The effects of explicit chiral symmetry breaking multiquark interactions on the spin 0 and 1 meson nonets: the ruling of the vector mesons

We have recently extended the scalar-pseudoscalar sector of a generalized NJL Lagrangian that includes all NLO non derivative interactions in Nc counting (including explicit symmetry breaking ones) in order to incorporate the spin 1 mesons in the low-lying ground state of QCD [1]. Upon bosonization, the well known mixing of the scalar-vector and of the pseudoscalar- axial-vector fields occurs in the quadratic part of the Lagrangian. We show that a linearized diagonalization of these terms can be effected in a completely general way without compromising the underlying symmetries of the Lagrangian [2]. The resulting spin 1 mass spectra evidence a relation involving only the vector and axial-vector meson masses and the constituent quark masses. We discuss the dominant role of this relation in the fits and we show that the model may be fitted to accommodate to a very good accuracy the 4 low-lying meson spectra.

A general framework to diagonalize vector--scalar and axial-vector--pseudoscalar transitions in the effective meson Lagrangian

A new mathematical framework for the diagonalization of the nondiagonal vector--scalar and axial-vector--pseudoscalar mixing in the effective meson Lagrangian is described. This procedure has unexpected connections with the Hadamard product of $n\times n$ matrices describing the couplings, masses, and fields involved. The approach is shown to be much more efficient as compared with the standard methods employed previously. The difference is especially noticeable if the chiral symmetry is broken explicitly. The paper ends with an illustrative application to the chiral model with broken $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ symmetry.

Spin 1 low lying meson spectra and the subtle link to the spin 0 mesons

An NJL-type three-flavor quark model with a complete set of explicit chiral symmetry breaking terms is extended to include vector and axial vector effective interaction terms. The bosonized Lagrangian is written up to quadratic order in the bosonic fields and the role of the new interactions is analysed in detail. The model's parameters are fitted to yield reasonable values to the four low-lying spin 0 and spin 1 meson nonets' masses.

Masses of the lowest spin-0 and spin-1 meson nonets: explicit symmetry breaking effects

We extend a known multi-quark three-flavor Lagrangian of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type, which includes a set of effective interactions proportional to the current quark masses, to include the multi-quark interactions of vector and axial-vector types. It is shown that the mass spectrum of the four low-lying meson nonets are in agreement with current phenomenological expectations. The role of the new interactions is analyzed in detail.

The $π^0-η-η'$ mixing in a generalized multi-quark interaction scheme

We investigate the isospin symmetry breaking effects within a recently derived Nambu-Jona-Lasinio related model by fitting the measured pseudoscalar meson masses and weak decay couplings $f_π$, $f_K$. Our model contains the next to leading order terms in the $1/N_c$ expansion of the effective multi-quark Lagrangian, including the ones that break the chiral symmetry explicitly. We show the important phenomenological role of these interactions: (1) they lead to an accurate fit of the low-lying pseudoscalar nonet characteristics; (2) they account for a very good agreement of the current quark masses with the present PDG values; (3) they reduce by $40\%$ the ratio $ε/ε'$ of the $π_0-η$ and $π_0-η'$ mixing angles, as compared to the case that contemplates explicit breaking only in the leading order, bringing it in consonance with the quoted values in the literature. The conventional NJL-type models fail in the joint description of these parameters.

Pion quadrupole polarizabilities in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

We present the results for the pion electromagnetic quadrupole polarizabilities, calculated within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. We obtain the sign and magnitude in agreement with the respective experimental analysis based on the Dispersion Sum Rules. At the same time the dipole polarizabilities are well reproduced. Comparison is also made with the results from the Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Quadrupole polarizabilities of the pion in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model

The electromagnetic dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the neutral and charged pions are calculated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. Our results agree with the recent experimental analysis of these quantities based on Dispersion Sum Rules. Comparison is made with the results from the Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Explicit chiral symmetry breaking and the 1/N expansion in models with multi-fermion interactions

Explicit chiral symmetry breaking is a natural feature of many QCD inspired models with multi-quark interactions. To carry out the 1/N expansion of these theories, one integrates over the quark fields. In the process of calculating the one-loop fermion determinant which is not chiral invariant due to quark masses, special care must be taken in order not to alter the original symmetry breaking pattern of the Lagrangian. We show how to do this consistently.

Analytic perturbation theory versus 1/N expansion in the Gross-Neveu model

The 1/N expansion can be successfully used to calculate the Green functions of the two-dimensional O(2N) Gross - Neveu model. In parallel, the methods of analytic perturbation theory are also applied. Comparing the results of these two calculations at leading order, we report on the surprising agreement between them.

