Graded Specht modules

Recently, the first two authors have defined a Z-grading on group algebras of symmetric groups and more generally on the cyclotomic Hecke algebras of type G(l,1,d). In this paper we explain how to grade Specht modules over these algebras.

Representation Theory of Symmetric Groups and Related Hecke Algebras

This is an expository article. We survey some fundamental trends in representation theory of symmetric groups and related objects which became apparent in the last fifteen years. The emphasis is on connections with Lie theory via categorification. We present results on branching rules and crystal graphs, decomposition numbers and canonical bases, graded representation theory, connections with cyclotomic and affine Hecke algebras, Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras, category ${\mathcal O}$, $W$-algebras, ...

Representations of Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier Algebras and Combinatorics of Lyndon Words

We construct irreducible representations of affine Khovanov-Lauda-Rouquier algebras of arbitrary finite type. The irreducible representations arise as simple heads of appropriate induced modules, and thus our construction is similar to that of Bernstein and Zelevinsky for affine Hecke algebras of type A. The highest weights of irreducible modules are given by the so-called good words, and the highest weights of the 'cuspidal modules' are given by the good Lyndon words. In a sense, this has been predicted by Leclerc.

Graded decomposition numbers for cyclotomic Hecke algebras

In recent joint work with Wang, we have constructed graded Specht modules for cyclotomic Hecke algebras. In this article, we prove a graded version of the Lascoux-Leclerc-Thibon conjecture, describing the decomposition numbers of graded Specht modules over a field of characteristic zero.

Blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras and Khovanov-Lauda algebras

We construct an explicit isomorphism between blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras and (sign-modified) Khovanov-Lauda algebras in type A. These isomorphisms connect the categorification conjecture of Khovanov and Lauda to Ariki's categorification theorem. The Khovanov-Lauda algebras are naturally graded, which allows us to exhibit a non-trivial Z-grading on blocks of cyclotomic Hecke algebras, including symmetric groups in positive characteristic.

The degenerate analogue of Ariki's categorification theorem

We explain how to deduce the degenerate analogue of Ariki's categorification theorem over the ground field C as an application of Schur-Weyl duality for higher levels and the Kazhdan-Lusztig conjecture in finite type A. We also discuss some supplementary topics, including Young modules, tensoring with sign, tilting modules and Ringel duality.

Homogeneous Representations of Khovanov-Lauda Algebras

We construct irreducible graded representations of simply laced Khovanov-Lauda algebras which are concentrated in one degree. The underlying combinatorics of skew shapes and standard tableaux corresponding to arbitrary simply laced types has been developed previously by Peterson, Proctor and Stembridge. In particular, the Peterson-Proctor hook formula gives dimensions of the homogeneous irreducible modules corresponding to straight shapes.

Schur-Weyl duality for higher levels

We extend Schur-Weyl duality to an arbitrary level $l \geq 1$, the case $l=1$ recovering the classical duality between the symmetric and general linear groups. In general, the symmetric group is replaced by the degenerate cyclotomic Hecke algebra over $\C$ parametrized by a dominant weight of level $l$ for the root system of type $A_\infty$. As an application, we prove that the degenerate analogue of the quasi-hereditary cover of the cyclotomic Hecke algebra constructed by Dipper, James and Mathas is Morita equivalent to certain blocks of parabolic category $\mathcal{O}$ for the general linear Lie algebra.

Highest weight theory for finite W-algebras

We define analogues of Verma modules for finite W-algebras. By the usual ideas of highest weight theory, this is a first step towards the classification of finite dimensional irreducible modules. Motivated by known results in type A, we then formulate some precise conjectures in the case of nilpotent orbits of standard Levi type.

Representations of shifted Yangians and finite W-algebras

We study highest weight representations of shifted Yangians over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0. In particular, we classify the finite dimensional irreducible representations and explain how to compute their Gelfand-Tsetlin characters in terms of known characters of standard modules and certain Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. Our approach exploits the relationship between shifted Yangians and the finite W-algebras associated to nilpotent orbits in general linear Lie algebras.

Shifted Yangians and finite W-algebras

We give a presentation for the finite W-algebra associated to a nilpotent matrix inside the general linear Lie algebra over C. In the special case that the nilpotent matrix consists of n Jordan blocks each of the same size l, the presentation is that of the Yangian of level l associated to the Lie algebra gl_n, as was first observed by Ragoucy and Sorba. In the general case, we are lead to introduce some generalizations of the Yangian which we call the shifted Yangians.

Parabolic presentations of the Yangian Y(gl_n)

We derive some new presentations for the Yangian associated to the Lie algebra gl_n(C) that are adapted to parabolic subalgebras. At one extreme, the presentation is just the usual RTT presentation, whilst at the other extreme it is a variation on Drinfeld's presentation. All these presentations play an important role in our subsequent article "Shifted Yangians and finite W-algebras".

Hecke-Clifford superalgebras, crystals of type A_{2l}^{(2)} and modular branching rules for \hat S_n

Ian Grojnowski has developed a purely algebraic way to connect the representation theory of affine Hecke algebras at an (l+1)-th root of unity to the highest weight theory of the affine Kac-Moody algebra of type A_l^(1). The present article is devoted to extending Grojnowski's machinery to the twisted case: we replace the affine Hecke algebras with the affine Hecke-Clifford superalgebras of Jones and Nazarov, and the Kac-Moody algebra A_l^(1) with the twisted algebra A_2l^(2). In particular, we obtain an algebraic construction purely in terms of the representation theory of Hecke-Clifford superalgebras of the plus part U_\Z^+ of the enveloping algebra, as well as of Kashiwara's highest weight crystals B(\infty) and B(\la) for each dominant weight \la. The results of the article have applications to the modular representation theory of the double covers of the symmeric groups, as was predicted originally by Leclerc and Thibon. In particular, the parametrization of irreducibles, classification of blocks and analogues of the modular branching rules of the symmetric group for the double covers over fields of odd characteristic follow from the special case λ= Λ_0 of our main results. These matters are discussed in the final section of the paper.

Cartan Determinants and Shapovalov forms

We compute the determinant of the Gram matrix of the Shapovalov form on weight spaces of the basic representation of an affine Kac-Moody algebra of ADE type (possibly twisted). As a consequence, we obtain explicit formulae for the determinants of the Cartan matrices of $p$-blocks of the symmetric group and its double cover, and of the associated Hecke algebras at roots of unity.
