Stochasticization of Solutions to the Yang-Baxter Equation

In this paper we introduce a procedure that, given a solution to the Yang-Baxter equation as input, produces a stochastic (or Markovian) solution to (a possibly dynamical version of) the Yang-Baxter equation. We then apply this "stochasticization procedure" to obtain three new, stochastic solutions to several different forms of the Yang-Baxter equation. The first is a stochastic, elliptic solution to the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation; the second is a stochastic, higher rank solution to the dynamical Yang-Baxter equation; and the third is a stochastic solution to a dynamical variant of the tetrahedron equation.

Yang-Baxter field for spin Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions

Employing bijectivisation of summation identities, we introduce local stochastic moves based on the Yang-Baxter equation for $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}_2})$. Combining these moves leads to a new object which we call the spin Hall-Littlewood Yang-Baxter field - a probability distribution on two-dimensional arrays of particle configurations on the discrete line. We identify joint distributions along down-right paths in the Yang-Baxter field with spin Hall-Littlewood processes, a generalization of Schur processes. We consider various degenerations of the Yang-Baxter field leading to new dynamic versions of the stochastic six vertex model and of the Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process.

Fourier transform on high-dimensional unitary groups with applications to random tilings

A combination of direct and inverse Fourier transforms on the unitary group $U(N)$ identifies normalized characters with probability measures on $N$-tuples of integers. We develop the $N\to\infty$ version of this correspondence by matching the asymptotics of partial derivatives at the identity of logarithm of characters with Law of Large Numbers and Central Limit Theorem for global behavior of corresponding random $N$-tuples. As one application we study fluctuations of the height function of random domino and lozenge tilings of a rich class of domains. In this direction we prove the Kenyon-Okounkov's conjecture (which predicts asymptotic Gaussianity and exact form of the covariance) for a family of non-simply connected polygons. Another application is a central limit theorem for the $U(N)$ quantum random walk with random initial data.

Asymptotics of random domino tilings of rectangular Aztec diamonds

We consider asymtotics of a domino tiling model on a class of domains which we call rectangular Aztec diamonds. We prove the Law of Large Numbers for the corresponding height functions and provide explicit formulas for the limit. For a special class of examples, the explicit parametrization of the frozen boundary is given. It turns out to be an algebraic curve with very special properties. Moreover, we establish the convergence of the fluctuations to the Gaussian Free Field in appropriate coordinates. Our main tool is a recently developed moment method for discrete particle systems.

Hall-Littlewood RSK field

We introduce a randomized Hall-Littlewood RSK algorithm and study its combinatorial and probabilistic properties. On the probabilistic side, a new model --- the Hall-Littlewood RSK field --- is introduced. Its various degenerations contain known objects (the stochastic six vertex model, the asymmetric simple exclusion process) as well as a variety of new ones. We provide formulas for a rich class of observables of these models, extending existing results about Macdonald processes. On the combinatorial side, we establish analogs of properties of the classical RSK algorithm: invertibility, symmetry, and a "bijectivization" of the skew-Cauchy identity.

Between the stochastic six vertex model and Hall-Littlewood processes

We prove that the joint distribution of the values of the height function for the stochastic six vertex model in a quadrant along a down-right path coincides with that for the lengths of the first columns of partitions distributed according to certain Hall-Littlewood processes. In the limit when one of the quadrant axes becomes continuous, we also show that the two-dimensional random field of the height function values has the same distribution as the lengths of the first columns of partitions from certain ascending Hall-Littlewood processes evolving under a Robinson-Schensted-Knuth type Markovian evolution.

Representations of classical Lie groups and quantized free convolution

We study the decompositions into irreducible components of tensor products and restrictions of irreducible representations of classical Lie groups as the rank of the group goes to infinity. We prove the Law of Large Numbers for the random counting measures describing the decomposition. This leads to two operations on measures which are deformations of the notions of the free convolution and the free projection. We further prove that if one replaces counting measures with others coming from the work of Perelomov and Popov on the higher order Casimir operators for classical groups, then the operations on the measures turn into the free convolution and projection themselves. We also explain the relation between our results and limit shape theorems for uniformly random lozenge tilings with and without axial symmetry.

Directed random polymers via nested contour integrals

We study the partition function of two versions of the continuum directed polymer in 1+1 dimension. In the full-space version, the polymer starts at the origin and is free to move transversally in the reals, and in the half-space version, the polymer starts at the origin but is reflected at the origin and stays in the negative reals. The partition functions solves the stochastic heat equation in full-space or half-space with mixed boundary condition at the origin; or equivalently the free energy satisfies the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation. We derive exact formulas for the Laplace transforms of the partition functions. In the full-space this is expressed as a Fredholm determinant while in the half-space this is expressed as a Fredholm Pfaffian. Taking long-time asymptotics we show that the limiting free energy fluctuations scale with exponent 1/3 and are given by the GUE and GSE Tracy-Widom distributions. These formulas come from summing divergent moment generating functions, hence are not mathematically justified. The primary purpose of this work is to present a mathematical perspective on the polymer replica method which is used to derive these results. In contrast to other replica method work, we do not appeal directly to the Bethe ansatz for the Lieb-Liniger model but rather utilize nested contour integral formulas for moments as well as their residue expansions.

