Some extension algebras for standard modules over KLR algebras of type $A$

Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras $R_θ$ of finite Lie type are affine quasihereditary with standard modules $Δ(π)$ labeled by Kostant partitions of $θ$. Let $Δ$ be the direct sum of all standard modules. It is known that the Yoneda algebra $\mathcal{E}_θ:=\operatorname{Ext}_{R_θ}^*(Δ, Δ)$ carries a structure of an $A_\infty$-algebra which can be used to reconstruct the category of standardly filtered $R_θ$-modules. In this paper, we explicitly describe $\mathcal{E}_θ$ in two special cases: (1) when $θ$ is a positive root in type $\mathtt{A}$, and (2) when $θ$ is of Lie type $\mathtt{A_2}$. In these cases, $\mathcal{E}_θ$ turns out to be torsion free and intrinsically formal. We provide an example to show that the $A_\infty$-algebra $\mathcal{E}_θ$ is non-formal in general.

Irreducible restrictions of representations of alternating groups in small characteristics: Reduction theorems

We study irreducible restrictions from modules over alternating groups to subgroups. We get reduction results which substantially restrict the classes of subgroups and modules for which this is possible. This is known when the characteristic of the ground field is greater than $3$, but the small characteristics cases require a substantially more delicate analysis and new ideas. In view of our earlier work on symmetric groups we may consider only the restriction of irreducible modules over alternating groups which do not extend to symmetric groups. This work fits into the Aschbacher-Scott program on maximal subgroups of finite classical groups.

Based quasi-hereditary algebras

A notion of a split quasi-hereditary algebra has been defined by Cline, Parshall and Scott. Du and Rui describe a based approach to split quasi-hereditary algebras. We develop this approach further to show that over a complete local Noetherian ring, one can achieve even stronger basis properties. This is important for `schurifying' quasi-hereditary algebras as developed in our subsequent work. The schurification procedure associates to an algebra $A$ a new algebra, which is the classical Schur algebra if $A$ is a field. Schurification produces interesting new quasi-hereditary and cellular algebras. It is important to work over an integral domain of characteristic zero, taking into account a super-structure on the input algebra $A$. So we pay attention to super-structures on quasi-hereditary algebras and investigate a subtle conforming property of heredity data which is crucial to guarantee that the schurification of $A$ is quasi-hereditary if so is $A$. We establish a Morita equivalence result which allows us to pass to basic quasi-hereditary algebras preserving conformity.

Generalized Schur algebras

We define and study a new class of bialgebras, which generalize certain Turner double algebras related to generic blocks of symmetric groups. Bases and generators of these algebras are given. We investigate when the algebras are symmetric, which is relevant to block theory of finite groups. We then establish a double centralizer property related to blocks of Schur algebras.

Schurifying quasi-hereditary algebras

We define and study new classes of quasi-hereditary and cellular algebras which generalize Turner's double algebras. Turner's algebras provide a local description of blocks of symmetric groups up to derived equivalence. Our general construction allows one to `schurify' any quasi-hereditary algebra $A$ to obtain a generalized Schur algebra $S^A(n,d)$ which we prove is again quasi-hereditary if $d\leq n$. We describe decomposition numbers of $S^A(n,d)$ in terms of those of $A$ and the classical Schur algebra $S(n,d)$. In fact, it is essential to work with quasi-hereditary superalgebras $A$, in which case the construction of the schurification involves a non-trivial full rank sub-lattice $T^A_\mathfrak{a}(n,d)\subseteq S^A(n,d)$.

Affine zigzag algebras and imaginary strata for KLR algebras

KLR algebras of affine ADE types are known to be properly stratified if the characteristic of the ground field is greater than some explicit bound. Understanding the strata of this stratification reduces to semicuspidal cases, which split into real and imaginary subcases. Real semicuspidal strata are well-understood. We show that the smallest imaginary stratum is Morita equivalent to Huerfano-Khovanov's zigzag algebra tensored with a polynomial algebra in one variable. We introduce affine zigzag algebras and prove that these are Morita equivalent to arbitrary imaginary strata if the characteristic of the ground field is greater than the bound mentioned above.

Stratifying KLR algebras of affine ADE types

We generalize imaginary Howe duality for KLR algebras of affine ADE types, developed in our previous paper, from balanced to arbitrary convex preorders. Under the assumption that the characteristic of the ground field is greater than some explicit bound, we prove that these KLR algebras are properly stratified.

Turner doubles and generalized Schur algebras

Turner's Conjecture describes all blocks of symmetric groups and Hecke algebras up to derived equivalence in terms of certain double algebras. With a view towards a proof of this conjecture, we develop a general theory of Turner doubles. In particular, we describe doubles as explicit maximal symmetric subalgebras of certain generalized Schur algebras and establish a Schur-Weyl duality with wreath product algebras.

