Stringy T-duality on the lattice and the twisted Villain model

We address the question of whether dualities formulated in continuum field theory can be realised exactly at finite lattice spacing, rather than only emerging in the infrared. In this context, we construct a lattice framework for a genuinely stringy form of T-duality. We extend the exact lattice T-duality of the compact boson to curved backgrounds with non-trivial circle fibrations, where the duality is no longer exhausted by the familiar exchange of momentum and winding, but also involves global topological data. To this end, we define the twisted Villain model, which couples the lattice fibre field to cochains encoding the bundle connection and the fibre-horizontal component of the $B$-field. We realise this structure in lattice models for several fibred backgrounds and recover the characteristic bundle-flux exchange of T-duality. Using a half-gauging procedure, we derive the associated lattice defect action and show that it defines a topological defect. This establishes that the distinctive topological features of T-duality on curved manifolds can be captured exactly in a lattice model, implying that this duality is not tied to a particular continuum representation is present in lattice-regularised models.

Poles-zeros duality in semi-holographic Mott insulators

Inspired by the poles-zeros duality of Green's functions that appears in transitions into Mott-insulating phases in strongly correlated condensed matter systems, we propose a semi-holographic approach to Mott insulators. In this model, a fundamental fermion is coupled to a large-$N$, strongly interacting sector that generates a self-energy for the fundamental fermion's Green's function. This coupling amounts to a hybridization of the fundamental fermion with a strongly correlated fermionic composite. Within the holographic framework, at large $N$, the Green's function of the composite fermion naturally exhibits a poles-zeros duality. Zeros of the Green's function are caused by the poles of the self-energy that correspond to collective many-body excitations of the holographic strongly interacting sector. We calculate the spectral function of the fundamental fermion, from which we characterize the semi-holographic metallic and the Mott-insulating phases. In addition to the new physical interpretation of the zeros, our analysis yields a well-defined picture of the poles-zeros duality in terms of the freedom to choose between standard and alternative quantization in the strongly coupled sector.

Fracton Gauge Theories in Curved Spacetimes

Fractonic matter with dipole symmetry can be coupled to a two-index symmetric tensor gauge field. In this work, we show that this symmetric tensor field, along with other related generalized Maxwell theories, can be consistently coupled to curved backgrounds in a covariant and gauge-invariant way by reformulating dipole symmetry using conventional vector gauge fields. We identify a family of curved geometries where global dipole symmetry is preserved and derive energy-momentum conservation laws as Ward identities associated with background diffeomorphisms. Our results pave the way for future extensions, including generalizations to higher-order multipole theories.

On the stability of fracton gravity

We study the stability of fracton gravity, a variant of linearized gravity where the gauge symmetry is restricted to longitudinal diffeomorphisms. These transformations can be connected to a spacetime generalization of dipole symmetry, hence the tag fracton. We find that fracton gravity features an instability in the spin-1 sector corresponding to solutions with growing amplitude. This dynamical instability can be removed by tuning the couplings of the theory. Nonetheless, the Hamiltonian for the spin-1 modes remains always unbounded from below when evaluated on the classical solutions. We find no other sources of instability in the spin-2 or spin-0 sectors. We analyze in detail the canonical formulation and the constraints arguing that neither auxiliary fields nor gauge-fixing conditions can be employed to remove the problematic vector modes or stabilize them.

Spinodal slowing down and scaling in a holographic model

The dynamics of first-order phase transitions in strongly coupled systems are relevant in a variety of systems, from heavy ion collisions to the early universe. Holographic theories can be used to model these systems, with fluctuations usually suppressed. In this case the system can come close to a spinodal point where theory and experiments indicate that the the behaviour should be similar to a critical point of a second-order phase transition. We study this question using a simple holographic model and confirm that there is critical slowing down and scaling behaviour close to the spinodal point, with precise quantitative estimates. In addition, we determine the start of the scaling regime for the breakdown of quasistatic evolution when the temperature of a thermal bath is slowly decreased across the transition. We also extend the analysis to the dynamics of second-order phase transitions and strong crossovers.

Fracton gravity from spacetime dipole symmetry

Dipole charge conservation forces isolated charges to be immobile fractons. These couple naturally to spatial two-index symmetric tensor gauge fields that resemble a spatial metric. We propose a spacetime Lorentz covariant version of dipole symmetry and study the theory of the associated gauge fields. In the presence of a suitable background field, these contain a massive anti-symmetric and a massless symmetric two-index tensors. The latter transforms only under longitudinal diffeomorphisms, making the massless sector similar to linearized gravity, but with additional modes of lower spin. We show that the theory can be consistently coupled to a curved background metric and study its possible interaction terms with itself and with matter. In addition, we construct a map between solutions of linearized gravity in Kerr-Schild form and solutions of fracton gravity coupled to matter.

Dipole symmetry breaking and fractonic Nambu-Goldstone mode

We introduce a family of quantum field theories for fields carrying monopole and dipole charges. In contrast to previous realizations, fields have quadratic two-derivative kinetic terms. The dipole symmetry algebra is realized in a discretized internal space and connected to the physical space through a background gauge field. We study spontaneous symmetry breaking of dipole symmetry in 1+1 dimensions in a large-$N$ limit. The trivial classical vacuum is lifted by quantum corrections into a vacuum which breaks dipole symmetry while preserving monopole charge. By means of a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, heat-kernel and large-$N$ techniques, we compute the effective action for the low-energy modes. We encounter a fractonic immobile Nambu-Goldstone mode whose dispersion characteristics avoid Coleman-Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem independently of the large-$N$ limit.

