Path Integral Bosonization of the 't Hooft Determinant: Quasiclassical Corrections

The many-fermion Lagrangian which includes the 't Hooft six-quark flavor mixing interaction (N_f=3) and the U_L(3)\times U_R(3) chiral symmetric four-quark Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (NJL) type interactions is bosonized by the path integral method. The method of the steepest descents is used to derive the effective quark-mesonic Lagrangian with linearized many-fermion vertices. We obtain, additionally to the known lowest order stationary phase result of Reinhardt and Alkofer, the next to leading order (NLO) contribution arising from quantum fluctuations of auxiliary bosonic fields around their stationary phase trajectories (the Gaussian integral contribution). Using the gap equation we construct the effective potential, from which the structure of the vacuum can be settled. For some set of parameters the effective potential has several extrema, that in the case of SU(2)_I\times U(1)_Y flavor symmetry can be understood on topological grounds. With increasing strength of the fluctuations the spontaneously broken phase gets unstable and the trivial vacuum is restored. The effective potential reveals furthermore the existence of logarithmic singularities at certain field expectation values, signalizing caustic regions.

't Hooft determinant: Fluctuatioins and Multiple Vacua

The 't Hooft six quark flavor mixing interaction (N_f=3) is bosonized by the path integral method. The considered complete Lagrangian is constructed on the basis of the combined 't Hooft and U(3)X U(3) extended chiral four fermion Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio interactions. The method of the steepest descents is used to derive the effective mesonic Lagrangian. Additionally to the known lowest order stationary phase (SP) result of Reinhardt and Alkofer we obtain the contribution from the small quantum fluctuations of bosonic configurations around their stationary phase trajectories. Fluctuations give rise to multivalued solutions of the gap equations, marked at instances by drastic changes in the quark condensates, a novel scenario for the vacuum state of hadrons at low energies.

Generalized Heat Kernel Coefficients for a New Asymptotic Expansion

The method which allows for asymptotic expansion of the one-loop effective action W=ln det A is formulated. The positively defined elliptic operator A= U + M^2 depends on the external classical fields taking values in the Lie algebra of the internal symmetry group G. Unlike the standard method of Schwinger - DeWitt, the more general case with the nondegenerate mass matrix M=diag(m1,m2,...) is considered. The first coefficients of the new asymptotic series are calculated and their relationship with the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients is clarified.

Path integral bosonization of the 't Hooft determinant: fluctuations and multiple vacua

The 't Hooft six quark flavor mixing interaction (N_f=3) is bosonized by the path integral method. The considered complete Lagrangian is constructed on the basis of the combined 't Hooft and U(3)X U(3) extended chiral four fermion Nambu-Jona-Lasinio interactions. It affects the vacuum state of hadrons at low energies: whereas without the inclusion of quantum fluctuations the vacuum is uniquely defined for a fixed set of the model parameters, fluctuations give rise to multivalued solutions of the gap equations, marked at instances by drastic changes in the quark condensates. We derive the new gap equations and analyse them in comparison with known results. We classify the solutions according to the number of extrema they may accomodate. We find up to four solutions in the 0<m_(u,s)<3$ GeV region.

Implications of a New Effective Chiral Meson Lagrangian

Based on a recently derived effective chiral meson Lagrangian from the extended SU(2)\otimes SU(2) Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model, in the linear realization of chiral symmetry, we extract to leading order in the 1/N_c expansion all associated relevant three-point functions ρ\to ππ, σ\to ππ, a_1 \to ρπ, a_1 \to σπ, as well as the amplitude for ππscattering. We discuss the formal differences of these amplitudes as compared with those derived in the literature and calculate the associated decay widths and scattering parameters. The differences have two origins: i) new terms, which are proportional to the current quark mass and arise from taking the correct NJL vacuum from the first steps in a proper-time expansion, are present in the Lagrangian; ii) an implemented chiral covariant treatment of the diagonalization in the pseudoscalar - axialvector sector induces new couplings between three or more mesonic fields. Both effects have been derived from the chiral Ward Takahashi identities, which are fully taken into account at each order of the proper-time expansion.

Inverse Mass Expansion of the One-Loop Effective Action

A method is described for the development of the one-loop effective action expansion as an asymptotic series in inverse powers of the fermion mass. The method is based on the Schwinger-DeWitt proper-time technique, which allows for loop particles with non-degenerate masses. The case with SU(2)xSU(2) as the symmetry group is considered. The obtained novel series generalizes the well-known Schwinger-De Witt inverse mass expansion for equal masses, and is chiral invariant at each order. We calculate the asymptotic coefficients up to fifth order and clarify their relationship with the standard Seeley-DeWitt coefficients.

Large Mass Invariant Asymptotics of the Effective Action

We study the large mass asymptotics of the Dirac operator with a nondegenerate mass matrix m={diag}(m_1,m_2,m_3) in the presence of scalar and pseudoscalar background fields taking values in the Lie algebra of the U(3) group. The corresponding one-loop effective action is regularized by the Schwinger's proper-time technique. Using a well-known operator identity, we obtain a series representation for the heat kernel which differs from the standard proper-time expansion, if m_1\ne m_2\ne m_3. After integrating over the proper-time we use a new algorithm to resum the series. The invariant coefficients which define the asymptotics of the effective action are calculated up to the fourth order and compared with the related Seeley-DeWitt coefficients for the particular case of a degenerate mass matrix with m_1=m_2=m_3.

Effective Chiral Meson Lagrangian For The Extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

We present a derivation of the low-energy effective meson Lagrangian of the extended Nambu -- Jona-Lasinio (ENJL) model. The case with linear realization of broken $SU(2)\times SU(2)$ chiral symmetry is considered. There are two crucial points why this revision is needed. Firstly it is the explicit chiral symmetry breaking effect. On the basis of symmetry arguments we show that relevant contributions related with the current quark mass terms are absent from the effective Lagrangians derived so far in the literature. Secondly we suggest a chiral covariant way to avoid non-diagonal terms responsible for the pseudoscalar -- axial-vector mixing from the effective meson Lagrangian. In the framework of the linear approach this diagonalization has not been done correctly. We discuss as well the $SU(2)\times SU(2)/SU(2)$ coset space parametrization for the revised Lagrangian (nonlinear ansatz). Our Lagrangian differs in an essential way from those that have been derived till now on the basis of both linear and nonlinear realizations of chiral symmetry.

One-loop fermion determinant with explicit chiral symmetry breaking

We use a proper-time regularization to define the one-loop fermion determinant for the case in which explicit chiral symmetry breaking takes place. We show how to obtain the polynomial by which the standard definition of lndetD needs to be modified in order to arrive at the fermion determinant whose transformation properties are consistent with the general symmetry requirements of the basic Lagrangian. As an example it is shown how the fundamental symmetries and the explicit chiral symmetry breaking pattern associated with the ENJL model are preserved in a consistent way.
