The influence of the transverse electric field on accelerating vortex state in the axisymmetric electric field

The relativistic vortex states of massive charged particles propagating in non-uniform axisymmetric electric field are studied. Starting from the stationary-state equation after the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation and employing the paraxial approximation, the coupled evolution equations for the beam width, wavefront curvature, and Gouy phase are derived. The equations are solved numerically for a quadratic electrostatic potential, an immersion lens, and an einzel lens. The essential influence of the transverse field on beam evolution is demonstrated. The results provide a relativistic quantum framework for controlling accelerated vortex particle beams using electrostatic fields.

Orbital angular momentum radiation and polarization of relativistic electrons in magnetic fields

While spin polarization from synchrotron radiation is well established, the polarization of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in such radiative processes remains elusive. We study radiation and polarization of relativistic electrons in a uniform magnetic field, focusing on OAM polarization radiation for vortex electrons which carry intrinsic OAM. The results illustrate that transition rates are asymmetric in the low-photon-energy regime, favoring OAM decrease, analogous to the spin-flip asymmetry in the Sokolov-Ternov effect. Under these conditions, synchrotron radiation can polarize the OAM. The characteristic relaxation time and stationary-state OAM distribution are obtained analytically. The polarization of spin about \(\mathcal{P}_{\text{spin}}\) reaches \(92.38\%\), while that of \(\mathcal{P}_{\text{OAM}}\) can even approach almost unity for a large OAM; however, their polarization behaviors are different. For typical storage ring parameters, the OAM polarization time is orders of magnitude shorter than the spin polarization time. Thus, synchrotron radiation offers a mechanism for controlling vortex electron beams which carry OAM for high-energy accelerator applications.

Rotation of intrinsic orbital angular momentum and the orbital Hall effect for twisted particles in arbitrary gravitational fields

For twisted particles in arbitrary gravitational fields, the problems of the rotation of intrinsic orbital angular momentum and the orbital Hall effect are solved in the general case. We need not use the Maxwell equations in curved spacetimes for a description of twisted photons. The exact general equation rigorously defining the OAM dynamics in any Riemannian spacetimes is derived. The general description of different manifestations of the orbital Hall effect for any twisted particles is also presented. Our short analysis shows that the results obtained can find important practical applications.

Relativistic quantum mechanics of charged vortex particles accelerated in a uniform electric field

The relativistic quantum-mechanical description of a charged Laguerre-Gauss beam accelerated in a uniform electric field has been fulfilled. Stationary wave eigenfunctions are rigorously derived. The evolution of the beam parameters during acceleration is considered in detail. The practically important effect of extraordinary suppression of transverse spreading of the beam is discovered, carefully analyzed, and properly explained. Our results provide direct evidence that vortex particle beams can be accelerated without destroying their intrinsic vortex properties, paving the way for high-energy vortex beam applications.

Generalization of exact operators of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation to arbitrary-spin particles in nonstationary fields

Time-dependent terms in Hamiltonians and equations of motion are rather important for a quantum-mechanical description of particles with arbitrary spins in nonstationary fields. We use the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation which allows one to obtain the Schr\"{o}dinger picture of relativistic quantum mechanics. We determine exact nonexponential and exponential operators of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for arbitrary-spins particles in the nonstationary case. Some fundamental properties of these operators and the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian are also identified.

Leading correction to the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian

For Dirac particles interacting with external fields, we use the exact operator of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation obtained by Eriksen and rigorously derive a leading correction in the weak-field approximation to the known relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian. For this purpose, we carry out the operator extraction of a square root in the Eriksen operator. The derived correction is important for the scattering of relativistic particles. Since the description of this scattering by a relativistic wave equation of the second order is more convenient, we determine a general connection between relativistic wave equations of the first and second orders. For Dirac particles, the relativistic wave equation of the second order is obtained with a correction similar to that to the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian.

Generalized Gouy Rotation of Electron Vortex beams in uniform magnetic fields

The intrinsic rotation of electron vortex beams, governed by their phase structure, has been experimentally observed in magnetic fields by breaking the beam's cylindrical symmetry. However, conventional Landau states, which predict three fixed angular frequencies, cannot fully account for the existing experimental observations. To address this limitation, we introduce and derive the generalized Gouy rotation angle, which links the Gouy phase of an extended Landau state -- featuring a periodically oscillating beam width -- to the experimentally observed angular variation. In particular, this framework predicts a broader spectrum of angular frequencies and captures the reversal of rotation direction observed in electron vortex beams with negative topological charge. Calculations based on experimental parameters show good agreement with previously published data and are further validated here by numerical simulations using the Chebyshev method. Our results are, in principle, applicable to any system involving electron vortex beams in uniform magnetic fields, and provide a foundation for exploring vortex electrons in Glaser and other nonuniform magnetic fields.

Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and multiwave states of a graphene electron in external fields and free (2+1)-space

The relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is used for an advanced description of planar graphene electrons in external fields and free (2+1)-space. It is shown that the initial Dirac equation should by based on the usual $(4\times4)$ Dirac matrices but not on the reduction of matrix dimensions and the use of $(2\times2)$ Pauli matrices. The latter approach does not agree with the experiment. The spin of graphene electrons is not the one-value spin and takes the values $\pm1/2$. The exact Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian of a graphene electron in uniform and nonuniform magnetic fields is derived. The exact energy spectrum agreeing with the experiment and exact Foldy-Wouthuysen wave eigenfunctions are obtained. These eigenfunctions describe multiwave (structured) states in (2+1)-space. It is proven that the Hermite-Gauss beams exist even in the free space. In the multiwave Hermite-Gauss states, graphene electrons acquire nonzero effective masses dependent on a quantum number and move with group velocities which are less than the Fermi velocity. Graphene electrons in a static electric field also can exist in the multiwave Hermite-Gauss states defining non-spreading coherent beams. These beams can be accelerated and decelerated.

Equation of spin motion for a particle with electric and magnetic charges and dipole moments

The general classical equation of spin motion is rigorously derived for a particle with electric and magnetic charges and dipole moments in electromagnetic fields. The equation describing the spin motion relative to the momentum direction in storage rings is also obtained. The importance of the derivation follows from a possible appearance of magnetic charges and EDMs due to the pseudoscalar \emph{CP}-violating electromagnetic interaction caused by dark matter axions.

Effective oscillatory magnetic charges and electric dipole moments induced by axion-photon coupling

We suppose that the covariance of Lagrangians always taking place results in a distortion of any electric and magnetic field by a pseudoscalar field of dark matter axions and axion-like particles. As a result, electric and magnetic fields acquire oscillating magnetic and electric components, respectively. The Maxwell-like equations are rigorously derived. One can also use an equivalent approach based on an introduction of effective oscillating magnetic charges and electric dipole moments in undistorted electromagnetic fields. The determined relations between the magnetic charges and electric dipole moments and the axion-photon coupling constant open a possibility to compare a sensitivity of search for axions in optical experiments and experiments with massive particles. The dual (inverse) Witten effect defining effective magnetic charges of electrically charged particles opens new exciting possibilities to search for axions and axion-like particles with very small masses in nonresonance experiments. The study of a passage of strongly decelerated electrons or positrons through a solenoid is proposed.

General relativity effects in precision spin experimental tests of fundamental symmetries

A search for the $P$- and $CP(T)$-violating electric dipole moments (EDM) of atoms, particles and nuclei with sensitivity up to $10^{-15}$ in units of magnetic dipole moments, allowed by all discrete symmetries, is one of the topical problems of modern physics. According to Sakharov, $CP$-violation is one of the three key criteria of baryogenesis in generally accepted paradigm of the Big Bang cosmology. All three criteria are supported by the Standard Model (SM), but it fails to describe the observed baryon asymmetry of the Universe. This is regarded a strong argument in favor of existence of $CP$-symmetry breaking mechanisms beyond minimal SM, which can lead to measurable EDMs of atoms, particles and nuclei. Direct searches for EDM of charged particles and nuclei are possible only in storage rings (COSY, NICA). After successful studies by the JEDI collaboration at the COSY synchrotron, at the forefront is a search for the proton EDM in an electrostatic storage ring with the proton spin frozen at the magic energy with projected sensitivity $d_p\sim 10^{-29}\,e\cdot$cm. Following a brief introduction to the $CP$-violation physics and the baryogenesis, the review presents a detailed discussion of significant contributions to the spin dynamics from the terrestrial gravity along with the new effects of Earth's rotation in ultrasensitive searches for the EDM of charged particles and neutrons. Quite remarkably, for the projected sensitivity to the proton EDM, these false EDM effects can by one to two orders of magnitude exceed the signal of the proton EDM, and become comparable to an EDM contribution in experiments with ultracold neutrons. We also discuss the role of a precessing spin as a detector of the axion-like dark matter, and consider applications of the quantum gravitational anomalies to the dense matter hydrodynamics and the spin phenomena in the non-central nuclear collisions.