Emergent Dipole Gauge Fields and Fractons

We present a realization of fracton-elasticity duality purely formulated in terms of ordinary gauge fields, encompassing standard elasticity and incommensurate crystals as those describing twisted bilayer graphene, quasicrystals or more general moiré lattices. Our construction comprises a description of all types of two-dimensional defects: disclinations, dislocations, discompressions and point-like defects, and takes into account body forces and impurities. The original form of the duality in terms of tensor gauge fields is recovered after partial gauge fixing. We identify the coupling of each type of defect to the dual gauge fields, and from gauge invariance we derive generalized continuity equations for the defect currents and the expected mobility restrictions of elasticity defects.

Comments on Holographic Level/Rank Dualities

We investigate a holographic realization in Type-IIB string theory of pure Chern-Simons theories, and focus on the level/rank dualities that they enjoy. The level/rank duality is established between the boundary theory, engineered utilizing D3-branes compactified on a $S^1$, and the theory on probe D7-branes located at a specific bulk location. Paying attention to the boundary conditions imposed on the Ramond-Ramond (RR) two- and six-forms, we show that holography precisely reproduces several different level/rank dual pairs. The $SL(2,\mathbf{Z})$ action relating all these theories is realized through the $SL(2,\mathbf{Z})$ electric/magnetic duality involving the RR potentials.

Bubble Wall Velocity at Strong Coupling

Using the holographic correspondence as a tool, we determine the steady-state velocity of expanding vacuum bubbles nucleated within chiral finite temperature first-order phase transitions occurring in strongly-coupled large $N$ QCD-like models. We provide general formulae for the friction force exerted by the plasma on the bubbles and for the steady-state velocity. In the top-down holographic description, the phase transitions are related to changes in the embedding of $Dq$-${\bar Dq}$ flavor branes probing the black hole background sourced by a stack of $N$ $Dp$-branes. We first consider the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto $D4$-$D8$-$\bar D8$ setup, compute the friction force and deduce the equilibrium velocity. Then we extend our analysis to more general setups and to different dimensions. Finally, we briefly compare our results, obtained within a fully non-perturbative framework, to other estimates of the bubble velocity in the literature.

Dark Holograms and Gravitational Waves

Spectra of stochastic gravitational waves (GW) generated in cosmological first-order phase transitions are computed within strongly correlated theories with a dual holographic description. The theories are mostly used as models of dark sectors. In particular, we consider the so-called Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, a $SU(N)$ gauge theory coupled to different matter fields in both the fundamental and the adjoint representations. The model has a well-known top-down holographic dual description which allows us to perform reliable calculations in the strongly coupled regime. We consider the GW spectra from bubble collisions and sound waves arising from two different kinds of first-order phase transitions: a confinement/deconfinement one and a chiral symmetry breaking/restoration one. Depending on the model parameters, we find that the GW spectra may fall within the sensibility region of ground-based and space-based interferometers, as well as of Pulsar Timing Arrays. In the latter case, the signal could be compatible with the recent potential observation by NANOGrav. When the two phase transitions happen at different critical temperatures, characteristic spectra with double frequency peaks show up. Moreover, in this case we explicitly show how to correct the redshift factors appearing in the formulae for the GW power spectra to account for the fact that adiabatic expansion from the first transition to the present times cannot be assumed anymore.

Fate of false vacua in holographic first-order phase transitions

Using the holographic correspondence as a tool, we study the dynamics of first-order phase transitions in strongly coupled gauge theories at finite temperature. Considering an evolution from the large to the small temperature phase, we compute the nucleation rate of bubbles of true vacuum in the metastable phase. For this purpose, we find the relevant configurations (bounces) interpolating between the vacua and we compute the related effective actions. We start by revisiting the compact Randall-Sundrum model at high temperature. Using holographic renormalization, we compute the kinetic term in the effective bounce action, that was missing in the literature. Then, we address the full problem within the top-down Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model. It displays both a confinement/deconfinement and a chiral symmetry breaking/restoration phase transition which, depending on the model parameters, can happen at different critical temperatures. For the confinement/deconfinement case we perform the numerical analysis of an effective description of the transition and also provide analytic expressions using thick and thin wall approximations. For the chiral symmetry transition, we implement a variational approach that allows us to address the challenging non-linear problem stemming from the Dirac-Born-Infeld action.

The Holographic QCD Axion

A holographic model of QCD axion is presented. It describes a composite axion in the KSVZ class. Having a gravity dual, based on the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, it is calculable in the strongly coupled regime. Its basic properties are derived, including the low energy Lagrangian, from which the axion couplings to nucleons can be derived. Basic features in the deconfined phase are studied as well. In particular, the temperature dependence of the axion mass is extracted from the topological susceptibility. As an aside, the topological susceptibility of strongly coupled ${\cal N}=4$ SYM at finite temperature is derived for the first time.