Blocks of symmetric groups, semicuspidal KLR algebras and zigzag Schur-Weyl duality

We prove Turner's conjecture, which describes the blocks of the Hecke algebras of the symmetric groups up to derived equivalence as certain explicit Turner double algebras. Turner doubles are Schur-algebra-like `local' objects, which replace wreath products of Brauer tree algebras in the context of the Broué abelian defect group conjecture for blocks of symmetric groups with non-abelian defect groups. The main tools used in the proof are generalized Schur algebras corresponding to wreath products of zigzag algebras and imaginary semicuspidal quotients of affine KLR algebras.

Restriction of odd degree characters and natural correspondences

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, $n > 1$, and let $P$ denote a maximal parabolic subgroup of $GL_n(q)$ with Levi subgroup $GL_{n-1}(q) \times GL_1(q)$. We restrict the odd-degree irreducible characters of $GL_n(q)$ to $P$ to discover a natural correspondence of characters, both for $GL_n(q)$ and $SL_n(q)$. A similar result is established for certain finite groups with self-normalizing Sylow $p$-subgroups. We also construct a canonical bijection between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $S_n$ and those of $M$, where $M$ is any maximal subgroup of $S_n$ of odd index; as well as between the odd-degree irreducible characters of $G = GL_n(q)$ or $GU_n(q)$ with $q$ odd and those of $N_{G}(P)$, where $P$ is a Sylow $2$-subgroup of $G$. Since our bijections commute with the action of the absolute Galois group over the rationals, we conclude that the fields of values of character correspondents are the same. We use this to answer some questions of R. Gow.

Modular Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups

We review some recent advances in modular representation theory of symmetric groups and related Hecke algebras. We discuss connections with Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras and gradings on the blocks of the group algebras $FΣ_n$, which these connections reveal; graded categorification and connections with quantum groups and crystal bases; modular branching rules and the Mullineaux map; graded cellular structure and graded Specht modules; cuspidal systems for affine KLR algebras and imaginary Schur-Weyl duality, which connects representation theory of these algebras to the usual Schur algebras of smaller rank.

Imaginary Schur-Weyl duality

We study imaginary representations of the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of affine Lie type. Irreducible modules for such algebras arise as simple heads of standard modules. In order to define standard modules one needs to have a cuspidal system for a fixed convex preorder. A cuspidal system consists of irreducible cuspidal modules---one for each real positive root for the corresponding affine root system ${\tt X}_l^{(1)}$, as well as irreducible imaginary modules---one for each $l$-multipartition. We study imaginary modules by means of `imaginary Schur-Weyl duality'. We introduce an imaginary analogue of tensor space and the imaginary Schur algebra. We construct a projective generator for the imaginary Schur algebra, which yields a Morita equivalence between the imaginary and the classical Schur algebra. We construct imaginary analogues of Gelfand-Graev representations, Ringel duality and the Jacobi-Trudy formula.

Affine Cellularity of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier Algebras of Finite Types

We prove that the Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras $R_α$ of finite type are (graded) affine cellular in the sense of Koenig and Xi. In fact, we establish a stronger property, namely that the affine cell ideals in $R_α$ are generated by idempotents. This in particular implies the (known) result that the global dimension of $R_α$ is finite.

Homological properties of finite type Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras

We give an algebraic construction of standard modules (infinite dimensional modules categorifying the PBW basis of the underlying quantized enveloping algebra) for Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras in all finite types. This allows us to prove in an elementary way that these algebras satisfy the homological properties of an `affine quasi-hereditary algebra.' In simply-laced types these properties were established originally by Kato via a geometric approach. We also construct some Koszul-like projective resolutions of standard modules corresponding to multiplicity-free positive roots.

Modular branching rules for projective representations of symmetric groups and lowering operators for the supergroup Q(n)

There are two approaches to projective representation theory of symmetric and alternating groups, which are powerful enough to work for modular representations. One is based on Sergeev duality, which connects projective representation theory of the symmetric group and representation theory of the algebraic supergroup $Q(n)$ via appropriate Schur (super)algebras and Schur functors. The second approach follows the work of Grojnowski for classical affine and cyclotomic Hecke algebras and connects projective representation theory of symmetric groups in characteristic $p$ to the crystal graph of the basic module of the twisted affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A_{p-1}^{(2)}$. The goal of this work is to connect the two approaches mentioned above and to obtain new branching results for projective representations of symmetric groups. This is achieved by developing the theory of lowering operators for the supergroup $Q(n)$ which is parallel to (although much more intricate than) the similar theory for $GL(n)$ developed by the first author. The theory of lowering operators for $GL(n)$ is a non-trivial generalization of Carter's work in characteristic zero, and it has received a lot of attention. So this part of our work might be of independent interest. One of the applications of lowering operators is to tensor products of irreducible $Q(n)$-modules with natural and dual natural modules, which leads to important special translation functors. We describe the socles and primitive vectors in such tensor products.
