The Disc-structure space

We study the Disc-structure space $S^{\rm Disc}_\partial(M)$ of a compact smooth manifold $M$. Informally speaking, this space measures the difference between $M$, together with its diffeomorphisms, and the diagram of ordered framed configuration spaces of $M$ with point-forgetting and point-splitting maps between them, together with its derived automorphisms. As the main results, we show that in high dimensions, the Disc-structure space a) only depends on the tangential 2-type of $M$, b) is an infinite loop space, and c) is nontrivial as long as $M$ is spin. The proofs involve intermediate results that may be of independent interest, including an enhancement of embedding calculus to the level of bordism categories, results on the behaviour of derived mapping spaces between operads under rationalisation, and an answer to a question of Dwyer and Hess in that we show that the map ${\rm BTop}(d)\to {\rm BAut}(E_d)$ is an equivalence if and only if $d$ is at most $2$.

Mapping class groups of exotic tori and actions by ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$

We determine for which exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ of dimension $d\neq4$ the homomorphism from the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving diffeomorphisms of $\mathcal{T}$ to ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$ given by the action on the first homology group is split surjective. As part of the proof we compute the mapping class group of all exotic tori $\mathcal{T}$ that are obtained from the standard torus by a connected sum with an exotic sphere. Moreover, we show that any nontrivial ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$-action on $\mathcal{T}$ agrees on homology with the standard action, up to an automorphism of ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$. When combined, these results in particular show that many exotic tori do not admit any nontrivial differentiable action by ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb Z)$.

Cellular $E_k$-algebras

We give a set of foundations for cellular $E_k$-algebras which are especially convenient for applications to homological stability. We provide conceptual and computational tools in this setting, such as filtrations, a homology theory for $E_k$-algebras with a Hurewicz theorem, CW approximations, and many spectral sequences, which shall be used for such applications in future papers.

On diffeomorphisms of even-dimensional discs

We determine $π_*(BDiff_\partial(D^{2n})) \otimes \mathbb{Q}$ for $2n \geq 6$ completely in degrees $* \leq 4n-10$, far beyond the pseudoisotopy stable range. Furthermore, above these degrees we discover a systematic structure in these homotopy groups: we determine them outside of certain "bands" of degrees.

On the Torelli Lie algebra

We prove two theorems about the Malcev Lie algebra associated to the Torelli group of a surface of genus $g$: stably, it is Koszul and the kernel of the Johnson homomorphism consists only of trivial $Sp_{2g}(\mathbb{Z})$-representations lying in the centre.

Finiteness properties of automorphism spaces of manifolds with finite fundamental group

Given a closed smooth manifold $M$ of even dimension $2n\ge6$ with finite fundamental group, we show that the classifying space ${\rm BDiff}(M)$ of the diffeomorphism group of $M$ is of finite type and has finitely generated homotopy groups in every degree. We also prove a variant of this result for manifolds with boundary and deduce that the space of smooth embeddings of a compact submanifold $N\subset M$ of arbitrary codimension into $M$ has finitely generated higher homotopy groups based at the inclusion, provided the fundamental group of the complement is finite. As an intermediate result, we show that the group of homotopy classes of simple homotopy self-equivalences of a finite CW complex with finite fundamental group is up to finite kernel commensurable to an arithmetic group.

Stability of concordance embeddings

We prove a stability theorem for spaces of smooth concordance embeddings. From it we derive various applications to spaces of concordance diffeomorphisms and homeomorphisms.

The homotopy type of the topological cobordism category

We define a cobordism category of topological manifolds and prove that if $d \neq 4$ its classifying space is weakly equivalent to $Ω^{\infty -1} MTTop(d)$, where $MTTop(d)$ is the Thom spectrum of the inverse of the canonical bundle over $BTop(d)$. We also give versions with tangential structures and boundary. The proof uses smoothing theory and excision in the tangential structure to reduce the statement to the computation of the homotopy type of smooth cobordism categories due to Galatius-Madsen-Tillman-Weiss.

Embedding calculus for surfaces

We prove convergence of Goodwillie-Weiss' embedding calculus for spaces of embeddings into a manifold of dimension at most two, so in particular for diffeomorphisms between surfaces. We also relate the Johnson filtration of the mapping class group of a surface to a certain filtration arising from embedding calculus.

Comparing combinatorial models of moduli space and their compactifications

We compare two combinatorial models for the moduli space of two-dimensional cobordisms: Bödigheimer's radial slit configurations and Godin's admissible fat graphs, producing an explicit homotopy equivalence using a "critical graph" map. We also discuss natural compactifications of these two models, the unilevel harmonic compactification and Sullivan diagrams respectively, and prove that the homotopy equivalence induces a cellular homeomorphism between these compactifications.

Embedding calculus and smooth structures

We study the dependence of the embedding calculus Taylor tower on the smooth structures of the source and target. We prove that embedding calculus does not distinguish exotic smooth structures in dimension 4, implying a negative answer to a question of Viro. In contrast, we show that embedding calculus does distinguish certain exotic spheres in higher dimensions. As a technical tool of independent interest, we prove an isotopy extension theorem for the limit of the embedding calculus tower, which we use to investigate several further examples.

On the generalized Bykovskii presentation of Steinberg modules

We study presentations of the virtual dualizing modules of special linear groups of number rings, the Steinberg modules. Bykovskii gave a presentation for the Steinberg modules of the integers, and our main result is a generalization of this presentation to the Gaussian integers and the Eisenstein integers. We also show that this generalization does not give a presentation for the Steinberg modules of several Euclidean number rings.

An $HP^2$-bundle over $S^4$ with nontrivial $\hat{A}$-genus

We explain the existence of a smooth $HP^2$-bundle over $S^4$ whose total space has nontrivial $\hat{A}$-genus. Combined with an argument going back to Hitchin, this answers a question of Schick and implies that the space of Riemannian metrics of positive sectional curvature on a closed manifold can have nontrivial higher rational homotopy groups.
