass famously depends on a weighted volume obtained as an integral of the warping function. We resolve this tension by arguing that in the ergodic case the eigenfunctions oscillate now around a power of the warping function rather than around a constant, a property that we call weighted quantum ergodicity. This has implications for the problem of gravity localization, which we discuss. We show that for spaces with D$p$-brane singularities the spectrum is discrete only for $p =6,7,8$, and for these cases we rigorously prove the Weyl law by applying modern techniques from RCD theory.

Gravity from thermodynamics: optimal transport and negative effective dimensions

We prove an equivalence between the classical equations of motion governing vacuum gravity compactifications (and more general warped-product spacetimes) and a concavity property of entropy under time evolution. This is obtained by linking the theory of optimal transport to the Raychaudhuri equation in the internal space, where the warp factor introduces effective notions of curvature and (negative) internal dimension. When the Reduced Energy Condition is satisfied, concavity can be characterized in terms of the cosmological constant $Λ$; as a consequence, the masses of the spin-two Kaluza-Klein fields obey bounds in terms of $Λ$ alone. We show that some Cheeger bounds on the KK spectrum hold even without assuming synthetic Ricci lower bounds, in the large class of infinitesimally Hilbertian metric measure spaces, which includes D-brane and O-plane singularities. As an application, we show how some approximate string theory solutions in the literature achieve scale separation, and we construct a new explicit parametrically scale-separated AdS solution of M-theory supported by Casimir energy.

Timelike structures of ten-dimensional supersymmetry

In several contexts, supersymmetry can be reformulated in terms of calibrations, namely forms whose integrals measure minimal energies. It has been conjectured that this should be possible in general. For type II supergravity, we present a new system of equations which realizes this expectation. Besides the customary D-brane calibrations, it also includes NS5-brane and KK5-monopole calibrations. It is equivalent to supersymmetry under the assumption that the Killing vector associated to supersymmetry is timelike. No assumption is made on a factorization of spacetime. We also obtain a version of the system which is manifestly S-invariant and we present an application to near-horizon backgrounds. Using calibration, a definition of central charges in purely gravitational terms is given.

Harmonic functions and gravity localization

In models with extra dimensions, matter particles can be easily localized to a 'brane world', but gravitational attraction tends to spread out in the extra dimensions unless they are small. Strong warping gradients can help localize gravity closer to the brane. In this note we give a mathematically rigorous proof that the internal wave-function of the massless graviton is constant as an eigenfunction of the weighted Laplacian, and hence is a power of the warping as a bound state in an analogue Schrödinger potential. This holds even in presence of singularities induced by thin branes. We also reassess the status of AdS vacuum solutions where the graviton is massive. We prove a bound on scale separation for such models, as an application of our recent results on KK masses. We also use them to estimate the scale at which gravity is localized, without having to compute the spectrum explicitly. For example, we point out that localization can be obtained at least up to the cosmological scale in string/M-theory solutions with infinite-volume Riemann surfaces; and in a known class of N = 4 models, when the number of NS5- and D5-branes is roughly equal.

On ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetry enhancements in three dimensions

We introduce a class of 3d theories consisting of strongly-coupled ${\mathcal N}=4$ systems coupled to ${\mathcal N}=3$ Chern-Simons gauge multiplets, which exhibit ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements when a peculiar condition on the Chern-Simons levels is met. An example is the $SU(N)^3$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to the 3d $T_N$ theory, which enhances to ${\mathcal N}=4$ when $1/k_1+1/k_2+1/k_3=0$. We also show that some but not all of these ${\mathcal N}=4$ enhancements can be understood by considering M5-branes on a special class of Seifert manifolds. Our construction provides a large class of ${\mathcal N}=4$ theories which have not been studied previously.

On the Stability of String Theory Vacua

Vacuum compactifications may suffer from instabilities under small perturbations or tunnel effects; both are difficult to analyze. In this paper we consider the issue from a higher-dimensional perspective. We first look at how stability works for supersymmetric vacua, where it is widely expected to hold. We first show that the nucleation of brane bubbles in type II AdS compactifications is forbidden in the probe approximation by a simple argument involving pure spinors and calibrations. We then adapt familiar positive-energy theorems directly to M-theory and type II supergravity, rather than to their effective lower-dimensional reductions, also showing how to consistently include localised sources. We finally initiate an analysis of how these arguments might be extended to non-supersymmetric vacua. In M-theory, at the lower-derivative level, we find that the most natural modifications fail to stabilize the skew-whiffed and Englert vacua.

${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetric AdS$_3$ in 10 dimensions

Warped AdS$_3$ solutions in 10 dimensional supergravity that preserve ${\cal N}=(1,1)$ supersymmetry are considered. Sufficient geometric conditions for their existence, and to stop the AdS$_3$ factor experiencing an enhancement to AdS$_4$, are presented. The internal space of such solutions decomposes as a foliation of M$_6$ over an interval where M$_6$ supports either an SU(3)- or SU(2)-structure. The former case is classified in terms of torsion classes and new solutions are found
