The Torelli group of $W_g = \#^g S^n \times S^n$ is the subgroup of the diffeomorphisms of $W_g$ fixing a disc which act trivially on $H_n(W_g;Z)$. The rational cohomology groups of the Torelli group are representations of an arithmetic subgroup of $Sp_{2g}(Z)$ or $O_{g,g}(Z)$. In this paper we prove that for $2n \geq 6$ and $g \geq 2$, they are in fact algebraic representations. Combined with previous work, this determines the rational cohomology of the Torelli group in a stable range. We further prove that the classifying space of the Torelli group is nilpotent.
We describe an $E_k$-cell structure on the free $E_{k+1}$-algebra on a point, and more generally describe how the May-Milgram filtration of $Ω^m Σ^m S^{k}$ lifts to a filtration of the free $E_{k+m}$-algebra on a point by iterated pushouts of free $E_k$-algebras.
We completely describe the algebraic part of the rational cohomology of the Torelli groups of the manifolds $\#^g S^n \times S^n$ relative to a disc in a stable range, for $2n \geq 6$. Our calculation is also valid for $2n=2$ assuming that the rational cohomology groups of these Torelli groups are finite dimensional in a stable range.
We compute the first two symplectic quadratic K-theory groups of the integers, or equivalently, the first two stable homology groups of the group of symplectic integral matrices preserving the standard quadratic refinement. The main novelty in our calculation lies in its method, which is based on high-dimensional manifold theory.
Let $K$ be the K3 manifold. In this note, we discuss two methods to prove that certain generalized Miller--Morita--Mumford classes for smooth bundles with fiber $K$ are non-zero. As a consequence, we fill a gap in a paper of the first author, and prove that the homomorphism $Diff(K)\to π_0 Diff(K)$ does not split. One of the two methods of proof uses a result of Franke on the stable cohomology of arithmetic groups that strengthens work of Borel, and may be of independent interest.
We enumerate the low dimensional cells in the Voronoi cell complexes attached to the modular groups $SL_N(Z)$ and $GL_N(Z)$ for $N=8,9,10,11$, using quotient sublattices techniques for $N=8,9$ and linear programming methods for higher dimensions. These enumerations allow us to compute some cohomology of these groups and prove that $K_8(Z) = 0$. We deduce from it new knowledge on the Kummer-Vandiver conjecture.
We prove that in dimensions not equal to 4, 5, or 7, the homology and homotopy groups of the classifying space of the topological group of diffeomorphisms of a disk fixing the boundary are finitely generated in each degree. The proof uses homological stability, embedding calculus and the arithmeticity of mapping class groups. From this we deduce similar results for the homeomorphisms of $R^n$ and various types of automorphisms of 2-connected manifolds.
We prove a new kind of stabilisation result, "secondary homological stability", for the homology of mapping class groups of orientable surfaces with one boundary component. These results are obtained by constructing CW approximations to the classifying spaces of these groups, in the category of $E_2$-algebras, which have no $E_2$-cells below a certain vanishing line.
In Appendix A of his article on rational functions, Segal proved homological stability for configuration spaces with a stability slope of 1/2. This was later improved to a slope of 1 by Church and Randal-Williams if one works with rational coefficients and manifolds of dimension at least $3$. In this note we prove that the stability slope of 1 holds even with Z[1/2] coefficients, and clarify some aspects of Segal's proof for topological manifolds.
In this paper we give three applications of a method to prove h-principles on closed manifolds. Under weaker conditions this method proves a homological h-principle, under stronger conditions it proves a homotopical one. The three applications are as follows: a homotopical version of Vassiliev's h-principle, the contractibility of the space of framed functions, and a version of Mather-Thurston theory.
We prove a homological stability theorem for unlinked circles in $3$-manifolds and give an application to certain groups of diffeomorphisms of 3-manifolds.
We define bounded generation for $E_n$-algebras in chain complexes and prove that for $n \geq 2$ this property is equivalent to homological stability. Using this we prove a local-to-global principle for homological stability, which says that if an $E_n$-algebra $A$ has homological stability (or equivalently the topological chiral homology $\int_{R^n} A$ has homology stability), then so has the topological chiral homology $\int_M A$ of any connected non-compact manifold $M$. Using scanning, we reformulate the local-to-global homological stability principle in a way that also applies to compact manifolds. We also give several applications of our results
Following the argument for diffeomorphisms by Galatius and Randal-Williams, we prove that homeomorphisms of 1-connected manifolds of even dimension at least 6 exhibit homological stability. We deduce similar results for PL homeomorphisms and homeomorphisms as a discrete group.
In this note we study the homology of configuration spaces of closed manifolds. We sharpen the eventual periodicity results of Nagpal and Cantero-Palmer, prove integral homological stability for configuration spaces of odd-dimensional manifolds and introduce a stabilization map on the homology with $Z[1/2]$-coefficients of configuration spaces of odd-dimensional manifolds.
By proving that several new complexes of embedded disks are highly connected, we obtain several new homological stability results. Our main result is homological stability for topological chiral homology on an open manifold with coefficients in certain partial framed $E_n$-algebras. Using this, we prove a special case of a conjecture of Vakil and Wood on homological stability for complements of closures of particular strata in the symmetric powers of an open manifold and we prove that the bounded symmetric powers of closed manifolds satisfy homological stability rationally.
We prove that the dual rational homotopy groups of the configuration spaces of a 1-connected manifold of dimension at least 3 are uniformly representation stable in the sense of Church, and that their derived dual integral homotopy groups are finitely-generated as FI-modules in the sense of Church-Ellenberg-Farb. This is a consequence of a more general theorem relating properties of the cohomology groups of a 1-connected co-FI-space to properties of its dual homotopy groups. We also discuss several other applications.
Conjecture F from [VW12] states that the complements of closures of certain strata of the symmetric power of a smooth irreducible complex variety exhibit rational homological stability. We prove a generalization of this conjecture to the case of connected manifolds of dimension at least 2 and give an explicit homological stability range.