Effects of eight-quark interactions on the hadronic vacuum and mass spectra of light mesons

The combined effective low energy QCD Lagrangians of Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and 't Hooft are supplemented with eight-quark interactions. This work is a follow-up of recent findings, namely (i) the six quark flavour determinant 't Hooft term destabilizes the NJL vacuum, (ii) the addition of a chiral invariant eight-fermion contact term renders the ground state of the theory globally stable; (iii) stability constrains the values of coupling constants of the model, meaning that even in the presence of eight-quark forces the system can be unstable in a certain parameter region. In the present work we study a phenomenological output of eight-quark interactions considering the mass spectra of pseudoscalar and scalar mesons. Mixing angles are obtained and their equivalence to the two angle approach is derived. We show that the masses of pseudoscalars are almost neutral to the eight-quark forces. The only marked effect of the second order in the SU(3) breaking is found in the $η-η'$ system. The scalars are more sensitive to the eight-quark interactions. A strong repulsion between the singlet-octet members is the reason for the obtained low mass of the $σ$ state within the model considered.

The Role of hidden ambiguities in the Linear Sigma Model with fermions

The $U_L(3)\times U_R(3)$ Linear Sigma Model (LSM) with quark degrees of freedom is used to show that radiative corrections generate undetermined finite contributions. Their origin is related to surface terms which are differences between divergent integrals with the same degree of divergence. The technique used to detect these ambiguities is an implicit regularization on basic divergent integrals that do not depend on external momenta. We show that such contributions are absorbed by renormalization or fixed by symmetry requirements. The general expression for surface terms is derived. Renormalization group coefficients are calculated, as well as relevant observables for this model, such as $f_π$, $f_k$ and the pion and kaon form factors.

Functional Integral Approaches to the Bosonization of Effective Multi-Quark Interactions with $U_\A(1)$ Breaking

Low energy hadron phenomenology involving the (u,d,s) quarks is often approached through effective multi-quark Lagrangians with the symmetries of QCD. A very successful approach consists in taking the four-quark Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Lagrangian with the chiral $U_L(3)\times U_R(3)$ symmetry in the massless limit, combined with the $U_\A(1)$ breaking six-quark flavour determinant interaction of 't Hooft. We review the present status and some very recent developments related to the functional integration over the cubic term in auxiliary mesonic variables that one introduces to bosonize the system. Various approaches for handling this functional, which cannot be integrated exactly, are discussed: the stationary phase approximation, the perturbative expansion, the loop expansion, their interrelation and importance for the evaluation of the effective action. The intricate group structure rules out the method of Airy's integral. The problem of the instability of the vacuum is stated and a solution given by including eight-quark interactions.

Multi-quark interactions with a globally stable vacuum

It is shown that $U(3)_L\times U(3)_R$ eight-quark interactions stabilize the asymmetric ground state of the well-known model with four-quark Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio and six-quark 't Hooft interactions. The result remains when the reduced SU(3) f\mbox{}lavour symmetry is explicitly broken by the general current quark mass term with $\hat{m}_u\neq\hat{m}_d\neq\hat{m}_s$.

Stationary phase corrections in the process of bosonization of multi-quark interactions

The functional integration over the auxiliary bosonic variables of cubic order related with the effective action of the Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio model with 't Hooft term has recently been obtained in the form of a loop expansion. Even numbers of loops contribute to the action, while odd numbers of loops are assigned to the measure. We consider the two-loop corrections and analyse their effect on the low-lying pseudoscalar and scalar mass spectra, quark condensates and weak decay constants. The results are compared to the leading order calculations and other approaches.

Aspects of U_A(1) breaking in the Nambu and Jona-Lasinio model

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction, which breaks the unwanted U_A (1) symmetry of QCD, is a source of perturbative corrections to the leading order result formed by the four-quark forces with the U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetry. A detailed quantitative calculation is carried out to bosonize the model by the functional integral method. We concentrate our efforts on finding ways to integrate out the auxiliary bosonic variables. The functional integral over these variables cannot be evaluated exactly. We show that the modified stationary phase approach leads to a resummation within the perturbative series and calculate the integral in the ``two-loop'' approximation. The result is a correction to the effective mesonic Lagrangian which may be important for the low-energy spectrum and dynamics of the scalar and pseudoscalar nonets.

Perturbative approach to U_A(1) breaking

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction is considered in combination with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetric Lagrangian. We discuss the bosonization of this multi-quark interaction, taking the U_A(1) breaking as a perturbation. We discuss its relation with the usual approach.

The 't Hooft determinant resolution of the eta' puzzle

The six-quark instanton induced 't Hooft interaction, which breaks the unwanted U_A(1) symmetry of QCD, is also a sourse of semi-classical corrections to the low energy effective action. It is argued that there emerges a dimensionless expansion parameter that introduces a new mass scale, Lambda_E^2=6 GeV^2, in the 0^-, 0^+ channels. This scale plays a similar role as the large critical mass M^2_crit > 4.2-6.6 GeV^2 discovered in the framework of QCD sum rules in the 0^-, 0^+ gluonic channels. In particular, it allows to resolve the eta' puzzle. To extract Lambda_E we calculate the masses of the lightest pseudoscalar meson nonet by using the Nambu --Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type U_L(3)X U_R(3) chiral symmetric Lagrangian together with the 't Hooft determinant. The mechanism which leads to the large value of Lambda_E is scrutinized.
