Generalized Devil's staircase and RG flows

We discuss a two-parameter renormalization group (RG) flow when parameters are organized in a single complex variable, $τ$, with modular properties. Throughout the work we consider a special limit when the imaginary part of $τ$ characterizing the disorder strength tends to zero. We argue that generalized Riemann-Thomae (gRT) function and the corresponding generalized Devil's staircase emerge naturally in a variety of physical models providing a universal behavior. In 1D we study the Anderson-like probe hopping in a weakly disordered lattice, recognize the origin of the gRT function in the spectral density of the probe and formulate specific RG procedure which gets mapped onto the discrete flow in the fundamental domain of the modular group $SL(2,Z)$. In 2D we consider the generalization of the phyllotaxis crystal model proposed by L. Levitov and suggest the explicit form of the effective potential for the probe particle propagating in the symmetric and asymmetric 2D lattice of defects. Analyzing the structure of RG flow equations in the vicinity of saddle points we claim emergence of BKT-like transitions at ${\rm Im}\,τ\to 0$. We show that the RG-like dynamics in the fundamental domain of $SL(2,Z)$ for asymmetric lattices asymptotically approaches the "Silver ratio". For a Hubbard model of particles on a ring interacting via long-ranged potentials we investigate the dependence of the ground state energy on the potential and demonstrate by combining numerical and analytical tools the emergence of the generalized Devil's staircase. Also we conjecture a bridge between a Hubbard model and a phyllotaxis.

Anatomy of the fragmented Hilbert space: eigenvalue tunneling, quantum scars and localization in the perturbed random regular graph

We consider the properties of the random regular graph with node degree $d$ perturbed by chemical potentials $μ_k$ for a number of short $k$-cycles. We analyze both numerically and analytically the phase diagram of the model in the $(μ_k,d)$ plane. The critical curve separating the homogeneous and clusterized phases is found and it is demonstrated that the clusterized phase itself generically is separated as the function of $d$ into the phase with ideal clusters and phase with coupled ones when the continuous spectrum gets formed. The eigenstate spatial structure of the model is investigated and it is found that there are localized scar-like states in the delocalized part of the spectrum, that are related to the topologically equivalent nodes in the graph. We also reconsider the localization of the states in the non-perturbative band formed by eigenvalue instantons and find the semi-Poisson level spacing distribution. The Anderson transition for the case of combined ($k$-cycle) structural and diagonal (Anderson) disorders is investigated. It is found that the critical diagonal disorder gets reduced sharply at the clusterization phase transition, but does it unevenly in non-perturbative and mid-spectrum bands, due to the scars, present in the latter. The applications of our findings to $2$d quantum gravity are discussed.

Information geometry and synchronization phase transition in Kuramoto model

We discuss the recently proposed description of Kuramoto model in terms of hyperbolic space and relate it to the information geometry. In particular the dynamical equation in Kuramoto all-to-all model is identified with the gradient flow of the Kullback-Leibner divergence on the statistical manifold. The Fisher information metric is evaluated for the Kuramoto and Kuramoto-Shakagichi models. We argue that the components of Fisher metric diverge at the critical point hence it can be used as an alternative order parameter for the synchronization phase transition.

Page time and the order parameter for a consciousness state

In this short note using the analogy with the recent resolution of the black hole information paradox we conjecture the order parameter for the state of consciousness based on the notion of the Page curve and the Page time. The entanglement between the state of the brain and time series of neuronal firing as well as the non-orthogonality of the functional connectomes play a key role.

A Flow in the Forest

Using the matrix-forest theorem and the Parisi-Sourlas trick we formulate and solve a one-matrix model with non-polynomial potential which provides perturbation theory for massive spinless fermions on dynamical planar graphs. This is a lattice version of 2d quantum gravity coupled to massive spinless fermions. Our model equivalently describes the ensemble of spanning forests on the same graphs. The solution is formulated in terms of an elliptic curve. We then focus on a near-critical scaling limit when both the graphs and the trees in the forests are macroscopically large. In this limit we obtain universal one-point scaling functions (condensates), parameterized in terms of the Lambert function. Our results provide a rare example where one can explore the flow between two gravity models -- in this case, the theories of conformal matter coupled to 2d gravity with c=-2 (large trees regime) and c=0 (small trees regime). We also compute the disc partition functions with Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in the same critical limit.

Eigenvalue detachment, BBP transition and constrained Brownian motion

We discuss the eigenvalue detachment transition in terms of scaling of fluctuations in ensembles of paths located near convex boundaries of various physical nature. We consider numerically the BBP-like (Baik-Ben Arous-Péché) transition from the Gaussian to the Tracy-Widom scaling of fluctuations in several statistical systems for both canonical and microcanonical ensembles and identify the corresponding control parameter in each case. In particular, for fixed path length (microcanonical) ensemble of paths located in the vicinity of a partially permeable semicircle, the transition occurs at the critical value of a permeability. The Tracy-Widom regime and the BBP-like transition for fluctuations are discussed in terms of the Jakiw-Teitelbom (JT) gravity with a radial cutoff which, in turn, has an interpretation as a ensemble of fixed length world-line geometrically constrained trajectories of a charged particle in an effective transversal magnetic field.

