General quantum-mechanical solution for twisted electrons in a uniform magnetic field

A theory of twisted (and other structured) paraxial electrons in a uniform magnetic field is developed. The obtained general quantum-mechanical solution of the relativistic paraxial equation contains the commonly accepted result as a specific case of unstructured electron waves. In the weak-field limit, our solution (unlike the existing theory) is consistent with the well-known equation for free twisted electron beams. The observable effect of a different behavior of relativistic Laguerre-Gauss beams with opposite directions of the orbital angular momentum penetrating from the free space into a magnetic field is predicted. Distinguishing features of the quantization of the velocity and the effective mass of structured electrons in the uniform magnetic field are analyzed.

Field of a moving locked charge in classical electrodynamics

The paradox of a field of a moving locked charge (confined in a closed space) is considered and solved with the use of the integral Maxwell equations. While known formulas obtained for instantaneous fields of charges moving along straight and curved lines are fully correct, measurable quantities are average electric and magnetic fields of locked charges. It is shown that the average electric field of locked charges does not depend on their motion. The average electric field of protons moving in nuclei coincides with that of protons being at rest and having the same spatial distribution of the charge density. The electric field of a twisted electron is equivalent to the field of a centroid with immobile charges which spatial distribution is defined by the wave function of the twisted electron.

Position and spin in relativistic quantum mechanics

The problem of the position and spin in relativistic quantum mechanics is analyzed in detail. It is definitively shown that the position and spin operators in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation (but not in the Dirac one) are quantum-mechanical counterparts of the classical position and spin variables. The probabilistic interpretation is valid only for Foldy-Wouthuysen wave functions. The relativistic spin operators are discussed. The spin-orbit interaction does not exist for a free particle if the conventional operators of the orbital angular momentum and the rest-frame spin are used. Alternative definitions of the orbital angular momentum and the spin are based on noncommutative geometry, do not satisfy standard commutation relations, and can allow the spin-orbit interaction.

Paraxial wave function and Gouy phase for a relativistic electron in a uniform magnetic field

A connection between relativistic quantum mechanics in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and the paraxial equations is established for a Dirac particle in external fields. The paraxial form of the Landau eigenfunction for a relativistic electron in a uniform magnetic field is determined. The obtained wave function contains the Gouy phase and significantly approaches to the paraxial wave function for a free electron.

Zitterbewegung of bosons

Zitterbewegung of massive and massless scalar bosons and a massive Proca (spin-1) boson is analyzed. The equations describing the evolution of the velocity and position of the scalar boson in the generalized Feshbach-Villars representation and the corresponding equations for the massive Proca particle in the Sakata-Taketani representation are equivalent to each other and to the well-known equations for the Dirac particle. However, Zitterbewegung does not appear in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. Since the position and velocity operators in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation and their transforms to other representations are the quantum-mechanical counterparts of the corresponding classical variables, Zitterbewegung is not observable.

Quasi-uniform gravitational field of a disk revisited

We calculate the quasi-uniform gravitational field of a disk in the weak-field approximation and demonstrate an inappropriateness of preceding results. The Riemann tensor of this field is determined. The nonexistence of the uniform gravitational field is proven without the use of the weak-field approximation. The previously found difference between equations of motion for the momentum and spin in the accelerated frame and in the quasi-uniform gravitational field also takes place for the disk. However, it does not violate the Einstein equivalence principle because of the nonexistence of the uniform gravitational field.

Relativistic quantum-mechanical description of twisted paraxial electron and photon beams

The analysis of twisted (vortex) paraxial photons and electrons is fulfilled in the framework of relativistic quantum mechanics. The use of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation radically simplifies a description of relativistic electrons and clarifies fundamental properties of twisted particles. It is demonstrated that the twisted photon defined by the Laguerre-Gauss wave function is luminal. Its apparent subluminality takes place because the photon energy is contributed by the hidden transversal motion while the average transversal momentum vanishes. Nevertheless, the Laguerre-Gauss photon can be self-consistently modeled by a subluminal centroid with a nonzero kinematic (Lorentz-invariant) mass. An applicability of this model is a consequence of independence of centroid parameters from the longitudinal coordinate. All twisted and untwisted Laguerre-Gauss modes are subliminal. The Laguerre-Gauss electron has similar properties. The new effect of a quantization of the velocity and mass of the Laguerre-Gauss photon and electron is predicted. This effect is observable for the photon. The twisted photon and electron modeled by the centroids are considered in the general noninertial frame. Their inertial masses coinciding with kinematic ones are determined. The orbital magnetic moment of the Laguerre-Gauss electron does not depend on the radial quantum number.

Relativistic quantum dynamics of twisted electron beams in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields

General relativistic quantum dynamics of twisted (vortex) Dirac particles is constructed. The Hamiltonian and equations of motion in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are derived for a twisted relativistic electron in arbitrary electric and magnetic fields. A critical experiment for a verification of the results is proposed. The new important effect of a radiative orbital polarization of a twisted electron beam in a magnetic field resulting in a nonzero average projection of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum on the field direction is predicted.

Electric quadrupole moment and the tensor magnetic polarizability of twisted electrons and a potential for their measurements

For a twisted (vortex) Dirac particle in nonuniform electric and magnetic fields, the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is derived including high order terms describing new effects. The result obtained shows for the first time that a twisted spin-1/2 particle possesses a tensor magnetic polarizability and a measurable (spectroscopic) electric quadrupole moment. We have calculated the former parameter and have evaluated the latter one for a twisted electron. The tensor magnetic polarizability of the twisted electron can be measured in a magnetic storage ring because a beam with an initial orbital tensor polarization acquires a horizontal orbital vector polarization. The electric quadrupole moment is rather large and strongly influences the dynamics of the intrinsic orbital angular momentum. Three different methods of its measurements, freezing the intrinsic orbital angular momentum and two resonance methods, are proposed. The existence of the quadrupole moment of twisted electrons can lead to practical applications.