Limit shapes for growing extreme characters of $U(\infty)$

We prove the existence of a limit shape and give its explicit description for certain probability distribution on signatures (or highest weights for unitary groups). The distributions have representation theoretic origin-they encode decomposition on irreducible characters of the restrictions of certain extreme characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary group $U(\infty)$ to growing finite-dimensional unitary subgroups $U(N)$. The characters of $U(\infty)$ are allowed to depend on $N$. In a special case, this describes the hydrodynamic behavior for a family of random growth models in $(2+1)$-dimensions with varied initial conditions.

Law of Large Numbers for Infinite Random Matrices over a Finite Field

Asymptotic representation theory of general linear groups GL(n,q) over a finite field leads to studying probability measures ρon the group U of all infinite uni-uppertriangular matrices over F_q, with the condition that ρis invariant under conjugations by arbitrary infinite matrices. Such probability measures form an infinite-dimensional simplex, and the description of its extreme points (in other words, ergodic measures ρ) was conjectured by Kerov in connection with nonnegative specializations of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Vershik and Kerov also conjectured the following Law of Large Numbers. Consider an n by n diagonal submatrix of the infinite random matrix drawn from an ergodic measure coming from the Kerov's conjectural classification. The sizes of Jordan blocks of the submatrix can be interpreted as a (random) partition of n, or, equivalently, as a (random) Young diagram λ(n) with n boxes. Then, as n goes to infinity, the rows and columns of λ(n) have almost sure limiting frequencies corresponding to parameters of this ergodic measure. Our main result is the proof of this Law of Large Numbers. We achieve it by analyzing a new randomized Robinson-Schensted-Knuth (RSK) insertion algorithm which samples random Young diagrams λ(n) coming from ergodic measures. The probability weights of these Young diagrams are expressed in terms of Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our insertion algorithm is a modified and extended version of a recent construction by Borodin and the second author (arXiv:1305.5501). On the other hand, our randomized RSK insertion generalizes a version of the RSK insertion introduced by Vershik and Kerov (1986) in connection with asymptotic representation theory of symmetric groups (which is governed by nonnegative specializations of Schur symmetric functions).

Stochastic monotonicity in Young graph and Thoma theorem

We show that the order on probability measures, inherited from the dominance order on the Young diagrams, is preserved under natural maps reducing the number of boxes in a diagram by $1$. As a corollary we give a new proof of the Thoma theorem on the structure of characters of the infinite symmetric group. We present several conjectures generalizing our result. One of them (if it is true) would imply the Kerov's conjecture on the classification of all homomorphisms from the algebra of symmetric functions into $\mathbb R$ which are non-negative on Hall--Littlewood polynomials.

Plancherel representations of $U(\infty)$ and correlated Gaussian Free Fields

We study asymptotics of traces of (noncommutative) monomials formed by images of certain elements of the universal enveloping algebra of the infinite-dimensional unitary group in its Plancherel representations. We prove that they converge to (commutative) moments of a Gaussian process that can be viewed as a collection of simply yet nontrivially correlated two-dimensional Gaussian Free Fields. The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. The results of the present work were announced in arXiv:1203.3010.

Kerov's interlacing sequences and random matrices

To a $N \times N$ real symmetric matrix Kerov assigns a piecewise linear function whose local minima are the eigenvalues of this matrix and whose local maxima are the eigenvalues of its $(N-1) \times (N-1)$ submatrix. We study the scaling limit of Kerov's piecewise linear functions for Wigner and Wishart matrices. For Wigner matrices the scaling limit is given by the Verhik-Kerov-Logan-Shepp curve which is known from asymptotic representation theory. For Wishart matrices the scaling limit is also explicitly found, and we explain its relation to the Marchenko-Pastur limit spectral law.

The limiting process has previously arisen via the global scaling limit of spectra for submatrices of Wigner Hermitian random matrices. This note is an announcement, proofs will appear elsewhere.

The central limit theorem for extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group

The asymptotics of the first rows and columns of random Young diagrams corresponding to extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group is studied. We consider rows and columns with linear growth in $n$, the number of boxes of random diagrams, and prove the central limit theorem for them in the case of distinct Thoma parameters. We also establish a more precise statement relating the growth of rows and columns of Young diagrams to a simple independent random sampling model. After this paper was completed, the author learned that the central limit theorem has been also proved in the work of Méliot (arXiv:1105.0091v1) by a different method.