Production of twisted particles in heavy-ion collisions

A prevalence of production of twisted (vortex) particles in noncentral heavy-ion collisions is shown. In such collisions, photons emitted due to the rotation of charges are highly twisted. Charged particles are produced in nonspreading multiwave states and have significant orbital angular momenta. It can be expected that an emission of any twisted particles manifesting themselves in specific effects is rather ubiquitous.

Relativistic spin dynamics conditioned by dark matter axions

The relativistic spin dynamics defined by the pseudoscalar field of dark matter axions is rigorously determined. The relativistic Hamiltonian in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is derived. It agrees with the previously obtained nonrelativistic Hamiltonians and the relativistic classical estimation of the axion wind effect. In the relativistic Hamiltonian, the biggest term describes the extraordinary (three orders of magnitude) enhancement of the axion wind effect in storage ring experiments as compared with experiments with immobile particles. This term defines the spin rotation about the longitudinal axis. The effects caused by the axion-induced oscillating EDM and the axion wind consist in the spin rotations about the different horizontal axes and phases of stimulating oscillations differ by $π/2$. Experiments in a search for dark matter axions has been discussed. The two experimental designs for axion search experiments in storage rings have been elaborated.

Production of twisted particles in magnetic fields

The use of a (quasi)uniform magnetic field opens new possibilities for a production of twisted particles having orbital angular momenta. Quantum states suitable for a production of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field are determined. The particle penetration from a solenoid to vacuum or another solenoid is analyzed in detail. Experiments allowing one successful discoveries of twisted positrons and positroniums are developed. We find a new effect of increasing a uncertainty of phase of the particle rotation with the distance passed by the particle in the solenoid. This effect leads to exciting new possibilities of production of twisted particles in real solenoids without additional devices like particle sources.

Exact quantum-mechanical equations for particle beams

The exact quantum-mechanical equations for beams of free particles including photons and for beams of Dirac and spin-1 particles in a uniform magnetic field have been derived. These equations present the exact generalizations of the well-known paraxial equations in optics (exact Helmholtz equation for light beams) and particle physics and of the previously obtained paraxial equation for a Dirac particle in a uniform magnetic field. Some basic properties of exact wave eigenfunctions of particle beams have been determined.

Zitterbewegung of massless particles

Zitterbewegung of massless particles with an arbitrary spin is analyzed in various representations. Dynamics of the group velocity of a massless particle as a whole and of the corresponding radius vector is determined. This radius vector defines any fixed point of the envelope of the moving wave packet characterizing the particle and its group velocity differs from the group velocities of any points of the wavefront. We consider free massless scalar and Dirac particles, the photon, and massive and massless particles with an arbitrary spin and describe them in different representations. For particles with an arbitrary spin, the generalized Feshbach-Villars representation and the Foldy-Wouthuysen one are used. Zitterbewegung takes place in any representation except for the Foldy-Wouthuysen one. Formulas describing the motion of a "trembling" free particle are the same in any representation. In the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, the operators of the velocity and momentum of a free particle are proportional and Zitterbewegung does not take place. Since the radius vector (position) and velocity operators are the quantum-mechanical counterparts of the classical position and velocity just in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation, Zitterbewegung is not observable. The same conclusion has been previously made for free massive particles. For relativistic massive particles with spins 0, 1/2, 1 and massless particles with spins 0, 1/2 in arbitrarily strong electromagnetic fields, independent of the external fields Zitterbewegung does not appear in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation either. This conclusion is made for leading terms in the Hamiltonian proportional to the zero and first powers of the Planck constant and for such terms proportional to $\hbar^2$ which describe contact interactions.

A concise demonstrative summary of the Symmetric Hybrid ring design for the storage ring proton electric dipole moment experiment is presented. Critical issues such as lattice design, background electrical fields, geometrical phase, general relativity, spin coherence time and polarimeter systematics are presented. Overall, we find that with the currently proposed design iteration, systematic error sources are reduced by orders of magnitude and that the ring alignment requirements are within the currently available technology.

Twisted particles in heavy-ion collisions

The importance of production of twisted (vortex) particles in heavy-ion collisions is analyzed. Free twisted particles can possess giant intrinsic orbital angular momenta. Twisted particles are spatially localized and can be rather ubiquitous in laboratories and nature. Twisted photons have nonzero effective masses. Charged twisted particles can be recognized by their dynamics, magnetic moments, and specific effects in external fields.
