On $A_2$ conjecture and corona decomposition of weights

We consider here a problem of finding the sharp estimate for the boundedness of an arbitrary Calderón-Zygmund operator in $L^2(w)$, $w\in A_2$. We first prove that for $A_2$ weight $w$ one has that the norm a Calderon--Zygmund operator $T$ in $L^2(w)$ is bounded by the sum of its weak norm, the weak norm of its adjoint, and the $A_2$ norm of the weight. From this result we derive that $\|T\|_{L^2(w)\rightarrow L^2(w)} \le C\,[w]_{A_2}\log (1+[w]_{A_2})$. We believe that the logarithmic factor is superflous. The approach is based on $2$-weight estimates technique and, hence, on non-homogeneous harmonic analysis.

Bergman-type Singular Operators and the Characterization of Carleson Measures for Besov--Sobolev Spaces on the Complex Ball

The purposes of this paper are two fold. First, we extend the method of non-homogeneous harmonic analysis of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg to handle "Bergman--type" singular integral operators. The canonical example of such an operator is the Beurling transform on the unit disc. Second, we use the methods developed in this paper to settle the important open question about characterizing the Carleson measures for the Besov--Sobolev space of analytic functions $B^σ_2$ on the complex ball of $\mathbb{C}^d$. In particular, we demonstrate that for any $σ> 0$, the Carleson measures for the space are characterized by a "T1 Condition". The method of proof of these results is an extension and another application of the work originated by Nazarov, Treil and the first author.

Two weight estimate for the Hilbert transform and corona decomposition for non-doubling measures

This article was written in 2005 and subsequently lost (at least by the third author). Recently it resurfaced due to one of the colleagues to whom a hard copy has been sent in 2005. We consider here a problem of finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the boundedness of two weight Calderón-Zygmund operators. We give such necessary and sufficient conditions in very natural terms, if the operator is the Hilbert transform, and the weights satisfy some very natural condition. The condition on weights was lifted in a recent paper of Michael Lacey, Eric Sawyer and Ignacio Uriarte-Tuero: "A characterization of the two weight norm inequality for the Hilbert transform", arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010. The paper of Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero alliviated the "pivotal" condition used in a present article and replaced it by the very interesting and correct energy condition, which, unlike the "pivotal" condition turned out to be also necessary. The paper of Lacey-Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero used the present article in its main aspect. The thrust of the present article is to use the methods of nonhomogeneous Harmonoc Analysis together with a several paraproducts arising from a certain stopping time argument. In view of the importance of the present article for Lacey--Sawyer-Uriarte-Tuero's paper arXiv:1001.4043 [math.CA] 31 January 2010, we present it to the attention of the reader. Drawing no parallels, "Darwin spent 1838-1859 getting ready to publish "On the Origin of Species" without actually publishing it, only brooding over beaks of finches".

Bergman-type Singular Integral Operators on Metric Spaces

In this paper we study ``Bergman-type'' singular integral operators on Ahlfors regular metric spaces. The main result of the paper demonstrates that if a singular integral operator on a Ahlfors regular metric space satisfies an additional estimate, then knowing the ``T(1)'' conditions for the operator imply that the operator is bounded on $L^2$. The method of proof of the main result is an extension and another application of the work originated by Nazarov, Treil and the first author on non-homogeneous harmonic analysis.

Buffon needle lands in $ε$-neighborhood of a 1-Dimensional Sierpinski Gasket with probability at most $|\logε|^{-c}$

In recent years, relatively sharp quantitative results in the spirit of the Besicovitch projection theorem have been obtained for self-similar sets by studying the $L^p$ norms of the "projection multiplicity" functions, $f_θ$, where $f_θ(x)$ is the number of connected components of the partial fractal set that orthogonally project in the $θ$ direction to cover $x$. In \cite{NPV}, it was shown that $n$-th partial 4-corner Cantor set with self-similar scaling factor 1/4 decays in Favard length at least as fast as $\frac{C}{n^p}$, for $p<1/6$. In \cite{BV}, this same estimate was proved for the 1-dimensional Sierpinski gasket for some $p>0$. A few observations were needed to adapt the approach of \cite{NPV} to the gasket: we sketch them here. We also formulate a result about all self-similar sets of dimension 1.

The Power Law For Buffon's Needle Landing Near the Sierpinski Gasket

In this paper we get a power estimate from above of the probability that Buffon's needle will land within distance 3^{-n} of Sierpinski's gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1. In comparison with the case of 1/4 corner Cantor set considered in Nazarov, Peres, and the second author: we still need the technique of arXiv:0801.2942 for splitting the directions to good and bad ones, but the case of Sierpinski gasket is considerably more generic and lacks symmetry, resulting in a need for much more careful estimates of zeros of the Fourier transform of Cantor measure.

Carleson measure and balayage

The balayage of a Carleson measure lies of course in BMO. We show that the converse statement is false. We also make a two-sided estimate of the Carleson norm of a positive measure in terms of balayages.