Synchronization on star-like graphs and emerging $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ symmetries at strong coupling

We discuss the aspects of synchronization on inhomogeneous star-like graphs with long rays in Kuramoto model framework. We assume the positive correlation between internal frequencies and degrees for all nodes which supports the abrupt first order synchronization phase transition. It is found that different ingredients of the graph get synchronized at different critical couplings. Combining numerical and analytic tools we evaluate all critical couplings for the long star graph. Surprisingly it is found that at strong coupling there are discrete values of coupling constant which support the synchronized states with emerging $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ symmetries. The stability of synchronized phase is discussed and the interpretation of phase with emerging $\mathbb{Z}_{p}$ symmetry for the Josephson array on long star graph is mentioned.

K-clique percolation in free association networks. The mechanism behind the $7 \pm 2 $ law ?

It is important to reveal the mechanisms of propagation in different cognitive networks. In this study we discuss the k-clique percolation phenomenon on the free association networks including "English Small World of Words project" (SWOW-EN). We compare different semantic networks and networks of free associations for different languages. Surprisingly it turned out that $k$-clique percolation for all $k<k_c=(6-7)$ is possible on SWOW-EN and Dutch language network. Our analysis suggests the new universality patterns for a community organization of free association networks. We conjecture that our result can provide the qualitative explanation of the Miller's $7\pm 2$ rule for the capacity limit of working memory. The new model of network evolution extending the preferential attachment is suggested which provides the observed value of $k_c$.

Double Inozemtsev Limits of the Quantum DELL System

In this letter we study various Inozemtsev-type limits of the quantum double elliptic (DELL) system when both elliptic parameters are sent to zero at different rates, while the coupling constant is sent to infinity, such that a certain combination of the three parameters is kept fixed. We find a regime in which such double Inozemtsev limit of DELL produces the elliptic Ruijsenaars-Schneider (eRS) Hamiltonians albeit in an unconventional normalization. We discuss other double scaling limits and anisotropic scaling of coordinates and momenta. In addition, we provide a formal expression for the eigenvalues of the eRS Hamiltonians solely in terms of their eigenfunctions.

Interacting Thermofield Doubles and Critical Behavior in Random Regular Graphs

We discuss numerically the non-perturbative effects in exponential random graphs which are analogue of eigenvalue instantons in matrix models. The phase structure of exponential random graphs with chemical potential for 4-cycles and degree preserving constraint is clarified. The first order phase transition at critical value of chemical potential for 4-cycles into bipartite phase with a formation of fixed number of bipartite clusters is found for ensemble of random regular graphs (RRG). We consider the similar phase transition in combinatorial quantum gravity based of the Ollivier graph curvature for RRG supplemented with hard-core constraint and show that a order of a phase transition and the structure of emerging phase depend on a vertex degree d in RRG. For d = 3 the bipartite closed ribbon emerges at bipartite phase while for d > 3 the ensemble of isolated or weakly interacting hypercubes supplemented with the bipartite closed ribbon gets emerged at the first order phase transition with a clear-cut hysteresis. If the additional connectedness condition is imposed the bipartite phase gets identified as the closed chain of weakly coupled hypercubes. Since the ground state of isolated hypercube is the thermofield double (TFD) we suggest that the dual holographic picture involves multiboundary wormholes. Treating RRG as a model of a Hilbert space for a interacting many-body system we discuss the patterns of the Hilbert space fragmentation at the phase transition. We also briefly comment on a possible relation of the found phase transition to the problem of holographic interpretation of a partial deconfinement transition in the gauge theories.

Lifshitz tails at spectral edge and holography with a finite cutoff

We propose the holographic description of the Lifshitz tail typical for one-particle spectral density of bounded disordered system in $D=1$ space. To this aim the "polymer representation" of the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) 2D dilaton gravity at a finite cutoff is used and the corresponding partition function is considered as the weighted sum over paths of fixed length in an external magnetic field. We identify the regime of small loops, responsible for emergence of a Lifshitz tail in the Gaussian disorder, and relate the strength of disorder to the boundary value of the dilaton. The geometry corresponding to the Poisson disorder in the boundary theory involves random paths fluctuating in the vicinity of the hard impenetrable cut-off disc in a 2D plane. It is shown that the ensemble of "stretched" paths evading the disc possesses the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) scaling for fluctuations, which is the key property that ensures the dual description of the Lifshitz tail in the spectral density for the Poisson disorder.