Siberian snake-like behavior for an orbital polarization of a beam of twisted (vortex) electrons

The orbital polarization of twisted electrons carrying an intrinsic orbital angular momentum is not influenced by field perturbations in arbitrary magnetic fields. This property means an existence of the Siberian snake-like behavior for an orbital polarization of a beam of twisted electrons in cyclotrons with the main magnetic field and magnetic focusing. As a result, the acceleration of twisted electron beams in cyclotrons necessary for their applications in high-energy-physics experiments considerably simplifies.

Dynamics of a tensor polarization of particles and nuclei and its influence on the spin motion in external fields

The tensor polarization of particles and nuclei is constant in a coordinate system rotating with the same angular velocity as the spin. In the laboratory frame, it rotates with this angular velocity. The general equation defining the evolution of the tensor polarization is derived. An explicit form of the dynamics of this polarization is given in the case when the angular velocity of the spin precession is constant and vertical. It is shown that the spin tensor interactions result in mutual transformations of the vector and tensor polarizations. These interactions can influence the spin motion.

Relativistic quantum mechanics of a Proca particle in Riemannian spacetimes

Relativistic quantum mechanics of a Proca (spin-1) particle in Riemannian spacetimes is constructed. Covariant equations defining electromagnetic interactions of a Proca particle with the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric dipole moment in Riemannian spacetimes are formulated. The relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation with allowance for terms proportional to the zero power of the Planck constant is performed. The Hamiltonian obtained agrees with the corresponding Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonians derived for scalar and Dirac particles and with their classical counterpart. The unification of relativistic quantum mechanics in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation is discussed.

Berry phases in an electric-dipole-moment experiment in an all-electric storage ring

Systematic effects caused by the Berry (geometric) phases in an electric-dipole-moment experiment in an all-electric storage ring are considered. We analyze the experimental setup when the spin is frozen and local longitudinal and vertical electric fields alternate. Due to the Berry phases, the spin rotates about the radial axis. The corresponding systematic error is rather important while it can be canceled with clockwise and counterclockwise beams. The Berry phases also lead to the spin rotation about the radial axis. This effect can be canceled with clockwise and counterclockwise beams as well. The sign of the azimuthal component of the angular velocity of the spin precession depends on the starting point where the spin orientation is perfect. The radial component of this quantity keeps its value and sign for each starting point. When the longitudinal and vertical electric fields are joined in the same sections without any alternation, the systematic error due to the geometric phases does not appear. However, another systematic effect of the spin rotation about the azimuthal axis takes place and has opposite signs for clockwise and counterclockwise beams.

A theoretical description of vortex electrons interacting with electric and magnetic fields is presented, based on Lorentz transformations. The general dynamical equations of motion of a twisted electron with intrinsic orbital angular momentum in an external field is derived. Methods for the extraction of an electron vortex beam with a given orbital polarization and for the manipulation of such a beam are developed.

General treatment of quantum and classical spinning particles in external fields

We develop the general theory of spinning particles with electric and magnetic dipole moments moving in arbitrary electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. Both the quantum-mechanical and classical dynamics is investigated. We start from the covariant Dirac equation extended to a spin-${\frac 12}$ fermion with anomalous magnetic and electric dipole moments and then perform the relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. This transformation allows us to obtain the quantum-mechanical equations of motion for the physical operators in the Schrödinger form and to establish the classical limit of relativistic quantum mechanics. The results obtained are then compared to the general classical description of the spinning particle interacting with electromagnetic, inertial and gravitational fields. The complete agreement between the quantum mechanics and the classical theory is proven in the general case. As an application of the results obtained, we consider the dynamics of a spinning particle in a gravitational wave and analyze the prospects of using the magnetic resonance setup to find possible manifestations of the gravitational wave on spin.

General description of spin motion in storage rings in presence of oscillating horizontal fields

The general theoretical description of the influence of oscillating horizontal magnetic and quasimagnetic fields on the spin evolution in storage rings is presented. Previous results are generalized to the case when both of the horizontal components of the oscillating field are nonzero and the vector of this field circumscribes an ellipse. General equations describing a behavior of all components of the polarization vector are derived and the case of an arbitrary initial polarization is considered. The derivation is fulfilled in the case when the oscillation frequency is nonresonant. The general spin evolution in storage rings conditioned by vertical betatron oscillations is calculated as an example.

General classical and quantum-mechanical description of magnetic resonance: An application to electric-dipole-moment experiments

A general theoretical description of a magnetic resonance is presented. This description is necessary for a detailed analysis of spin dynamics in electric-dipole-moment experiments in storage rings. General formulas describing a behavior of all components of the polarization vector at the magnetic resonance are obtained for an arbitrary initial polarization. These formulas are exact on condition that the nonresonance rotating field is neglected. The spin dynamics is also calculated at frequencies far from resonance with allowance for both rotating fields. A general quantum-mechanical analysis of the spin evolution at the magnetic resonance is fulfilled and the full agreement between the classical and quantum-mechanical approaches is shown. Quasimagnetic resonances for particles and nuclei moving in noncontinuous perturbing fields of accelerators and storage rings are considered. Distinguishing features of quasimagnetic resonances in storage ring electric-dipole-moment experiments are investigated in detail. The exact formulas for the effect caused by the electric dipole moment are derived. The difference between the resonance effects conditioned by the rf electric-field flipper and the rf Wien filter is found and is calculated for the first time. The existence of this difference is crucial for the establishment of a consent between analytical derivations and computer simulations and for checking spin tracking programs. Main systematical errors are considered.