Boundedness of the square function and rectifiability

Following a recent paper by X. Tolsa [JFA, 2008] we show that the finiteness of square function associated with the Riesz transforms with respect to Hausdorff measure $H^n$ ($n$ is interger) on a set $E$ implies that $E$ is rectifiable.

Square function and Riesz transform in non-integer dimensions

Following a recent paper by X. Tolsa and A. Ruiz de Villa [Non existence of principal values of signed Riesz transforms of non integer dimension, preprint], we show that the finiteness of square function associated with the Riesz transforms with respect to Hausdorff measure $H^s$ implies that $s$ is integer.

Buffon needles landing near Sierpinski gasket

In this paper we modify the method of Nazarov, Peres, and Volberg "The power law for the Buffon needle probability of the four-corner Cantor set", arXiv:0801.2942, to get an estimate from above of the Buffon needle probability of the $n$--th partially constructed Sierpinski gasket of Hausdorff dimension 1.

Linear dimension-free estimates for the Hermite-Riesz transforms

We utilize the Bellman function technique to prove a bilinear dimension-free inequality for the Hermite operator. The Bellman technique is applied here to a non-local operator, which at first did not seem to be feasible. As a consequence of our bilinear inequality one proves dimension-free boundedness for the Riesz-Hermite transforms on L^p with linear growth in terms of p. A feature of the proof is a theorem establishing L^p(R^n) estimates for a class of spectral multipliers with bounds independent of n and p. Connections with known results on the Heisenberg group as well as with results for the Hilbert transform along the parabola are also explored. We believe our approach is quite universal in the sense that one could apply it to a whole range of Riesz transforms arising from various differential operators. As a first step towards this goal we prove our dimension-free bilinear embedding theorem for quite a general family of Schroedinger semigroups.

Estimates from below of the Buffon noodle probability for undercooked noodles

Let $\Cant_n$ be the $n$-th generation in the construction of the middle-half Cantor set. The Cartesian square $\K_n$ of $\Cant_n$ consists of $4^n$ squares of side-length $4^{-n}$. The chance that a long needle thrown at random in the unit square will meet $\K_n$ is essentially the average length of the projections of $\K_n$, also known as the Favard length of $\K_n$. A result due to Bateman and Volberg \cite{BV} shows that a lower estimate for this Favard length is $c \frac{\log n}{n}$. We may bend the needle at each stage, giving us what we will call a noodle, and ask whether the uniform lower estimate $c \frac{\log n}{n}$ still holds for these so-called Buffon noodle probabilities. If so, we call the sequence of noodles undercooked. We will define a few classes of noodles and prove that they are undercooked. In particular, we are interested in the case when the noodles are circular arcs of radius $r_n$. We will show that if $r_n \geq 4^{\frac{n}{5}}$, then the circular arcs are undercooked noodles.

Bellman Function and the $H^1-BMO$ Duality

A Bellman function approach to Fefferman's $H^1-BMO$ duality theorem is presented. One Bellman-type argument is used to handle two different one-dimensional cases, dyadic and continuous. An explicit estimate for the constant of embedding $BMO\subset (H^1)^*$ is given in the dyadic case. The same Bellman function is then used to establish a multi-dimensional analog.

An estimate from below for the Buffon needle probability of the four-corner Cantor set

Let $\Cant_n$ be the $n$-th generation in the construction of the middle-half Cantor set. The Cartesian square $\K_n = \Cant_n \times \Cant_n$ consists of $4^n$ squares of side-length $4^{-n}$. The chance that a long needle thrown at random in the unit square will meet $\K_n$ is essentially the average length of the projections of $\K_n$, also known as the Favard length of $\K_n$. A classical theorem of Besicovitch implies that the Favard length of $\K_n$ tends to zero. It is still an open problem to determine its exact rate of decay. Until recently, the only explicit upper bound was $\exp(- c\log_* n)$, due to Peres and Solomyak. ($\log_* n$ is the number of times one needs to take log to obtain a number less than 1 starting from $n$). In Nazarov-Peres-Volberg paper (arxiv:math 0801.2942) the power estimate from above was obtained. The exponent in this paper was less than 1/6 but could have been slightly improved. On the other hand, a simple estimate shows that from below we have the estimate $\frac{c}{n}$. Here we apply the idea from papers of Nets Katz (MRL (1996), 527-536) and Bateman-Katz (arxiv:math/0609187v1 2006) to show that the estimate from below can be in fact improved to $c \frac{\log n}{n}$. This is in drastic difference from the case of {\em random} Cantor sets studied by Peres and Solomyak in Pacific J. Math. 204 (2002), 473-496.

Monge--Ampère equation and Bellman optimization of Carleson Embedding Theorems

Monge--Ampère equation plays an important part in Analysis. For example, it is instrumental in mass transport problems. On the other hand, the Bellman function technique appeared recently as a way to consider certain Harmonic Analysis problems as the problems of Stochastic Optimal Control. This brings us to Bellman PDE, which in stochastic setting is often a Monge--Ampère equation or its close relative. We explore the way of solving Monge--Ampère equation by a sort of method of characteristics to find the Bellman function of certain classical Harmonic Analysis problems, and, therefore, of finding full structure of sharp constants and extremal sequences for those problems.