On Dimensional Transmutation in 1+1D Quantum Hydrodynamics

Recently a detailed correspondence was established between, on one side, four and five-dimensional large-N supersymmetric gauge theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry and adjoint matter, and, on the other side, integrable 1+1-dimensional quantum hydrodynamics. Under this correspondence the phenomenon of dimensional transmutation, familiar in asymptotically free QFTs, gets mapped to the transition from the elliptic Calogero-Moser many-body system to the closed Toda chain. In this paper we attempt to formulate the hydrodynamical counterpart of the dimensional transmutation phenomenon inspired by the identification of the periodic Intermediate Long Wave (ILW) equation as the hydrodynamical limit of the elliptic Calogero-Moser/Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. We also conjecture that the chiral flow in the vortex fluid provides the proper framework for the microscopic description of such dimensional transmutation in the 1+1d hydrodynamics. We provide a geometric description of this phenomenon in terms of the ADHM moduli space.

Equilibrium mean-field-like statistical models with KPZ scaling

We have considered three different "one-body" statistical systems involving Brownian excursions, which possess for fluctuations Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling with the critical exponent $ν=\frac{1}{3}$. In all models imposed external constraints push the underlying stochastic process to a large deviation regime. Specifically, we have considered fluctuations for: (i) Brownian excursions on non-uniform finite trees with linearly growing branching originating from the mean-field approximation of the Dumitriu-Edelman representation of matrix models, (ii) (1+1)D "magnetic" Dyck paths within the strip of finite width, (iii) inflated ideal polymer ring with fixed gyration radius. In the latter problem cutting off the long-ranged spatial fluctuations and leaving only the "typical" modes for stretched paths, we ensure the KPZ-like scaling for bond fluctuations. To the contrary, summing up all normal modes, we get the Gaussian behavior. In all considered models, KPZ fluctuations emerge in presence of two complementary conditions: (i) the trajectories are pushed to a large deviation region of a phase space, and (ii) the trajectories are leaning on an impenetrable boundary.

SYK Superconductivity: Quantum Kuramoto and Generalized Richardson Models

Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model has emerged as a new paradigm of the non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Here we investigate a possibility of having a superconducting off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) and a pseudogap phase within the SYK framework. We found that ODLRO may be established in spin-1/2 version of the model with the time-reversal invariance and an extra attractive interaction. If the latter is taken as the on-site negative-$U$ Hubbard term, it leads to the pseudogap phase at $U<U_c$ dominated by quantum fluctuations of local phases. These fluctuations are described by a quantum version of the Kuramoto model, traditionally employed to illustrate synchronization of classical non-linear oscillators. In the opposite limit of large $U$, the SYK+Hubbard model is approaching a certain generalization of the integrable Richardson model. We present exact diagonalization studies, along with analytic solutions of the aforementioned limiting cases. We also discuss possible holographic interpretations of the model, ODLRO and the pseudogap.

Toda chain flow in Krylov space

We show in full generality that time-correlation function of a physical observable analytically continued to imaginary time is a tau-function of integrable Toda hierarchy. Using this relation we show that the singularity along the imaginary axis, which is a generic behavior for quantum non-integrable many-body system, is due to delocalization in Krylov space.

Two faces of Douglas-Kazakov transition: from Yang-Mills theory to random walks and beyond

Being inspired by the connection between 2D Yang-Mills (YM) theory and (1+1)D "vicious walks" (VW), we consider different incarnations of large-$N$ Douglas-Kazakov (DK) phase transition in gauge field theories and stochastic processes focusing at possible physical interpretations. We generalize the connection between YM and VW, study the influence of initial and final distributions of walkers on the DK phase transition, and describe the effect of the $θ$-term in corresponding stochastic processes. We consider the Jack stochastic process involving Calogero-type interaction between walkers and investigate the dependence of DK transition point on a coupling constant. Relying on the relation between large-$N$ 2D $q$-YM and extremal black hole (BH) with large-$N$ magnetic charge, we speculate about a physical interpretation of a DK phase transitions in a 4D extremal charged BH.

Toward the Pole

We study the analytic structure of semiclassical conformal blocks, namely of the 1-point conformal block on the torus and of the 4-point conformal block on the sphere, as functions of the intermediate dimension. We interpret their discontinuities, which can be revealed with the use of a particular resummation procedure, holographically in terms of configurations of geodesics in AdS3. In other words, we study the behavior of the $Ω$-deformed $\mathcal N=2$ SYM theory in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit near those singular points, where naively the W-boson with non-vanishing angular momentum becomes massless. Upon a proper resummation of instanton contributions, these singularities disappear, which is similar to the Seiberg-Witten solution in the undeformed case where there is no massless W-boson. It is shown that the order parameter undergoes a non-analytic behavior near positions of the poles. The jump of the order parameter is interpreted holographically in terms of geodesic networks

Flavored extended instanton in QCD

In this paper we discuss new flavored space-like defects in confined QCD which can be considered as the Euclidean extended instantons carrying the topologically quantized currents. We focus on the simplest 1d space-like defect - the S-Skyrmion solution extended in one space coordinate and localized in Euclidean time. It can be identified both in the holographic QCD and in the Chiral Perturbation Theory(ChPT). The Skyrmion charges get transformed into the corresponding currents for S-Skyrmion. The analogy with the Thouless pump and the quantum phase slip phenomena is mentioned.
